Like the Lincoln LS, I also own Navigator.Trying to keep my trade difference as low as possible. The Ody I have, is a piece of junk. Have had nothing but problems. Would like to get out of it while they are still in high demand. Few months from now, supply may catch up, my best guess anyway, and depreciation get worse. Would like trade difference in the 3k or so range. Can get brand new TL for 26.5 or so. Maybe pick up a 2000 TL, good miles, $24k. Thoughts?

Well I had to make a fairly practical decision and so placed an order for a new Passat wagon which is otw from the Houston port and should be here in the next couple of weeks or so.

But there is something about Jaguars that sets them apart. There are a number of other luxury sports sedans with very competant mechanicals and comfort like BMW and Mercedes which I like and respect as well. But for some reason over the years Jaguar seems to have a styling element that exudes sex:) From the old E-type to the XJ sedans and the new XK8's they have somehow been able to style and retain an almost voluptuous sex appeal.

I used to be into english cars, my first two cars were an English Ford Cortina and a Triumph TR250. I lived with and paid tribute to the Lucas electrical gods and the poor reliability of English cars. Jaguar suffered from this for years but was able to eventually improve quality and reliability in the 90's and thus their reputation and resale value.

But as I mentioned I cannot afford a nearly new one at this time and although a 96 or 97 sounds tempting I am not sure I can take the risk of any major potential maintenance on such an automobile with 50-60k on the clock. I'm pretty much blowing my budget on a %^#* 28k Volkswagon (still not sure if I should have gone for a used A6 Avant) and need the practicality of a wagon. Although for an XJR I might throw that out the window, LOL.

I envy you and your beautiful rides:)
  • spellboundspellbound Member Posts: 77
What would the average wholesale price be on that XJR on Ebay? Edmunds shows it in the 53k range. I imagine it will jump up quite a bit in price as the auction closes.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    First,

FIgure out what you like... then go from there.

But I'd buy the 00. Think about it... $2,500 is a nice used Stainless Steel and 18kt Rolex men's datejust.

$2,500 is a nice family vacation....

$2,500 is the mother of all TV sets

$2,500 is a nice stereo system...

Or, for me, a few very nice covers (Stamp COllector thing)

See why I dont buy new cars?

The Jags (X300s... 95-97s) and the X308s (98+ XJ8s) are unbeliveably good cars.

And, IMO, they are more reliable than a Passat. Guess who got the #1 spot for initial quality in 98? Oh yeah... Jaguar!

Guess where VW was? Mid-Pack at best.

And I wouldnt worry about major stuff breaking... just the little, stupid things like cupholders, maybe an AC Vent or two and sometimes the power steering column tilt motors fail. Also on occasion the trunk lock keyhole can jam up...

But that's about it. These are very well made cars.

And, a low-mile (In the 40s) 96 XJR is worth about $21-23K wholesale.. A 97 is worth a bit more (Closer to $30K wholesale..) but I have few records on 96s selling.

Why not a 98 XJ8? A 45K mile one can be had for under $30K retail if you look... And it's one hell of a car. Or a 97 XJ6 and the mother of all extended warranties will still cost you less than that Passat....

That 2000 is worth about $52-53K easily IMHO... One of the few Edmunds is spot-on on.

    Sleep on it.. :)

But although I have never sat or driven in one, one thing I have read in reviews is that they are pretty small inside. I am quite a large (very hefty, hehe and tall)person and I don't think I'd fit comfortably in one although i guess there's only one way to find out:) For some reason german cars seem to have a lot of seat adjustment and headroom and so they generally will fit for me. Must be a lot of big germans LOL.

To give you an idea of my size, I was not able to get a comfortable seating position in a Volvo V70, the power seat would not move back enough. I am able to be comfortable in a Passat, and among others I have sat in, an A6, a 325i wagon (snug fit though:), an Intrepid R/T(no I wouldn't buy one, especially new), and a Mercedes E class (better fit if it has telescopic wheel).

My budget limit is 28-30k. I've been mostly considering wagons because I have a large dog and they are practical as far as being able to carry stuff. I could always get another truck but I would much prefer driving something sporty. While I really do like the Passat, my biggest worry is long term durability and crappy dealer service. i don't change vehicles often and need something that will last but I am expecting more problems and maintenance with the VW vs a Honda or Toyota. I guess it's just a trade-off I am willing to live with for the fun of driving it.

Unfortunately my taste in automobiles far exceeds my budget,LOL. My perfect car would probably be S6 Avant. Although that XJR is so awesome maybe I'd remount the seat and cut a hole in the roof to fit in it:)

Anyway, now you have me looking in autotrader! Bad,bad, hehe

And I copied and pasted here for ease of reference "...The Ody I have, is a piece of junk. Have had nothing but problems. Would like to get out of it while they are still in high demand. Few months from now, supply may catch up, my best guess anyway, and depreciation get worse...."
This is one of the few examples of a bad Ody. What year, how many miles, LX or EX, etc.? Most Ody owners could not be happier with a vehicle due to the comfort, performance, space, gas mileage, etc. of the 1999 and later Odysseys.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
Sorry to hear about the Ody ... Rare info...But, it does happen...........Food for thought, consider a pre-owned....you will get, more smile's for the mile's...

This van has had great reviews, however I got a lemon. 99 EX, 24k miles. Had many electrical problems, sliding door problems, rear gate, bad tires. In the two years I have owned, been back to the dealer about 10 times. What can I say? Good thing they are bringing top trade in value.

    Bill,

Can you elaborate on some of your posts. It is a little hard to follow all the post your are responding to. You mention two things in particular that caught my attention. One of them is that you express your surprise at how people drive hard bargins for cars that dont have good resale value and then you mention something about the Millenimum? I take it those Mazdas don't have good resale value and can be had cheaply even brand new. Your second comment is that you don't buy new and prefer new. Can you give some good buys for 2 year old midsize sedans under 20 grand. I don't think buying used Hondas or Toyotas are a good value for the price the charge, better to buy those cars new. Interested in hearing your opinion.

Ooops...guess it would have helped to actually type something on the previous post. Anyway...Thank you both so much for your guidance on the '93 Diamante. I won't hold the bad news against you, Ha! I've negotiated a private sale @ $4,200. The Volvo dealer in Tallahassee was only offering us $3,500 on trade. Looks like my wife will be getting her Volvo this week. Thanks again for all your help.

Today, I was on to Infinti I-30 Lux Edition, looking for low mile pre-owned, but nothing really there. I got a quote on a brand new one for $27k, invoice $27.8. There is some dealer incentive $$$ out there. Lo & behold, I open my mail today and there is a letter from Infiniti, as a previous J-30 owner for $1k off best negotiated price. I call the dealer, and am getting 01 I-30 Luxury, MSPRP $30.1 for $26k. Thoguhts?
  • mmcbride1mmcbride1 Member Posts: 861
I have a 2000 I30L. We love it. I think it's the best of the 3 comparable sedans (TL, I30, ES). $26k is a great price, just make sure it's not a sunroof-delete model. Those will be a nightmare to sell down the road.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
Terry: I took a quick look at the S80 today. Actually like it quite a bit (very comfy), but I still haven't driven one.

Any, whats the going price for a 2000? The dealer has a few 2000 and 2001 with high miles (mid-20s). I think they are probably Boston Coach cars (a limo company that works in my area, they use the volvos as town cars). Look like 2.9s, with leather and roof.

Anyway, how low should one of these go, given the miles/history? Would you touch one for the right price?

I don't mind a higher mileage car, since I only do 7-8K a year, so in three years it will have averaged out to normal miles, and I should get the entire 4 year warranty coverage/

I appreciate your opinions. You both have given me a much needed dose of reality. I am going to give my niece a better deal than she thought on the Maxima and will definitely try and sell the BMW myself. Thanks again.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.........The Infiniti....huh....? -------- ..... Well, they are starting to grow on me.....Kinda remember - they are a Maxima, in a tux, l..o..l...but they are nice cars.... I really haven't seen too many run this year... now that I think about it..

The few, that I have seen are the 2000 I30T's...and they were in that $23,000/ $23,500 range....lower miles ..you know 7,000- 10,000 K...So, they are doing pretty good....Again, take it out for a couple of hour's ..and see what you think...I bought a 99 Infiniti Q45T for my uncle last month -- 13,000 K...White pearl/silver bottom...it was the only way, to get him out of the ugliest car on the road -- A Towncar -- and he loves it.......the new body design we saw at the Detroit Auto show ..was a Beauty... they should do real well with that......

    Happy speeding tickets.....kidding

....... I like those S80's.... I think they are very sharp.....I feel that Volvo, really rang the bell with the design on that car....especially if it has those 17"...Alluna wheels (sp..? )

I will be looking for a couple of these ...this wednesday, one for me...and one for my dentist....99's are running in and around that $24,000/ $25,000++ .....and 2000's are in that $28,000 ish figure...... and the T6's are about $3,000 more........

Drive one..and see what you think...

No sunroof delete on I30. Titanium silver too.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
From looking at the dealers web site, it looks like they have a bunch of the S80s, but they are 2001s. All about 22K on the clock.

Any idea how to value a current year car with that many miles? I think MSRP on a new version would be just about 40K.

Dealer has them listed at $32,995 (not sure if they are certified). What ya think?

    Another dealer2 hours away) listed a '00 with 28K for $26,995

And you ARE as lucky you got an Odyssey that has a high trade-in value as I am to have a 99 GC SE that has NO problems. I do not know which is better? Get a problem free 99 GC SE with low trade-in value or get a troublesome Ody LX with a high trade-in value?
For you it is easy to make a decision to trade
on another vehicle...but for me it is better to keep it awhile or until it starts to give problems and then just bite the bullet and accept the loss.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
......I think, they are called Arrakis wheel's....now, this will bug me all morning...

Well anyway.......The Msrp with the heated seats, wheels, traction control, upgraded cd, etc..roll's just over $42,000.......but the point is, how much...?

I have to think...If the vehicle has that many miles....the $27,000 figure looks good ...try to tighten them up more toward's $25,000 ish figure..and see what happen's ---- and the 01's ....Me personally -- I would feel more comfortable ..around that $30,000/$31,000 number only because of the miles.....

    Hey, you don't ask.....You don't get....good luck...

    Sorry,

Even I have trouble keeping up sometimes!

Basically, What I see a lot on here is that people dont do the proper research. Some people do not look at their total ownership costs. A Good deal on a new Sedan DeVille is not a good deal IMHO. Not when that car loses $20,000 in its' first year. But, for example, a Volvo S80, which doesnt have the kind of huge discounts on it that the Cadillacs or Lincolns have, will hold its' value far better than, say, a Continental and therefore be much cheaper to own over 3-4 years.

I'd say the real bargains in a 2-year old sedan would be a Mazda Millenia, we just retailed a 99 Millenia S with 36K miles, Black, 17" Momo Wheels, etc... Beautiful condition, for under $19K.

A 99 Cadillac Catera can be had for about $20K and is a very nice car, ditto a 98-99 Continental.

Mazdas are also a very good buy used, but the key is to get the car you like, and then decide how to buy it.

Hondas are very good buys new vs used, Camrys can save you a bit when they are 2 years old, but for many people the savings arent enough...

But find the car you like, and then, as a rough guide, look up KBB's "fair" trade in value on a 2-year-old one.

A Passat is a great example, never buy them used! Even though they usually dont have screaming deals on new ones... There's no sedan in its' class that even comes close to its' resale value.

Nice car. And sounds like a good deal. Well, A 2000 ought to do about $23K to perhaps even more at auction, so you wont get killed on this one....

They dont have the resale of an ES300, however, you are also paying a lot less and I think it's a very nice looking car.

    Youre in Jersey, right?

I'd give Montclair VOlvo (My old store) a call. 973-746-4500. Ask for Tom DeMarco (A bit of a charachter but you can get a good price from him).

You can get one for $27-28K and, IMHO, a screaming deal. they are Boston Coach cars, but the ones that Volvo dealers buy are from closed sales and are inspected for frame damage or paintwork before they are auctioned. Also, they are very well maintained and they are highway miles.

And get a Silver one too.... They're out there.

Themn 2000s are doing $25K or so at the closed sales at Manheim... way cheaper than theyre doing at Central FL, Tenn or GA Dealers...

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Lemme guess... Montclair?

They're usually cheaper than anyone else in the state on those cars. Their UC Manager, a guy named Frank Lupo always buys stuff right and tries to flip it quickly. He's a hell of an asset to that store.

And Terry, those are called "Arrakis" Wheels. And, speaking of S80s...My T-6 has everything BUT them. Well, Mom drives it but I leased it.. sigh...

    image

    Yeah... I like em :))))))))))))

ANd MSRP on one of those Boston Coach cars was $39,575 with metallic. (No 17" WHeels but they have cold weather).

Speak of the Devil you sure you werent at the Volvo Store in Winter Park yesterday???

    Hi folks,

My coworker has a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan SE she needs to sell or trade. It has 63000 miles, dual A/C, luggage rack, CD player, upgraded wheels, built-in child seats, as well as the usual stuff. Color is dark green. Car is in South Florida.

How much is fair for a trade?

How about fair sale to a consumer?

    Thanks!

I'm looking at new Subaru Foresters. Can't decide between the two trim levels L and S. The S trim gives you rear disc brakes (instead of drum), limited slip rear differential are the two mechanical differences. The S trim has larger wheels 16"tires P235 vs 15" tires P205. You get upgrade cloth seats, heat seats with heat mirrors and a few other minor things. In your opinion, is it worth the extra 2 grand for this vehicle? I try to keep my vehicles for 7-8 years and average 25,000 miles/year. What is your opinion of Subarus?

The standard 16" wheels (More of a "full" wheel, not as spoke-y) are called "Icarus". The optional T-6 17" wheels are "Arrakis" (more of a busy multi-spoke.

Drove the car at lunch. Very nice, think I'm going to go for it (much nicer than a new Maxima, not much more $). It's a 2001, 22K, and I think I can get it for $30,000 even.

I talked to montclair (about 1.5 hrs. away). They just sold a '00, 29K miles for 27,000.

Per the dealer, residual at 3 years/15 per on a new one would be about 23K, so with the miles I put on, I can pretty much drive the car 3 years for about 7K in depreciation.
