If it's a "real" SE (RD187 - I see lot's of "converted" LX/EX's from the midwest .l.o.l.) ... the color is good anywhere, if the leather shows real nice, there isn't a bunch of dent dogs on the side, no re-paints, no hit and runs, service is 125% and it looks and drives like 50k .. then trade side, depending on the dealer you should be in and around the mid to high $8's, "could" maybe "might" see $9,0 if you aren't the Columbus shooter and you been going to church on a regular basis ... $9,800.? .. that's more of a retail figure, dealers in your area are paying that for clean 60kers.
Let me know how it goes ...
Terry.
Either way, no harm no foul whether it was sold at that price or not.
Going this afternoon to look at a Black 2000 Passat GLX 4Motion with all the options (automatic, changer, monsoon etc) also in philly. Asking right now $14,400 and the price is negotiable.
Is that fair?
AS
$5200 is almost retail for that puppy. We see $6000 retail for those large high mileage Buicks, Indiana Hickabilly area.
Most of the franchise dealers will auction/wholesale that one out simply due to the miles and secondly due to the age. Maybe if it glows in the dark and drives like 25K you will get lucky. I'm thinking trade side close to what we have paid at auction for same model this winter, high mileage car, $4400 give or take.
Car is located in Metro Atlanta
2002 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL automatic
gold exterior/tan interior
35,000 miles
leather seats
BOSE audio w/ 6-disc changer
alloy wheels
power seats
new tires
Here are the known problems:
Car was in an accident and the front core support was damaged. You can kind of tell the front bumper and hood do not line up like they are supposed to
both passenger doors were reskinned
there is a football sized dent/scratch on the driver's rear quarter panel
miscellaneous dings and stratches in the doors and rear bumper
Also, the car is a higher trim level (SL is highest 4 cylinder offered) but does NOT have a sunroof.
Overall it's a decent looking car but I don't think it's worth what she paid. What do you think this puppy is worth?
It's a 135k 3.8L V6 w/ supercharger .. the 3.8's have a wonderful history of reliability, when you add the supercharger part the dealers might get a little weak knee'd .. if it's a nice one, knee deep in rubber, seats look hovered in, just a nice clean Park Ave .. then trade side, in and around the $3's, probably the low to mid $3's ..
Good luck and let me know what happens ....!
Terry
It's a SLT, miles are sitting around 38k, it's the right color and it's a 4wd, plus we have the Bozo sound and the boards .. if it hasn't visited any Wal-mart implosions, no hacksaws to the interior .. then trade side in and around the $19's, it's going to need some big round things ....
Terry.
The miles are kinda tall for the year, great color for the area, it's an SL, Bozo sound, new sneakers and no slider .. gheez without really seeing it I'm kinda guessing, figure in and around the $10's .. I'm only paying the $12's for the super clean SL's with 18/22k, now the V6 SE's are doing some serious money, in and around the the tall $17's with all the stuff and miles in the 14/18k range .... the miles and all the remodeling is not your friend here.
Terry.
Have an '02 explorer eddie. love the vehicle, but have a vibration around 65 mph. dealer put on michy all terrains, as a test, and said that would cure it(i didn't get to drive it). i figure about $700 to replace the gy's i have now.
have 4.6(v-8), 3rd seat(free now), aux air, towing package(never towed, but have hitch mount bike rack). wedgewood (med) blue. have 27k miles, dealer service every 3k, couple of small scratches on tailgate. drivers seat(leather) has some creases and floor mat has a wear mark from my heal.
found an '04 same equipment plus sunroof and safety curtain.
trying to decide, should i trade now (am putting on miles at a higher rate than i would like, i.e. vacation this summer will be another 2.5-3k trip) or wait 6 months(after the trip), or take the chance that new tires will make my only annoyance all better? wwtd?
It's a 00 EX V6, it has the right color and no chicken pieces, let's not forget it has no miles for the year, plus you say it's clean .. these seem to be doing some pretty strong money lately, maybe it's the redesign, or maybe the cheap rates, or both, but folks Do like this body style .. trade side, in and around the mid to high $12's, might "could" "maybe" see $13,0 if everything is going your way and it's as clean as you say it is ...
Me personally, this is material for Retail Rd .. super detail, excellent 5 liner ad, the service records hanging from the tail pipe .. $15,900 *asking* and wave goodbye at the first $14,5/$15,5, this one won't last long ....
Drop me a note to let me know ...
Terry.
Traded the 03 suburban today,no great deal but seemed good for the area. Shopped it to 3 dealers and they were all close, I got 27k. Paid 37k for a suburban Lt, it listed for 47,9k and has all the nice features like, moon roof, XM, Buckets all around 4x4,17 inch rims and tires, ect.
Thanks for your input Brad
After much aggrevation with the local VW dealers that had passats I liked, I gave up on them. Absolutely they rode nicely, but given their past reliability, I was not about to bend over backwards to get one.
In any case, I test drove a 2001 Taurus SEL (all the options including rear spoiler) with 36000 miles. Here are the specs:
2001 Taurus SEL
Auto
Black
36000
Leather
Traction Control
ABS
Mach Sound System with CD Changer
Bucket Seats (floor shifter not the column one)
Rear Spoiler
Quality Checked Pre-Owned Warranty (no clue what that means.)
The two dealers are asking $11,900 and $10,600. They are identical to one another with very similar miles. Both are deep in the rubber, no major scratches or anything. In the Philly metro area. What is a fair price to offer?
Thanks for your help (again)!
AS
Still, as used cars they are a lot of car for the money!
I actually considered a Taurus when we got rid of my 97 Explorer, but I really need an SUV......as has been proven several times over the past 2 weeks.
Taurus is definatly a lot of car for the money, especially on the used market.
In this case, though, the $11k is more a price for a 20k-30k 2003. A 35k 2001? What will Terry say..?
Anyway, they aren't so bad anymore, reliability-wise. Since '98, the trannies have been OK --zues says so, of blessed memory :-). And the engines have always been OK, except the head gaskets on many 3.8s. The first generation had all kinds of stupid $1 parts fail in the HVAC system that were a bear to get to, and heater core failures, same deal... but I *think* the newer ones are better.
And no, I'm not betting my own money on any of this. But I wouldn't necessarily say no to a nice '99 wagon for cheap...

Anyone with some info on him?
The Sandman :-)
In any case, I am assuming that these dealers are artificially increasing the price to leave them room to negotiate down; Its been the case with every ford that I have purchased.
On a different note, does the car being quality checked get me any special finance rate (like VW CPO gets 1.9% financing right now)? What type of warranty comes with this Quality Checked thing?
Thanks for the help.
AS
I think I did well on the flip side. I got an CPO 03 Corvette with 4k mi, 50th Anniversary, 6-spd convert for 43,5
Thanks for you input!
Also, if you have had the Exploder for awhile and your just getting a vibration, then obviously this sounds like a tire problem and/or balance problems ... most folks have the front end checked, but especially in large SUV's, the first place to check is the "rear tires", one can be misaligned or out of balance, or both .. I have seen a lot of folks drop big $$ on new tires when it "could" end up being vibration from one under-inflated or out-of-balance *rear tire ...
Terry.
Terry.
The "boys in the band" are pretty much on this one .. $11,900 .? .. that price is a little on the hefty side, "depending" on the warranty $10,6 is more in line for 36k ..
There is bunches of Taurus's out there and they can make an Excellent buy if you take your time and look around, now if a dealer has had it in his inventory for 2/3 months that might be one to avoid because he has November money in it ..
Terry.
You got ALL the peso's on that Bimmer .l.o.l. Left Coasters, Amazing.!
Thanks for the info ..

What say you ...?
Terry.
My uncle gets a vehicle leased for him by a bank that he does some work for. It is not the standard practice so they don't have a policy for getting rid of it. They are going to trade it in on a new vehicle for him. He got it last November (15 months ago) and he has 41K miles on it since it acts as his office and he is all over town and the surrounding area. He takes really good care of it and since I am in the market for something new (to me) he is going to see what they would sell it to me for instead of trading it in.
It is a 2003 (could be an 02, I am not sure) Yukon Denali (not the XL) with all the goodies...but no dvd system, nav or slider....41k miles, that pewter/silver/beige color with grey guts, AWD, heated capt chairs etc.
I have relocated from the land of Mardi Gras to the land of Okies...as in Tulsa. Dont ask.
What would a "deal" price be? I am really looking for a sedan but for the right deal I would go with the Denali...a pretty sweet ride.
Can you hit me with the 2003 and the 2002 price?
Thanks.
As expected, I will be sure to report back the
predictions and the results soon! Thanks!

I did the deal today on the car that was being advertised for $11,995. The car did not have the rear spoiler on it, or side airbags(like the car for $10,600 had on it-which turned out to be a firm price non-negotiable).
I put in an offer for $10,000 with a spoiler added in, and they came back with $10,300 as the best they could do. This seemed more then fair to me (I was not actually expecting them to do $10k), so I took it. Total OTD came to $11,100. I am picking the car up on friday so that they can complete the 35000 mile service for me (free of charge). It will take a week to 10 days for the wing to come in, so I will pick up the car and bring it back. The dealer also said that when I bring it back, they will give me one of their cars to use for the day (very happy about that).
I just wanted to say thanks to Terry, and everyone else who made this a relatively painless experience.
Just out of curiosity, how did i do?
AS
btw, ol'zeus sent me an email by mistake, so i know who it is.
I have not really seen any taurus's sold for even close to their wholesale price. Why is this the case?
Thanks,
AS

I going to trade in my 2000 Xterra when I purchase a new one within the month and I'm wondering what a fair trade-in offer would be. It is dark green, in good mechanical repair with new tires and has the following:
92,000 mi
4sp automatic
power windows/door locks
keyless entry
tow pkg
tilt steering
cruise
Custom Pioneer stereo CD/casette
Thanks

I hit it at $69.9K...dealer countered at $73.9K (originally listed at $86K)...I will take it at $71K if he is serious about moving the unit...Premium Starmarked too...i'll keep u posted...thanks...

Re: your msg #17357 ('02 CL55)...... Right color for someone, miles are low, no Espresso (thank goodness) .. probably worth in and around the $69/$71ish range come trade side .. might "could" maybe do $71/$73ish at Riverside or Bay .. down Retail Rd, $79,9 is a good asking price, hard to put a firm number on a CL, it will probably do the stronger side of the scale in SCal I would think ....
What say you ...?

As usual, your vibrant and informative posts on Edmunds are only appreciated by those who counts. Keep up the good work.

What is he looking at as far as a private party vs. trade-in number? Dealer has been hitting him at around $10k, but he's looking at Retail Road to minimize his negative equity. Thanks!
