I am starting to think about getting a new car to replace my 95 leased Altima. The Altima was fine but am looking for something a bit more appealing. My choice are a Jeep Wrangler Sport or a Subaru Forester. Any opinions ?

I am looking at buying a 1998 Chevy Malibu with the V6 engine. Does anyone have any first hand experience with this car. I have heard good things but I would rather get some feedback from actual drivers of this vehicle.

    Thanks for your help.

Kindra, there currently aren't any special consumer or dealer cash programs on the Dodge Durango because it is such a new model. However, surprisingly I just saw today that Dodge is offering a special lease money factor on the truck. Off of the top of my head I believe that the special factor is .00325. This would be equal to around 7.8%. That's not a very low rate but there is some support there.

Also, Chrysler does have a special college graduate program. You'll have to ask the dealer about it, but I believe that they are offering $400 to recent grads.

Dear Blues, I'd say that unless you are an avid off-roader, the Wrangler is going to grind you down for everyday driving...the Forester is a much nicer car, but more $$$$ than the Wrangler, I'm sure.

RedFoxx, to my knowledge there are currently no special cash, financing, or lease programs available on the A4. Audi used to have a lot of support on this model when their reputation was still suffering from their past quality problems. However, now the A4 is extremely popular and doesn't really need any special programs to sell well. Also, right now Audi has a shortage of automatic A4s because this model shares its automatic transmission with the new VW Passat. So dealerships will probably be a lot less willing to negotiate on auto. A4s since they are in such short demand.

I'm currently hunting for a '98 Ford Windstar (GL or LX). I came across an LX (with several options) for $25000. Rebate would bring it down to $23500. Are taxes based on the $25K or the rebated price ($23.5K)? Dealer indicated that taxes would be calculated on the $25K.
    Thanks in advance.

I AM TRYING TO FIND OUT AMERICAN HONDA FINANCE MOST RECENT LEASE PERCENTAGE RATE FOR SOUTHERN STATES INCLUDING TEXAS. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF RATES HAS DROPPED BELOW 7.59% WHICH WAS THE LAST
RATE AVAILABLE IN FEBRUARY OR IF RATE WILL DROP BELOW THIS WITHIN THE NEXT WEEK.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE

lease rate will increase April 1 to 8.79% on all except civic 4 dr sedan (will stay at 3.9%)

Honda and Acura Canada both have a 2% holdback (A call to Honda in Scarborough will confirm it.)

The typical Honda Dealer invoice is 89% to 91% of the MSRP.

ie: A 1998 Acura Integra GSR MSRP $27,300
    Dealer Invoice $25,116

Drum Brakes on the pathfinder are not necessarily a problem. On a truck, rear drums are much more protected from the elements than discs are (rear discs on Ford Expeditions/Explorers tend to seize much more often than the drums on suburbans)

Spa, consumers are required to pay taxes on consumer rebates, but not dealer cash. Since the $1,500 on the Ford Windstar is consumer cash you would be required to pay taxes on it.

Ford dealers are selling leftover 97 Mustang Cobra s at less than invoice. In addition, ford is offering 2.9%/4year or 5.9/5year financing.
Does anyone know how much incentives to the dealers are?

Chrysler Corp. consumer rebates for Dodge and Plymouth minivans expire on 04/06/98. I intend to purchase a minivan soon, but do not know if I will be able to buy before that date.

Is it likely that these rebates will be extended beyond 04/06/98?

I'm not sure I understand exactly what "Base MSRP" is for purposes of calculating Dealer Hold Back. I am looking at the Honda Accord EX Coupe with automatic transmission and leather interior. MSRP, excluding destination charge is $20,800 for the 5-speed manual with cloth seats. MSRP excluding destination charge for auto and leather is $22,750. Destination charge is $395. What figure do I use to calculate Dealer Hold Back?
  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
There is not currently any dealer cash on the '97 Ford Mustang, Dave. There is, however, a consumer rebate. Ford is offering consumers $750 on '97 Mustangs. One thing that you have to your advantage is that the '99 model year is coming up. Any dealers that still have '97 models in stock will be more anxious than ever to get rid of them.
  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
Jessica I'm have not heard about Ford making any adjustments to the Mercury Sable pricing. Ford just changed their prices a month or two ago and is not likely to adjust them mid-model year again. In fact, the majority of the prices on the Ford vehicles that were adjusted went up. Perhaps the individual who told you this is speaking about a special regional incentive on the Sable.
  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
Brad, yes the Chrysler incentives do expire on April 4th. However, I really do not think that their incentives in minivans will decrease. This is an extremely competitive market right now. Just last week both Ford and General Motors increased their incentives on minivans. I think that Chrysler's incentives will probably stay the same or possably even get better.
  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
David in order to calculate the dealer holdback amount you should use the MSRP of the exact vehicle that you want to purchase. In this instance you would use the MSRP of the Honda Accord EX Coupe with automatic transmission and leather, which you listed at $22,750. Do not include the destination charge when calculating the holdback. I hope that this helps.

I'd like to revisit the question asked by WHOOSH (post #33):
I purchased a car that had a $1,000 rebate. Since the dealer didn't have the one that I wanted they
had to order it. Now the rebate is off and the car still isn't here and the dealer stated that I could no longer receive the rebate. Why should the dealer problem cost me $1,000? Is this dealer correct?

Seeing the above post, I asked a Ford dealer the same question. They state that I would NOT be entitled to the rebate if the vehicle arrives after the rebate expiration date of 4/2/98. If true, no factory ordered car bought at this time would ever arrive before the cutoff date. Is this just a ploy to make customers buy off the dealer's lot?

Would appreciate some feedback on this issue!!
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
    Dear Spa,

It isn't the dealer who controls the rules of the factory rebate, or the shipping dates, so he/she is just running off the same schedules as you. I agree it is annoying to be caught up in these deadlines, but I think the complaint should be directed at the manufacturer in this case.

The rebates posted for 1998 Nissans in this site are incorrect. The only models with a rebate is the Sentra and 200SX. All other models have incentives, NOT CUSTOMER'S REBATES!!
  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
Sammun, there are two types of cash that are available on vehicles: dealer cash and customer cash. The word "incentive" is really just another way of saying "rebate". The Nissan incentives listed on the Edmund's site are for the Northeast region of the United States. Nissan divides the country into approximately 30 different regions. The NE region incentives are listed to give a representative sample of what Nissan is offering nationwide. Regardless of whether this cash is dealer cash or consumer cash, I can assure you that the amounts are correct. If you are a good and informed negotiator, it should not matter if the amount is dealer or consumer cash especially with a manufacturer that throws as much money at their vehicles as Nissan does.

dear carman (or others who might know)--

I've been looking at a 1998 Subaru Legacy L through a dealer I located though Auto-By-Tel (in Bellingham, Washington).

It has been a great experience, but he claims there is only a $500 rebate and no dealer incentive on this car.

Edmunds says there is a $750 rebate and a $1,500 dealer incentive until 3/31/98. The dealer says "boy do I wish that were true!"

Is there any way to find out if he's being straight with me?

I am going to be buying a new car within the next month. I have looked all over the internet for up to date tests with Canadian prices for the 5 cars of choice can anyone give me some accurate info on where I can get this stuff!!!. The cars I am looking at are a 98 Acura 1.6 EL Premium, 98 Accord EX or LX, 98 Camary CE, 98 Altima SE, 98 passat GLS and maybe even the new 99 Grand AM GT if I could get on within a resonable time frame. All of these cars are 4 cyl 5- spds except of course I would have to have the Pontiac with the 3.4 V-6 and settle with a automatic. Any one with knowledge of these cars I would appreciate the input, Thanks in advance!!!

The lease on the 95 Accord LX Wagon that I have been driving expires in early May. I like the car, it has very low mileage, and is in excellent condition. I feel I have a good price for the buy out ($12,500). I have a question that I have not read about anywhere.

As many are aware, there are lots of 2 to 3 year old cars coming off leases which are being sold as "certified vehicles" by the dealers. These "certified vehicles" come with new car warranties. In the case of Honda, this is 3 years/36k miles.

My question: Is it possible (ethical and/or legal) to ask a dealer to take the car back, have it certified, and then purchase it back at the buy out price plus a reasonable agreed upon profit to the dealer in order to get an additional 3 years/36k miles of warranty? It sounds a bit crazy, but in car buying it seems anything goes for the dealer. How about the consumer?

Also...Those looking for FANTASTIC consumer information on new car purchases should check out James Bragg's organization, "Fighting Chance." He provides great information and is even available to discuss specific questions by telephone. Check it out at www.fightingchance.com.

Any thoughts as to whether Hyundai will extend their incentives past March?
  • guitarzanguitarzan Member Posts: 873
Ckepner, sounds like you should buy the car and purchase an extended warranty from the dealer, or another good source. Wouldn't that accomplish what you want?

A toyota dealer offered to sell me a 5 door sienna
minivan for 24,500. Is that a good deal?

  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
Trey, I'm not sure where you are looking but I don't see any rebates for Subaru models listed on Edmund's site. It is extremely possible that there only is a $500 rebate on the West coast. The only incentives that I am personally aware of on Subarus are special leases. Currently Subaru is offering the Legacy Wagon for $216 per month with $1,200 down for 36 months, the Legacy Sedan for $242/month, and the Legacy Outback for $269/month.

Looking at picking up two 1997 Fords. One is a base Mustang Coupe with Auto, the other is GTS Probe with leather.
Only thing is, while the Probe is here in town, the Mustang is 300 miles north. I know of the carry over, holdback, and rebates on these vehicles, but anyone ever buy a dealer swap? Not sure how this would work or how motivated a dealer would be to bring the Mustang down. Any advice?
  • BrutusBrutus Member Posts: 1,113
    cgking,

What's a one-way ticket cost to the city 300 miles to the north? I'm considering a similar situation and found that the cost of the airline ticket is less than $100. I suspect the dealer up north might be willing to give you another $100 off the vehicle to get your business. You might also look at the cost to rent a car for the one way trip. One thing to remember is that this is a vehicle that you are likely going to be driving for several years. If you want the Mustang more than the Probe, I'd say it would be worth the extra $100 or so to find a way up north to pick it up. You might even be able to talk a friend into a road trip, so all you would have to pay is the cost of gas and one night at a motel.

Does anyone know if the $5,000 of msrp of the Chevy suburban is a national thing? or in just some dealerships?
  • sweeneysweeney Member Posts: 1
I need some help. I factory ordered a 1998 Ford Windstar. The latest word is that it will be arriving at my dealer the week of April 6. My problem is that the current Ford rebate on a Windstar of $1500 expires on April 2, 1998. My dealer will let me come in and pay for the car before that date to secure me the rebate. The dealer also tells me, however, that they have received fairly reliable word from Ford that the Windstar rebate will increase to $2000 after April 2. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone have any advice for me? Thanks.
  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
Thinkbig, it is surprising that any dealership would advertise $5,000 off of a new Suburban. Suburbans always sell well and dealers usually make high profits on them. The only national incentive that is currently offered on the Suburban is the $750 Model Year Transition Cash on '97 models.
  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
I would not be surprised if Ford did increase the rebate on the Windstar to $2,000 after April 2nd, sweeney. I would say that this is a very likely scenario. The Big Three have been waging quite a war recently on minivans. Chrysler, Ford, and GM all have increased the incentives that they are offering on minivans in the past month or so.

We are looking at a 98 Buick LeSabre Custom with the prestige option package. Our dealership here, with all the options, has one we really like priced at $25,500 MSRP. We were told upfront that Buick has a $1000 Manufacturer's rebate till 3/31. They have the car priced almost exactly $2,000 less than the MSRP, at $23,500. I then found out (thank you Edmunds!) that Buick is offering $1,000 dealer incentive on this car, which the salesman told us was what the dealership was willing to go down on their price for the car. How do dealer incentives work? Are the dealers reimbursed another $1,000 from the manufacturer for selling the car? My thinking is there is still quite a bit of wiggle room here for the price. I would like to know how the dealer incentives work between dealer and manufacturer. Thanks!

Are there any first time car buyer or recent college grads rebates on the Olds Intrigue? If there is a recent college grad, what constitute recent?

Dodge/plymouth Incentives - Edmunds has listed a $1000 rebate on Grand Caravans/voyagers and $250 to $1500 in incentives. I called plymouth...that was a mistake. I went to a Dodge dealer...another mistake! CAN SOME PLEASE TELL ME HOW THOSE INCENTIVES APPLY. I am interested i a Grand Voyager/Caravan SE model.

Does anyone know if there will be another rebate for Lincoln towncars after March 31, 1998?
  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
Rightbuy1, you are right there should definitely be some more room to negotiate in this deal. The dealer is reimbursed the full $1,000 for the dealer cash from GM. So essentially by combining the customer and dealer cash the dealer can offer you the Buick for $2,000 off of the MSRP and still make the same profit as if he had sold it at full price.
  • CarMan@EdmundsCarMan@Edmunds Member Posts: 38,514
Obviously only the people who work for Ford definitely know for sure if there will be another rebate on the Lincoln Town Car after March 31st. However given the tremendous amount of support that there is on the model right now I am almost positive that there will be more rebates after this date.

For your information in addition to the $4,000 dealer cash on 1997 models and the $2,000 dealer cash on 1998 models, currently Lincoln is offering a very attractive 1.75% lease rate for up to 24 months.

Is the information on the 98 Mazda Protege correct? I'm finding dealers in my area are quoting only a $1500.00 rebate not the $2000.00 listed.

    Here's a question, Car_Man...

I plan on purchasing a 98 Isuzu Rodeo....any guess on whether it is better to purchase one before the new quarter (Apr. 1) or to wait and see if an incentive comes out.

    Thanks,

Charles, I don't know exactly what region of the country you are in. The Mazda rebate that is up on the Edmund's site is effective in the Western region. I know that it is correct for that region, and it is probably very similar for most other areas.
