Red, DX, coupe, 105K, 5 sp., A/C, aftermarket CD head unit, 105K. Complete maintenance records, water pump and timing belt replaced at 90K. Tires have 20-30K miles left on them. Brakes are at 35% both front and rear. Above average cosmetic shape, for an 8-year-old car.
Well Indianapolis just rolled over the Broncos. If they continue to play like that they might very well be headed to the Super Bowl. Manning/Harrison are a treat to watch.
..... Ooooh, we got some miles going on here .. has to have ALL the service, super history, no paint by numbers, no experiments with switch blades or KFC in the interior .. 4matics are fine, as long as Quasi Moto didn't have it for a driver ..
Trade side, in and around that $25 figure, "maybe" $26, maybe .. down the secret path to the little road by the big Cypress tree, is a street called Retail Rd .. super detail, looking and driving like 25k, $29,9 Asking* and say bye bye at the first $28,5/$29,5 .... the miles aren't Quasi's friend here ......
In post 16070, I had asked Terry about a RAV4 I was selling in Phoenix.
Terry's take was "........ Miles are low, it's a 2wd not a biggie in your area, L pack, right color, a little am leather, eh' ... trade side, high $11's low low low $12's ... down Retail Rd, $14,9 "asking" and cut it from the herd at the first $13,5/$14,5 ... Terry.
I'm here to report that the maestro hit it dead-on, not that I'm surprised in the least. Detailed it, put in a good 5-line ad in the local rag asking 14,9...had a few calls, ended up selling it for 14,5 in 4 days. Thank you sir!
02 Tahoe LS 2WD Light Pewter with grey cloth bench liftgate (no 3rd row) 5.3 engine 3.73 rear axle raised letter tires (that look good to me) no other options 18k miles no wrecks, no paint, no chips, no rattles 23 months old and still smells new
I asked about this car a few months ago but didn't pull the trigger. Need a January '04 trade-in number. Looks like they're offering me $22.5k. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the report on my Audi. I put it in Autotrader Friday night, and had two inquiries this past weekend. I'm guessing it will sell quickly, but now I just need the weather to cooperate so I can get it cleaned up and looking nice when the prospective buyers come to look in person!
....... >>I just need the weather to cooperate so I can get it cleaned up and looking nice when the prospective buyers come to look in person!<<..
Thats a biggie .. the hand buys what the eye see's and if the eye doesn't see it, well you get the picture ..
I have a niece that wanted to sell her 01 VW bug GLX, nice little car, miles were low, good color, so she runs it through the El' Cheapo car wash, smears it all up and forgets to get the dog hair out (along with candy wrappers, pen marks, beach sand, one piazza box, a dark squishy material in the passenger side carpet and lets not forget those little tampon wrappers) then doesn't understand why she had 6 calls, showed it 5 times in 3 wks and it hasn't sold it yet .l.o.l..
3 weeks after that, she Finally gets it detailed professionally, looks great, keeps it in her neighbors nice clean garage for $25 a week and I have her rent a car at Thrifty for $99 a week .. it sells in 3 days, 2nd guy out and all I have heard for over 6 months is : Ya know, I didn't have to spend that Xtra money, it would have sold anyway ....... Yeah right, don't you have an appointment to get your hair dyed, again.? .l.o.l..
hehehe, thanks for the giggle at 2 am. I agree on the looks, I would have to spend some bucks to get my Explorer looking good again. Its awesome on the outside, but the inside looks like Al Capone had a gangster fight. It was that way when I got it, dealer's detail shop didn't clean it up, and I haven't bothered to do much more than vaccum it.
Found pictures of the prev owner and her kids under the back seat, rosary beads under the cup holders, and well, you get the picture.
...... Aaah, the famous Rosary beads .. between those and the 1,849 St. Christopher medals and the 1,730 dash statues I have found, that I was thinkin' about opening my own ministry (I was an alter boy for 2 years ya know) ..........
This was a first for me to find, wouldn't have found them if the darn driver's side headlight hadn't shorted out, had to tear apart the driver message center. Usually I just find money in used cars, among other things, have found some pretty icky stuff before.
Thankfully my kids don't trash a vehicle, they are very good. Nothing irritates me more than stickers on windows/doors/seats and my kids know I'll string 'em up if they even *think* about doing that to my car. They also know that if they spill food/drink in mama's car they might as well get out and walk.
I'm trying to figure out what the trade-in value for my '96 Nissan Maxima GXE should be. It's maroon with gray cloth interior. It has 114k miles and has been mostly driven in New England. I'm being offered $2k.
The body is in a good shape. The bumper is pretty scratched up, but otherwise, it only has a few minor scratches here and there. I had some body work done on the side a few years ago, but no frame damage.
The interior is in great condition. Other than some dirt on the floor, it almost looks new. I recently had my tires rotated - two are a couple of thousand miles from needing to be replaced and the other two are in great condition.
There is a whiney sound from the engine. I'm not sure completely what it is, but I think it might be the A/C compressor (the A/C still works, but may be on its last leg).
Options: - Cloth seats - ABS - Power driver's seat
..... ASAP ...? .. hey I'm Very busy returning all my Britney Spears wedding gifts ..
Ok slick, it's a 02, great color anywhere, 2wd, LS, cloth, 5.3, (no 3rd seat.?).. low miles ...... $22,5 ....? ... Whoa, what can I say ~ "be there", like right now .. that's ALL the "Jingle in the Jungle" ..
Quit reading this, you should be doing your paper work by now .. $22,5 ~ w o w.!
....... After reading your post you kinda "blacked me out" ..l.o.l.
Miles are kinda ok for the year, it's a base GXE, needs 2 sneakers, we have funny noises, the outside has been rolling around with the WWF .. what's it worth.? .. sounds like the dealer is stepping up to me, I would just blow and go with the $2grand ...... ;-)
....... It's the base DX, it's a coupe, miles arent bad for the year, go that handshaker stuff Not going for us ..
As long as you don't have all that hinky starlights, wacky wheels, pumps up and down stuff you should be ok, plus cold breeze .. so if we don't have any repaints, no I took the car to the beach and the tide caught it stuff going on .. then trade side, in and around the mid to maybe the high $2's ...
Vehicles like these sell in a "nano second" on the Left Coast, especially in your SD area .. me personally, I would get a super detail, a wonderful 5 liner Ad in the biggest paper in the area, *ask* $4,900 and I would bet it's gone for $3,9/$4,500 before the play-offs this weekend ...
Need help with this one: 2002 Mazda Protege5, base with 6-CD changer as the only option, handshaker (I know, no help there), 62k miles (I know, I know), silver, in NJ. It's my commuter car with a lot of highway miles. Few rock chips in the front but other than that, pretty clean with all the service records. A local Mazda dealer pegged it at $5,400 on a trade-in...what's a fair trade-in and retail?
You want to tell Terry color, transmission, and where you are (city/state, not ZIP code). The location really matters for your car (diff. btw. 4x4 and RWD varies a lot from North to South).
Thanks. I've been trying to move it for $4,700 for the last 3 weeks. I'm glad to see my first price wasn't out of line. I've come off a couple of hundred since then, and I have two calls on it I need to return later this morning.
And, no, I haven't done any crazy customizing to it. I figure it's the perfect blank canvas for an F-n-F fan to go nuts. True, it doesn't have a VTEC, but it's light (without all the power options), and be easily customized. Of course, the last thing I need to do is encourage another street racer in San Diego, where street racing is already an epidemic.
jratcliffe - thank for that help! Ill delete old post and now new post with updated info!!

After a few folks from Iowa or Idaho move out there and they sit on their porches with shotguns, that will end that .l.o.l..
Anyway, try to keep the ego parked at the door .. the worst enemy a seller has, is usually themselves, this is gonna be a vehicle that someone will be paying cash for .. so if they have $3,900 or whatever, grab it ...
...... Not much of a description here .. it's a limited, it's black (no slider.?) and we got 21k in Raleigh ...
IF ~ it's clean, no kisses, no battles at Wal-mart, no paintwork, no I let my neighbors kid paint my interior, deep rubber, auto .. then trade side, in and around the mid to high $14's .. if it needs stuff, start deducting ..
Advice appreciated. I have a dark red 2002 base Chevy Prizm, 26000 miles, with manual transmission, power locks/windows, cruise and CD (standard equipment?). I bought it used a year ago from a local private seller; had it checked by a good mechanic and have all records. Great condition inside and out. I am in the Twin Cities, Minnesota.
I might have to sell it in the spring, "inherit" wife's Accord, and get her a minivan. What can I expect from a dealer? Should I sell privately, and, if so, what should the asking price be?
(I know all the things going against me... manual, Prizm, small, FWD, non-SUV).
(I know I should wait until Spring with this question, but Terry et al are so helpful, and I got tired of lurking).
........ Lurkers are very welcome here .. (except for that little stint I did in Joliet, but we won't talk about that, I was framed) .....
But anyway, so you want to talk about your 02 Corolla, oop's, er, I mean your 02 Chevy Prizm .. miles are fine, good color and we have the power pack, gotta be clean and have deep round things -- nothing is going against you, except that friggin' handshaker, but it will sell, these are really nice little vehicles ...
Trade side, "forget about it", you won't have any problems selling this one down Retail RD .. a "superfluous" 5 liner Ad, a wonderful detail, all the records on the front seat, *asking* $8,5/$8,9 and snatch the first $7,5/$8,0 ..... or, get $6/$6,5 from the dealer on a trade ... (also, these are todays prices, in 2/3 months.?)
Whatever you do, don't tell Mathias, he will be knocking at your door ...
I'm wondering about my 2003 Honda Accord. It's the V6 6MT coupe. Nighthawk Black Pearl, around 6000 miles. And I live in Iowa as well. What can I expect trade in vs. sold privately.
you selfless help, prompt responses and occasionally disturbing wit are very, very much appreciated by this self-confessed lurker.
Asking 8.5k$ for my Prizm in a private party sale does not sound nearly as bad as I expected. I think I will wait until spring; demand may be higher then, we don't need a van just yet, and I cannot even wash the Prizm in this weather (what, only 5F below? I am not complaning).
As for the handshaker - I know now how it kills resale value; did not when I bought it. As most folks here know, a car like a Prizm/Corolla (light, with a small 4-cyl engine) is considerably more responsive and maybe safer to drive with a manual. I hope *some* potential buyers will appreciate this, too...
Keep up the excellent - no, make it amazing - work, and have a great 2004!
My 84 year old father passed away recently and we may wish to sell his car. The car is in southern New Hampshire / Boston North.
1990 Mer-Benz 560 SEL with 65,000 miles. Gray exterior and gray leather interior. Second owners, purchased 6 years ago from local Benz dealer (for around $20K, I believe) who sold it originally and maintained it. We have service records since my dad bought it; putting all of 2 or 3 K on it per year, and always garaged.
This thing is one big, smooth tank in very nice condition with no known peoblems. I believe it was MB's top-of-the-line when new.
Any idea on a fair price? We expect several friends may be interested and will probably do a private sale. But want to set a price that is neither "all the money", nor a "giveway". Since we'll probably sell to an acquaintance, we'd just want a figure that's fair for all concerned.
if you had waited a couple of days to buy it. But anyway, I would like to unload my 2003 Jetta GL, silver w/ black cloth. 1.8 turbo gas engine. pw pl cruise, Hand -shaker, 21,000 miles, in the land of Mike Vick. no dings ,no freedom fry invasions,no scratches, all services, tires rotated and balanced 3-4 times. Car in very good shape, clean , however no slider , but has alloy wheels, in dash and 6 disc changer. I gotta feeling the trade in # is gonna be depressing but give it to me any way along with a reasonable starting price to put in the 5- liner in the paper. thanks, dweller
I guess my patience paid off - I was able to sell the Tahoe I wrote about earlier in this thread. It took about 6 weeks of advertising in various papers, but this weekend I received two offers at 29k. According to all the feedback I have received, I think I likely got a good sale price. On the other hand, the thing was in perfect condition and only had 15k. Lesson learned: DO NOT buy a $37k SUV with all the bells and whistles and then try to sell it one year later during the winter. OUCH!!
Dardson1 - I've enjoyed all your posts on the Tahoe/Yukon board. Good luck with selling your Tahoe!
Wanted to get a trade-in value for 2000 Dodge Neon ES (automatic, A/C, AM/FM Cassette, manual door locks and windows). It has about 32,000 miles on it. I owe about $4,300 on the loan. Do you think I can get at least enough on a trade to pay this back so it's a wash?
Terry can you tell I've been in houston too long. Wanted to check in and see what my sled is worth. Here are the specifics.
03' RWD FX35 Black with Brick interior 12600 miles, No Accidents, body work or paint. It has the tech package and is loaded. Nav, roof, 20" wheel about 50% on the tires, DVD video, Laser Cruise, keyless go, The whole enchillada. Thinking about getting a Jag or stepping up to the 45. Could you give me trade and retail. This is garaged in H-town but may e-bay it if I get serious.
This site is the best entertainment I get most days. It has been better lately—Terry, are you off your meds again?
Here is the find at a Toyota dealer: 2002 Tundra extended cab limited, 4x4, no-sale green, tan leather, front buckets (driver’s ps), 18k, v-8, auto, TRD, and power everything else. I don’t know if it has traction or stability control, but still trying to find out. Good round things and spotless interior. Exterior looks to have avoided misfortune at Kmart parking events, but at -15 degrees, that is not where I spent much time. Not certified. Located in the Minneapolis area. What do you suppose they should have in it, and what is fair “retail” for such a thing?
Looking into your crystal ball, what do you see happening to the import extended cab used truck market with Toyota’s entry into the market with their double cab and Nissan’s new full sized truck, the Titan? Or more to the point, do you see prices on the existing extended cab Toyotas softening after Nissan’s move to the market and Toyota’s own larger cab competing? (ya, ya, I know; if you could tell future you would buy a lottery ticket-but just one. But what is your opinion?)
Many thanks. You are providing a great service, and look to be having fun in the process.
You'd be correct. :-) Oh, and Townsend is only on the fringes of Nowhere, MA; it's still too easy to get to Boston or Worcester from Townsend. You need to get out to Athol, Orange or Hubbardston to be truly in the middle of Nowhere, MA. Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled topic...
Location? Midwest? 2000 Neons w/~55K, are doing $5500-$5900 at RETAIL with some warranty. Simply subtract around $2000 from that amount for trade-in depending on a very honest appraisal of condition. Add a little bit, couple of hundred, for your low miles. $4K trade side is in the ballpark if really, really nice condition. Can we stress the really, really, really, nice condition.
You will be so much better off retailing it out yourself. Get together all the service records showing maintenance per the owners manual. If the tires are less than 40% of new tread replace them with a decent set of name brands. Give it a good detail, bring all the maintenance up to date. Nice 5 liner add, and then ask the $5900. Your miles are going to save you. First offer near/over $5K sends it packing.
THANKS very much for the ASAP reply. I've set aside tomorrow to do this deal. Based on your response I'm wondering if I missed something. I'll know tomorrow. Thanks again. Dardson1
After weighing all the numbers we've decided to trade the Explorer in. We are picking up a 2004 Mazda Tribute LX-V6 tomorrow, unless I get those dang cold feet again.
The GMC/Buick/Kia/Mazda/Pontiac/Mercedes dealership where I used to work made me a nice deal and my salesman is of course my best friend of several years.
Sorry, Jolie, but from where I sit, that's not bloody likely. You need a used Toyota Land Cruiser. Really. One of the older ones with the straight six, preferably. Either that, for freakin' move, at least to Anchorage! :-)
Actually, as long as I have a warranty I'm ok, you'd be surprised at what I can put up with. If my Explorer had a warranty I'd be doing fine and it wouldn't be leaving tomorrow.
Oh and we are moving to near Anchorage in 2 years. (just waiting for some things to clear up)

The GMC/Buick/Kia/Mazda/Pontiac/Mercedes dealership where I used to work made me a nice deal and my salesman is of course my best friend of several years.
I hope this is the end of our bad car karma.
