Hmmm... rare beast Indeed. And sitting on $2,500 worth of wheels... plus tires...

    Niiice :)

Make sure ya test drive it tho.... those wheels can bend easily if it lives in potholeville.

Hmm, I think it's a $12-13K car wholesale.. closer to the $12K range wholesale since it;s a stick...Thats what I would assume they have in it... around $12K or so...

Tell em $14K and they have a deal... go to $14,750 if ya have to... but also, they may be a bit greedy if they know what they have (I doubt a Dodge dealer will). Those are very very very very very rare....

Thanks. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm in a position to be able drop that much money on a car right now. I'm just worried that I'll never see another one (5 speed) again... I could do without the 17'' wheels, especially here in potholeland, but they DO look nice. Arrgh!

    Well...

If it helps.... I used to see at the Volvo Auctions... perhaps 1 every 3 months. Maybe one 96 Turbo out of 50-100 is a stick...

If I were you.. I'd see if I could swing it to be truthful. They are VERY uncommon.

If it's ok, I'll e-mail you with the details; could you advise? Oh, and it's not a turbo.

Bill, since you did Volvos, and I am decideing between 2, what is dealer cost on an extended service plan (say to 6/74 or 7/84 or so). I'm thinking of trying to negotiate one into the deal to prevent expensive headaches down the road, and I can probably finagle it at "cost"

You are a machine:) Cranking all these out like that.

On the E320 wagons. I went and looked at a 95 today at some shady local independant dealer:) These things are built like tanks! Also if you take out the 3rd seat and fold down the rears it has as much room as a giant SUV. But the 98's are probably pushing my budget although I found the later model more comfortable to sit in.

I may go look at a 95 that a local MB dealer has. It's smoke silver with parchment (ugh) MB Tex interior (love the MB Tex though, tough stuff). Anyway it has 51k on the clock and it's starmark certified with a warranty. They want an outrageous price ($31,900) for it but I felt her out on the phone a little bit and I'm sure it can be had for less (prob 27k range). To me it's still a bit much for a 95 but maybe at 25k I'd look at it hard.

Decisions, decisions. I do really like the new Passat and it's much more sporty but I'm not sure how it will last over the years. The MB is built like a tank (and sort of drives like it), has more utility and I imagine with proper maintenance will last quite a while.

In the end though I'll probably take the Passat if it would only get here!

    Hmmm...

I dunno. I truthfully never pay attention to what cost is on a warranty as we have fixed, state-set margins on warranties down here in FL. Figure they usually mark em up 50% or so as a rough guideline.

So which one ya gonna get?? :)

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
I dunno... I saw in MMR where a couple with miles in the 60s did close to that... Still, if it's nice I could see it but Im not sure I'd put that in it. The miles are up there... Still, appraisal is subjective, right?

And.. I live in Orlando too! When we gonna go grab a Beer?? :)

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Hmm... $26-27K for it is reasonable for a starmark car... $31,900 is absurd.

God I shouldnt say this and if ya go in there and tell em it'll piss them off.. but that car sold for $22,500 at auction in LA about 2 weeks ago..

Now before you get all outta whack.. Figure that Starmark warranty costs em about $900 or so. Then there's a $2-300 auction fee... Then since they bought the car in LA hauling it back to the bay area is another $2-300.. then you have mechanical inspections.. recon work.. etc...

That being said, the 86-95 E-Class is, In My Not-So Humble opion, the best car that company ever made.

And it is in a very good color.

    Any thougts:
    1995, SL1, 55,300 miles, ABS/Trac Control, A/c, auto, etc. Gold-NJ

I have $600 damage to front fascia and hood. happened 3 years ago and never fixed it since it is really a minor (but noticeable) blemish and doesn't affect driveability. Do I need to fix that or it isn't worth it?

(This is not a trade in candidate) Thanks.
  • spellboundspellbound Member Posts: 77
I won't say anything, I don't have any reason to. But it's nice to know what they have in the car. From what I've read about used MB's it's extremely important to have and keep up the maintenance records. Even if it was purchased at auction the starmark inspection and warranty gives me some comfort on the car and to me is worth a bit extra.

Even MB enthusiasts seem to consider the earlier E class among the best cars they've made. I understand the main problem areas are the climate control system and that the Becker radios were crappy.

Buying a new car seems easier to me as I can pretty easily find out what the local "market" pricing is in relation to invoice or MSRP. I don't have much if any experience with used cars and it's hard for me to know what the "market" price is or how much room there is to negotiate when looking at ads. I see a lot of used cars advertised with rediculous prices, sometimes as much or more than I can buy a new one. The best I can seem to do is use sites like Edmonds.

Anyway I really appreciate your informative posts here. I'll probably go look at the car on Saturday and take a decent test drive then go from there.
  • metmdxmetmdx Member Posts: 270
Thanks. I almost had heart failure when I read Bill's number. Not that yours is a winning lotto ticket but....In looking at KBB and Edmunds, they both give numbers more like 9,500 to 10,500. The car's in great shape....goes through car wash at least 2x month and gets detailed 2x year. Anybody else got an opinion ????
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Well... if it's clean that car is worth about $4,000 wholesale/$6,500 retail or thereabouts...

However, if you are going to sell it yourself, I'd fix the damage.. It's not a matter of "is it worth it?" but it may be tough to sell with visible damage...

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Well,

You're right, it is tough to know as much on used cars as it is on new cars. But the key is to get an idea of what the market is and go from there. Also, condition is important, and not getting gouged is important too.

That being said, the 94+ MB's have a much improved stereo :) And the AC isnt that bad once you get used to it...

Let me know how it goes!

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Sorry if we seem a bit light but I'm basing it on what they're doing at the auctions..

Recently a 45K mile one sold for $11,200 at Auction in PA and a Silver one with 59K miles did $9,500...

Based on that... Where would you peg a 71K mile one? $8,500 is, IMO, all the money.

Again, I dont want it to seem like I'm lowballing you... But it is a high mile car. If ones with 40-50K are doing $11K or so... And ones with 60K or so on them are doing $9-10K...

Try kbb using "fair" or even "good" as a classification, it ought to put you closer....

Bill, thanks for the info on my Galant. The ext warranty is transferable for $100. I honestly did not know I could cancel it and get a refund, there is 41 months and 37k miles left on it. I will call warranty company tommorow and see what kind of refund I can get (paid $900).

Were Volvo really as bad in the early 70's as my experience with a new 1972 Volvo 145S manual, a co-worker's 1972 Volvo 145E Automatic, and another co-worker's 1973 Volvo 144E? (All purchased at Fort Collins, Colorado). It would take too much space in this forum to list all the problems of these 3 Volvos. Another acquaintance had a 1972 Volvo 165 purchased elsewhere that gave zero problems.
My experience with Volvo was as ugly as many have had with Chrysler built (and now DC) minivans. Based on my experience and the experiences of those with bad DC minivans, I would NEVER buy another Volvo.
However, as with DC perhaps Volvo has improved the quality to where they are each comparable with the others.

There is a bunch around.....and 4 wheel season is just about over....the biggest reason is that GM, has a lot of dealer cash and rebate's on the new ones.....

I didn't think you were "lowballing", I was just astounded at the original number. As I haven't sold/traded a used car in years, I guess I'm suffering from "reverse sticker shock". And I think I'm a little prejudiced based on what I seen on dealer lots and the prices they're asking for cars that don't come close to mine.

And this is my only "MUST READ" site in the Town Hall due primarily to their generosity in providing timely, accurate information.
As I read in CR and other TH forums, it has occured to me that I am VERY lucky to get a zero problem Grand Caravan...and was probably unlucky with the bad experience with Volvo.
I had heard old wives tales that Jaguar were finicky, high strung...sort of like a prize race horse and needed lots of tender, loving care. That said, everyone who drove one absolutely loved the Jaguar and said the extra attention was well worth the effort.

Well, since you asked if anybody else has an opinion, I'm going to chime in my 2 inexperienced cents (inexperienced in auctions, anyway, but have quite a bit of retail shopping under my belt).

All I can say is that I'm sure Bill and Terry are more realistic in their pricing. Reason being that Accords are a dime a dozen. Its not that its not a good car or worth the money, but it suffers from another major factor when buying a car. There are just so many of them. The more there are, obviously, the more competitive the pricing can be. When I can walk onto just about any dealer's lot and find an Accord, it doesn't give the dealer much justification to put a high price on it.

Like I said, just my opinion. As a buyer, I wouldn't pay a premium price for such a common car. Sorry.

Mmmmm..... Delmonicos. Had dinner at the one at the Venetian in Vegas on Wed night. Fantastic but I actually prefer Emeril's own place(s) over the Del, but that's me. Wasn't cheap, though. Lookin at the receipt right now - - whoa!

Had a conversation with a pal about Accords. He's looking for a used one and is cross-eyed since there are so many around. I told him to look for one that's been taken care of, receipts and all, since my thought is that many Accord buyers are not car lovers or likers and treat them like refrigerators........ just another appliance. There's just no reason to buy a beater. And everyone selling a used one wants max $$ for them. It's crazy. I'm telling him to buy new to avoid all the BS. We'll see.

on this topic is amazing. You guys are incredibly helpful!!

Can you give me a ballpark number for this one:

1997 Mazda 626 LX-V6, "putrid" green, light tan cloth interior, "meat-cleaver" (5-spd), 50k miles, new tires, in "good" condition (i.e., no paintwork, no damage, other than a door ding or two)

    Northern Virginia area....

For a change, I think I'll be pleasantly surprised, because my guesstimate for this car is quite low....

    Thanks!!!

    Hey guys,

can you tell me what the value of my 4runner is? It is a 98, 4wd, Brown, has sunroof, locking rear diff, fog lamps, trailer hitch package, cd player, lojack system. It is in very good condition, with some usual dings, and has about 29000 on it.

It is coming of lease soon and I am thinking of buying it. The numbers I checked on edmunds are actually more the my buy back.

    Thanks

Well, on your advice I started informally scouting around at 960s; from what I've gathered, there seems to be no clear consensus among dealers what to charge for these things. Looking at autotrader.com, in a 200 mile radius of Cedar Rapids, IA (52402,) I see prices from $13,995 to about $23,000(!)...with no really clear correlations between mileage, year, body style, etc. to account for the huge price fluctuations. Does the market just not know what to make of these cars, or what? It would seem that 850s are still a better buy, for the most part, around here which seems to run contrary to what one would think (i.e. RWDs, especially ones without traction control, get hurt on resale up here in the north.) I guess as a percentage of original purchase price, that's the case, but I'm surprised to see such a spread in prices for basically identical cars. Any insights?
