Many, many thanks. Sorry -- Car does have third row seating package, rear air conditioning, towing (never used), running boards -- every option other than the rear air deflector. Metal and rubber are great. Yes, we're in Minnesota.
I was looking for the "simplicity" of a lease extension, but I see that's not do-able. I will mix it up with the TFS manager at the appropriate time per your suggestion.
As to the TFS interaction, one other idea -- will it make any difference whether I offer to finance the buyout through them? We could pay cash or finance/pay off early.
BTW, I presume offering to buy an extended warranty through the dealer wouldn't change your opinion on the dealer involvement.
...... The dealer, Toyota, TFS, Bob's bait and tackle are 4 "separate entities" .. getting the dealer involved is like taking your Mom with you on your honeymoon .l.o.l...
But, thats a good idea about seeing what TFS will do as far as the finance aspect, you don't get any points from them for the warranty unless you can go direct, but it won't hurt to ask - they just might send you back to the dealer for that, just keep it separate ~ but straight in your mind ...
Looks like ya missed one. :-) Re-post from a couple days ago.

Does this guy have relatives in Alaska ..? is he a insominac, like Robert Dinero in the movie "Taxi Driver" and drive all around for 80/90 hrs at a whack ... ? Whoa .. ouch .. uhm, aahh, well, hmmm, this guy needs to get a bus permit ..

Quick story couldn't resist. Had to go to Hawaii about a month and a half ago for a National Convention. Of course wife and daughter had to come along. Then my Mom heard about it and had to go (paying her own way but staying at our hotel). My wife's comment was "I'm going to the most romantic place on earth and I have to be there with my mother in law". I told everyone for over a month to just call me Ray Barone. :-) Now back to the previously scheduled topic.
Every now & then we hear back from someone who has received advice from Terry and how their numbers compared with Terry's. Not only do we all owe Terry a HUGE thank you for putting in an inordinate amount of time with his gracious and accurate appraisals; but, I think that it would be common courteousy to report back on "how things went down". Kinda like a parent preparing their kids for college, school, a big exam, and then never hearing the results - what a bummer!
I just recently purchased 2 new cars in the last 6 mos, and, unlike the average american, plan on not requiring Terry's services until atleast 2008. However, I still have this thread "bookmarked" to see what's going on "out there" and how much people are finally negotiating with dealers on trade-ins.
125k on a 99 is nothin' up here. Saw that F-350 the other day for sale at the Ford dealer with 150k on it. They also had 2 other 99 F-350's with 104k and 106k.
To find a 99 with less than 100k is a flippin' miracle. Heck, I about fainted when I saw the miles on my 97......all of 41k. Of course I know *why* she got rid of it with those low of miles.
Jolie *who knows if the miles are too good to be true....they usually are and there's a big reason for it*
i have 89 cadilac seville sts with around 130,000 miles. it is in very good condition with the usual blemishes and stuff that any almost 15 year old car would have. i inherited this car from my grandfather when he passed away several years ago. anyway i am in the market for a new car and most of the dealerships i have been to vw, mazda, honda, ect. basically want to give me $100.00 and a lolipop for it. cuz as they tell me, there is basically nothing they can do with a 15 year old gas guzzler except sell it to a wholesaler.and being that gas is kinda expensive now i can see there point. but $100.00?? its got to be worth more than that at a dealership.
On trade, it might be worth the lolipop. There is just no way to judge a 15 year old car with 130K without seeing it. If you have several offers from different dealers for a similar amount, you can about bet that is all it is worth wholesale.
Here is what you need to do with the car. 1. Get it inspected for the big issues, hopefully by on ASC tech on the side for $50. 2. Clean it up. 3. Put an ad in the paper for $1000 obo and hope for the best.
The newer the tires, battery, fluids, etc, the easier it will be to sell and the more Ben Franklins you will likely see.
BTW post your location. There are certain areas of the country where a car like that has a certain niche market, still not worth much more than a few hundred dollars, but easier to sell.
Aka: it's not the miles, it's what they do to the value .. a clean 150k 97 Suburban, Land Cruiser will sell in a "nano second" if it's been cared for, they kinda reach a certain level then they kinda hover around it .. it's just that some imports take an a## whooping cuz' of the miles, VW's seem to get a pass when it comes to high miles, but a 150k 99 Accord will sell 10 times faster and get more peso's ... hmmm, and by the way, were did you see these vehicles ...?
There is a "niche market" for big Detroit iron in good shape: It's kids who use 'em as interior volume to play their big, fancy stereos in it This is certainly not a good car on a trade in. Too little car and too many mouths to feed until someone buys it at auction. But I disagree a little with dk on the "ask $1k" scenario. If it's really as you say: Old but cared for, high miles but decent shape, no leaks, exhaust falling off, that sort of thing... 130k isn't that much for a good engine... I'd clean it up, put it in the paper for $2,400, and after a week or so, drop it down to $1,900. They'll be hitting on you like a bunch of horny monkeys. Well, maybe. But it's worth a shot. Around here, any car that runs "good" is worth $1k; if it runs well and looks good, it's worth $2k. One of many reasons I temporarily switched to buying new... gheez you're from AL, so it won't be rusty... drive it to MI and get $2,500+...
Gas prices? Compared to the rest of the free wolrd, gas in America is free. Anyone who drives a 15mpg Explorer and the whines about gas prices is a weenie. I personally think the $87kkk for Iraq ought to be rolled into fuel taxes, but that's a different subject.
Good luck, let us know how it goes.
Oh yeah: I'll second the Terry accolades. We are not worthy...
....... This is really a personal thing, whatever floats your boat is the one you go with .. the window issue was addressed in the first 3,0/5,000 units (?) .. personally I like the SS and the values seem high ..
....... Gotcha ~ if it isn't the TLC, History, Discovery, HBO, Court TV, Choppers, APBA channel, then I miss it .. I just started watching Seinfeld in the last year or so .l.o.l.. hey, I'm weird.
..... Great show.! - it almost brought tears to my eyes when they built that bike for the Bronx Fire dept, all that effort, money, material and of course, all the great family squabbles .l.o.l..
Terry- thanks for the value on the VDub. I think he's gonna drive it into the ground (which, given the control arm problem he had with it a while back, isn't far off now.)
'Nother one for ya, this time for my aunt: '97 Park Ave (not an Ultra) White over dark blue leather (!) 65,000 miles in Buffalo, NY Body looks showroom, interior, while not perfect, is very presentable for the year. What says the Auto Value Oracle?
where they built the bike to look like a helicopter...cool...lotsa work.
And then had to call in Bubba Gump with a welding torch to cut off a seized cam bearing - taking a welding torch, in the hands of a guy who hacks together plate stell, to a $75,000 hand built bike. Arrgh!
Yeah, I kinda figured that. A 150k Ford diesel will hang around until the *right* buyer pops in with the cash, but a 150k Subaru will have people licking the handles to claim it.
Personally I like higher mileage vehicles, my Explorer is hitting its 50k OMG I gotta spend money on it faze. Our Chevy is at 149k and other than needing a flywheel replaced is an excellent truck.....its a 6.5L TD too.
I ain't looking for a new car to buy, we had some time to kill so drove through the Ford lot....hubby was with me so it was safe.
We are looking at flatbed trailers and 4-wheelers, but gotta sell the hayburners first.
My S.O. wants to trade this in on an '04 Infiniti G35 6MT coupe (Chicago north side):
2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport black exterior/gray cloth 34k miles hard and black soft tops, alloy wheels 5-speed manual transmission/4.0L 6-cylinder engine factory AM/FM cassette, sound bar, no CD NO a/c (supposedly common on Wranglers?!)
Problems: small but noticable burn hole in driver's seat, dent in rear bumper, one zipper in the soft top broken (warranty fix, hopefully). Otherwise body, tires and interior are fine, so condition is probably considered 'average'.
Though I don't know the payoff on the Jeep, I'm guessing he's upside-down; between that and the cost of insurance on a G35 for a 26 year-old, I really don't see this happening, but thought I'd ask anyway.......I'll keep you posted.
hi 30,000.00 bucks is a lot of money to spend on a used car with 6000 miles when that same 30,000.00 bucks will bye a brand new car with 0 miles on the odometer. unless you can get a great deal on that volvo and i mean the dealer would really have to sweeten the pot for you. example my friend just bought a 2004 nissan maxima for 28,000.00 brand new and no miles on the odometer. and the engine in the max is like close to 250 hp which would blow that volvo out of the water. just my opinion here. search around iam sure there are better deals to be found.
Sold my horse trailer today. Paid $1750 for it 2 years ago, put $800 into it in tires and a new axle. Sold it today for $2500.....total depreciation.......$50. Not too bad, wish cars were like that.
My horse trailer wasn't a new one either, it was a 1989 Circle J (caddy of the horse trailer world) 2-horse.
97 Corolla DX and 99 Sienna XLE by dillydill Sep 19, 2003 (11:58 am) Hello,
First car is
99 Toyota Sienna XLE Blue exterior cloth interior 75K miles Moonroof good condition -- ** Deep round things, ho-hum color and the miles are tall .. sooo, no Pac man hit's to the outside, service is 100%, interior looks 20k .. then trade side, in and around the high $10's, maybe the low low $11's if it's a baby doll ...
next car is
97 Toyota Corolla Blue exterior 135K miles Auto Power windows locks AC good condition -- ** DX with a power pack, right .? Ton's of miles, IF ~ it's a clean one, 4 new tires, looks & drives like 40k, service is all done from day 1 and it needs needs -0-, then trade side in and around that $1,5/$2,0ish zipcode, if it needs stuff, start deducting ...
.... Why didn't you leave the horse in the trailer when you sold it, then report it stolen .. I guess I have been watching the Soprano's too much .l.o.l...
.... Nice vehicle, low miles, they sure push that Nautica Blue Metallic don't they ?, yuk .. probably has $24ish in it, add a this (no CPO.?) and a that, then $25ish, so figure $28ish would be fair for both ....
Here is how I saw your car. "89 cadilac seville sts with around 130,000 miles. it is in very good condition with the usual blemishes and stuff that any almost 15 year old car would have"
A 15 year old car with 130K is not a 'very good condition car' especially when you add has the usual blemishes a 15 year old car would have.
Given the several dealer offers of $100 I saw it as maybe fair condition but not much more.
Most 89 GM cars have the typical fading paint (especially if left in the Sun in the South), some signs of rust (even in the South), etc making them at best a fair condition looking car.
I have to assume that the dealers saw something because if it really could be sold for $2000 on the street, a buy here pay here lot would have gone to $500ish for it at auction. The Caddy's move well if they are in good looking and good running condition at the distressed credit lots. Of course they would have gotton $4000 in payments over the course of a year off the car.
I still stand by "there is just no way to judge a 15 year old car with 130K without seeing it"
just to add there is no rust to speak of anywhere on the car. the only thing that comes to mind as far as what the car is in need of are as follows freon for ac, and there are some body scratches and dents here and there, but nothing major to speak of. the interior is perfect no rips or tears in the leather seats and the car was never smoked in either. also, this is one of the first sts sevilles to be manufactured, not that it should matter or not. iam putting a add in my local auto trader this week and will see what happens. iam going to ask 1500.00 that should be a good starting point.
Don't have an insurance on the horse so wouldn't have done me any good to leave her in there.
In 2 weeks we are going to replace the 18' car hauler trailer that was repoed. Will be nice to be able to pay cash for it and not owe the bank. Need it for our business, been nearly a year without a trailer, makes things tough.
I knew there had to be some major mechanical problem the dealers were seeing. You have an R12 freon ac system that doesn't work, no wonder they were only going $100.
The body is only in average to fair condition if it has several small dents and some scratches.
You might want to get an estimate to have the AC repaired, if it is cheap enough, fixing it will help you sell the car in a hurry.
People do not realize they always lose out typically 3 to 4 times what many repairs would have actually cost, both in value of the car at trade in or selling time, AND the extra time required to move the car if selling yourself.
FYI if the dents could be taken out by one of the paintless dent removal shops ($150 or so), detail out many of the scratches ($150 or so), and get the AC fixed for under ($300), with decent tires, a full recent service including main fluid replacements, you could try asking the $2900 and likely get something closer to that. Plus it may move a lot faster.
Look at the two possible ads. 1989 Seville STS, 130K, AC needs work, $1500 obo. vs. 1989 Seville STS, nice condition, 130K well maintained miles, serviced and ready to drive, $2900. Which one do you think will make the car more appealing?
it also has a transmission leak which is internal from the tranny itself and causes me to have to add about a quart of tranny fluid about every 1000 miles before it starts to slip. the mechanic told me that to fix it would mean to have to take the tranny apart to find the internal leak. since i told him i would be selling the car soon he says i would be better off just adding the tranny fluid when it needs it as opposed to going through the expense of trying to repair it. also, as he put it haveing to add new fluid to the tranny is actaully a benefet cuz you are constantley repleneshing the tranny with fresh fluid considering the cars age and milaege. i said in response ok if you say so.
"haveing to add new fluid to the tranny is actaully a benefet cuz you are constantley repleneshing the tranny with fresh fluid considering the cars age and milaege"
I'm sorry, no matter how you slice it, an internally leaking transmission, though new fluid has been added, it NOT a "benefet".
You're looking at a $2500-3000 transmission replacement - take the hunskie/benjamin/c-note and don't try to unload this thing on a consumer - you could get sued.
So...an empty freon A/C unit, a bad tranny and scratches/dings. This must be a new usage of the term "good condition" of which I was previously unaware. Seriously, this car would be more valuable in its ore state. Take the c-note and run.
..... Actually these aren't bad vehicles and have a great following, should see 150k+ properly serviced - the miles are almost low on this one, right color anywhere, leather ..
I have no idea what the Auto Value Oracle has to say, but I was thinkin' it's probably worth the high $4's, maybe even the low low $5's if it's a nice one on a trade .. great vehicle down Retail Rd, great ad, super clean action, $7,9 asking and grab the first $6,5/$7,5 El Casho buyer ...
but after posting all the VERY SERIOUS issues with your car, but starting with "it is in very good condition", it's as if you're asking us to help you defraud someone.
We don't do that here. Please don't sell this car to some unsuspecting schmo - that would be VERY wrong.
..... Great Description, Thanks ..! at least someone is paying attention around here ..
>> 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport black exterior/gray cloth 34k miles hard and black soft tops, alloy wheels 5-speed manual transmission/4.0L 6-cylinder engine factory AM/FM cassette, sound bar, no CD NO a/c ... >> **(supposedly common on Wranglers?!)<< ..
Common as a flat chested Dolly Parton .. at least this one has both roofs and the 6 banger, no cd, no auto, and a little interior/exterior song and dance, lookin' at the high $12's low $13's on a trade .. he has a small window of opportunity, once the Windy city starts getting windy, these really start to lose there funness ..
i suppose your right maybe i will just trade it in to the dealer and let them deal with it. besides if i was to purchase a used vehicle from a dealer do you think that they would disclose to me that the car i was considering purchasing had a leaky tranny or that the car was in need of major repair,or that the car was invovolved in a major wreck? i think not. and i have purchased used cars from dealers under that scenerio,so i would be returning the favor so to speak. steve
Obviously, the dealer's not asleep. He knows what he is looking for. This is beginning to sound like one of those incosiderate buyer things. It is OK to lie to the dealer because he's gonna lie to you ....
Most dealers I know FIX the OBVIOUS problems (i.e., non-working air conditioner, tranny leaks) BEFORE selling them as their interest is getting TOP DOLLAR for the vehicle.
Your post epitomizes why I don't buy from private sellers.
"do you think that they would disclose to me that the car i was considering purchasing had a leaky tranny or that the car was in need of major repair,or that the car was invovolved in a major wreck?"
It's called fraud - representing something as "good" when it's not. Dealers get sued and get sanctions from their state's attorney general when they do this. Consumers get sued, also, when they lie about the known status of a vehicle.
"i have purchased used cars from dealers under that scenerio,so i would be returning the favor so to speak"
You have every right and ability to have a car checked out by your personal mechanic - if you don't do that when buying ANY used car, just because someone at a dealer IS human and COULD miss something, it's on you.
Forget the "favor" rationalization. It doesn't fly. It's petty and it's just wrong... bottom feeder kind of stuff... end of story.
Look at it this way, it sounds like you got the old horse free (inheritance right?). So, no matter what you get now you're ahead of the game. Sell it or trade it, with full disclosure. You might be surprised. As was stated before, most anything that runs and looks even half decent is going to bring $500 to $1000.
For example, 3 yrs ago I sold my 14 year old Golf, 140K+, crumpled front fender, AC compressor seized and removed, clutch on the way out, handshaker w/no power assist steering (what a tank, lol!)... asked $700... got $600... cash. The engine ran decent, deep rubber, and the interior was almost pristine with a first rate detailing job. My buyer knew what he was getting and I slept easy that night. You just never know.
I would greatly appreciate your help in pricing my CR-V for private market sale. 2001 Honda CR-V EX AWD, 50000 Miles Dark Green ext. will less than average wear and tear. Deep Gray Interior, pristine except for a dog bitten seat belt clasp on the front passenger side. You can see the tooth marks on the plastic and the red button release. Standard equipment - PS, PB, PL, ABS, CD player, AM/FM Stereo, Vanity Mirrors. Full maintenance history available. (I even created my own web site to link to from the ads I am running: http://2001CRV4SALE.IWARP.com ) Thank You very much in advance. Cheers! --njexpress!
....... Let's see here .. 2wd, let's hope it's a 6 banger, the 4cyl will kill it, black in Dallas is no help and 21k isn't your best friend, better be clean, no Kmart experiments ..
Sooo, trade side your lookin' at the high $13's, might "could" see the low low $14's if you have tall friends in low places ...
The Liberty is in fact the standard V6/3.7 L auto config. The condition is excellent. Your number is actually slightly higher than my own assumptions. I was thinking $12-$13 k trade-in and $14-15k private party. Your estimate gives me reasonable range to start from on the vehicle. Thanks again!

I still stand by "there is just no way to judge a 15 year old car with 130K without seeing it"
In 2 weeks we are going to replace the 18' car hauler trailer that was repoed. Will be nice to be able to pay cash for it and not owe the bank. Need it for our business, been nearly a year without a trailer, makes things tough.
I'm sorry, no matter how you slice it, an internally leaking transmission, though new fluid has been added, it NOT a "benefet".
You're looking at a $2500-3000 transmission replacement - take the hunskie/benjamin/c-note and don't try to unload this thing on a consumer - you could get sued.
Terry.
We don't do that here. Please don't sell this car to some unsuspecting schmo - that would be VERY wrong.

It's a 2wd 2003 Jeep Liberty Sport automatic w/ black/black ext/int and 21k miles. It has the the B package (convenience pkg) and that's it.

Thank You very much in advance.
