And now for a very important question: How did you get the flag of Norway to display by your name? Carl
Anyway, yeah, I even told myself that I wouldn't buy a new car again. The initial depreciation is just too much. Unfortunately, I think the car industry has been in a funk and they are just now getting back on track and producing cars that really appeal to me.
For the life of me, I can't think of anything made in the past 4 years or so that I would really like to have (and falls in around the $20K price range with low miles).
Granted, I could stand to go a little higher, but not much, and I hate to spend $30K on a USED car. Its just not in my nature I guess.
I definitely agree with you about the CL-S, but, right now, I think its the most bang for the buck out there (putting styling aside and considering the 15 second quarter mile performance and power leather heated seats). I almost purchased a used '97 3.0 CL for about $15K, but (i think luckily) I couldn't reach an agreement with the dealer. I think, overall, it would have been more comfortable than my Mazda, but I probably would have regretted the otherwise unworthwhile trade off.
If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.
'11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S
I also was reading about the '98 Audi A4 Quattro.
I don't know, both cars might be in the "unexciting" category. I like the looks of both and the luxury options, but I've never driven either. Ideally, I would like "sporty luxury", but I'd settle for really fast and comfortable.
I didn't know that about NADA (probably not many folks do). That's really disheartening. But I guess it explains the huge discrepency in some cars I've looked up there.
thanks

I seem to have estabilished that 8500 would be a good wholesale figure for the Monte Carlo but reading some of the recent posts brings up another point about color.
Since mine is kind of a dark green, and of course I live in the south, I am wondering if wholesale value on mine could be more somewhere else - like Chicago? Detroit? NYC? Alaska (ok just kidding)? Since I'm a GM Supplier buyer my price ought to be the same on the new car anyplace so I am wondering if trading in a different city would benefit me. But it would have to be enough to offset the trip.
Also on a related note: What about exporting the car? Do people ever sell used cars to different countries and if so how do you do it? Do they also go for black book or is exporting a different game althgether?

I just bought 2, 2000 Lincoln LS's, V8's, roof, Sport pack,17' upgrade with Continental's, heated seat's and -- 6 cd in dash-(post april production) ...sticker still on the window of one of them ($39,750)...7,400 miles and 10,120 very nice..and very clean...........I know we have a lot of import buyers that come to this site......But, I do buy and drive them all.....And these my friend, are great vehicle's --- It's a slim, trim vehicle that is quick , quite, fast , and run's on rails....and will run circle's around most on the road.... ---- So, you can tell, I do like them.....And they make a excellent pre- owned purchase.....they are running at the block around that $26,000 to $27,000 range....makes for a great buy for anybody....
Maybe this will help...
Terry.
Hope this help's..........

Good luck.....

I have a '00 Saab 9-5. Yeah, I know they're not the hottest car at auction. But I've got an incredible lease deal and it really is a great driver's car.
Anyway, one of the ideas I'm always bouncing around is to keep it after lease maturity. Have you been seeing any 9-5's running at auction recently? Mine is the SE sedan with the V6 but I'm looking at how fast they're depreciating in general to get an idea of whether it's worth keeping when the lease is up.
No big rush for the info. Respond when you can. And Thanks! for your insight.
Terry.
I hope this help's

It surprises me sometimes when people don't take advantage of them....Last year about May...? Volvo was running $399 a month x 36 ..for the S80....with $999 out of pocket....that was a great deal --- But, I guess I was the only one that thought that....l..o..l....
So, the question is how much.....2000's a running in and around that $22,500/$23,500 figure....give our take -- $5,000 either way
.....Kidding.....
Maybe this might help....
Terry.
I guess its probably tough to tell since the LS seems to be in a class of its own (an American mid-size sport luxury). But how about an educated guess? Would I definitely fare better with a German car?

These are nice car's but the resale value on them has been in a little trouble for a while...and they are plentiful.......right now 2000 S types are going through the auctions in and around that $17,000 / $18,000 range....
Maybe this will help......
Terry.
They are a great car...great warranty...people love them...and they have done well with all the long distance road test's ( plus I drove one 4,000 miles ) .....but honestly -- I really can't tell what the value will do in another year.
It's kinda like Volvo's .....I really like those car's....Well built, quality no brain damage etc....and I really think they are sharp looking, with a spoiler and some 17" Ronals....but resale on them is just a little above average.....But, you have to remember...my crystal ball is also in for repair..l...o...l...
Terry.
I agree with Terry on the cars.,.. that Maxima ought to do about $5,000 IMO only because you mentioned scuffs and dings...
The BMW is a solid $31K car and I concur here. It's a $28,000-29K car here in O-town with the Black paint/Black guts...
Hope this helps!
Bill in Bay Hill
Thank god yer leasing it! Umm, from what I have seen that car will be way upside down at Lease end. What was the residual tho?
If you had said "Well I bought it and only put $500 down and financed for 72 Months" I may have had to smack you. haha
Bill
You're in good shape on this deal. Here's why. Low Mile Jags are worth a fair whack. And, it's got h/k audio which VERY few Non-VDPs have. It is a very rare option on XJs. I dont love Oatmeal with BRG (Cashmere would be nicer I guess but it beats Charcoal!) but if it's a clean car.. it could do $34K-35K easily at auction. Now, bear in mind, we do make money on used vehicles. So paying $2,500 over cost on a used Jag is like buying a new Lincoln at $500 over invoice. On a car like that the minimum I would take on a fresh one was a $2,500 deal. And I was generally the cheapest place to buy a Jag in North Jersey. So, of course they are making money on you but the salesman isnt going to Paris for a week on you
So at $37K I think you're doing OK when you factor in they probably have another $500 over whatever they paid for it at auction in the car. (Auction fees..transport..detail..etc..)
A low mile 98 is worth $32K, a low mile 2000 is $42K.. Wholesale so you're in the range. I think a quick call to Rosenthal or any of the Other Jag dealers in the area would show that you have a good deal.
Bear in mind that it's high miles that slaughter a Jaguar's Value. Even though a low mile 99 is still worth $33-36K depending on color and such, a 63K mile '99 recently sold for $23K wholesale.
A 1998 with over 70K is worth $18K or so. Big Jump, eh?
So, if you like the car as do I... Go for it. you did well! And dont worry about the no heated seats as long as you can live with them, The car still comes with ASC Which is like the old TRAC.
Bill
95, 97, 99 XJs
It's more of something I happened into (We own the property the store is on...)
I'm still looking for the right store but Im being a bit hesitant. Owners are getting a lot less greedy all of a sudden...
Bill
I don't get it. I see people beat their heads in to get good deals on some cars and they dont even look at resale value. Like we've seen with the Millenias..
I'd rather spend $24K retail and pick up a 97 XJ6 than drive a new Millenia L, but that's just me!
Speaking of the devil... 96-97 Jaguar XJ6? You can do a nice one in your price range.. hell a 1996 Vanden Plas even!
What about a nice European car??
Bill
Bill
Maybe $500 more in the midwest on your car?
I dont think its worth it.. but I suppose it couldnt hurt to e-mail some dealers in the midwest.
Bill
That being said I think the Millenia S is quite underrated...
Bill
My residual is around $22,500. I'm hoping I'll be able to snag the car for mid to high teens ($17Kish) when the lease is done. But I'll keep an eye on how fast auction values drop on the 9-5, just in case.
As always, thanks a million!

On a side note- I really had no idea that there was such a large price difference between jaguars depending on milage. My other 99 has about 65k on it right now, and I bought it new. So, if your value of 23k on it is correct, that means I've lost about 30k in just 2.5 years. I had no idea it's worth that little. I think I'm definitely going to be buying just used luxury cars for now on, as I usually drive at least 25k/year, and keep most of my cars until 200k or so. In recent years, I've just been donating the cars and getting a tax break as the amount I end up deducting is far more than the cars are generally worth on the market, but still, the loss is just too much if I buy new. Thanks again for your help, and let me just say that if all salesmen and dealers were as straightforward as you are, I would have no problem paying a little more to buy a car from you.
Terry.
Wow... thats SUPER Cheap money on that SAAB. Although, Audi doesnt need help selling those 2.7Ts in most of the country...
Bill
IMHO the way to go on a Jag is to buy em 2 years old or to Lease em for 25K/year.
The high miles really rip their throats out.. and with some of the subsidised lease deals... it's the way to go. 60% 2-year residual, deduct 15c/mile every mile over 30K up to 50K miles ($3,000) and you see how its the ONLY way to do it...
No way in hell is a 99 with 50K on the clock worth $30-32K right now...
But, run em into the ground... my 95 has 121K on it, My 97 has 56,500 on it and they both run like new. Well, the 99 is a Meteorite XJR and she's gonna stay low miles... but shes at 23K as we speak.
So, now you have 2 cats! Get an XK-E Next!!!
Bill
On the Ody... seems OK but if it's nice they oughta put a bit more in it IMHO... Still shoot for $21K... the more I look $22K may be a bit optmistic...
And that being said, why not buy a 99 TL if you have to have a Honda? Or a 98 RL? Or some other used car and skip this whole depreciation trap?
Bill
Bill
Just saw a new (?) jag on the road today...it said XK6 on the trunk. Is that a new model? it sure looked new! and probably the sexiest car I've seen.......
oh well, guess I'll drive my chevy to work. gotta have something to dream about!
Bruce
Also, if I do want to buy it, would it be best to deal directly with Ford Credit and not the dealer?
Thanks!!
Greetings from up in Tallahassee where we always count every vote...2 or 3 times!
Thank you so much for the time you put in to help everyone by providing "realistic" figures. Hope you keep up the generosity.
Glen
The new body style is coming out....and they have been a little cold....So, work your best deal with Fomoco....and see what happens
Terry.
Diamante's have been cold since they have come out....huge factory incentives, rebates since day one........ That doesn't make them a bad vehicle ( I like them )....It's just that Mitsu, has been lost in the tree's for a while.....
If it's a ES...and it's nice --- you are looking at that $4,000 ish figure...
I hope this helps....
Terry.
The 2000, XJ8L - went directly to Gund Arena for some baseball guy......And the 2000, S-type 8, went ASAP to a person in Kentucky for his wife....
As a rule....unless I have a Jag customer...I really don't purchase them.......But, I did get a little nutty on a 2000 XK8 convertible -5,400 miles -- pretty car!.-- carnival and cashmere....thank goodness.. -- I was waaaay over bided...l..o..l........But any info, is always appreciated....
Terry.
That's a good Idea from Bill.....here's a few more to ponder...Passats, Mazda Millenia or 626 ES, Maxima's,Volvo S70....and now that I'm thinking about it..a Diamante....or a Lincoln LS
Just remember...buy and drive what you like
Terry.
Prolly was an XK8 or maybe.. if it was a 2-door coupe/converible with a mesh front grille and hood louvers you saw an XKR...
370HP.. 389 lb-ft of torque.. 0-60 in 4.9
Bill
Then I bought and sold a 98 Black/Black (Like that one) and now I have a SIlver with Black Interior 99.
There is no better sports sedan in the world...
And the 95-97 6-cyls are starting to get cheap.....
Avoid the 95s.,. but the 96-97s are amazing cars.... (hint hint)
Bill
So $17K isnt a bad retail price and all... but...
See if they'll take $14K for her...
Bill
