    ...... Well, here's the good news ________________

The bad news is, we have some rust going on and rust never sleeps .. we have umpteen miles for a 00, you have umpteen miles for a 1990 .. tranny sounds like it may be going bye bye, the inside sounds like it has been under mortar fire and the outside sounds like it may have been a test area for the Marines, other than that everything is going your way. I dunno, sounds like about a $2,5/$3 grand vehicle to me ...

Its a done deal, my MIL loaned us the $1000 down payment and already gave it to the dealer. I back out now and she will kill me.....lol.

Just gotta go pick the car up tomorrow morning.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Sounds like a nice one, I buy a lot of these .. they are "now" the SUV to have ..

This one has no miles, the right color for the area, leather and both sliders .. so if it's a Clean one, seats look hovered in, no I run my SUV through the "grind o' matic" car wash, no test patterns from the local soccer team .. then trade side you should be seeing the mid $18's, "might" "could" see the low low $19's if it glows in the dark and needs -0- ...

Unless there is a big tax savings, me personally, I would be taking this one for a stroll down Retail Rd, $21,900 in the paper and cut it from the herd for $21,0 to the first yuppie with cash ..

                I hope this helps ....

...... We got some miles going on here and it's a handshaker .. I'm thinkin' around the low low $3's, depending on the dealer ...

    ..... 2WD -- 4WD .....?

              Let's just say it's a bare bones 4wd ..

No miles and it's a brand new 02 untitled MSO vehicle .. right .? ~~ sniff sniff sniff sniff, hmmm, I smell a Canadian vehicle here, check it out and let me know, can't have more than $16/$17 in it ..
BK Mitsu dealers inventories go to other Mitsu dealers, something is up ...

Yup, ya did. Its been crazy warm here, up in the 60's and 70's, rotted the ice in no time. Of course today it cooled off into the 50's.

Don't feel bad, I never win anything either.

....... DTS's lot's of bang for the buck here .. nice drivers.

I just bought 5 last week with all the stuff, 2 with the roof, wheels, tunes .. paid $32,0 for them with double nickels for miles, the ones with 20k are doing "around" $29/$30,0 .. so figure the Caddy dealer will have to add the auction fee $300, transport $250, Certification $700(?) a little this and that $400 .. and has to make at least a $1,500 profit .. this should at least give you a real good idea.

It's 4WD... I don't think the full size Montero's come in 2WD. Sorry for the confusion if they do.

Yup, brand new 02, untitled, MSO???, full warranty vehicle. If it's Canadian, would it have KPH speedometer? Would it show up on CARFAX? According to dealer, it was a CN Mitsu store that went under. Was the $16-17K you mentioned based on a Sport model? The 25K ask price sounded a bit stiff, especially with Mitsu offering big cash and low APR's on the 03's. This is an oddball situation for sure, so I'm guessing the usual sources (Edmund's, KBB, NADA) will offer less then typical help. This dealer comes highly referred. But, you definitely have me increasing power to the deflector shields.

As always, thanks for the input.

...... You are talking about the big ugly one, that looks like a pregnant Sante Fe .. right.? - it's a *MW31R*, no sport .. ok, gotcha ..

MSO - Manufacturers Statement of Origin ..

Grab the Vin# and have it run at a Mitsu store .. you are looking for the "port of entry" .. could have had the speedo clocked, ask to see the title, check for a maple leaf in the drivers door jam and a Carfax ..

If all is well, then he has "around" $19/$20 in it, plus the stuff, .. no one is beating the doors down on these, except our "close friends" over in the Persian gulf area, they seem to love em', sent about 20 over there via the Miami port in the last 2 years .. $22/$23 would be about all the money you would want to pay with no toys, the miles save this one ...

                  Let me know ....

Gotta ask -- how are used 2002/3 MINI Cooper S's doing (full load of options -- Package 1, 2 and 3) at the auctions? I'm seriously thinking of trading in the Dodge Caravan (1998, 86,000 miles, base model 3 door with tinted glass in very good condition with new tires and oddly enough bucket seats in the middle row, etc.) in on one. Blue color (light) in the upstate NY area.

What might I expect for the Dodge Caravan on trade?

Are the Cooper S' a hot number at the auction?

Considering buying a new/used car soon. I really like the Focus ZX3 and a local dealer has a super deal going on now on new ones.

But Im considering used to lower the total cost. Used Foci dont have a good rep. Saturns have been growing on me, my sister has had good luck with her 97 SC1. The SL sedans appeal to me and 2-3 yr old ones are everywhere. I found these advertised at dealers:

01 Saturn SL 5 speed, blue, gray int. 30k miles, AC, CD and nothing else, $5495.

00 SL2, dark purple (blackberry),black interior, 5 speed, AC, PW, PL, PM, CD, cruise, keyless, alloys, 32K, $7995.

Do these prices sound reasonable, high, low? Im in Columbus Ohio.

And just to stay on topic, what if anything is the trade-in value of a 94 Escort GT, 132K, automatic trans., black, moonroof, AC, PW, PM, cassette stereo, good shape?
  • garywgaryw Member Posts: 116
You confirmed my thoughts. I was thinking about $22k retail for the Disco...man we do not want to swap out for the Odyssey but we need to seat three littles plus any other piggies who come along for the ride.

Someone is gonna get a steal...arrghhh!

So I've settled on an Audi TT 225 coupe. Found one in Dallas, 30k miles, exterior is in good shape, interior looks like it has about 50k miles on it, scuffs here and there, couple perforations in the leather. Black/Black, Audi Assured, Xenons, Bose, Quattro, [non-permissible content removed] Toasters, new tires, and ESP. They picked it up at an Audi leasing sale. Asking $29k.

the '02-'03 Focus is still wraught with problems. Avoid. The Saturn's a good choice.

On your '94 Escort, I'm sure it's nice, so you should sell it on your own. You'd probably be offended (as would I) over what the dealer would offer ($500-1500).

I'm planning to sell the vehicle described below. Can you tell me the real world price if I sell it as an individual?

1998 Ford Ranger XLT Extended Cab - 3.0 V6 - Black over Gold color with Tan Cloth Bucket Seats and 5 Spd Manual Trans. 70,000 miles. New Goodrich white letter tires on Alum. Wheels. Bedliner. Tow Package. A/C and all power. Would rate as above average with no damage. Only problems are broken armrest on console and broken passenger seat slide lever. Well maintained on maintenance schedule. Zip code is 79414 (Lubbock, Texas). Any advice appreciated. Jim

They're looking to buy their last new car and want to sell theirs privately.

'91 Toyota Camry DX, Auto, Blue, 90K miles, 2nd owner, better than average shape. Southern California vehicle. Driven for the last 10 years by a little old lady (mom), who averaged about 4500 miles a year.

I'm thinking they should slap a $3500 price tag on it, and take $2800.

..... These are super cool, the little Mini "S"s. Seems to be as popular this year as they were last year .. kinda remember, I see them before most folks and most dealers will run the "new" units through the auctions just to "test market" them (and not pay commissions or floorplan), like Hummers, Murano's, XC90's, stuff like that ..

Right now, a 02 "S" with 3/4k with all the bells and whistles are doing in and around the $21ish figure .. 03's with 2/3k are doing "around" the $21/$22ish, I have seen them do as high as the $23 figure depending on the color.

When you say it's a base Caravan, you mean it's a 4 banger too .. right.? - miles are waaay stiff, sounds like a $2,5/$3,0 vehicle to me .. might want to take this one down Retail Rd, you know the drill ~ a great detail, proper service, super duper Ad ~ $5,900 in the paper and say "hasta la vista" at the first $4,0/$5,0 ...

                 Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Sounds like you get a Bingo card with $2,5/$2,8 ..

.... I wouldn't be so shy around the Focus, they have had some recalls, but the 02/03's should be fine .. at least they are honest about it, could be like Hyundai and have just "silent re-calls" and tell nobody .l.o.l..

Saturns are all over the place and you should be able to pick em' up cheap, especially 5 speeds .. the 01 seem's fine, the 00 SL2 would make everyone feel better at around $7,0 .. the GT, Tons of miles, I agree with Zues .. a nick, maybe a ghee whiz on the same day that Venus aligns with Neptune.

               I hope this helps ...

                 Terry.

....... Hey Jim - Ok, color is a little eh, um, ah, dark, we have a Ranger XLT Xcab, with the 3.0 V6, 2wd, no help from the handshaker, miles are a little tall, but that's ok, you are from George W. territory .. :)

If it's a clean one, no Popeyes chicken in the back seat, no 200 cases of spent beer in the liner .. down Retail Rd, $7,500 in the paper and snatch the first $6,0/$7,0 ..

                   Let me know .....

                      Terry.

....... Aaah, I must be reading this wrong .. it's a 01 225 coupe, and we have -30k- right ..? it needs a little this and a lot of that, basically Not, a "stand tall" vehicle .. lookin' and feeling 50k .. right .?

$29,000 .. thats a fair price, a very fair price -- IF, someone is shoving a AK47 down your throat .. gheeez. I'm paying $23ish for the ones with the miles in the teens and these are the "glow in the dark", the super cleans, Jam-up and jelly tight ones .. You need to have a "Come to Jesus" meeting with this guy and offer him $25, $26 if he does all the right stuff and makes it right ... $29 .? I have no fear, and even I would never ask that much ...

               I hope this helps ....

I guess I have a good feel for this after all, and just don't trust myself....I offered him $25k, and he came back with $27k if I bought it before the end of the month (April)...$27.5 after. I told him nope. Glad to hear they're fetching $23k at the auctions...I think I'll talk to a local dealer about getting me one at the auction.

Hi all. I'm new to this board, so my apologies in advance if my question is a repeat of something that has been covered. Do the Edmunds and Kelley Blue Book trade-in prices reflect what dealers will actually give you in trade?

I am in the process of buying a new Honda Accord. After negotiating a price that I'm satisfied with, I decided that it might be worth it to forego a few extra bucks that I might be able to make in a 3rd party sale by trading my current car (1989 Accord LXi coupe) and saving myself the aggravation of trying to sell it on my own. I looked up the info on Edmunds and Kelley Blue book ($1,500 trade/$2,100 3rd party sale). However, the Honda dealer will only give me $700 in trade. Is the dealer just trying to make an additional $800 in profit on my trade, or are the Edmunds and Kelley values just meaningless? I realize that with a car of this age, the dealer will be selling to a wholesaler rather than selling the car himself, but shouldn't this already be reflected in the Edmunds and Kelley quoted values?

    Here are the specifics:
1989 Accord LXi coupe, Monterey Green, automatic, clean inside and out, 153K miles, Albany NY
Any insights would be much appreciated.

First, this forum is the gracious on-line home of some the nicest folks to buy/sell/trade pre-owned vehicles. Chief among them is Terry (rroyce10).

If you post a few more details about your vehicle he'll give it his best shot at fair values private sell & trade-in. He spends ALOT of time actually buying cars at auction then selling 'em. He knows that certain colors/options make certain cars FAR less desirable than the simple formulae say...

SO your covered year, make, model. Terry will need options (everything you can thing of, because some years an LXi means on thing and others another). COLOR. MILES. CONDITION (especially of the PAINT & damage from collisions/other body work).

As to where TMV comes from, well the good people at Edmunds have a trademark on that secret, but word is the sample some stats from auctions private sellers, lenders.

Finally, KBB is the same sort of PROPRIETARY system. They have their own spies at the same places Edmunds does. They have a product that is PRINTED, so there some lead time.

And although far from a pro, I've been hanging around here enough to have learned a couple of things:

One - a car is worth what it's worth on any given day. Tomorrow, that used car manager will have a neighbor's daughter looking for nice used car like your Accord.

Two - auto value guides still don't buy cars for what they list. Terry (rroyce) can't wait until the on-line guides have a link that says "sell us your car"!!

None of this is a knock on any car or any guide - just the reality of the market.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Local Caddie dealer near me is up to it again. (2) 01 Catera's - between 7500 and 12,000 miles. 1 silver and 1 white. I'm assuming loaded up with all the goodies including On-Star. Certified (why I don't know). In Boston.

Between $27K and $28K. How many Tag Hauers should there be in the glove box???

Hi guys. Thanks for the warm welcome and the info you have given so far. This is a great forum.

Terry--if you can help me with some reasonable pricing info, I would much appreciate it. I am not looking to make a fortune , but by the same token, I resent being 'taken' by a dealer.
Here's some info on my car--I have been the only owner, and live in Albany, NY. The car runs great--no mechanical problems that I know of--it's just time for a new car.
1989 Honda Accord LXi coupe, 153K miles
Monterey green with beige cloth interior
Automatic, 4 cyl,A/C, power steering, power windows, tilt, cruise control, am/fm/cassette
    Interior: SPOTLESS
Exterior: One spot of rust (silver-dollar-sized)below the fuel door; One small dent on the hood (overzealous mechanic tried too hard to close it)
My guess is that it falls somewhere between 'good' and 'excellent' on the KBB scale.
That's about all I can come up with. thanks again for your help.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
High miles:153K, Any rust is still rust, Any visible dent is still a dent, soon to be a 15 year old car. Maybe average condition to fair given the rust and mileage.

It really is a car for retail road.
First thing, get it to a good mechanic for a COMPLETE mechanical inspection. Include ALL maintenance records as well when people come to look at the car. Deep in rubber, no mechanical problems, all maintenance up to date, maybe start at $1900 and take the first $1200 or greater offer. No maintenance records, not deep in rubber, any mechanical failings, I say trade it in; but try and get a couple of hundred more.

No matter what the guides say, a 15 year old car with 153K on it, some rust, minor dents, even a Honda is a tough one to sell.

    What say you Terry?

    Hi,

I'm looking for the trade-in value for my 2001 Nissan Pathfinder SE 4x4. There's about a $2k difference between KBB and NADA, so I'm not sure which one is closer. Here's the stats:

    Miles: 32,000
Options: Bose/sunroof pkg, Auto trans, tow pkg, 4 yr/60k extended warranty
    Color: Sierra Beige
    Location: Wisconsin
Condition: Excellent - did have side collision, but no visible signs of repair (at least to un-trained eyes)

Am I required to disclose to a dealer that it's been in an accident if they don't ask me? I remember a few years ago a salesperson telling me..."if they don't ask, don't tell".

    Thanks a bunch!

It's not going anywhere for another 12-18 months, and I have a pretty good idea of what I could get for it, but let's see what's up today:

    * 1996 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 dually Club Cab
    * Cummins diesel
    * automatic transmission
    * SLT package: power windows/locks/mirrors, leather steering wheel, frigid AC
    * full-size rubber bed mat, no rust underneath
    * Infinity AM/FM/cass w/aux CD capabilty
    * 3.54 axles, limited-slip, no tow pack
    * full length running boards (diamond plate)
    * forged aluminum wheels (all 6)
    * Michelin commercial-duty LTX, deep rubber (1 year old, 13K on tires)
    * new stainless steel exhaust

I'll ask about this one for a friend who's looking.

2001 Toyota Tundra, red/tan, SR5, 4wd, x-cab, V8, auto, 49k, pwr win/locks/mirrors, a/c, am/fm/cd, knee deep in rubber, good looking truck. Dealer's asking $24,900. Seems high to me since you can go down the road and get a new one for $28k. What's a good price for him to offer?

..... Welcome aboard .. you know how they have all these new reality shows on TV .? then welcome to "Reality Car Central" , the car biz way ..

Ok stud boy here we go .. we have a 89 Honda Accord LXI, color is uh just ok, it's a coupe, so no help there, we have a 153k lotsa miles, but it's a 1 owner and you know the guy, no slider - right.? .. it's an auto with the power stuff, so you got some help there, but we have a little rust and rust never sleeps ...

By the way, there is no such thing as an Excellent condition in a vehicle, unless your driving a 02 SC430 with 4k on the clock, right color and it "glows in the dark" ..

All righty then, if this dude is ultra nice and clean, service is 100%, then $700 might be a little light, maybe a ghee whiz, "maybe" $1,200 if everything is going your way .. but I have a feeling you might not get a dealer to stretch that far, this dude is auction bound and he want's to cover his end ..

Me personally, I wouldn't even bother with a trade, this a Great candidate for Retail Rd .. a super clean and detail, a super great Ad in the paper, all the service records on the front seat and $2,900 in the paper and cut it loose for $2,1/$2,500, this one won't last long .. everyone is lookin' for a nice clean driver for someone - I'm surprised that Mathias hasn't contacted you by now .l.o.l...

Good luck and let me know ...

                      Terry.

....... We have to quit meeting this way ..l.o.l..

01 Tundra, V8 SR5, 4x4, Ecab, auto, 49 klicks, right color and new sneakers .. I can't say about Alaska, but in the lower 48 they get stupid $$ all the time .. sounds like $18/$19 too me, but I wouldn't be surprised if they put $20 in it, I saw a few run last week and they hit $20 and they had 50/55k and it hasn't snowed up north in months, well at least weeks and weeks .. $25 ..? naaaw, maybe $21,9/$22,9 ..

                     Terry :-)

I agree, they are gonna start talking soon.

Anyway, thanks on the Tundra, that's what I thought. Was in there with the Chevy and asked them off hand what they would give me for it (was waiting for my friend to come back), they floored me with $3500. I asked them if they were nuts???

Ok, a couple others, we are on the hunt for a beater truck, our 94 Chevy is far too nice to be bouncing down the back trails.

Its a 1994 Chevy K3500, reg cab, green/tan, no tailgate, fair condition, needs tires, 6.5L TD, manual trans, 4wd, silverado, pwr windows/locks, am/fm/cass, 146,638 clicks. The guy is asking $6900 (private owner) and since we saved so much on our car purchase....hehehe, I'm thinking about tossing $5k his way and trying to take this beast home. What say you? Am I too light on my offer? It looks pretty leaky and beat up, but would work for what we need.

Its either that one or hubby found a 93 T100, V6, manual trans, reg cab, longbed, 4wd, 108k, black/tan, in fairly good shape. Asking $6995.

Got to get a second truck that he can beat on, I need the 454 all summer for pulling my horse trailer and so he doesn't trash it in the woods.

Welcome to our ever expanding used car lot, lets see, we have my dad's 83 GMC 1-ton, runs but doesn't go, our 94 Chevy, our 85 Jeep, runs when it feels like it, and our 01 Corolla.

for the info on saturn and focus. Drove a new ZX3 and really liked it, zippy and tight like my Escort GT. What a shame this car has such a bad rep.

Also drove 2 Saturns today, a bare-bones SL and an SL1 with some options. I like how they ride and take corners - much better than my wifes Cavalier and not what I expected. Im leaning towards one of these.

Of course the barren SL ran perfectly while the nicer SL1 had the shimmmies and pulled. Assuming a tire balance and pressure check cures that. Its an 00 SLI, 28K, 5 speed, dark bronze out, tan in, AC, CD, PW, PL, PM, spoiler, keyless, alloys. Im thinking mid 6's would be a price to brag about.

Thanks again for the help - and the always entertaining and informative topic.
