You've taken a beating here, and rightly so. We all have our lines of honesty to draw.

It's this kind of attitude that has contributed to the rise of the attourney in our society. If we all opperated with a personal code of ethics that held treating our fellow man with honesty, respect, and geniune caring, we wouldn't need laws to govern commerce and fraud.

I hope never to see you complain about a fraudulent dealer or how you got screwed on a car deal. We create our own reality, what comes around goes around, and a stitch in time is a penny earned.

Enough opining, now back to our regularly scheduled programming. Up next, Watch Terry wow the croud with a 12K trade in quote on a Daewoo Leganza.

I have a silver 2001 GLS Jetta with a manual transmission. I would like to sell to a dealer that will give cash back instead of putting the value of my car towards a new one (like CarMax or Fitzgerald Auto Mall--are there others?), but would appreciate anyone's estimate on how much they would likely offer. Here are the details:
    manual 5 speed
    monsoon stereo with CD
    moonroof
    alloy wheels
    21K miles
    ABS, side airbags
    Thanks!!!

hi, i am very suprised that you got that long a service out of your vwgolf. 14 years old and over 140,000 miles whats your secret? the reason i ask is cuz i read so many negative comments about golf-jettas on this site as well as other car sites. with so many people complaining about thier new jetta-golfs its nice to know that someone got that long out of thier golf.actually,i myself am considering a new jetta or golf cuz of the many standard saftey features and also the cost to insure either the jetta or golf is relatively cheap compared with other new vehicles.that is once i figure out what to do with the seville. probably just trade it in maybe i can get the tags and paperwork paid with the caddy but not the tax though.lol that would be wishful thinking.thanx steve

why are you selling this car with only 21k?
i can only assume that you like other jetta owners have experinced many problems with your car. and the 2001 jetta is one of the most problematic for that year. however, being that jettas to have a tendencey to hold their value very well you should do very well, whether its from carmax, or `anybody else for that matter. my girlfriend also had a 2001 jetta that she purchased new and was very troublesome to say the least.unfortunatley her car only had the 2-24 warranty, not the more lengthy warranty that the new vw cars come with now or otherwise she would have held onto it a little longer. steve

You will get at least a grand or two more by selling private party as opposed to a dealership.
  • zueslewiszueslewis Member Posts: 2,353
let me get this straight - you have an Acura, an Accord, a Mazda 6 and an older Cadillac?

Do you own all these or just "adjust" what you claim to own based on the topic you're posting in?
  • liz31liz31 Member Posts: 3
I haven't had any problems (luckily!) I'm selling because I moved by a metro station and don't want a car anymore...That's why I'd rather have cash than do a trade-in. Thanks for the encouraging comments!

hi liz, why are you selling this fairly new car with only 21k miles? i can only assume that you, like many other jetta owners have experienced many problems with your car. and the 2001 jetta was very problematic for that year as well.however, being that jettas do have a tendencey to hold their value very well, you should have no problem getting top dollar for the car. my girlfriend also had a 2001 jetta which she purchased new, and her car was very troublesome as well. unfortunatley, her car only had the 2-24 warranty or otherwise she would have held onto it a little longer. steve

Thanks Terry, but I was too late in asking your advice. My husband already went out and got it. He wanted either an S60 AWD or an XC70 and there was absolutely noreasoning with him. Since this was the best deal we had seen (most in DC area with 20-25k miles asking $30-31k; PA dealers asking $32k), he thought it was a good deal. He doesn't haggle at all.

Another question for you, if I may. My 2004 Sienna is to be in next week (believe it or not!)

Can you tell me what I should expect for my trade on my '97 Dodge Grand Caravan LE at a dealer in NE PA?

    96.5K miles
    3.8 L V-6
Color - light iris (purple gray)
    Cloth interior - mist gray
Condition - Interior a little better than average. Exterior Average - no rust, just minor dings. New windshield (rock damage)
    Dual temp control
    8-way power seat
    Sunscreen/solar glass
    AM/FM/CD
    Rear Heat and Air
    Traction Control
    Luggagge Rack
    Conventional Spare
4 new tires - about 4k miles on them

    TIA

    Terry,

I wasn't worried. . .you have things under control. :):)
Thanks for the info I really appreciate it.
I am trading the Corolla to a relative plus 10K for the Sienna. Seems to be a fair deal but now I know for sure.

    Thanks again.

I'm looking for real-world trade-in and private party values for the following:

1994 Acura Integra LS Sedan (5-speed manual)
    68,500 miles
Dark green exterior / tan cloth interior
    CD player and tweeter kit
    Original owner
    All service records
New Acura radiator and clutch master cylinder
Michelin X-One tires have 30K miles on them
A few dings/scratches, but otherwise good condition and clean
    No mechanical problems
Only problem is stuck power antenna (radio still works fine)

I was offered $3500 by a local dealer, but I'm thinking of selling it myself.
  • steven39steven39 Member Posts: 636
if you lived in the miami fla area you would have no problem selling that car. sounds like a good clean 1 owner car with good miles. good luck
  • cstowecstowe Member Posts: 101
    Reminder:
1996 Silver Acura TL 3.2, leather, CD, automatic AC, but NO SLIDER...11,500 miles here in New Orleans.

Well, I went to test drive the Acura this weekend. And it looks like a car with 11K miles should, new, except that it is seven years and two body styles old. I asked the dealer what the story was with the low miles and she said 'old lady, wealthy family, never drove it, blah, blah blah.' I did not ask if she was originally from the Pasadena area.

Bottom line is the car is pretty clean but it is not the "premium" edition which means no slider. Kind of a bummer because I am not DYING to drive a 1996 TL... but with only 11.5K miles I figure I can drive it for 3-4 years, put 60-70K on it, and still sell it for 5k easy.

They are asking 12,9 but I am thinking somewhere between 10.5/11.5...

I will get a carfax and take it on a long drive (by an Acura dealer) before I do anything.

    Comments?

    2003 Honda Accord EX
    4 cyl
    4 Door
    Leather (Black)
    Manual Transmission
    Silver Exterior
(All the regular EX-L stuff, 6 disk changer, dual climate control, ABS, EBD, tinted windows)

Clean, new car smell, no dings

    1650 miles

    Fort Worth, Texas 76180

What should I ask for this one. I'm not in any hurry to get rid of it though. I have a company vehicle that I will have for the next three years and don't need the extra vehicle.
  • steven39steven39 Member Posts: 636
bake, there is to many miles on that 2002
60,000 miles is alot for a 2 year old car, infact i would even go as far to say its excessive miles. i would suggest that you further reasearch your cars. i think its fairly safe to say that you can do much better than this deal as far as the milaege is concerned. 60,000 miles on a 2 year old car? was it used for a taxi?

Battlefield promotion for steve? Coup? Terry out of his Superman suit? Is it to late to bid on the Daewoo? :-)
  • zueslewiszueslewis Member Posts: 2,353
Battlefield promotions means the leaders already got shot and most of us ('cept for lurking Bill) are still here.

We REALLY don't need muddied up trade advice going on here.....

Bid away on the Daewoo - it's getting ready to get past $20K!
  • zueslewiszueslewis Member Posts: 2,353
again, I don't mean to pick on you, but Terry runs a real clean deal here and helps folks out in great fashion. A couple of us take up slack when he's at auction or on the golf course.

The advice you're giving is really unbased and unsolicited - give these folks (consumers who are posting here) a break so they don't get 2-3 conflicting opinions thrown at them - we like to do things simple...

    Please. :)

    Hi there! Two quick questions:
    1. Need to trade in my 99 Honda Passport SUV, EX 4D, 2WD; 41,000 miles; silver; grey leather interior; no CD player; sunroof; good condition; no collision or repaint, just a few parking lot kisses (great phrase, who came up with that?); Southern California. I owe about $7,900. If I tell the dealer how much I owe, does that information figure in to how much they're going to offer me on a trade-in? Do I need to disclose it or is it something they need to know anyway and will eventually get once the deal is done?

    2. And, you knew this was coming ... any idea of the realistic trade-in value for this particular vehicle? Edmunds has trade in at $11,853/dealer retail at $14,773; Blue Book has retail value at $15,780. Thanks so much for any help you can provide!
  • dbgindydbgindy Member Posts: 351
In seriousness zues is right. The one's who post about trade/private sale values are experienced trusted pros. If you do this for a living please list your bona fides if not please watch giving people advice as an amateur (gifted or not) that they may take as gospel.
This is not a slam at all on you, just trying to protect all the good work this forum does.

My landlord is looking at a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. It has the six-cylinder engine, alloy wheels, 4WD, power everything, cloth interior, a big black nose bar/grille guard on the front and 104,000 miles on the odometer.

The paint (that dark gold-gray color) looks good, as does the interior. The only real flaw I noticed on the inside is a worn spot on the cloth upholstery of the driver's seat. The used-car dealer down the street is asking $6,995...what would be a good offer? She has no trade-in. I don't want her to overpay...that way she won't be tempted to raise my rent! (This is in New Cumberland, Pa., just across the river from Harrisburg).

Also - does the nose bar/grille guard add anything to the vehicle's value? She would rather not have it. If taking it off will lower the price, she will ask the dealer to do so. Thanks!
  • danjk1danjk1 Member Posts: 1
Has AC, AM/FM/cassette, power sunroof, power windows/doorlocks, new brakes and new tires. Has 120k miles. Paint is reasonable, with a few minor scrapes, and a 4-inch crack on the back of the passenger side rear-view mirror housing. Silver color. Interior looks great. What do you think it's worth on trade-in?

    thanks,
    Dan

...... Sorry, didn't mean to miss ya .. when you get to be my age, you can't see as good and things don't work as well, that's why God made Viagra .l.o.l.

But anyway, it's not a Limited, right .? we have that darn meat clever going on here, miles are a little on the tall side, but in SCal you guys drive 40 miles for Yuppie coke .. color is good for the area, chromee's, slider, so we got some stuff .. trade side, if it's a real nice one, you should be seeing the mid to high $10's, could "maybe" see the low low low $11's cuz' of the "surfs up" area ..

Just below Malibu is a little town and it's on Retail Rd, make it glow in the dark, $13,9 in the paper and snatch $12,5/$13,5 from one of those USC cheer leaders ..

Good luck, let me know ..

    ...... What .. ? have you been sneakin' up to see Aka - 02 with 60k ....... ? Yikes.!

Get the Vin# and run a DMV, Carfax and the # through an Infiniti service computer .. sniff sniff, do I smell a Salvage title here ..? -- CLEAN 01's with 90k still see the $9's at the auctions ..... look close with a service Tech, then it's either a Buy ~ a no Buy ~ or a Goodbye ...... !

                          Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... Thats a very cute ad, you did a nice job .. the "asking" price is more than fair, miles don't help, color is not your friend, so with that price I know your not a blonde .. should see your price minus $300/$500 ..? maybe a pic of you on the hood would help .l.o.l... ?

......... Miles are ok, we got a handshaker going on, GLS with a monsoon .. depending on where you live and it's Clean, in and around the mid to high $10's, might-could-maybe, go to church alot, needs -0-, then see the low low $11's ....

........ I told you not to get that friggin' meat clever .l.o.l... trade side, they doing in and around that high $17, low low $18 figure ... I don't have to tell ya, this no-automatic is not going to bring the Dallas Cowboys over for dinner, the saviour here is: it's an 4dr EX, good color and loooow miles ..

See what the new ones are doing in the paper and you need to be below that figure .. I'm guessing here, maybe $20,900 in the paper and $19,9/$20,5 gets a new player for Houston ...

                  Let us all know ........!
