I got a bright idea - how are used Isuzu Troopers and Mitsubishi Monteros holding against book?
  • vodgutvodgut Member Posts: 162
Here's another one, just curious on this:

1995 Subaru Legacy L sedan. Dark Blue. AWD. 4 Speed Auto. Spoiler. ABS/Airbags. 79,400 miles. Single CD player added myself. Looks good outside and in, runs just fine, just a few preventative maintenance things that any 80K car might need. I'd rate it average to good condition.

Trying to decide what I'd get for it, or if I should sell it myself. KBB has 4070 for a trade-in, here it depends on what the condition is, between 3,200 and 3,800. Ideas?

..... Hi Brent .. The color is ok, the miles are a little stiff, but we have a 4x4 and it's a LE .. so if the interior is ok, no Mcdonald invasions, no Popeyes Chicken swirling through the air and seats, and the outside doesn't look like a scene from the movie "Training day" .. then you should be seeing the high $9's, low $10's on a trade ...

               Thanks for stopping by ....

                    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Ok, Let's start this one again .. the miles are low and these are kinda rare - V6, XLE, leather, slider, super tunes .. without actually seeing the paintwork, I'm going to say it's worth in and around that high $11, low low $12's on a trade .. it all depends on how the paintwork looks, I do fear it.

Down Retail Rd, $14,900 in the paper and $13,5/$14,5 should send it to a better place ...

              Good luck ....

                Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Actually these things still bring some money and are still popular .. you have the right color and from what you are saying, it could be a nice one ..

If, it's all there .. service, tires, cold air, no hit's, no paintwork, no rips, no I have 12 kids and the buttons have all been pulled out, no I weigh 350lb's and the seat is broken stuff .. then on a trade you should be seeing the high $3's, low $4,0's --

This would actually be a Great vehicle for Retail Rd, a ultra detail, fix this and that, a great ad for $6,900 and I would bet on a quick sale you would see $5,500/$6,500 even with the miles, it's an Acura, not a Kia - no fear.!

              I hope this helps ...

......... This vehicle should do well in CO .. as a matter of fact, I got some friends out there right now, doing a little skiing in Breckinridge ..

The miles are fine for the year, as long as the service is 100%, rubber is yesterday, no weird Sonny Bono hit's to the sides and it runs like a top .. then I gotta think you should be seeing the high $3's (hey, the books didn't miss this one, wow.!) on a trade .. me personally, I would be stuffing this one in the paper after a great cleaning, a great ad, the service records on the front seat and wango tango .. boom, $6,9 in the paper and let John Denvers ex-house boy buy it for $5,5/$6,500 ... must be the air up there or something .l.o.l..

                Luck .....!

How much do u think I can get for a '91 Corolla, 108k miles, power nothing, 5 speed, light blue, wagon. The a/c went so i know thats gonna put a damper on the resale value. Its also got a performance exhaust (which actually makes a noticeable difference in power). Otherwise it is in excellent shape: new clutch, new radiator, new starter, new battery, etc.

I saw several 2002 Isuzu Troopers (they had 2 tone and cloth interiors, I don't know the model designation) listed for $20,988 with under 15K miles. Are those the LS models? They were listed on a loacl dealer group's website.

I see book (w/s) at $18,900 or so, so it looks like wiggle room. What are your thoughts?

    Terry,

Thanks for the info about the Legend. I'll report back when the car is gone and let you know what happened. One more question: any advice on the one place to choose if I'm going to run one ad? I live in the Wash DC area, so my choices are the Washington Post, cars.com, ebay, AutoTrader, other online used car places, etc.

    Thanks, Phil

    Hi guys,

I am looking for 2002 Pontiac Grand Am SE1 Coupe V6 with anywhere between 15 and 20k. How much should I expect to pay at the dealership?

    Thanks in advance!

I have always wondered the answer to this question. Whats the difference if the service on a vehicle is up to date when its traded? Lets use mine as an example, the Pathfinder. lets say Nissan recommends the 60,000 mile service/tune-up and maybe a timing belt change, the standard stuff for that mileage range.

Scenario #1 - lets say I purchase the service before I trade the car in, get it tuned-up, plugs changed, and then trade it in.

Scenario #2 - trade a vehicle without the service done.

Is it a one-to-one ratio of dollars gained/lossed? Or would I technically get a better trade-in by getting the service performed. What would be the range, if there is a so called range? Would you start at a price of the $$'s a car would bring if service is up to speed, then just deduct the costs of the services needed? Obviously, I would think the dealer will bring the car current regarding service issues before it is sold, not that its always done, but.....

    Thanks,
    Brent

I have had this auto all of four months, and the sad truth is that it just isn't big enough for my family (jamming two car seats, one rear-facing, into the back seat isn't impossible, but it's not easy).

There's no emergency in selling, but I'd like to trade for something bigger sometime in 2003.

It has all of 3600 miles on it; perfect shape, GLX (loaded), cd, etc., etc.

Any advice on how to do well when trading something so new?

    Thanks.

I'm off the infiniti for now and have started looking for a BMW. I found a 2001 330i sedan. Black exterior, beige leather, slider, handshaker. 17k on the clock. What do you peg this puppy at in south florida? In general, what are the 330's doing at auction?

    Thanks

just curious on what the 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser with approx 75k miles is going for at the manheim auction?

are they less expensive than the lexus lx 470?

....... Whoooof, these things are cold, dead cold .. they make an "S" and LS.

loaded up LS's, 2 tone, prem sound, 4x4's are doing the ultra high $14's, low $15's, might see 1 or 2 get nutty and swing $16, these are the ones with 12/15k .. no biggie here -- how many do you want ..?

I like those trucks - I used to have them for demos when I was doing F&I in Oregon. They aren't "pretty" per se, but they grow on you.

....... A Base Corolla with weak air, we have 100k, a handshaker and we have a Star Wars exhaust -- but we have some good stuff, I guess.

On a trade, in and around $500/$1,000 .. but, if this is a nice one, clean, service is all there, deep in rubber, looks 99ish, no meteorite hits, then this would be a pretty nice little deal for someone at college or even going to work and back, folks are looking for the nice ones - so, in the paper for $2,9 and let some nice translator buy it for $2/$2,5 .. it's your call.

..... Good morning Phil -- The easiest, quickest way is to drop it in the WP .. a real nice 4/5 liner (small ones don't work) list it for 14 days .. make sure it's a Great description, have the vehicle detailed, if need be, rent a cheapo vehicle for $25 bucks a week so the Acura doesn't get all gunked up .. have all the service records sitting on the front seat and then see what happens ....

              Let me know ....

........ Grand-am's are rolling through the auctions like, lemmings to the sea .. theres tons of em' ..

Not to hurt ones feelings, people like to drive em', but don't like to buy or keep em' .. extra clean ones, with 8/10k are hardly breaking over that $9,0 figure at the block .. you should be able to buy a real nice, low mileage, loaded up V6 for $10,9 or less ..

               Good luck ..

                Terry.

    ....... Thanks for a great question.! --

This is the one that gets kinda side lined at trade time and causes MORE grief to the potential buyer and seller, than any of that *what invoice is, whats your best price and the guy down the street has em' on sale for $500 less than you ...

Most buyers get very use too their soda stains in the rear seat, the headliner that got hit with the overspray, the compass that was super glued to the dash, the clorox bottle that got spilled in the trunk and the doggie droppings that no one will see along with an ashtray filled to the brim -(but, no one will ever know, right.?) .. and let's not forget that little kiss on the front fascia and since they haven't bothered to check the air or the alighnment of their tires, those little bitty bumps due to cuping. But still, it's their best friend ...

They also have a tendency to forget to change their oil .. hey what's 7,500 miles, when it's only 100 degrees outside ..? So what about that 60k service ..? it only has 67k and I'm going to trade it in 2 months and the dealer can do it for nothing ..right.?

Then of course, there is those famous last words - "It only needs a bath" - ~~ true it needs a bath, battery, it needs 2 new light bulbs for the fog lamps, it needs a ultra detail for $100 ++ to kill the smell and make it look normal, it's needs an oil and filter change, it needs the service, it also needs tires, it needs the front sanded and re-shot from that little kiss and it goes on and on .... most folks kinda forget these little "inconveniences" -- "but all it needs, is a bath.!" .... l.o.l.. sounds like it's worth about $1,000+ Less to me ..

Remember .. you have a salesman trying to sell you a new ABC, you also have to be a good salesman to sell your XYZ. If you want big money for your vehicle at trade time, then make it look, feel and smell big ~ anything less than that, you can just start deducting, cuz' the dealer will, and you can't blame them .....

                Make sense ....?

                   Terry.

Terry: I agree that a clean as a whistle trade will (should?) get you a better price, but I always assumed that the dealer reduces the price, to factor in the need for a service (not that they are neccessarily planning to do one). I've never had a dealer ask for service records when looking at a trade, so I figured they didn't care if I changed the timing belt at 60K (or whatever).

I'm sure they give anything they plan to retail a basic fluid/filter change, but would they really do a major interval service (timing belt, plugs/wires), just because the mileage asked for it? And if it is going to the auction, I assume they do nothing to it.

Since I have seen trades evaluated from the showroom (out the window), is it up to the buyer to pull out the records to try to get a better price? Will the dealer really step up if they do?

  • zueslewiszueslewis Member Posts: 2,353
the service issues aren't usuualy about 30K or 60K "maintenance" stuff. It's where the brake pads in the front are OK to pass state inspection, but will need to be replaced within 3 months. The car won't be sold like that, so there's a $200 brake job.

One of the vents doesn't work right - it's no big deal to the owner, but you can't sell it like that, so there's a $40 vent register and $30 to install it.

Don't forget paying the rock chip guy $100 to do the front of the car - can't sell it with those 8-10 chips in there.

Just those simple items, though not staggering issues, account for $370 the dealer has to consider.

    Hi Terry,

My search for a convertible still continues. I test drove the miata today. Its a nice car. What do you think one should pay for a

White, 12K, 2001, ABS, miata LS, Auto ? The dealer has it listed for 19K.

What would be your ballpark figure for 2000's and 2001's ?

    Thanks a ton!

Another question, Is it possible for people like me to buy from auctions ? Or is it limited only to dealers ? How do you decide on the condition of the car once at a auction.

  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Soooo, your from George W's territory. There is all kinds of auctions for the public .. state, DEA, the Fed house, there is number of them that have "open days" for the public .. but the dealer auctions are for dealers only, with lot's of security nowadays.

How do I check em' out ..? Me personally ..? -- I have the auction run the day/night before .. I run every vehicle of importance to me via carfax and dmv, I get to the auction about an 1 1/2hrs before they ever run and I'm in em', around em' and through em' before the auction ever starts, I got my Elco on em', check for any paintwork, damage, spares, extra keys, books, records - and I'm on headset and palm pilot to the office for any of the stuff that pops up .. usually my work is waaay done, before the first buyers start to show up, with their first cup of coffee and still trying to open their eyes .l.o.l.

.... A little BMW action huh ..? this could be a nice one and the miles are right - but, you did say Black and a handshaker ..?

Black is a great color in Chi-town, NY and San Clemente, but in the south, it's a tuff one to sell, especially in Florida .. I wouldn't think the dealer would have a dime more than $26ish in it .. a fair price for both would be $28ish .. now, a light color in Florida "could" be worth $2 grand more

                Hey, let me know ...

                  Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... That depends .. it depends on the condition, the color and where you live ..

The real clean LC's with 70kish miles are doing "around" $23ish .. the LX's with the same miles will run around $26ish ..

              I hope this helps ...

                  Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Based on what your are telling me, the LX's probably have the high $10's, low $11's in em', so by the time they add a this and a that, just figure $12 .. mid $14ish sounds fair to me ..

The ES's seem to be priced a little better .. they do about a ghee whiz more at the block so figure the low $13's -- and the high $14's, ultra low low $15's would be more of a fair price on the retail side ..

              Again, let me know ...

    Much appreciated.

.... Lookin' for a slick convert .. eh.?

These are both ultra nice, I have put miles on both and are definatly on my top 2 list in that price catorgory .. and now is a good time to buy em', even if you have to go out of state, there's lotsa of winter going on .. and I bet lot's are sitting in garages ..

The 02 SC's with with 4/6k, "in the wrapper" ~ cleaner than the board of health, and twice as sanitary - are doing in and around the that $47/$48 figure at the block .. gotta think $52,0 or -less- will bring one home.

The 02 TT's as above, are running around $30,0ish, who knows - right place, right time might get one in the garage for under $33 ..?

               Keep me abreast ...

...... Sounds nice, right color, good miles, it's a auto, it's a LS, lotsa good stuff on it .. $19,0 ..?

That's a fair price -- If, your an inspector in Bagdad ..

Let's say he fell down and hit his head and forgot to pay his 3rd wife alimony .. $14,5 would be all the money on his end - a fair price for both would run $16,5/$17,0 -- $19,0 did I read this right ..? .. it's a Mazda, not a Mercedes ...

as usual, for the info. After doing the research, my wife says "I don't want a minivan! I don't have a kid yet and I'm not ready to be driving that!"

OK. So the woman wants seating for 7 (for those occasions when her sister is visiting) but no minivan. Really doesn't leave us with many options in our price range. Looks like we might be waiting and saving for another few years and maybe catch an off-lease volvo XC90. Women! ;)

    Terry,
I promised you an update on my 1994 Legend, and here it is. I traded it for a new Honda CR-V last night. I paid a good price for the CR-V, comparable to Costco and other prices I've seen on these boards, and I got $5K for the Legend. Most dealers I spoke with offered me mid-$3K to mid-$4K, sonsistent with your estimates. I jumped at the $5K price. Thanks for all your good advice.
