You've been a great help to me on several occasions and I appreciate the service you provide on here.
Okay, here goes:
I have a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4. V-8.Tourador Red, with Gray fenders. Sunroof. 53000 miles. New tires (less than 5000 miles on them). Gray cloth interior, no french fry or coke stains. No third row seat. No Walmart dings. There is a small amount of the gray paint peeling from overly aggressive self service car washing on the left rear quarter panel. AM-FM- Single CD.
The miles are highways miles, as I cover a multiple state area. 4WD works great as I use it about once a month to visit remote oil and gas wells. I change the oil and rotate the tires every 5000 miles and use Mobil 1 Synthetic. It will need new brake pads within the next 10,000 miles. I could put them on if it will help the value of the trade/sale.
It also has a 100,000 mile Ford Extended Warranty that is transferable.
I need something bigger to haul around some equipment that we sell.
Your thoughts as to how much to get via trade in or selling it myself?
Thanks,
Mike
=== Hey Mike, how goes it .? good description, thanks .... *no 3rd seat.? -no ticky no washy, miles are on the tallish side, color is good, needs new stoppers, V8 4x4 XLT .. lots of these dudes rolling through the streets and the brakes won't help much .. trade side, in and around the low to mid $12's, "might" get a dealer to go blind and miss that 3rd seat, but he won't miss the miles .... down Retail Rd, same deal, super duper detail, wonderful Ad, $14,900 *asking* and send it down the Yellow Brick Rd for the first $13,9/$14,5 ~ the warranty is no help on the trade side, but it's "All" the help down Retail Rd ...
Don't forget: ... let me know what happens.!
Terry.
The only trouble here is the fact that you are competing against brand new Accords. That's a bit heavy on the miles side plus there is low interest financing available on the new ones.
So, most shoppers will be demanding a deep discount over the price of a new one.
Here are my candidates:

Won't hurt to run a nice four line ad in the local rag.
Also, the fog lights and rear spoiler don't really add any book value to the car although they are a plus unless you get one of those people who thinks the spoiler detracts from the looks of the car.
I think you can do okay.. It only takes one buyer, and someone that is a serious shopper will realize the value of the extras. I agree with Craig, though.. 17K on an '04 is the biggest negative.

=== The miles are semi-low, if it's knee deep, no K-mart collisions, no KFC and it's clean with the pd and leather, then $8 grand seems like "all" the peso's ~ all the cookies in the cookie jar, all the Z's in the zipcode and then some ...
The last title history might show Mass, but the Vin# and the carfax shows the land of the Maple Leaf .. what damages the value is, that vehicle could have run 25 miles or could have run 25,000 before the Odo switch when it was registered in the States, so mileage is TMU (True Mileage Unknown) .... you live in Idaho or Utah or someplace like that right.? - $8 grand American money ..? grab it .!!! .. anywhere else on the planet it "might" be worth $5,000/$6,000 ........... $10,000 for a vehicle with hinky mileage .? Dorothy and Toto are lookin' for a ride home, maybe you can accomodate them ............................... ;-)
And no, your not the first one .. every fall/winter time I get a herd of folks from NY, Mass, Conn, etc and they all wonder why their ABC is only worth about 50% less, maybe it's that EL Cheapo Canadian deal they just "couldn't" pass-up on .. *consumers, always trying to outsmart themselves .l.o.l..

=============
Depending on where ya live .. no help in the windshield part, did we forget that part.? .. anyway the miles are low, service is up to date, auto, new round things, cold breeze .. if we haven't visited the body shop lately and we didn't lose our Swiss Army knife in the seats, then trade side, in and around the low to mid $5's, the windshield doesn't help ya know ......
Terry.
Color is right, it's an EX auto 4 banger will large miles and you say it's clean, hole in the roof, wheels, seems like all the stuff with a chicken wing .. what can I say, it's an 04, but it's a 04 with tall miles, maybe we should find you a better dating service ...
Trade side, in and around the super tall $16's low $17's, "might" get a dealer to crawl towards $18 on a bright blue day with dark sunglasses, maybe ... the miles kill ya here, plus stuff like foggers and spoilers pull about .20cts on the dollar (no matter what the books say) it does give it a better and quicker chance to sell because of the "eyeball" appeal, but don't hold your breath for big money .. down Retail Rd, $19,999 *asking* and $18,9/$19,5 gets a new owner .. park the ego because new 4 banger Accords sell for peanuts in Hotlanta ......

$16,998 for a 03 DX
http://carmax.com/dyn/factsheet/factsheet.aspx
I'm going to ask for $20,000. If it doesn't sell I won't be too upset because I still like the car .. I am just ready for something else. I think I am going to stick to older cars again because new car buying isn't very conducive to switching cars every 6-12 months.
The dealers in the SE are only paying the high $12's, super low $13's for the 03 DX's with miles in the 13/15/17k range .. and they will cut them from the herd in a Nano second for the first $14,5/$14,9 - anything over that is just an *asking* price .. I sell to alot of your Hotlanta dealers .l.o.l...
Terry.
Depending on where you live -oh, now I see it, black vehicles in Texas in almost July, big sellers, yup .. the first one looks sharp, single cab and we have the - Infinity sound system, Billet Grille, Fog Lights, Flowmaster exhaust, 20" rims, Goodyear Eagle 275/55/20 tires, Bedliner, Sliding rear window, Keyless entry, Heated mirrors, Stereo with CD and tape, Tachometer, Brand new floor mats, Child safety equipped, low miles -20000. Looks BEAUTIFUL and sounds INCREDIBLE!!
golly ghee, my hearts apoundin' just reading it (where's my milk and cookies?) and it's a Hemi, the miles aren't THAT low .. but anyway, the dealer probably hit him at the mid/high $15's, maybe the low low low low $16's on a push, so of course he's down Retail Rd ... $18,900.? lotsa money for a single cab 2wd with 20k, I have a feelin' he paid lots of money for the aftermarkets and wants profit on something thats worth .20cts on the dollar and let me guess, his pay-off is $18,5, right .? .. $17,5/$17,9ish would be all the cake for this dude ...
#2) with 33k big fat miles and asking $20,850 .? the man is bold I will give him that .. another truck 2WD Regular Cab in black, and what size V8.? anyway, he can't have a dime more than the $14's in it, might have went nuts and snorted some Draino, missed the bookie and has his 3rd wife on the hook for 3 months back alimony and dropped the $15's in it with 33k (shudder) - almost $21 *asking*.?!? .. okay, I'm thinkin' he would send that loser south of the border for the small $17's for a quiet Sunday at a nice Baptist church ....................
Last and certainly not least, this Fat daddy:

This is probably a $19ish vehicle on my side of the fence .. but down Retail Rd (if the humidity doesn't kill everyone in H-Town first) you know the deal, superlative detail, fantastic Ad with some wonderful low level shots in the shade pics, $23,900 *asking* and the hammer slams down at the first $22,5/$23,5 ~ color will hold this one back, so don't get greedy ....
Let me know ............
Terry.
Thanks for the info Terry. That's exactly what I wanted to hear about the TT. I paid $24,500 for it August 2003, so I wouldn't mind sending it away for $22.5 to 23.5 one bit.
I figured those trucks were off the mark. It just seems damn hard to find those cute little short bed 2 door sport jobbers with the Hemi tho.
Can you think of any trucks with big engines (Gas V8) that you can get with a manual trans? I know the SRT-10 comes with a 6 speed, but I'm not gonna spend that much. I'm trying to cut back to buy a house, and also need a plywood/furniture/whatever hauler.

=======================
Morning Janet ... (except for the location part) good description, Thanks.!
** I found out about this Board as I was cruising somewhere else ** ......
Yeah, it seems Edmunds has been keeping RWTIV's a little on the secret side, you don't see us on the: Today's Top 10 Discussions much anymore even though this is one of the busiest forums on the planet, I guess they think folks would rather discuss doorknobs and pancake breakfasts more .l.o.l....
Anyway, I don't have a location for this one, so today you live in the Raleigh-Durham area ..
For starters: "light behind clock is out" .. oh sounds bad, no one will want this one .. in some area's of the universe it's a $5,000 deduct, then in some parts of the galaxy it's a no-counter, here, it's a no-counter .. it's a 98 GT with an auto, miles are ok for the year but tall for a retail dealer, we have 2 holes in the roof, no sale green, new round things with wheels and a few parking lot kisses .... if the service is 110%, strong stoppers, no paint by numbers, then trade side in and around the tall $4's low $5's depending on the dealer ...
Terry ;-)
If you really like the trucks pick a figure you feel comfortable with, then "go in", bring some cake and negotiate that figure ... the problem today is, most folks think an email or a fax that doesn't get answered is negotiating, it's not and most don't get taken seriously ~ thats why God made shredders .. when I bought my last boat, I went to the factory first, walked and talked to the guys that actually build them and did lunch with the VP and it was done inside of a few hours, both left a winner ...........
Terry.
That being said, I'm going to be in the market for a larger SUV. I need more hauling space and capacity and I also want to take advantage of the Section 179 tax break (which means over 6000 lbs. gross). I'm thinking Seqouia or Armada. What is your opinion of these, or should I be looking at others? (I hate the Tahoes and Expeditions).
As always,thanks,
Mike
Your size can make a huge difference .. being 6ft tall means nothing to you when your all legs and your buddy is all torso, your both the same height, but you both would probably feel different in similar vehicles, so you need to drive them and put some miles in a few (without the salesman) ..
Personally I prefer the Sequoia's, very similar to the Tahoes, but I "like" the mid size SUV's better, like the RX330's and the XC90 Volvo because I like mid-size vehicles, it's just personal taste and what you are towing and the "real weight" .. but if I'm towing, it's going to be a Burb, again, it doesn't make it good or bad, just personal preference ... I just put 220 miles on a V8 Touareg, looks nice, rode ok .. me, I don't see it, not for that kind of money, but it was sold this morning, so somebody liked it enough to buy it in about 17 minutes .... taste, personal taste ..
thats why I say: Always buy and drive what YOU like .............
Terry ;-)
I think I've found what I want, only problem is its new, and I'm deathly afraid of the big double Ds....Dodge Depreciation. Think this Rumble Bee ( http://www.dodge.com/ram_performance/?context=ram_truck&type=- textLink ) might be more immune to depreciation? I know you can't say with certainty, but I'm led to believe it might hold its value better, espescially when the track record of the older SS/T special edition is considered. Or is your crystal ball in for repairs this week?
"$19,900 *asking* and send it packing for the first $18,5/$19,5 .... "
Well, 3 months after your advice and 2K miles later, I started running nice detailed ADs at 21K, then dropping down to 18.9K. After 6-8 weeks of ADs in the biggest paper in state, plus some other Auto mags, websites, I received ONE call. Didn't even sell to that caller, by the time they were finished trying to lowball me, someone locally saw the "for sale" sign in the window and stole it for $17,250.
Oh well, I guess it is better than the trade-in...maybe...but when you consider ad fees, tax savings on trading, aggravation, I think I should have traded in...can't win them all!
I feel sorry for anyone with a 5-series to sell in CT.
At least 15 nice people in South Africa were willing to "Wire" me my full asking price! Can someone say SCAM!
Lastly, on your hunch that I would go for the FX35 over the X3...I'm now driving a beautiful white/terracotta leather X3 3.0 and loving it!
Thanks for your help but sellers beware...the market here in CT is S -- L --- O --- W!
I need an update on what my trade is currently worth:
2001 Infiniti I30t, touring, silver over black, slider, 6 disc, auto, traction control, in southern Kentucky, 51k miles. In very good condition for year. No french fry attacks, but does have one small (inch long) cart attack on bottom of bumper in front of driver's front wheel.
What do you peg this one at? Carmax offered $14.5k on Saturday. One dealer said $13k on trade for Acura TL; Nissan dealer said maybe $13.5k on Maxima.
Thanks so much
Rick

DANGER Will Robinson .!!!!
Your right.! .. this is a Big Scam and it's getting bigger everyday - unfortunately alot of this is going on in Ebay, the papers and online ad's, Q has had 5 or 6 of these on his Lexus from "buyers" from England and I get em' everyday ... Sellers beware.!
Terry.
I'm wondering if I can get an idea as to what I could get for my car. Car's located in Houston, TX.
43K miles. Might not sell it for another two or three months (and another 2-3K miles), but I'm curious as to what I can get for it now. My financing is up in October.
2001 VW New Beetle GLS
2.0 Engine
Second owner; bought as a dealer return when car had 600 miles on it. (Nice misunderstand at the dealership where people thought they were buying a turbo and the dealership bought the car back.)
Automatic
Silver
Sunroof
Grey leather interior
No accidents
Rear brakes replaced in Nov 2003; all four tires in Dec 2003. Both have less than 10K miles on them.
Most of the maintenance has been done. No 40K service yet, but I've done part of it already in replacing brakes and tires. All recalls checked on and done where necessary.
New air compressor this month.
Check engine light problems all fixed.
Relatively clean, biggest spill a huge Starbucks, but nothing a shampoo won't get out. Floor mats are missing, though.
Paint is glossy, just a light door ding here and there and a few light scratches in the paint with one bad one. Worst scratch is an inch-long scrape down to the black rubber on the rear bumper where somebody must have scraped me in a parking lot.
Body work needed: busted front spoiler (around the fog lamps) from bottoming out in a parking lot. Mostly noticable because the ring is missing around one of the lights.
One small star in the windshield that I'm going to get fixed.
The fog lights currently don't work, either, but this should be fixed as well, with luck. Garage that worked on my a/c managed to unhook them rather than hook them back up, so I need to make them hook them up again.
Thanks!

I love this part .l.o.l.. why does everyone want to know if they got a good deal AFTER they have leased/purchased a new vehicle.? .. the topic "Prices Paid" and "Lease Questions" is Loaded with them ...
But Andre1969 your a good guy, so I will let you know -- 9k with leather 04 LX, $17,990 plus the trade, plus the tax, the wax and the roof rack .. dealer probably paid the super high $14's, low low low low $15's for it, after a this and that he "might" have had the mid to high $15's in it, maybe ... so the dealer made about $2,5/$3,0 large, thats a pretty good pop on a Crown Vic .l.o.l.....

Let me know what happens ...

These dudes have to be cleaner than the "Board of Health" and twice as sanitary to get any real money ... that means service from yesterday, seats look hovered in, no Sears rubber, no paintwork, plus the S320 is no barn burner, the S420/500/600 are the "real deal" ...
If it's super nice, super clean then the dealer might be lookin' in the $8's, probably the low $8's with almost 100k, might get a dealer to crawl into the $9's if it's a Baby Doll and it needs -0- ...
Retail $$.? - the books and the info sources go nuts, look at Edmunds, their showing $13 trade money, there's not a dealer between Maine and San Diego that would even pay close to that unless it had 50/60k and it "glowed in the dark" it's puuuurfect and it just needs 1 thing ~ a "For Sale" sign ... the private sellers will go nuts when they *ask* the $16/$17's and only get offered the $12/13ish figure, now if it was a clean S500 that would be a whole different bedtime story ..............................

2001 Chevy Cavalier, base, auto, 65k miles, silver/gray, not sure if it has a/c or not, am/fm/let's say cass. Nice car, well cared for, has the body colored bumpers and spoiler, BUT the front bumper is busted......collision with a cop (don't ask, long story).

Sounds like a pretty nice driver, right color and the miles are on the lowish side .. $14,5 .? .. that my friend, is the whole "Coma Se' yama" and the bag of chips - $15 would just flat kill it, I wouldn't be a player for it unless it had miles in the 25/30k range at $15,0 and it needed .. -0- .... be there.!
Terry :-)
