i'm betting the explorer gets traded for the Focus, and then come September when the snow starts falling, your back into another Explorer or some other 4x4...

I wish you the best of luck, but really, you have got to stop thinking about trading any of your cars, etc... STAY AWAY FROM CAR LOTS, STAY AWAY FROM CAR LOTS, STAY AWAY FROM CAR LOTS.... I don't know how we can stress this enough. I can't see any reason why you need to trade the Explorer????

    KBB shows it at...

It was just a thought. I like my Explorer too much, so it'll stay put. Butch is right, I'd be miserable come snowtime. Trading the Explorer isn't worth the little bit of gas savings and debt reduction. I enjoy being able to go off road, out to the logging sites, camping, biking, and all that fun stuff......kinda hard to do in a Focus. Thanks for the reality check, just need to be smacked once in a while.

Guess the only thing I'll be buying this year is a 5 yr/100k ESC for the Explorer.

Just have to work on paying it and the Dodge off (the dodge has no worries about being traded, hubby loves his truck, I would be traded first)

With any luck I'll be able to track down the rest of the parts for the Chevy today and get it up and going this weekend (yeah right). Then it goes to the lemon lot to be sold.........quickly I hope.

    taterheart,

Make sure that you drive both of these z3's. Every 4 cylinder bmw that I have driven made me want to have holes in the floorboards so that I could help push (like Fred Flintstone). I suspect that you will like the 6 cylinder much better- the 3.0 is really a great motor. Also, you might want to check into the z4 (if you like them at all) because the 2.5 has $3500 dealer cash and the 3.0 ,I believe, has $4500 dealer cash, but I do realize that I'm talking new cars and much more money.

But, as Terry says, "drive what you like".

    Good luck,
    Mark
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
If the Z4 2.5 has $3500 cash off, I imagine if you're light on the option list (skip the auto climate, power top and seats), a new one can be had for right around that $30k that '01 Z3 3.0. Sounds like a no-brainer to me.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
the 2.5 is a six cyl. also (the 199 was a four)

My Bad. Sorry, as stickguy pointed out, I was thinking of the 1.9L 4 banger. The 2.3 is actually a 2.5L I6.

Perhaps the info about the z4 will still be useful.

You need to get an appraiser that specializes in diminished value. Don't take a penny less than what he determines the DV to be, if they won't, drag out the lawyers, and go for blood. You shouldn't have to take any loss whatsoever since this wasn't your fault.

Ha, if that was the case Terry would still be here, at my house and I would be a lot lower on my cigar, alcohol, and golf ball inventory. Not to mention my hands would be sore from rubbing his feet. That Chevy ain't left the spot it landed when we pushed it off the trailer a month ago.

Since I have had the opportunity to spend the past week in bed flat on my back, I have had the rare opportunity to watch a little cable for a change.

On Sunday, I watched some show on Alaskan fishing and one on logging. I have to confess that I did not appreciate how cold and trecherous that the roads up in Alaska are. And the distances. WOW!
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Yup, its fun up here. My husband is a logger, so he travels a lot of back roads. We were out on the logging road on Sunday, made it 9 of the 18 miles and then hit water that hubby didn't want to chance crossing.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
After this week the new phrase is:

STAY AWAY FROM THE BICYCLE SHOP!!!

Holy cow, we will have spent about $1200 there this month. I bought a mountain bike for my son 2 weeks ago, one for me today, will get one for hubby on Friday, my daughter has my son's old mountain bike. Then we need a bike rack for the Explorer, will get that Friday too.

I don't know what I was thinking about trading down to a Focus, yeah right. I had 2 weeks worth of groceries and a mountain bike in my Explorer today and couldn't have fit anything else in there.

    Terry-
I'm hoping you could give me an idea of trade-in value. A local used car-only dealer offered me 6k on trade for 03 Taurus SES w/20k, Taurus price was 11k. My guess is they were bumping up my trade, and bumping up the Taurus in kind. Around here, 10,9 to 12,9 for 03 non-duratec SES w/ 15k-30k mi. Wondering how much the defects noted below will hurt the value, should I take whatever I can get?

    Audi Details:
    96 Audi A4 Quattro V6 5-speed Automatic (tiptronic not avail in 96)
    87k miles
Red ext., Black int. "pleather" (option between cloth and leather)
    Sunroof
    Heated seats (work), ski bag
    Never wrecked/no accidents
    New tires in Aug 03
New front and rear brakes in 03
New timing belt, serpentine belt, water pump 02
All interior electronics + A/C work
Lightly keyed length of passenger door, 1" z-shaped scratch
Driver's seat has 6" crack in vinyl, cloth underneath intact, otherwise interior perfect
Slight seepage from rear diff and tranny rear seal
Except for key & scratch, body & paint excellent shape, would show/auction well
    Located Rochester NY

    Thanks,

I have a hard time buying the cheapo ones at the store, they never feel right, always out of adjustment or something wrong with them.

My kids both have quality bikes, my son has a Trek and my daughter a Specialized (it was my son's bike). I have a Specialized, my husband will either get a Trek or a Specialized. Quality bikes last longer and are much more pleasant to ride. Kinda like quality cars.

We sold our horse (hayburner)........only reason we can afford it right now. :-)

    .. ** 1999 New Jetta trade value by jkmb May 17, 2004 (4:17 pm)
    1999 New Jetta GLS
    4cyl
    Auto
    Leather
    moon roof
    front side air bags
    56000 miles
good condition (no accidents, non-smoker, leather is perfect. paint is good. 1 or 2 dings in the door.

Trading to a dealer who will have to wholesale it out. What price should I get?

Also, should I try VW dealers. Would they buy my car even if I am not buying from them?

          =====================================

Miles are low for the year, it's a GLS 4 banger, we have the hole in the roof, we have the auto and we have some hydes ..

IF ~ the rubber is deep and the service is from yesterday - then trade side, in and around the mid to tall $6's, if it's super clean and ultra nice and it needs -0-, then you "might" see the low low low low low $7's, maybe ...... you can always try shopping it around and see .. lets be honest, do you think a *small* Buick/Honda/Dodge/Mitsu store will know what to do this ..?

                         Neither ....!

If it's a nice one, no french fry invasions and it "stands tall" - then trade side, in and around the $27ish figure, depending on the dealer and WHAT part of the country you "might" "maybe" see them bounce towards the $28 figure .......

I'm also looking for a Toyota Tacoma for my son. What would the wholesale/retail price be for the following:
    .
1999 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner Xtra cab
avg. miles, let's say about 60K
4 cyl, 2WD, auto (all prerunners are 2WD & auto)
only must have option is a/c here in Florida as prerunners come nicely equipped.
let's say fair-good condition overall, don't mind getting wheel/tires or fixing small cosmetic blemishes.
    Orlando Florida area
    .
I almost bought one for about $11500 at a dealer here in Orlando, vehicle was as described above, except in excellent overall condition. I kinda wish I bought it.
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
The place to buy top quality bikes inexpemsively are the police auctions. Here in Chicago, you can pick up a $1200 high quality road bike for $200-250.

What generally happens is the bike gets stolen. An insurance claim is files and paid. When the cops recover the bike, either they cannot identify the owner and the owner does not want it back as they will have to reimburse the insurance company.

Mark, thanks for the information about the Z4's. I didn't know about the dealer incentives, where did you find out about them?Edmunds doesn't show anything about them. Now if I can only get used to the Z4 look... I still might go for the Z3 :)

    Hi Terry,

    Any information about this?

I'm looking at two BMW Z3's with the CPO warranty at a BMW dealer. What are the Retail and Trade-in values?

    1. 2001 BMW Z3 3.0 - 5spd, Premium package, Power top, BMW CD Radio, Cosmos Black / Black Leather, 18,800 miles. Dealer is asking $30K

    2. 2000 BMW Z3 2.3 - 5spd, Harmon-Kardon sound, BMW CD Radio, Titanium Silver / Black leather, 32,000 miles. Dealer is asking $23K

By the way, both cars appear to be in excellent shape (interior and exterior)

    Thanks in advance...

    Tater,

I learned about the incentives on the Z4 from Car_man -he's the moderator on the Lease Questions-Ask Here board here on Edmunds. Browse back a few pages and he gave all the info. There are incentives on most bmw's now - 3, 5, x3, z4, 7. People don't seem to be liking the flame surfacing and bangle butt!!! I just got my wife an x5 - I figured if I like it now, it may soon be changed into something I don't like so well. The new 5's are growing on me as are the z4's. My neighbor has a new 7 that I just can't get used to. He got the sport pkg here in Indiana and couldn't even get out of his driveway this past winter.

    Good luck,

got one for my sister-in-law, she's looking to move into a 99-2000 Accord. Currently, she's driving a:

    1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4dr, 4x4.
    102,xxx miles on the clock.
    4sp Automatic
Newer tires/brake combo (within the last 6 months)
    Power windows and locks
    Aftermarket el-cheapo CD-player
A/C just went out last week, she'll try to fix it before getting rid of it, as long as its cheap to fix.
Decent to a little on the rough side condition, not very clean
right now, has some damage on the right front to the
bumper/headlight assembly due to a little fender bender. Doesn't
look to me like it will clean up really good, it just hasn't been
taken care of really well, but we'll try to detail it a bit and
       clean it up before hand.
No other known issues (transmission problems, oil leaks, 4x4 issue, etc...)
Purple exterior, darker cloth interior (not sure of actual interior color)
    East Tennessee region

don't think I'm forgetting anything... I'm guessing maybe $4's b/c of the miles and condition? I know this is a tough one without seeeing it, its a good test. She's going to be buried in it, too. I feel sorry for her, but I objected when she purchased it a few years back.

Looks like the 99-00 Accords lx's are $7-8ish range, maybe 9 for the low miler..

    thank you sir.

    Terry:

This refers to message #18455 - you asked me to let you know how it came out.

First off, I gave you the wrong mileage...I was selling a bl/grn 93 Si 4WS Prelude, has 82,000 miles, not 87,000 (like I said initially).

Just sold it for $5,500 only because I got tired of meeting tire kickers. First private sale for me, and what a pain! SO many calls, from all over the country! (One guy in Oklahoma (I'm in SC!) called me to let me know he was going to fly in and look at it. After I emailed him some good pictures, he practically said he would take it. Ended up selling it before he got here...

I put $5,900 in all my ads, and took $5,500 - hope I did not cave too quickly...car is in top top shape, but has had a couple of accidents (nothing major). Prob needs cooling system flush, windshield needs some adjusting, but other than that...very nice.

Just wanted to thank you for your response and recommendation. Now I can buy from a dealer without having to worry about them using a trade in as leverage.

    THANK YOU!
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
paul, im also in the midwest, and an escapr like yours will bring in the high $11's, low 12's in a heartbeat. if you are REALLY diligent and grind a dealer, with a completely detailed truck, you might...MIGHT see $12.5k.

retail-wise, i would ask $15k and take $14-$14.2k to finish it up.

Terry, have you had a chance to figure an estimate of the trade in and private saled values of a gray 98 Grand Caravan SE 113K miles, 5dr, AC, CD, rear captains seats, 3.3LV6, remote key, luggage rack, power doors/locks/mirrors. Has had some minor side body damaged repaired. Transmission rebuilt 6 months ago. Garaged indoors in Waverly Ohio. Does having a rebuilt transmission lower its value when you consider that the caravans have a history of tranny troubles?
    Thanks,

Asking $30,0 ...? .. dealer might have $23/$24 into it with the CPO .. Z3's are like rabbits, there all over the place .. $30 big ones.? .. let's try $27/$27,5 and call it a day, $28 if you just can't live without it ............ :)

    .... ** 2. 2000 BMW Z3 2.3 - 5spd, Harmon-Kardon sound, BMW CD Radio, Titanium Silver / Black leather, 32,000 miles. Dealer is asking $23K

2.3's aren't busting down any doors .. dealer might have the $17ish figure in it, maybe $18 with the CPO and a Partridge in a pear tree ... $21 would be just about all the peso's .. the miles save it.
