Did you recently take on (or consider) a loan of 84 months or longer on a car purchase?

Pondering trading/selling my 99 BMW 528i w/premium pkg, sunroof, cd changer. Mint condition (no, really) with 49k on it. CPO goes with car. Uncommon Sienna Red w/sand interior.
I bought 6/03 for 33K. What's realistic trade/sell. Thinking Highlander/Pilot/MDX as new vehicle (don't say it).
Thanks,
metmdx
When trading in a car, do you get full allowance of trade price towards new car or net (trade - amount owed on loan)to reduce sales tax?
Thanks,
metmdx
From the values that terry gives out, there shouldn't be any mojor issues into getting a loan from a bank. Most of the time you are talking about private party value for sales, and since most banks will finance 90% of retail book, there shouldn't be a huge problem there.
Unfortunately, banks, loans, etc have no effect on the value of a vehicle, it is simply the amount of money that the vehicle is worth.
The only thing to consider is that the Accord will need a timing belt in about 12k miles or so. Seems like other than that, you are in decent shape on the car.
2. It runs.
3. It is a 4 door sedan.
Lots not going in your direction: miles, green, lots of blemishes, did I mention the miles.
It is going to be a tough one to sell for much more than $1200 without ALL maintenance records, and nearly new tires. This means all maintenance records per the owners manual. Even at that, it may be time for another timing belt soon which could hurt the value.
Try a good detail, a nice ad listing it at $2500 and first offer of anything $1500-$2000 should find it a new home. The miles are a real killer. If you have the maintenance records, this would be a good car to sell to some high school kid (or the parents), or a college kid. Seems $2500 is about what the college crowd looks for in a decent driveable well taken care of car.
$1000 trade in would be a reasonable amount. (unless trading at a Saturn dealer which they may over-allow a bit more)
BTW you did not mention what you were going to replace the car with, or if you already have another vehicle. If you are going out to buy a nice big gas guzzling SUV, consider keeping the car for a while as a daily driver to save on gas and to keep some miles off the newer vehicle.
considering trading in a 1996 jaguar vanden plas with 81,500 miles, fair condition (kellys). Midnight blue with very nice interior.
purchasing 2003 Saab 9-5.

year, make, model, trim, mileage, int/ext color options(or lack there of), location, etc.
from what I pulled on an XJ6 with those miles, I would guess about 9-10 maybe 12 with new tires, very clean, etc.....
Are you discounting the car that much mostly because of the miles? Edmunds takes off alot of trade-in value based on the high miles, but even with the miles and the condition reported at "average" the trade in value suggested by Edmunds was still around $2100.
Thanks for your post. The car is a daily commuter - I just think it's time to upgrade the fleet, possibly with a new Corolla, Civic or something on that order. I have an SUV at home already-we're looking for something small and inexpensive. I won't be shopping to choose a model for another month or so.
Any knowledge of reliability on this model year? The miles are low, but it is 5 years old...
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
How about this, go to any online car listing. Do a search for similar car with miles between say 100K to 130K and see what the asking price is at the dealers. $3000 with some dealer backed warranty and everything fixed is about expected retail. Subtract the blemishes, detailing, any repairs/maintenance a dealer would do to sell it, plus the profit and overhead, and you can see that it could easily be under $1500 trade in.
You are still much better off taking your time to clean it up, bring maintenance up to date, make sure it has good tires, and selling it yourself.
The super low miles are great, but service on an XJR is no drive thru at Mcdonalds, it costs Big money for service, an air condenser alone is $1,800, a power window failure will only cost $300+, just for the grins and glory ..
If this is going to be a daily 500+ mile a week driver, then I might put a pass on this little darlin' - unless, you have a high end Tech in your back pocket, or your His bookie and he's into you for some large cash -or- a superb warranty .. besides all that nonsense, $30,0 is not any big deal, the dealer might, "could" maybe have $24,0 in it (more like $22/$23) ~ $27/$28 is ALL the $$ on this dude on the retail side ..
Good luck and happy motoring ..
Terry.
Hope you had a good time... no computers, no cars, you musta been going nuts.
Welcome back!

Dk Red 1990 Corolla DX Station wagon. No rust except in a base-ball size ding rr q-panel. Probably rusted dirty parts underneath; 14 years in MI will leave a mark.
But no real problems, clean car, needs brakes, needs tires, needs a timing belt -- never changed -- has 84k miles presently.
I wanted the silly thing as a winter beater and whatnot, despite the idiot belts. Well, I didn't bring enough money to the table.
The dealer offered them $1500 for it.
Some lady drove it around the block and gave them $1800.
Come again??? These older Toyotas are stout, no doubt, but $2,x00 by the time it's fixed up, that's a lot of granola for an old beater.
My wife informs me that in the world of antiques, they call this sort of thing "Whore-House Prices".
Sheesh... I guess I'll keep looking; the students are back and the driving is like Italy, only without the skill.

l.o.l... actually it is kinda weird, considering I have had a cell phone since 1987 and the wireless computer doesn't work well in Alaska .. plus asking the deck stewards "hey, you haven't seen my phone have ya" .. the curse of technology ..

Thirty three thousand dollars ..?
Did I give you that number ...? $33,0 ...? I don't think so .. I been off the crack pipe for awhile now and I still can remember my name .. $33,0 ..?
Trade side, in and around the mid $18's, my partner just bought one that glows in the dark and barks at the moon with 25k and paid $21,0 .. the cpo will save this one, down Retail Rd $23,9 in the paper and wave Bon Voyage at $22,9/$23,5 ..
Nothing like a little good news to start your day ..huh .?

We drove to Anchorage and back yesterday, in that time we went through 3 cell service providers.....and only one was ours.....all in the course of 300 miles. Nothing like making a 600 mile round trip in one day.
No wonder my Explorer has 46k on it and I've only owned it 6 weeks.....it had 41k to start out.
Did you have fun? See any moose, bears, caribou, sitka deer, birds, fish, anything?
In the wrapper - showroom floor clean - new brakes front/rear - new tires -
67000 miles!! Southern California
Thanks!
About my follow-up....does the "gross" trade in or the "net" (i.e. after loan payoff) apply towards reducing sales tax?
Sorry and thanks.....

Submitted for trade, dealer wouldn't go over $7500, I wanted $8500. Took your advice, dropped $1k on detail and service and it sold instantly for $11k to the first person who called. Probly could've gotten $12k+ as I'm still turning em away!
If you're ever in Norcal look me up -- I owe you a beer :-D

PS Pics of car still up at http://sc300.5avage.com
Maybe could of got $12,0 .. but the nice thing is, it's done and you got the cash .. so what are you driving now ..?
Terry.
Terry.
Trade side, might see $11/$11,5 .. down Retail Rd, maybe $13,5 and take $12,5ish .. lot's and lot's of Civics at the auctions right now, plus the Honda dealers are blowing out the 03's for chump change .. right now it's easier to sell a clean 98/99 Civic than a newer one ..
Let me know ...
Terry.
A6's with the 4.2's .. two weeks ago I was tripping over them (literally) at the Columbus auction, had to be 80+ ..
Terry.
looks, feels drives a like a 20ker, waay deep in rubber, no terrorist attacks in the interior and no K-Mart hit's .. the miles are killin' this one ~ trade side, in and around the ultra high $19's, low $20ish, maybe a tinge more in your area cuz' it's a SE .. Down Retail Rd, $24,9 in the paper and $22,9/$23,9 get's a new owner ...
As usual, let me know ..

99 Audi A8
Quattro
46,000
Dark Green over beige
Sunroof
Bun Warmers
17" wheels
Leather
Clean Carfax
He bought it in Indiana from a non Audi dealer but he lives here in Boston. He picked it up for $24K.
Did he do OK?
Glad you had a good trip, maybe one of these times you'll make it up to Denali National Park, very beautiful. Its about 50 miles south of me.
My Explorer just turned 46k......OUCH......glad its a 97. Course I think the dent in the front fender hurts its value more than the miles. Don't ask.....lol.
'97 Volvo 850 T-5 wagon. Maroon with black leather, 51k miles, every option available (disc changer, 3rd seat, moonroof, auto, the works.) Seriously, it's in showroom condition...even still has that "Swedish car leather" smell. I should really take my own advice and stay off the car lots.
2000 Integra GS-R, 42k miles, 22203 (northern VA, metro DC), std warranty til 3/04. Black, w/std options. Interior in good shape, exterior decent to good (one good sized ding on passenger side since I moved to VA)
The dealer offered 10.5k, probably would come to 11k. Better to trade or sell privately? It's a lease, the lease is up next month, so I can turn it in and walk away, as well. The payoff is about 11.5k+6% florida tax.
Thanks!
*breaks down* ok, ok, I admit it, I visited a used car lot on Thursday. But, but, they had a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, red, like new, $33,995. Good thing I can't afford it.
.. >> I would have driven down and bought ya a beer. Its only about 400 miles from me. << ..
.. How many car lot's are there in that 400 miles ..?
.. stay away from the car lot's ...

Dealer probably has $8,5ish in it .. a fair price for both, 10ish/$10,5, $9,999 would be a Great price ...

Sold through university online classifieds (2-3 msgs a day, but great response), a 2001 Toyota Sienna LE in silver with the "normal stuff" plus pwr doors, no slider, no leather, with 20k miles (!!!).
Advertised for $17k, and when it was sold, I simply called them up and asked how they did. I'm kinda shy, but in a nice way :-).
They got $15,7 for it, which strikes me as cheap, since a new one even in Jan 03 was at least $22,500...
Anyway, thought I'd share that here.
From a personal angle: What should a 1998 Sienna LE, dk red with 84k miles sell for?
It's in good shape with the odd scratch, nothing deep, tiny ding, no dents, no accidents; got records from 54k with oil changes every 3-4k by moi. Everything up to date and runs like a top.
I'm thinking we don't need TWO of the silly things... Beater for me, Vibe for Madame, keep the '03 Sienna...
Terry? S'il vous plait?
TIA and have a nice Sunday!

I am interested in buying either a 2000 or 2001 V70 AWD XC. I have found two that interest me more than others (I don't know why).
a) 2001 white in Phoenix, loaded with Nav. 31K miles
b) 2000 white in Sac. CA (winter Volvo) 57K certified 6 years 100K.
Any thoughts on pricing both cars have leather, heated seats.....cold weather pkg....
thanks
PS
now living in NY but bought first volvo at Winter in Sac-in 1987 and have numerous friends in both Sac. and Phoenix. Will go any where for the right one at the right price!
thanks again!!!!
Miles are getting tall, but it's a Yota .. probably worth in and around the mid $8's on the wholesale side, down Retail Rd $10,9 get's it started and $9,5/$10,5 get's a new driver ...
I wish I would have caught the ad on the 01, a quick clean and detail, a quick trip to Detroit, a quick $500/$700 .l.o.l..
