Make sure you get to go to Denali National Park, its beautiful!! I know with some of those cruises you only get to see the southern part of the state.........but missing out on Denali National Park is a real shame. I live about 50 miles from the park and go there several times a summer.

You should visit some car lots up here.....you will be shocked. My favorite is the older 4WDs, heck if it runs you can get anywhere from $3000 to $5000 for it no matter what it looks like. I sold my 88 F-150 2WD reg cab, 5-speed, 6-cyl, base model...didn't even have A/C for $2000 a couple months ago, oh, did I mention it had 184,000 miles on it. Hmmm, what would it have been worth in your neck of the woods. In the newspaper on any given day there is an 86 Subaru going for $1000 or more. Gotta love Alaska!!

An XJ-6 that looked like someone's beater car.
    Rust, dirty, cracked windshield.

    It was really sad looking.

Anyone have thoughts as to real world trade-in value (in texas) on a '95 740 i w/ 44k miles in excellent shape?

    Hello everyone,
I'm new here although I've been lurking for awhile. I'd like to ask a bit of an unusual question. Could you advise a ballpark figure for a trade or personal retail on a 2001 Honda Civic LX sedan, silver, automatic with aprox. 2,000 miles. I realize that on a new model information may be limited as far as actual trades being made & that this is probably not a good time to trade or sell a car so new. Thanks for any help.

Hmmm... if it's free of paintwork, Immaculate and in a Good color...

I think it ought to be worth about $21K.

    Terry?

    Hmm... 2001 Honda...

Well, a 2000 Like that is worth about $11K-12K...

    Methinks.. Hmm... $13K?

Trick is, that car has a retail value of about $1K back of original invoice (Since it seems that $500 over invoice or so is where new ones seem to sell). So then it's wholesale value is about $2K-3K back of THAT number...

    Hope this helps

......You didn't leave enough info.....So, I will just pretend ---- it's a light color ( texas )..hopefully champagne or white....the interior "look's" like a 2000 ...and the tires are new --- no dash stress..and no door dings or love bite's ... the miles are certainly right.....

You are looking in or around that $20,000 ish++ number..and, if it's -jam up - ..more towards the $22,000 figure....

    I hope this helps..

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.......That would be pretty much my guess....

That $13,000 number..it's a Honda ..maybe a little more on any given day....

    Terry.

I was wondering if you can give an approximate trade and retail value of a 98 Rodeo 38K auto.

    Thanks in advance!

P.S. I know this is not alot of info - best guess will be fine.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.....There is a big swing on these vehicles....So, I will just consider this to be a ..LS..with the leather...and a 4x4...

The miles a great, that will help a lot...and if the condition ..is, let's say great..no dings, dent's etc... you know the drill ---- you are in that $12,500/$13,000 ish figure....if it's a 2 wheel --- and not.. a Ls...you in that $8,000 zip code....

    Maybe this helps...

    Terry.

BrentwoodVolvo & Rroyce 10: Thanks for the input. The car's dark green w/ black interior - very good condition & new tires, brakes, battery, and that exorbitantly priced 40,000 mile service from the dealer. The prices you guys mentioned are almost exactly what several of the dealers have offered me, so I guess now I have my answer, even if it's not exactly the one I wanted to hear. Had sure hoped that this car would hold its value better - guess I'll go back to Lexus...
  • spessardspessard Member Posts: 5
Another question I forgot to aksk to Brentwood vulva and rroyce10: My '95 bmw has the comfort seats and premium sound & only 44k miles, and the trade-in values listed by edmunds, kelly, & nada range from abt $22,000 up to over $24,000. So is it reasonable to assume that a dealer can't justify paying more than the base trade-in price listed by the various info sources, and that I won't really get any extra $$ for the low miles and various options?

    Thanks again for your input.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
......Keep in mind....that little options ..as well as the big options, can increase the value....and miles -- always help..

A better way to describe this, would be......let's say, your vehicle has 68,000 miles...and no upgrades --- and a few dings and dents which are ..very apparent..and of course, tires and service is needed in 5,000 miles...I have to think, a dealer is going to be looking at the vehicle -in or around- that $17,000 figure and less....

So, in the long run....you get what you..--- Care for....

    I hope this helps....

    Terry & Bill:

I got another call from the Acura dealer. He has a black on black '99 RL with 31k miles that he wants me to look at. He says it's just about perfect. They are asking $31k. What would be a fair price? Around $29k? If it's as good as he says, I may have to jump on it, and take the hit trading my Explorer. (ouch) Assuming I let the dealer play the over allowance card, what would be a fair trade difference? I'm thinking $15-16k.
I guess I'll have to pull the toys out and sell or use them in the next vehicle.

    Thanks guys.

    Quentin

P.S. Anyone in Columbus Ohio need a nice clean '97 Explorer with a lot of toys? We're dealin'. :-)

    Terry and Bill,

With Chevy and Toyota doing joint ventures on some of their cars I'm wondering if it would be better for me to go with the Chevy twin. I'm specifically referring to the Matrix/Vibe. Since I keep my cars a long time (8 years) and accumulate high mileage (200,000) I don't think the resale value of Toyota would be worth much. What's your opinion(s).

I finally decided on a car. And I know this won't go over too well here, but I just ordered a Subaru WRX for delivery about 2 months from now.

I really wanted to try and stick with the used car market because of that damned depreciation, but I just couldn't. Once I test drove the WRX (completely at the will of a friend of mine who wanted to experience it but not be the front man to deal with the salespeople), I realized that every used car I was looking at just paled in comparison. I couldn't, in good conscience, settle on anything used for $400 a month when, for a little more money, I would be getting a vehicle that, in my opinion, is superior in every way.

Anyway, enough of that. Not like I really need to explain myself. The key here is that I now am going to try to sell my car myself. So, I've mentioned it before, but I don't expect you guys to remember with so many requests flying at you. Its a '99 626 LX-V6 automatic. That light metallic green kind of color with tan cloth interior. Its a VERY clean car. No dings or anything. Anyway, what do you think I should advertise it for and, ultimately, settle for on the private market?

    As alway, Thanks.

....... If I remember....You live in Columbus, and I was at that auction last month.....

But, anyway.....I would -start- at $28,000 and work from there....the vehicle has a ..tinge.. of higher miles -- not bad ...just a little more than average.....So, if I were you ....and you really like the vehicle ....that's where you should be starting...also -- you will have to renew my memory, on your trade-- I just got back from the Manheim about 8:00 ------------------------------------this way I can give you a accurate -difference- figure...and my head is still spinning....l......o......l......

You seem to really like those vehicle's ...and for what it's worth, so do I.......Buy it -- enjoy it..... spring has sprung.....and they are great cars....

    Good Luck.....

    Terry.
  • qwallsqwalls Member Posts: 406
Thanks. You are correct, I'm in Columbus. I wouldn't say I REALLY like them, but I do like them enough to buy one. I'm a big fan of Hondas, but I don't really like their styling anymore. The RLs seem to be a great value used, and they look good. They should also last a long time, and that's what I'm looking for. I test drove the '99 today, and I like the suspension a lot better than the '98 or '97 I drove. I REALLY like the BMW 740iL, but the maintenance costs would kill me...so would the purchase price unless I got a '95 or '96. :-) Thanks for the info.

Not at all. I'm listening. I like the looks of the RL better, but I thought about the GS300 quite a bit when I was initially trying to decide on a vehicle.

    .......Good question...

I just picked up 2001 Prizm LSI, for my nephew.....I wasn't going to pay the.. long dollar for a Corolla.....it's the same car ..that's built in the same factory..by the same people.....and golly gee --- and saving $1800 in the process..

After the next 4 years at Purdue..then another 2 years at NYU...... do you think, I will care how much this vehicle may be worth -- with 200,000 miles on it - how much more can it be worth...A $100/$200..?.......then, he can make all the decisions he wants..........

.......Hey, I'm on your side ...I like Subaru's--- Living in Fl. you just don't have the market...But, from what I read, that WRX is the new pitbull on the street... --- But, what an eye opener, here.... the customers love them, -- they last forever...great CSI --- and I drove a Limited for a couple weeks in the snow --- and I loved it...forget that X5 -- unless your ego is bigger than your ^*^* ..

Well anyway, you get the picture.......So, what about this Mazda 626 LX V6 .... Well if the miles are, let's say under 24,000 --- and of course it's clean ..nice, and no bad habits in the parking lots ... ---- I wouldn't be afraid, of putting in the paper for like a $12,900 figure --- ------------------------------------------------------------ Just some food for thought --- always try, to be at the lower end of the spectrum as far as pricing, when you advertise..... I watch, personal auto sections all the time --- and as a rule -- the guy that advertises the highest -- or that- "firm" stuff ...just doesn't work -- you will see that ad, 2 month's later ---- also, don't be afraid to spend a couple extra dollars for a -good- ad ...like a 4 liner with bold print -- sounds silly, but it does work......

    Good luck....

As you may be aware, I was/am looking at Subaru Foresters as I like this mini-SUV/tall wagon. Good versatility and utility. I feel that Subarus are right up their with Toyota/Honda for reliability, etc. But I also have a back up cars in case the price of the Subarus are out of my range. Thus my consideration of hatchbacks. I like the versatility/utility of these cars. Got it narrowed down to three: Mazda Protege 5, Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe, or Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. Grant the Subaru might be considered a compact station wagon but I'm looking at it as a hatchback. I like the looks of the Pontiac Vibe better than Toyota plus its the same car for all intents and purpose. Since I keep my cars 8 year/200,00 miles, I doubt the extra price of the Toyota will bring anymore come trade-in time? Then if I don't like any of these, I'll look at used cars. Boy, oh boy, three plans/strategies for cars. I must be anal-retentive or something. Strange, but the more $$$ I save for a car, the cheaper I become as I don't want to part with my $$$$ :)

    Thanks for the info. Terry.

The miles are high, though, at 36K (and going up by 500 a week). Still, though, the dealer would be looking at around $9K by the time my Sub comes in mid-June, so anything above that helps (although I owe WAY more on it).

*sigh* a car habit is such an expensive one.

I have 18k miles with load leveling and towing package, no sunroof, no heated seats. Color is black in very good condition. I am located in the SF Bay Area. What can I expect on a trade-in?

    Thanks in advance.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Well,

IMHO, the options help, while the color combo hurts. And Idont think youve done poorly with resale at all. If it was a 1995 LS400 we'd be looking at about $17,500 or so..

Besides, the 740 was much more fun to drive than the older LSs!

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    I'm with Terry.

Hit em at $28K..see where they go. But I wouldnt pay over $29,500 or so for it. And, deduct fromthat number what your trade is worth.

If he's hell bent on $31K but puts like $16K or so on your car, you then whip out your checkbook....

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Ordinarially I'd say to go for the Toyota unless the same Chevy was $1K or better cheaper to buy new. But in your case... I'd say to go with whatever the best deal is.

In other words...If chevy has a $1K rebate or something, buy the Chevy.

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Ahhh... WRX :))) Niiiiiice.

    I like it. A LOT.

As far as the Mazda goes.. word it like this (If it's true):

1999 Mazda 626LX. Beautiful Champagne Green metallic with LightBeige Interior. Meticulously maintained, Outstanding condition and virtually cannot be told from new. Equipped with a 5-Speed transmission, CD Stereo, Power Windows and Locks and Cruise. Just serviced. Bought a new car and it's time to say goodbye. Call Bill at 555-1234

    Bill's other mantra:

"It's not what you say but how you say it"

That's why my Ads ALWAYS worked!!!

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Of your choices I'd strongly lean towards the Subaru.

    The Vibe looks neatand all...

But a 200K mile Pointiac? Is that even possible?

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmmm...

The miles are not a help here I'm afraid.

But if it's nice it strikes me offhand at about $23-24K or so.

And thanks for the ad. Most of it is true (after I clean it), I'll use that (just a couple of tweaks, of course).

I don't work for Ricart, but that's where I got the idea. :-)

I went to the dealer today. I figured $15k difference was a good deal too, but they seriously lowballed me. Said the Explorer was worth 9-11k. If they had said $11.5 or $12, I wouldn't have been happy, but at least I'd know it was a valid figure. I offered them $14k + the truck, the Used car manager came back with $18.8k.
I said $14k was as high as I was willing to go, asked for my keys, and left. I would have thought $15k would have been a good deal, but the rear bumper and left rear door really needed to be painted. I took most of the toys out of thr Explorer, and will probably try to retail it myself, or shop it arouind a couple dealers. The salesman did say it was the cleanest trade-in he'd seen. He was using the Black Book, and showed me a figure of $10,850 for my truck. I asked him what the Black Book figure was for the '99 RL he was trying to sell me, and he said it wasn't relevant and tried to sell me a '98 for the $14k difference. I had hoped I'd found a good place to buy, but they played the same games as most other dealerships. The search continues. It's a good thing the RL wasn't perfect, or I might have gotten attached to it. :-)

Thanks again to you and Terry again for the info.

    Terry:

Sorry, I must have missed that part of the message the first time. It's a '97 Explorer XLT, 4WD, SOHC V6, 5sp automatic, no leather or roof, luggage rack, power everything (seats, windows, doors), 34.6k miles, CD Changer, Black exterior, gray interior, upgraded seats and center console with AC/Heat vents in the back seat, alloy wheels, new tires. I guess that's it.

    Thanks,

Hey, just got back from Florida on Thursday...again, sorry I couldn't hook up. I suspect I'll be going down to Melbourne in the future, though. Anyway, I wanted to run this by you: 1991 Volvo 740 non-turbo, automatic, sunroof, cloth, 127,000 miles; for sale by independent Volvo mechanic/dealer in Iowa City (two guesses which one :-)) Drove really nice, clean title. The hood's been repainted for reasons unknown to the mechanic/sales guy, but the repaint was done well with no other evidence of body work. Asking $4k. Was gonna offer him $3500, pending bank approval (at confiscatory interest, of course, and I'd hate to finance this car, but I see no alternative and it'd a 2 years, max, loan anyway, doubling up payments whenever possible.) Yes/no? It's either that or sink $600 into my Cavalier, something I'm not really willing to do. Input, thoughts, suggestions?
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
    Hmmm.....

$11K isnt outrageous for your trade.

    $9K is.

Still, even at $11K and from the sounds of it $28K is reasonable for you on the RL..

That still puts us $1,800 below where they were...

You were right to pass on the deal IMHO.

Bill- peoplefirst.com's minimum loan amount is $7,500. I don't need anywhere near that much. It wouldn't even work to refinance the Honda through there, as I don't owe that much on it, either. Not only that, but they don't offer the program I'd fall into in Iowa. I'd love to hear other suggestions...

........Quentin......This 97 sounds clean -- and of course, the miles will help a lot --- and since we are in Ohio, the color will probably add a few cents to it ...

At this time of the year .....If.. it's as clean as you think... we are lookin' at a $11,000 vehicle -- it might -- do a little more ...maybe by $200/300 ..... So, if I'm following the math correctly..you should be able to trade for a $17,000 ish difference ---- In my humble opinion ---- I think you guys can meet up ..in or around a $16,000 figure..Well let's see what happens...--- other than that -- I hope you and yours have a wonderful Easter....

    Terry.

PS --- By the way, have they changed the site again ---- or do I have do get new glasses -again- .....l.....o.....l......

PSPSPS--- How about a -- In the wrapper, 1998 GS300 with 26,698 miles ..and everything in the vehicle - except for a new owner --- for a $18,000 difference ----- Oooooooo, enticing isn't it.......

    Terry,

Thanks for the info. It sounds like my truck has lost $500-$1500 in the last month! :-( No more Fords for me. I don't think I'll be getting that RL because of the repainting that's needed, but that is good information to have for a future deal. We had a great Easter, my sister and her family came from Milwaukee,a nd we all had dinner together after church. I hope you and your had a great one too. Does this mean it's time for you to head back to Florida?

Yeah, they changed the site again. There may have been a 500 message limit, but I liked the old software a lot better.

The GS sounds very tempting. I seriously considered the new GS300 as my next car (used of course) when they first came out, but I like the looks of the '99 RL better, and it should be better in the snow if necessary. Now if you had snagged a black '99 RL, maybe we could have talked. :-) There are about 10 Acura dealers in Ohio, I think I'll call the rest of them to see what they have in their used car inventory. Of the two in Columbus, one never has more than 1-3 RLs. Currently, they have a '96 White premium for $21k with 56k miles. The other one always has 10-12 used RLS (mostly '98s) but all of them seem to have excessive paint damage. I even looked at a white '99 RL they had (even though I prefer dark colors), and the first thing that caught my eye was a paint chip down to bare metal that had started to rust over the left rear wheel well. There's no excuse for that...
