Many, many thanks. Sorry -- Car does have third row seating package, rear air conditioning, towing (never used), running boards -- every option other than the rear air deflector. Metal and rubber are great. Yes, we're in Minnesota.
I was looking for the "simplicity" of a lease extension, but I see that's not do-able. I will mix it up with the TFS manager at the appropriate time per your suggestion.
As to the TFS interaction, one other idea -- will it make any difference whether I offer to finance the buyout through them? We could pay cash or finance/pay off early.
BTW, I presume offering to buy an extended warranty through the dealer wouldn't change your opinion on the dealer involvement.

But, thats a good idea about seeing what TFS will do as far as the finance aspect, you don't get any points from them for the warranty unless you can go direct, but it won't hurt to ask - they just might send you back to the dealer for that, just keep it separate ~ but straight in your mind ...

I just recently purchased 2 new cars in the last 6 mos, and, unlike the average american, plan on not requiring Terry's services until atleast 2008. To find a 99 with less than 100k is a flippin' miracle. Heck, I about fainted when I saw the miles on my 97......all of 41k. Of course I know *why* she got rid of it with those low of miles.

Here is what you need to do with the car.
1. Get it inspected for the big issues, hopefully by on ASC tech on the side for $50.
2. Clean it up.
3. Put an ad in the paper for $1000 obo and hope for the best.
The newer the tires, battery, fluids, etc, the easier it will be to sell and the more Ben Franklins you will likely see.
BTW post your location. There are certain areas of the country where a car like that has a certain niche market, still not worth much more than a few hundred dollars, but easier to sell.

Aka: it's not the miles, it's what they do to the value .. a clean 150k 97 Suburban, Land Cruiser will sell in a "nano second" if it's been cared for, they kinda reach a certain level then they kinda hover around it .. it's just that some imports take an a## whooping cuz' of the miles, VW's seem to get a pass when it comes to high miles, but a 150k 99 Accord will sell 10 times faster and get more peso's ... hmmm, and by the way, were did you see these vehicles ...?

This is certainly not a good car on a trade in. Too little car and too many mouths to feed until someone buys it at auction.
But I disagree a little with dk on the "ask $1k" scenario. If it's really as you say: Old but cared for, high miles but decent shape, no leaks, exhaust falling off, that sort of thing... 130k isn't that much for a good engine... I'd clean it up, put it in the paper for $2,400, and after a week or so, drop it down to $1,900. They'll be hitting on you like a bunch of horny monkeys.

Around here, any car that runs "good" is worth $1k; if it runs well and looks good, it's worth $2k. One of many reasons I temporarily switched to buying new... gheez you're from AL, so it won't be rusty... drive it to MI and get $2,500+...
Gas prices? Compared to the rest of the free wolrd, gas in America is free. Anyone who drives a 15mpg Explorer and the whines about gas prices is a weenie. I personally think the $87kkk for Iraq ought to be rolled into fuel taxes, but that's a different subject.

Personally I like higher mileage vehicles, my Explorer is hitting its 50k OMG I gotta spend money on it faze. Our Chevy is at 149k and other than needing a flywheel replaced is an excellent truck.....its a 6.5L TD too.
I ain't looking for a new car to buy, we had some time to kill so drove through the Ford lot....hubby was with me so it was safe.

NO a/c (supposedly common on Wranglers?!)
Problems: small but noticable burn hole in driver's seat, dent in rear bumper, one zipper in the soft top broken (warranty fix, hopefully). Otherwise body, tires and interior are fine, so condition is probably considered 'average'.
Though I don't know the payoff on the Jeep, I'm guessing he's upside-down; between that and the cost of insurance on a G35 for a 26 year-old, I really don't see this happening, but thought I'd ask anyway.......I'll keep you posted.
brand new and no miles on the odometer. and the engine in the max is like close to 250 hp which would blow that volvo out of the water. just my opinion here. search around iam sure there are better deals to be found.
BTW, I'll be in your neck of the woods in a couple weeks (staying on Michigan Ave.) Any recommendations for upscale-but-not-snobby places for dinner?

A 15 year old car with 130K is not a 'very good condition car' especially when you add has the usual blemishes a 15 year old car would have.
Given the several dealer offers of $100 I saw it as maybe fair condition but not much more.
Most 89 GM cars have the typical fading paint (especially if left in the Sun in the South), some signs of rust (even in the South), etc making them at best a fair condition looking car.
I have to assume that the dealers saw something because if it really could be sold for $2000 on the street, a buy here pay here lot would have gone to $500ish for it at auction. The Caddy's move well if they are in good looking and good running condition at the distressed credit lots. Of course they would have gotton $4000 in payments over the course of a year off the car.
I still stand by "there is just no way to judge a 15 year old car with 130K without seeing it"
In 2 weeks we are going to replace the 18' car hauler trailer that was repoed. Will be nice to be able to pay cash for it and not owe the bank. Need it for our business, been nearly a year without a trailer, makes things tough.
The body is only in average to fair condition if it has several small dents and some scratches.
You might want to get an estimate to have the AC repaired, if it is cheap enough, fixing it will help you sell the car in a hurry.
People do not realize they always lose out typically 3 to 4 times what many repairs would have actually cost, both in value of the car at trade in or selling time, AND the extra time required to move the car if selling yourself.
FYI if the dents could be taken out by one of the paintless dent removal shops ($150 or so), detail out many of the scratches ($150 or so), and get the AC fixed for under ($300), with decent tires, a full recent service including main fluid replacements, you could try asking the $2900 and likely get something closer to that. Plus it may move a lot faster.

I'm sorry, no matter how you slice it, an internally leaking transmission, though new fluid has been added, it NOT a "benefet".
You're looking at a $2500-3000 transmission replacement - take the hunskie/benjamin/c-note and don't try to unload this thing on a consumer - you could get sued.
I have no idea what the Auto Value Oracle has to say, but I was thinkin' it's probably worth the high $4's, maybe even the low low $5's if it's a nice one on a trade .. great vehicle down Retail Rd, great ad, super clean action, $7,9 asking and grab the first $6,5/$7,5 El Casho buyer ...

Common as a flat chested Dolly Parton .. at least this one has both roofs and the 6 banger, no cd, no auto, and a little interior/exterior song and dance, lookin' at the high $12's low $13's on a trade .. he has a small window of opportunity, once the Windy city starts getting windy, these really start to lose there funness ..

Obviously, the dealer's not asleep. He knows what he is looking for. This is beginning to sound like one of those incosiderate buyer things. It is OK to lie to the dealer because he's gonna lie to you ....
Most dealers I know FIX the OBVIOUS problems (i.e., non-working air conditioner, tranny leaks) BEFORE selling them as their interest is getting TOP DOLLAR for the vehicle.
Your post epitomizes why I don't buy from private sellers.
It's called fraud - representing something as "good" when it's not. Dealers get sued and get sanctions from their state's attorney general when they do this. Consumers get sued, also, when they lie about the known status of a vehicle.

You have every right and ability to have a car checked out by your personal mechanic - if you don't do that when buying ANY used car, just because someone at a dealer IS human and COULD miss something, it's on you.
It's a 2wd 2003 Jeep Liberty Sport automatic w/ black/black ext/int and 21k miles. It has the the B package (convenience pkg) and that's it.

Look at it this way, it sounds like you got the old horse free (inheritance right?). So, no matter what you get now you're ahead of the game. Sell it or trade it, with full disclosure. You might be surprised. As was stated before, most anything that runs and looks even half decent is going to bring $500 to $1000.
For example, 3 yrs ago I sold my 14 year old Golf, 140K+, crumpled front fender, AC compressor seized and removed, clutch on the way out, handshaker w/no power assist steering (what a tank, lol!)... asked $700... got $600... cash. The engine ran decent, deep rubber, and the interior was almost pristine with a first rate detailing job. My buyer knew what he was getting and I slept easy that night. You just never know.

The Liberty is in fact the standard V6/3.7 L auto config. The condition is excellent. Your number is actually slightly higher than my own assumptions. I was thinking $12-$13 k trade-in and $14-15k private party. Your estimate gives me reasonable range to start from on the vehicle. Thanks again!
