Is this horrible?? 2003 Ford Explorer XLS, V6, auto, red/gray, pwr windows/locks/mirrors, am/fm/cd, tow pkg, running boards, 11k miles.

They are saying $22k for theirs and $7500 for mine. Mine is a 1997 Ford Explorer Limited, V8/AWD, auto, power everything, sunroof, am/fm/cass/6-disc cd changer, alloys, purple/gray leather, good shape on the body and interior, 57k miles. However, the rear main seal is out, was quoted $1500 to fix it. Also, recent $2500 repair and paint done to it.

What do you think?? Nothing is set in stone yet, with the holiday and all I have a couple days to think it over.

I am a regular reader, and I only tend to post when I see something that is interesting, but I do appreciate the service you provide, as well as some great reading! Anyway, where do you hit this one?

1999 Mercedes E300DT, which is the turbo diesel model
    Black over Parchment (Tan) leather
    64,000 miles
These come pretty well loaded, but this has the dual auto climate, dual power memory seats, slider, it also has the 6 CD changer in the trunk.
The car is a trade in and has been a local car, so no salt, snow or winter.
    It is also Starmark certified.
Tires are excellent, and no paint work evident, and since it is certified, there shouldn't be any anyway.
It is at the local MB/BMW/Buick/GMC dealer here in Savannah, which tears me up because they are notoriously expensive and tend to sell the Germans in the same manner as the Buicks... but that's for another topic.

The dealer is asking $27,995, but what say the genius? Thank you for the great service you provide!

Think that Mathias suggestion is worth considering if you are going to spend $20K+ on an SUV. That could buy you a nice '00 to '01 4Runner with <40K miles, which you can buy anywhere in the US and have trucked in to Alaska for a *small* fee. A truck like this should last you through 200K+ miles. Forget the 100K warranty.

Good luck in your car purchase. And Happy New Year to you.

Thanks, dkuhajda, for your take. I was thinking a cheap vehicle would mean an easy cash sale, but I never thought about what you said about buy-here, pay-here buyers. Mine is a one-owner van with the service history, and the miles are low for the age.

Terry, what say you on my Windstar?: Post 16242 above.

Sure its a valid suggestion, just not sure I want to add debt just to get out from under a vehicle that needs some repairs. Nothing has been decided yet. At this point I'm at a loss on what to do. I'm hoping the right answer will smack me upside the head here eventually.

....... Well, we got no-sale green, the miles are semi tall and we got all the stuff ..... $17,500 .....? ... where did you go to get this price, Guatemala ...?

IF ~ it's clean, deep rubber, no kisses, no repaints, no Popeyes chicken, a straight vehicle .. then trade side, in and around that $25ish zipcode ....... $17,500 ...? .. are you sure you don't have a hearing deficit and he said $27,500 ..? .l.o.l...

Good luck and let me know ..!

                     Goooooo Miami ....!!!!!!!

........ Soooo, we have a 99 TD with 65k and it's black with tan guts (how long has he had this beauty-trade or auction buy?) ... no help with the color, the miles are tall, but we do have the Star Wars warranty ..

Dealer probably paid $21ish for it, "maybe" $22,0 on a push, add the warranty, add a this and that and it should be coming to the table at around $24,0 ... nice vehicles, but not a door buster, asking $28, that's nice .. all the money in the world would be $26/$26,5 on the retail side, there isn't any hordes of buyers rolling around the streets of Georgia looking for a hi mile black TD ...

Happy New year and let me know whats going on ......... :)

                      Gooooo Seminoles ....!

Not to bug you, but *IF* I decide to trade my Explorer, I'll know tomorrow for sure if I'm going to. Either that or I will have pulled the last bit of hair out of my head. Which is the better buy? (yes, I know, I know on the reliability thing)

2003 Explorer XLS, V6, auto, 4WD, pwr windows/locks/mirrors, red/gray, am/fm/cd, 11k miles. Its an ex-rental from Washington with an in service date of 6/5/03. Dealer asking $25k, but they said $22k OTD and they are offering $7500 for my Explorer.

                    -OR-

2002 Grand Cherokee Laredo, V8, auto, Quadradrive, blue/gray, sunroof, pwr goodies, am/fm/cd, 17k. Asking $25,9, but we are at $23,4 OTD and they are offering $7500 for mine.

Or should I just keep looking or not? Both seem high on their price and low on my trade, then again, it does need a rear main among other things and has had $2500 in paint work.

Thanks, I owe you 10 cases of beer!!!

I'm considering trading in my 2003 Infiniti G35 (not a smart thing to do, but midwest winter is rough with RWD). I'm in Indiana.

    2003 Infiniti G35 sedan
    Auto
    Silver ext, Willow int
    Leather
    Sunroof
    Bose Audio
21000 miles - no dings, scratches. Excellent condition overall.

I was offered $23K at a toyota dealership. A little low? Since the car is so new, there is not much trade in data availbe, but edmunds and bluebook both point to $24-25K (trade in).

I would appreciate any input. Thanks.

..... These are nice vehicles and I like em' lot's .. But, there is no such thing as Excellent, no matter what A*N*Y of the books say ~ or, your driving a G35 with 2,100 miles, not 21,000 miles ....

Right color for the area, we have a slider, leather and the Bozo sound ... If, we have deep sneakers, no kisses, no K-mart love taps and an interior that looks "hovered" in, then trade side you should be seeing in and around that $23ish figure .. so the Yota dealer is right on the money, give or take a few hundred ...... $24/$25 ..? .. not when they can go to the auction and buy 5/6/8kers for $26,0 ..

Good luck and let me know ...!

    ...... Thanks Terry (RE: msg #16201) by sweetv12 Dec 31, 2003 (3:25 am)
... >>Navigator; left coast; '01; midrow captains chairs; 4X4; 17' chrms; Alpine 6CD; wht/tan; 38K miles; nav system; heat & a/c seats; rear a/c; parking distance control; no roof; has r/brds; has 3rd row seating; 50% attach rate on rubber; very clean; never off road.
    ==========================

Ok I got it now .. Left coaster, Quads, back up beep beep, white in color with tan guts, you say it's clean with 38k and no slider, but we have the 3rd rider, nav with the step children, it's a 4x4, hot and cold running air and it's a street vehicle ... trade side, in and around the high $23's, low low $24's depending on the dealer ... if you waddle down Retail Rd with a super detail and a ultra nice ad, $27,9 "asking" and say goodbye when the first Trojan hands you $26,0/$27,0 ..

Nobody's dream machine by timadams Dec 31, 2003 (8:38 am)
I'm going to sell my 95 Ford Windstar van. It's a 95.5 LX with the 3.8 liter engine.

    Alloy wheels
    Roof rack
    Rear heat and A/C
    Rear radio controls
    Two-tone paint
    Power everything, including seats
    Heated power mirrors
    AM/FM/Cassette
    cruise/tilt
    Load leveling
Captains chairs (two chairs in the middle row)
    Center console
Keyless entry (both key fob and number pad on door)
    Privacy glass
    85,000 miles, one owner
Dark green exterior with green and gray cloth inside

The interior is in good condition, and the exterior is in average to good condition. There is no rust or damage, but the paint has kind of peeled off of the plastic bumpers in two spots. All of the paint on the metal is good, but the bumpers look kind of crappy.

What is it worth to sell to a used car dealer? What is it worth to sell privately on my own?

    Thanks.

***I wait with baited breath (gotta stop eating those minnows) ----- ....l.o.l.....

    ==================

Great description, thanks .. the biggest hurdle with these is that 3.8 V6, but the miles are low for the year and it's got lot's of stuff .. even though there is probably 500,000 of these running around the streets with 100k++ and never seen a hiccup, the bad reputation just kills em' (or so the dealer will tell you) .. trade side, in and around the $2/$2,5ish zipcode ..

Me personally, it would get a little makeover going for me, a little paint, proper service, sneakers or whatever for Retail Rd .. then a excellent ad, super detail, service records glued to the windshield, $4,900 *asking* and when the first $3,5/$4,5 was thrown at me, it would be Hisstoreee .....

The simple fact of life is that there are few people looking for a $4,000 vehicle that actually have the cash in hand (or in the bank) to plop down on the vehicle.

I've sold cars like that myself by getting my contact at the high risk signature loan place to look at the car first, get a loan amount on file and them send anyone interested that does not have but $1000 in hand the name and number to apply for the loan on the vehicle. The loan sharks like the extra business, and it can make for a quicker sale.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
........ Ok we have a 00 GLX in black, we have a handshaker and we got some miles ... right now there is just Kabillions of these for sale .. now it's their vehicles and they can ask anything they want, now and in 6 months when they still have them .l.o.l... but the point is, that's a tuff limited market and the books show big money for them and they just ain't getting it ...

Trade side on this one, should be in and around the high $8's ... if you go down Retail Rd, $10,9 "asking" and say "See Ya" at the first $9,9/$10,5, there a dime a dozen right now ...

                         sorry ;{

Thanks, Terry. The van was detailed in the summer and has hardly been driven since. I washed the outside, cleaned the windows inside and out and cleaned up the carpet a bit. Not a full detailing, but it looks pretty good. I'll get the bumper paint fixed on the cheap and it should be good to go.

I'm thinking about what you are for price: $4,500 to $4,900 asking price (all the money), and hope to get $4k. I'm going to take it to a couple of used car lots to see what they will offer me wholesale; I'll let you know what they tell me.

dkuhajda, thanks again. And thanks for the suggestion to line up a lender first. I'd never think about borrowing for a $4k car, so that aspect never crossed my mind. Who are these lenders? I don't even know where to look.

Wow - this thread moves fast. I think my request for pricing on a 02 Tahoe got lost in the volume -so I will query again:

2002 Chevy Tahoe LT: spitfire red (maroon); 4-wheel drive; 14,900 miles; 5.3l engine; tow pkg; locking rear diff; leather/heated/memory seats; third row seats; liftgate (not barn doors); running boards; side air bags etc. etc. etc. It has all the options except the sun roof. It will come with a skid plate (not installed), car bra, new Catch-all extreme floor mats, mud guards(installed) and a bug defector (installed).

The truck is in perfect condition. It is literally cleaner than the day I drove it off the dealership's lot. No bumps, scrapes or bruises and no rock chips. The truck did have the alignment adjusted when new and has had the driver's mirror replaced because it would not auto-dim. Already had rear differential flushed and serviced at 10k and did extensive break-in period with oil changes at 750mi, 1500mi and 3000mi (and every 3000 since).

What is this thing worth in a private sale in Cheyenne, Wyoming (90 miles north of Denver)? I've listed it at 29,900 for one month and have had little interest.

    Thanks!

Happy New Year Terry. Got a live one for you.

2000 Acura 3.5 RL coming off lease. Right at 20,000 miles. Red with tan cows. Has everything except nav system. Deep grooves in sneakers. Immaculate condition. Located in St. Charles, MO.

What's it worth trade/retail? Thanks in advance!

....... Right color, right miles, it's a 4x4 LT, no slider, bun warmers, super service, 3rd seat, no baby kisses, 5.3, a little tow package action ~ sounds like a nice one ...

Trade side, maybe the $26ish range .. you gotta kinda remember your "asking" super retail ..

Your asking waaay too much, a good ad should get at least 2 calls a week, even the tire kickers call that much .l.o.l.. you need to be "asking" $28,9 and if you don't get any action in 5/7 days, then you need to drop it $27,9 and if that dog don't hunt in 6/7 days, then you need to drop it even more ..

Just like some of the others have said: rebates, 0% is your competition .. most folks arent smart enough to figure out that if you finance $27,000 with 4.5% for 60 months thats it's a better deal then financing $37,000 with 0% ... plus I'm thinking there isn't much of a buying population there(?) ..

I was in Sturgis for a few days in August, there sure ain't much between the towns .l.o.l.. but then again I'm a city boy ... you don't pay taxes in the difference in Wyoming do you and what was the dealer offerering you on trade ..? ........ :)

My spuuurs ~ go jingle jangle jingle ..

Just look in the yellow pages under loans. Especially those that say signature loans, whatever you need loans, etc. If you have a bank or credit union you do regular business with, talk to the loan manager there as well.

I would really be suprised in this winter market if you can get a whole lot of response at $4,900 on a 95, but you can always relist at a lower amount in a couple of weeks. The used lots around here are FULL and many times over the last month decent older cars are simply not moving even at auction (unless they are at give away prices). If you get lucky or unlucky, please follow up here.

Well, it's time now to start getting ready to move to downtown Chicago from out here in the burbs, and that means the A4 has to go in favor of something with cheaper operating costs and something that will keep me from crying everytime it gets dinged by a parallel parker.

It's a 2002 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro with the 5-speed manual. Less than 18,000 miles and in Dolphin Gray with the Platinum interior. Very nice, with a detail nobody will know it wasn't built yesterday. 6 disc in dash CD with tape, heated front and rear seats, moonroof, 16" wheels with full size spare, auto dimming front and side mirrors, homelink, and all the standard features you can shake a stick at :) Plenty of warranty left (4 yr/50,000 miles), and plenty of tread on the tires. I have all service records, which don't amount to much since there haven't been any problems.

I've found a few on Autotrader with advertised prices in the low to mid twenties. But those are dealers...

How about a trade value and a private party value?

    Thanks!

...... All do respect Dk, but December and most of January is tumbleweed time from the Keys to Chicago, the lowest prices of the year roll through the auctions and it's been that way for 20 years and sometimes, some vehicles actually go up from there .. the difference being is, most folks Do have $4,0/$6,0/$8,000 and they use that money at this time of the year to buy the cheaper vehicles ... you need to get out more ..... :^)

If you're 'dead set' on the Explorer, do check out the incentives on new ones first....in Chicago, they're offering $1000 'bonus cash' in addition to the current $4000 off or 0% financing AND $1000 loyalty for current Explorer owners. Your offers in AK may (and prolly do) vary.

    Hi Terry,

Could you take a stab at this one? In Phoenix at a dealer lot--02 Q45 17k miles premium pkg--all options incl navi lt gold and off white interior. Dealer has it marked at $44,900--said he would take $38,900 or certify with a 100k warranty at $39,400--I offered 35k no trade--he had zero in my offer--am I crazy for thinking 35k for an 02 Q?

......... Oooh, this is a rare one and a favorite of - yours truly .. red, tan hydes, no miles, Nav Smav, get a giant compass and super glue it to the dash .. I will buy everyone I can get my froggy fingers on ...

You should know the drill by now: just like Prom Night, it's gotta be clean, lookin' and feeling like an 03 ... trade side, in and around the ultra high $18's, low $19's .. Are you buying or selling ..? ... down Retail Rd, *asking $23,9 and the first "real money" deal goes home at $22,5/$23,5 ...

Let me know, or my posse in Crestwood will have to visit you ...

The only Explorer I'm *dead set* on is my own. I figure I have 10 payments to go and I already have the dang thing. Plus its my favorite color and I really like driving it.

We were all approved for a loan on a used 03 Explorer, but I talked to the finance lady this morning and told her I decided to pass.

I fully plan on avoiding car lots, will just visit repair shops more often now.

    ... >>Dealer has it marked at $44,900 === .. What ....? .. $44,900..? .. great price if it was 03 Cabriolet CLK 320 with 5,000 miles ..

--said he would take $38,900 or certify with a 100k warranty at $39,400--

         >>I offered 35k no trade--he had zero in my offer--am I crazy for thinking 35k for an 02 Q<<..

Crazy.? .. probably not, maybe a little too close to the liquid plumber though ... he probably has $35ish in it (premium package, hellooo.!) .. sounds like he is working hard at $38,9 WITH the "certified" stuff, not $39,4 ...

    Terry,
Thanks, you were pretty much almost right on the money. Story is kinda funny....
Went to a dealer in a small town accross a bridge from me. Wanted to trade the van for a tbird and they had the one I wanted. He offered $8k, which is the kbb for a non conversion van, but he couldn't figure the value of a conversion, so he called a friend in the biz. Based on his friend's estimate he offered $7k for my van, but would knock $1k off the sticker on the tbird. I left before he even took down my name.
Then went to the Ford dealer in my town-new year's eve 5:30pm. He looked real close at the van and took it for a ride, came back and offered me $11k, I complained based on your estimate, and he knocked $2500 off the sticker for the tbird. My wife really wanted the tbird so I made the deal--I would have liked to return the next business day to continue negotiation, but I wanted my wife to be happy.
Terry, Thanks so much for giving me some ammunition. Happy New Year!

    Hey Terry.

Well I finally was forced to sell my MiataI asked you about a few days ago. It was crystal blue with tan leather, 6-speed, ABS, 24,500 miles with newish (~6k miles) high performance summer rubber.

You said I should expect to get about $13,500 or so and Edmunds and KBB agreed with you. I sold it tonight ***sad*** to Carmax in Kansas City for $14,500.

So I thought I'd let you know how it went.....now I go back on the prowl and await the time I can afford a 2002 Blazing Yellow Mica SE Miata! Mwaa haaa haaa!

Thanks for your help and Happy Holidays!

Yeooow, God bless, you did great on that one .. $14,5 .? .. there not doing close to that in your area auctions - what am I saying.? there not doing that anywhere .. throw them the title and grab that check before the Mgr finds out he has a bullet in his head from the Christmas party, he just doesn't realize it yet ....

Could be worse, you could of got $13 or $13,5 and then you would be reeeally whining .l.o.l...

But anyway, it's a 02 A4 Quattro, right color, slider, bun warmers, 16"s, all the stuff and the miles are low, but, (you knew that *but* had to be in there somewhere) we have a handshaker, not a good thing for most of the buyers ... trade side, in and around the low to mid $19's depending on the dealer ~ down Retail Rd, $22,9 *asking* and grab that first $21,5/$22,5 ...

                    Let me know ..!

But the amount of reconditioning they will need to do will be minimal. I had service records...but they didn't want them b/c it had my info on it. The appraiser was actually surprised to hear how much I expected to get out of it. When he came in he had the appraisal in his hands and he asked me how much I was expecting. I said I would love to get $15k but I doubt it will be anywhere near that much. He then said "well its not $15 but we're pretty close," and he showed me the print out with $14,500. I tried real hard not to get too excited and simply said "OK".

All in all it was well worth nearly 3 hour trip to KC for me. I got $1000 more for my car (apparantly they have buy quotas just like other dealers have sell quotas), and the people were all extremly friendly. I told my wife that it was like going car shopping at Applebees. I think that from now on I'll be going to Carmax when its time to get a new car rather than go through the tedious trade-in process. Dealers around here make it seem as though they are exaserbated by having to take in a trade in....very annoying.

One of the "local" Mazda dealers had a crystal blue 02 Ls just like mine but with only 2000 miles on the odo. They said that they'd had it 6 months and it hasn't sold. I looked it up on their website, thier price....$21,700!!! Yowzah! No wonder they didn't want mine. LOL

    ..... Hey, I'm happy for you ..

It happens, sometimes a dealer will make a mistake or they get super busy, phones ringing, fight with g/f, who knows .. I know - I have done it myself, yakking on the phone, cell phone in the other ear, watching a fax come up, looking at the computer screen, then quote the wrong number on a car ~ I'm still stinging from a Bimmer I bought in March and took a $2,500 hit on .. Hey, my face my fault ..!

The important thing is, you did just *fine* .. the dealer that has the 6 month old Miata, he just better suck it up and go on ... Or, go to Home Depot and grab 300lbs of potting soil and make a planter out of it .l.o.l..

                           Terry ;^}
  • thelthel Member Posts: 767
The appraiser did say they were really busy at the time. In fact, he said he doesn't usually work with customers...he stays in back and does the appraisals and they have someone else who acts as middleman- (I guess).

What was equally impressive was the atmosphere of the store. Everyone was very friendly and seemed genuinely glad to see me in their store. I told my wife it felt like buying a car at Applebees. They even had a large play area with one of those ball cage thingys that kepy my 3 year old happy while we were there.

As sad and depressing it was to have to "dump" my beloved Miata, the Carmax store did an excellent job of taking the edge off.

I think the appraiser was afraid I would be expecting $20k or something really unrealistic for my car. Thanks to you and other on this board, he really didn't have to reassure me about their offer...I already knew it was "all the money"!

There are three franchise dealers, the big three, with a total of around 400 new and used cars total all three lots. With 7 Buy-Here-Pay-Here lots with around 200 cars per lot. The biggest franchise dealer is about the same size as the smallest buy-here-pay-here lot in this hick-a-billy town.

Add the fact that the people with the money just do not come in here (buy-here lot), well you know sometimes we forget what the real world is like.

As to the Windstar, with it looking good, we would get $3900 for it plus the up-the-rear interest for 18 months. Heck the 98's around here with 90K are only bringing $5900. But we also have a bit of a captive market, unable to get a loan at under 29% interest.

    leather,
    6 CD/6 speaker audio,
    running boards,
    fog lights,
    roof rack,
    homelink,
    keyless entry,
    privacy glass,
    dual air,
    fender flares,
    cargo cover,
    alloy wheels,
    cargo net and full carpet.
It has a 1.5K miles, in Metro Atlanta GA area.
Looking for a trade or CARMAX figure.

    Hi Terry,

I am considering downsizing my Subaru and I would like to get an idea what to expect for a trade-in. The values I found on different websites ranged from close to 8000 to over 10000 - quite a spread!

Anyway, I have a 2001 Subaru Forester L, manual transmission, blue, grey interior, with approximately 75,000 miles. It has power locks and windows, tilt steering, dual air bags, and the optional cargo cover. Just the standard AM/FM/cassette stereo system it came with. Most of the miles are highway miles (about 60,000 of the total). No major scratches or dents, fairly clean on the inside, new windshield, tires still in good shape. No accidents, and the catalytic converter was replaced about 10,000 miles ago. Runs well, oil was changed every 3000 - 3500 miles (have all documents), and all major maintenance was also performed. I live in the Denver, CO area.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

...... You work in the Indy area, right.? .. if so, you "could" make it to the Super Bowl ..

Yeah, the Colts could make it. I am not holding my breath however.

    ...... 3rd seat ..? .. and no slider, right ..?

No-sale green, 2WD, based on what your telling me it's pretty much a base with the leather package, probably had MSRP of $37ish .. right now it has no miles, can't say what a CarSmack store might put in it .. trade side, in and around the $29/$30ish figure, the miles save this one ...

I am in Indy and I fear it will be a tough road to hoe as long as all roads to the Super Bowl now go through NE for them....

...... 01 Suby L, handshaker, no-sale blue, we have oodles of miles and you live in the land of the Bronco's .. You "could" go to the Super Bowl .l.o.l..

Your getting no help from the miles and certainly no help from the handshaker, but still good vehicles and sell well in your area .. trade side, in and around the $9's depending on the dealer ..

...... Denver is going to be hard to beat .. but, the monkey could fall off today .. kinda like last night when the Ravens (I hate that team.l.o.l.) lost their streak with the Titans last night, great game though ...

I would not say it is a base model. It has the 3rd seat, I believe they all do. The only things that are missing would be the sunroof, rear spoiler, woodgrain for the dash, rear audio controls and video package.

......... I figured it without the slider .. the 3rd seat can be a "delete" at order time, but I figured it in .... is the MSRP about right ..?
