Private party retail is going to be less than the $4900; You will get $3000-$4000 out the door. Unless you live in a very specific type of area with lots of people from "South of the Border."
Oh by the way, did I mention they have been sold since last Sunday a week, so get ready to march up a few thousand over the posted figures ... wasn't my idea, but it seems to be working out quit well for them and their not even close to invoice on the rest ... lose a few hundred on two just to get them in the door and the rest will work itself out ~ these 2 lost leaders have done well ..........

Thanks in advance for your help with this valuation. We've been to a few Colorado dealers and their trade values seem laughable based upon research at edmunds, autotrader, nada, etc. even accounting for the high miles.
Kids are growin' and the GMC Suburban is just too big any more. Here are the details:

Just a matter of education here, but you can easily throw away any value book, even on a Surburban, when the ticker gets near 200,000 miles - there's not a retail lot in the nation that would touch it; most wholesalers will just move it on out; mom and pop used car places are scared of it; and no one, anywhere, would put a warranty on it.
Realistically, someone could buy it, drop in a reman engine and transmission, and drive it for another 200k - the thing is, considering the miles, $1,000-2,500 is a real trade number - you could detail it up and retail it, hopefully seeing the high $3s to low $4s.
Leave your ego and newfound book value knowledge on the curb - the books don't count when the miles are in the stratosphere.
I'm looking for a reasonable trade in value for my 2001 Golf GLS TDI/automatic. The car is very clean, 45,300 miles, black exterior and black velour interior with moonroof, alloy rims, single CD player. I've been watching these sell on Ebay on locally for about $13,500 and the dealer here in Detroit is only wanting to give me about $10,500. Should I hold out for more? I'm going to Chicago to possibly buy a 2004 Passat TDI wagon on Saturday. Passat dealer there is giving me $750 below sticker (MSRP=$28,315) and $1000 vw owner loyalty on a loaded Passat GLS TDI wagon with leather/wood trim and ESP. He wouldn't even quote a trade in price until he can see the car. I just don't know what to expect for my trade. Please help! Thanks
A little more than 1/2 of a new one strikes me as reasonable for nearly 4-year-old VW with 45k on the clock... in Rust City... this would sell in a heartbeat in the old country... but not for more than $11; Germans aren't sentimental about used-car values, but they love Diesels... $5.50/gal. BTW, REAL German cars have sticks...
Someone who lives or works in Detroit has a long commute and wants your car. Clean the stupid thing up, make it look like a star, finish any service it needs, and sell it privately.
Heck, put it on ebay if you want; it's not a bad venue and you will see a lot of $$, but watch out for the weirdos.
Finally, a $3k spread between wholesale and ebay retail strikes me as about right. I would not drive to Chicago to buy a VW; that's just nuts.

Now is the time to be "turning and burning" T/A's, Z28's, Vettes, 911's etc ... 6/7 weeks ago these things couldn't buy steam off a Hotdog up north ..
If we don't have any paintwork and we haven't had the wonderful opportunity to visit any high speed guard rails, then trade side, in and around the $20ish figure (depending on the dealer) .....
Great vehicle for the next 20/30 days for Retail Rd, superb Ad, great detail and $23,9 *asking* then kick that bad boy loose for the first $22,5/$23,5, summers are short in your neck of the woods and so is the memory of these types, so don't get greedy or you will be using it for a planter come September and the winters are long and the money get's short .....

Burbs still get their money with Big miles -IF- they are still in Good shape and the service is 110% .. if the interior is all gaffed-up, the outside has rust, it's been hit by 30 or 40 AK47 rounds, you can see the air in the tires and the 4x4 is getting ready for a Sonny Bono, then it's not worth much ..... but *if* it's like you described in John Elway territory, then it's still worth a little jingle even with the huge miles .. trade side in and around the $3's maybe the low low $3's maybe the mid $3's depending on the dealer and how really -clean- it really is .....
Unless your living in some secluded area like Aka with the bears, chirping birds and the mongooses I would be sending this boy down Retail Rd ... Super duper Ad, great detail, fix the fixable and be at $5,900 *asking* and cut it from the herd for the first $4,5/$5,5 .. I'm not a betting man, but I have sent alot of Burbs up to the Rockies and I will bet this one won't last long: target figure $5large ............

as long as its spotless inside and out, has deep rubber and hasnt been driven under a barbed wire fence, you could expect in the $11,0k range up to around $11,5k. a STRONG call might get you up to $12k, but that would be winning the lottery.
down retail road, the paper says $14,9k, and you wave bye-bye around $13k-$14k.

What should I expect to pay?

the saturn, even in good shape, will only bring about $500-$700 if your lucky.

$10,500 is about all the money for an 01 with 45k in that region of the country, actually $10,5 is all the money for any region, the "02's" with miles in the 15/20k range are hardly seeing the $13ish figure come trade side .. as far as Ebay, Cars R Us, Cars R Yu, etc, etc, $13,500 is a "retail" asking price, so you need to waddle down Retail Rd to see $12+, it's your call ................

The Pathfinder is a maroon XE, 2WD with 110,000 miles. It has the big offroad package of fender flares, alloys, and side rails. It has a power package, auto trans and new tires, but not much else. No paint work and the interior is clean and free of any significant damage. Both vehicles are parked in Birmingham, Alabama.
At the end of January you told me my Passat wagon was worth high 15s to maybe the low 16s. Carmax offered $16,000, so your aim appears to be true.
As an aside, how are RX-8s holding up in the used market?
I remember a post a LOOOOONG time ago where you recommended Dash Auto Transport (?Big Mike?). Is this who you still recommend?

Thought I would give ya some follow up.
Sold my 1999 Odyssey EX with 88,750 mi. for 13K to the first party looking. (makes me realize doing a good detail job does wonders in selling a car) so far 3 for 3 in first time lookers buying. (the others were the Volvo 940 and Ford 350), Thanks again for your wonderful insight, Think will be sticking tight with our current rides.

I'm thinking about trading in my Durango to something a bit more fuel-efficent, and I'm wondering what would constitute a fair trade-in value.
Specs:
1998 Dodge Durango Sport Utility
60,000 miles
V8 5.2L
Dual front airbags, rear ABS, towing package, AM/FM Cassette/CD player, driver's power seat, roof rack, running boards, Dodge Red color.
The notorious ball joints were replaced 2 years ago, the brakes, alignment, shocks, and struts are all up to date, and it has has regular maintenance.
The only VERY MINOR blemish is some faint rub marks on the top of the back bumper, where things have been slid in and out of the trunk.
Kelly bluebook says fair to good value: $6500 - $7500. Whatchya'll think?

1994 Buick Skylark Custom 4-door sedan in Chicago
Cubs blue with blue cloth, 100.3k miles
3.1 V6 automatic, a/c, pwr wind/locks, tilt, working fact. AM/FM stereo no cassete 4 speakers
Good=body excellent for an older GM in the city, could use a wax, but surprisingly, no real fading or thinness, no rust, no dents, no major scratches, all four factory hubcaps intact, very presentable for what it is.
Interior also nice, no rips, no big stains, no funky smells, all glass good.
Engine runs really well, recent major tune-up and OS, recent front suspension repairs, trans shifts fine, recent exhaust, matching BFG tires are at about 70%, if a bit scuffed
Bad=air not ice cold, driver's power window is moody going up, locks are stiff from the outside (may fix locks or both if not too pricey)
I know these cars are duds on the market, but this one at least has the revered V6 and lowish miles. I'm thinking any presentable, good running car made in the '90s should be worth at least $1500. Maybe he should ask $22-25 and take $15-2k from anyone with cash in hand? Whaddya think? Thanks.
Right now, consider any offer over $1000 as generous. Especially for an ASAP sale with the car as-is.
He should get the AC up to spec and the sticky windows and locks fixed, detail out really nice, ask $2900 and send it loose for $2200-$2500.
a nice detail should be all you spend on this beater. the buyer of a car like this will expect things to be wrong. get rid of it.
1993 Toyota Camry V6 LE (auto)
Dark green with grey cloth, gold package
150K big miles
Cold a/c, all power options, am/fm/cass, ABS, tilt, cruise. Everything works except (after an unfortunate carwash trauma) the antenna won't retract the last 6 inches
Mechanically all original with no known problems
No major cosmetic flaws but a few small scratches and dings, one dime-sized spot of bubbling paint around a chip. No other rust and the paint shines. Interior very nice and clean (nonsmokers)
It's a one owner with dealer service records from day one and lives in Chicago. Will be going "retail road." What say the learned ones?
I agree that it is NOT worth any other AC work.
Besides, who in Chicago really needs AC?? (g)
Once the system is empty, you just refill with R134a + some oil compatible with R134a. The kits are available at the supermarket and are cheap.
The rub is in the word "empty", you can't just vent your system to the air... that is, you can, but it'll cost $10k in fines, IIRC. It's still perfectly legal if it slowly leaks itself empty.
And authorized shops are still allowed to recharge with R12, and the prices have -- I think -- stabilized, because of shrinking demand. Around $30/lb, at least a year and a half ago. I'd just switch...

I am no expert on the particulars of a car's repair, just trying to give some friendly advice of what has worked for me.
As I said, if the system needs major repair, forget about it. But if for $50 it DOES work, it would be great to be able to tell the buyer it does work.
It's a 11 year Buick with lowish miles, try the $50 buck routine .. get the little darlin' cleaned up and do a nice little ad, then grab the $2,5ish for it and have a nice day .. the day of the "nice" cheapo $500 vehicle is loooong over ...

Anyway, it's a 2wd XE and it has the nice basics, about 110k, auto, rubber is deep and you say it's nice for the year with little or few kisses ... trade side, in and around the mid to high $4's, "might" "maybe" see the low low low low low $5's if everything goes your way and we have the proper alignment with Pluto ..
The G35 has a few miles on it for an 03 plus it's a meat clever, dealer probably dropped the $24/$25 figure in it, it maybe hit's the table at $26(?) with a CPO, he has to make a profit, so maybe $28ish ... whats he asking .?
04 RX-8's with 2/4/6k are rolling in and around that $25ish figure at the block .....
