Are Tundras one of those cases where ya really don't save anything if you buy used, since they hold their value well? I'm rather disenchanted with the whole Dodge experience now....

    Terry,
139,000 miles on a Cashmere colored Accord EX 4dr sedan. I'm the only owner. Very clean inside and out. Nicely detailed. No accidents. One spot of rust starting over right rear wheel well. All maintenance records up-to-date, timing belt done at 90K, etc. (Minor add-ons - moonroof visor, pinstripe) Stock EX. Owned in Atlanta GA for 6 yrs, then to Philadelphia suburbs, PA

    What do you think?

    terry:

if you could please help me determine what a good price for my car is, i would really appreciate it. i already have a new car and have had no luck selling my car to a private person. i did not trade in b/c i am leasing my new car. i am bringing my car to one of those lots that buy your cars for cash. it is a 1999 honda accord ex-v6 coupe- dark green, fully loaded with:
power moonroof, cd player, abs, power everything, spoiler, tan leather interior, automatic, alloy wheels. I am the only owner and the car is in clean condition. it has 85,000 highway miles. i got a quote from this lot for anywhere from $7000 - $12,000 but they have to look at it. i am looking for about $10,000. is that realistic? what do you think? by the way, i live in nj and the lot is in ny. thanks. nicole

Just got back a bit ago from our trip. The Titan turned 4k miles, is 3 weeks old........OUCH!!!

It was flawless, pulled a 22 ft Nash weighing approx 6500 lbs without a hiccup. We went through the mountains and down to the coast to dig clams.........if I EVER see another clam its too darn soon!!! Truck averaged 10 mpg and 20 lookie loos at the campground........Everybody wanted to know what it was, how we liked it, ect.

Hubby is floored by the truck, says its one of the best he's driven and towed with. All I know is its comfy and the kids don't fight in it.

We hated the rental travel trailer.......too darn small!! Looking at a Fleetwood Wilderness, nice trailers.

We are off to go salmon fishing on Saturday.....rack up another 400 miles or so.

    Terry, Need Help on 1999 528i by steve124 Jun 29, 2004 (9:43 pm)
Would appreciate if you could help me make up my mind.
I found 1999 BMW 528i in a used car lot.
    3 owners
    54k miles
    $19.5K
    silver
    auto
    premium package
    no cd
    no cold package
interior/exterior looks clean but not perfect

    Is this a good buy?

                     ===========================

Depends on the location, the service history and the "real deal" condition .. color is good, miles are low - if the tires are deep and we don't don't have any Picasso paintwork .. then the dealer probably paid the super ultra tall $15's, low/mid $16's for it, add some service, a this and a that and he could possibly have the low $17's in it ... $19,5.? he's not trying to kill anyone, maybe $18,9 and you guys can mate ................... :)

    01 Durango by etze_ Jun 30, 2004 (10:43 am)
I am not have any luck with finding what I was looking for, but here is candidate on a Dodge dealers lot.

     2001 Durango SLT
     Black
     4 Wheel drive
     Third seat
     Rear Air
     4 Brand spankin' new tires
     4.7L V-8
     Cloth seats, gray
     29,000 miles
very clean condition, Its black and still does not show a mark.

Dealer is asking $19,995, and so far he is down to $18,300 .I think it is still too much. Should I continue to fish(it is the last day of the quarter) or cut bait?

        ======================================

Depending on where this truck lives ..

01 Durango SLT, 4wd, 3rd seat (big help) hot and cold running air, 29k low miles, born yesterday rubber, black (depends on the area) V8 and gray cloth ... sounds like a pretty nice vehicle, bad color down south though ....... was *asking" $19,995, nows he's down to $18,300 ...

Thats a Great price if your name is Saddam and you have $75 million piled away and you need 20 of them to carry your money and lawyers around ...... dealers can get 01 R/T's with low miles for the low $15's and wave goodbye at those at $17,9 ....... $18,3 for a 4wd SLT 4.7 with cloth .? .. dealer might have paid the high $13's, could have gone nutso and paid the low to mid $14's on a baaaad bet, then did some service and dropped $400 in round things .. $16,5/$16,9 would be ALL the money - Durango's are like fat girls, there's a bunch around ......... :)

I ended up doing the deal for a new Scion, and traded in my Maxima ('99 SE 5 speed, cloth,49K). Got $8,500, so low 9's with the tax credit. Maybe could have retailed for more, but I'm already trying to sell my Miata, so this was painless.

Realized it was a bit more rumpled than I thought while cleaning it out. Ran real good, but had quite an assortment of nicks, scratches and dings, so not in the wrapper by any means. And boy, did it need a detail!

Again, thanks for all the help. You do a great job. Now jump on that G35 I posted yesterday ;-)

Also, as an example of what the service we get here is worth, a different Toyota dealer offered $6,500 (2K less) about a month ago, claiming it was "top dollar", also on a car going out at MSRP. Terry was well worth his fee this time!

We test drove a SVT a few years ago. Nice ride, fast enough, and handled well. But my 6'6 husband doesn't fit too comfortably in one.

I'm staying away from the car lots too. At least until our Ody goes back off lease. And then when our newly acquired Accord goes back we will buy it out as long as we still like it.

The situation wer are in is this:

We own 3 cars, 2002 Accord, 99 Sienna, 03 Passat. DH drives the Accord and we're keeping that one, I drive the Sienna, the in-laws drive the Passat. In-laws are moving this August so we'll be stuck with 3 cars.

I want to keep either keep the Sienna and sell the Passat or sell both cars and buy a new Sienna or Highlander. We are upside down on the Passat (owe $23K) and would break even on the Sienna (we ow $12,500).

Is it possible to trade in both the Passat and the Sienna and add maybe $3K down? Or is the best option (financially) to suck it up, sell the Sienna and me take the Passat back over (with 2 kids ages 7 months and 7 years)?

    Thanks,

    Carrie

Depends on how soon you're planning on trading it in. If you keep it forever, it will probably run forever, especially with the Amsoil.

    Hello!

I've been referred to this discussion by CAR MAN.

I'm trying to get out of my lease with NMAC and the only option they tell me, is to pay the difference in price after the car is sent to auction. How can I get a sense of what type of money I'll be looking at paying??

The car is a 2003 Nissan Xterra. 48 month lease ending in Jan '07. It's got 13,900 miles on it, no exterior damage and the following features: 4X2 automatic transmission, power keyless entry, power windows, dual-airbags, ABS, A/C, single CD/AM/FM radio, cruise control, tilt wheel, compass.

I've had it since Jan. '03 and am moving back to NYC 2 years earlier than expected. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    THANK YOU!!
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
first of all, be careful what NMAC tells you about auction...it sounds like they are talking about a voluntary repossession, which will murder your credit. put it in the paper, and be prepared to pay THAT difference.

    1. 2003 GMC Sierra C1500 (base)
1300 miles, 2WD, regular cab, short bed, 4.3L V6, automatic, CD player, tilt wheel, bedliner. Fire engine red. With that mileage, it ought to be in perfect condition, but I haven't looked at it yet.

    2. 2002 GMC Sierra C1500 (base)
29,000 miles, 2WD, regular cab, short bed, 4.3L V6, automatic, CD player, tilt wheel, bedliner. Fire engine red. Looks to be in good condition, but it has a bunch of tacky looking aftermarket add-ons that, to me, reduce its value: Chrome wheelwell moldings, bodyside moldings, window vent shades, and aluminum toolbox.

What does the oracle say on these? Thanks!
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
I'm assuming NMAC not allow a "clean" lease transfer that would absolve you of liability if the sublesee doesn't pay up. If they did, you could probably get someone to assume your lease, since you are okay on mileage.

Essentially, Bowke is right, you will have to pay NMAC all remaining lease payments plus the lease-end buyout price, and sell your Xterra for whatever it is worth on the open market.
  • garigari Member Posts: 10
Unfortunately NMAC will not allow a "clean" lease transfer. I'll still be on the lease and potentially liable for any default on the part of the subleasee. There are those services that shop your car and find someone to take over the lease, but their "insuranc" policies seem to be pretty ambiguous and I haven't heard from anyone out there - any stories, good or bad RE: this service.

As for getting out of the lease altogether, NMAC sent me a letter saying "If you choose to terminate your lease early, the realized value will be determined upon the sale or appraisal of your vehicle. A comparison of the following will be made and the lesser amount will be used to determine the early termination charge:

    1. Your adjusted lease balance minus the realized value of the vehicle

    OR

    2. The sum of your remaining lease payments not yet due plus any excess wear and use and mileage.

    *********

I'm just wondering how to find out the "realized value" of the car to help me make a better determination as to how to proceed.

whatever you can sell it for.
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
have you thought of taking your car to a couple of Nissan dealers to see if they will buy your Xterra outright from you?

Also, do you have a Carmax near you? They will pay Nissan off in full. If there is negative equity you would have to pay them. But since they are a dealer their payoff would be lower than yours or another private party because dealers don't pay sales tax.

Well.........if you ask the guys around here I'll be out of the Titan by Oct/Nov. If you ask hubby I'm in it for a LONG time.

Actually I am thrilled with the truck and have yet to find a reason to even consider trading it. Like hubby says, usually by the 3/4 week mark I'm looking for reasons, oddly I haven't even thought about it.

Truck was at the dealer today to have a couple things fixed and they gave me a 2002 Dodge Stratus to drive.......not a bad car, but I couldn't wait to get my Titan back. Thankfully they had it done in 2 hours.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
The Nissan dealer wholesaled the Chevy K3500 and my mom's Cavalier to the same used dealer......he's asking $2500 for my mom's Cavalier.

The one I almost choked on was the K3500.......he wants $6600 BIG ones for that thing. All I say is good luck, we couldn't give it away for $4k.

And NO I didn't go ask the used dealer, saw the ads in the paper and just shook my head.

I'm AVOIDING the car lots........that mean I might be on my way to recovery??
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
I don't think the Titan will be traded before Oct/Nov. But I do predict that you will make some type of automotive purchase before the end of the year. Us car addicts can't stop the addiction that fast and that easy. And if you DID break it that fast and that easy please let me in on your secret ....
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Can't say for sure if its broken or not. I'm inclined to say it is, mainly because I'm so smitten with my wonderful Titan. I can honestly say I've never liked a vehcle as much as I like the Titan.
  • racer63racer63 Member Posts: 83
Me and Mrs. Racer63 went looking at crew cab Titans tonight, as part of trying to figure out our continuing dilemna over what to do with the 99 Exploder V8 and 95 29' motorhome we have. I have the itch to replace one or the other. Mrs. likes the RV at race events, since trucks don't come with queen size beds, bathrooms, refrigerators and microwaves. I, OTOH, have a problem with paying a lot of money for something that will sit in a corner of the back yard most of the time, and ties up a ton of depreciating capital. The one we got now we own outright. So we haven't done anything yet, except look and get more confused.

All I got to say about the Titan though is, what a sweet machine. Lightest on its feet full size truck I've ever driven. Felt less ponderous to drive than the Exploder. Sort of reasonable price too, for what you get, compared to the domestics with similar equipment. Wife could easily imagine herself in it daily. Don't know if that's good or bad.....
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Its an easy truck to love there's NO doubt there. I drive mine on a daily basis and have no regrets. Its definatly a better driving truck then my 04 Exploder was, I don't miss that thing at all. Easy to forget its a full size truck, drives like a car.

1995 Buick Century Special, sedan, white, 4-cylinder, 256K, airbag and ABS, full power, cruise, cassette, looks and runs like new, no excuses, to be perfect it needs the antenna replaced (car wash guy broke it off with pliers) and one tire. Parents bought it new, always serviced, everything works, icy cold AC, they gave to me last November at 224K and I have put 32K on it and it's as good as new IMO. Best offer so far was a $700 trade in on a 2004 Cavalier, and that was a sour deal all the way around, so no way. I have been asking $2400, and have dropped my asking prices to $1800. I just want to get another Century but in the station wagon bodystyle and 1992 or older so it doesn't have the airbag or ABS. I don't like ABS.

Also have a 1986 Volvo 740GLE wagon, 4-cylinder, automatic, blue on tan leather, very rough but runs, drives, turns, and stops. 249K but odo broke so who knows, 260K? 280K? 300K? I don't know and don't care, but it is a driver and I have been told to scrap it even though it always starts and runs and does what I ask it to. $80 was the highest junkyard offer IF I drive it in, $25 if they come get it. I would drive this to Cali if I could get cash for it. What can I do?
  • occupant1occupant1 Member Posts: 412
I have also been thinking of trading both my Buick and Volvo in on a minivan, specifically a 1999-2000 Windstar LX 4-door, in black. Haven't found any black ones yet but seeing lots of 60-100K 99-00 models in the $8000-$10000 range. They can still be financed at that point, but I think the prices are high for a 4/5-year old van way out of warranty.

What are basic 1999 and 2000 model Windstars selling for these days? Would I do better with a Caravan/Voyager for pricing purposes? I won't buy a GM minivan, love GM products, but the 97-up FWD models have engine isues and the Astro/Safari, much as I'd love one, would use too much gas in city driving.

      ========================================

Did NMAC give you that information or did the dealer tell you this ..? .. remember, after you tattoo the paperwork the dealer is OUT of the deal, he can't raise, lower or change any figures, so cut the middleman out and always deal Directly with the lease co. (no matter what the dealer tells you) ..

NMAC as a rule won't let you flip the lease unless your still on the deal, you can transfer the vehicle (if the credit is strong) and someone else can make payments and go through the motions, but your still on the hook at the lease end for miles, tires, meteorite hit's stuff like that, your also still on the hook in case the guy runs over the Pope ...

Now, you can sell it and pay the difference to the lease co - or, let them run it thought the auction and you pay the difference from there -after- they pay recon, auction fee, transport, detail, rep fee's and the paperwork ..

Now here is the Hinky part: the potential "possible" problem is, or I should say can be is, that "most" of the time (not all of the time) that this will reflect on your credit as a *Repossession* .. yep, that Nasty little mark on your credit that says you didn't pay for this little darlin' and you ripped off the lender for XXXXXX ...

I know the "sweet little person" you might be speaking with might be saying: "no big deal, we do it everyday" - the problem is, she/he talks with folks All Day and hears every sad story on the planet, so they are almost immune and could care less, kinda like insurance co's .l.o.l.. you need to be speaking with the Regional/District lease manager and have *everything* in writing and *signed* off by them, and when it's done, you need to have your $$ ready to rock n' roll (if this does work out) or believe me, it will come back like the Sword of Damocles and knock your head off, and the only thing that will be rolling, will be your credit - downhill in a heartbeat .! ~ and you won't be able to buy steam off a hotdog ................ :(

Now that we have covered all of the positives .l.o.l.. your pay-off right now, is "approx" all the remaining payments (minus the monthly sales tax) plus the Residual

We are looking at a 03 Xterra 2wd with 14k -- I don't know if it's a 4 banger or a 6 banger (big difference) don't know if it's XE or a SE or color or location (big difference) - but since Car_Man sent you over and I have already invested all this time, I won't send you to your room ... *So I will figure a V6 XE with 14k 2wd with no lumps or bumps, depending on the region/location it will see in and around the mid to high $15's at the auction, then minus all the stuff .... now if you decide to go down Retail Rd and sell it yourself, get a great detail, a superlative 5 liner Ad, $18,499 *asking* and cut that bad boy loose at the first glimmer of $17/$18,0 ~ lets not hope this is a 4 banger, because they have the resale value of Chinese rice ........... :)

Good luck and let me know what happens ..............

                               Terry.

"Now, you can sell it and pay the difference to the lease co"

    terry...did you just admit that????

i thought you said i was wrong?

back in the financing board, you said: "you need to read his and Mfullmer posts again because their right on the money"

you were referring to people who were telling me that you cant sell a leased car. which way is it?
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
...Can we let that argument rest?
Remember what Kissinger said: "University politics are vicious precisely because the stakes are so small."

I think everybody has a pretty good idea how all this works, and we're really arguing about nuances.

Fact is, you can't "sell" a leased car, but you can sure come to an agreement with a prospective buyer, buy out the lease, and then transfer title. Voila: The car is "sold".

It is a lot like selling a car with a lien, except it's not quite as straightforward.

If I have it wrong, please educate me via email and I'll delete my post. But I don't think we want to rehash that whole argument...

    Have a nice weekend, everyone!

$700 trade in on the Century with 256K and the 4cyl? Sounds like they had a little extra profit on the Cavalier so they could SHOW you that much for your trade. Even on the Buy Here Pay Here market that car has little value. I have to laugh when you say good as new with 256K. Maybe decent running condition. Even though it seems to run good, it needs tires and an antenna. If you want to retail it out it needs to look and drive near perfect with those miles. I would be suprised if you get $1000 cash out of it selling it yourself. Try shopping the car around to some of the corner used car lots (that have the 10 year old very high mileage cars) and get cash bids from several of them to see what it really is worth. (post back the results here)

As to the Volvo, try asking a couple/few hundred bucks and limit the ad to saying runs, drives, turns, and stops good.

    BTW where are they located?
Around here the Century would bring private sale in the $500-$700 range.

Wow. I am so relieved to find a source of intelligent information geared towards the consumer.....thanks again!!!

Ought to be worth 4-500 dollars. I would park it on a busy street with a sign in the wondow.

I never knew one of those 4 cyl Buicks could possibly last that long!

You CAN sell your Nissan!! Any licensed car dealer can buy it from you, or take it in trade. What will it cost you? Its simple. Call the 800 number on your last NMAC bill. Follow the prompts, and ask for the payoff on your car. They will give you a payoff that is good until 07/XX/04. Your cost to get out of your lease is that payoff number less whatever the dealer will pay you for the car (i.e: trade-in allowance).

The key point is: The dealer HAS to buy the car or take it in trade... If you let him just turn it back in to NMAC, then your liability could be quite large. This is a simple deal and is done all the time. Now, if you just want to get rid of the car, that is more complicated... It is pretty much as Mathias described above.. You have to find someone to sell it to, pay sales tax, etc.. Chances are you will be out much more money that way.

Hey Terry. I'm here in Washington D.C. visiting family. My uncle was showing off his new Honda that he got a "great deal" on. As soon as I saw it, I knew why. I'll start with the good news. 2000 Accord EX (so all the goodies) with 35k miles, Automatic, interior looks pretty clean, exterior doesn't look bad from half a block away. Now the bad news...non-factory stereo, extensive body work both sides (very obvious), rear bumper has probably been replaced, total repaint in a non-factory color. Original color is the Honda Silvery-beige color. The door jams, under the hood, etc. are still this color. The new color is kind of a cross between gold and mustard. I'm sure he didn't get it from a dealer because I can't see any dealer touching this car with a 20 ft. pole. How bad? Just curious.

    Thanks,

Thinking of taking my vehicle to Carmax to see what they'll give me. Any ideas as to how close Carmax would be to what my vehicle would go for at auction? We've already discussed my vehicle here, a stupid '98 Mustang, and the trade-in Terry came up with was $4-4.5K.

Best thing to do is just take it Carmax and see. It's hard to predict where they will peg your car and since there is no fee for this service I would just take it in there and find out for sure.

I have a 1994 E320 black sedan. I am the second owner. The overall body is in good shape. some minor scratches and dings. It has 210,201 miles. What should I expect to get, if I trade it in?

that's not one I'd consider trading at all. There is absolutely NO market (in the car dealer world) for a 200k mile ANYTHING. Get it detailed, put a for sale sign on it, park it in an obvious place, and good luck - no reason you couldn't get $3k-3500 from a private buyer, but as a trade, it's a $500-1000 car.

Trade side, not much, unless it is absolutely perfect in every way and fully serviced since day one at the selling dealer: in which case the servicing/selling dealer might give a little more on trade (because someone who works there might want it). Maybe $500-$1000 on a push. Most any dealer would immediately send it off to auction and be saddled with the transportation costs and auction fees to get rid of it.

Find some corner lot that specializes in high mileage similar cars and get a cash bid from them. This will likely be higher than the trade in, lower than you could private party sell it, but much faster and easier than a private party sale. $2500-$3000 should be your asking private party price for a quick sale.

Wow - that is quite a link!

Father-in-law is interested in buying one of these again (had two previously).

Also, here is the VIN: JT8CH32Y5Y1002888.

Can you tell me if there is anything to be aware of?

Thanks Much - And Happy 4th to you and everyone else.

Checked with the guy that had the 2001 Cavalier on price. He is asking what he owes on the car.........a WHOPPING $7000. I had to bite my tongue. Just didn't say anything.

Checked the car over real well. 2001 Cavalier silver/gray, 60k miles, am/fm....no cassette, spoiler, good tires, a/c, auto, cracked front bumper. $7k is WAY too rich for my blood. OUCH

BTW, Clam Gulch was beautiful.......I love the ocean, plan on spending most of next summer down in that area......that is if hubby buys me a travel trailer.

Last week, I had a 2002 Cavalier Coupe with 45k miles, bright taxicab yellow on my parking lot at the plant with a big "For Sale" sign. I checked with HR to make sure that it was NOT an employee. I called the turkey and gave him an hour to move the car or we would have it towed.

Asking price ... $9800. Not in THIS lifetime.

YEOWCH........that's a pretty hefty price for one of them little dudes.

My mom's 96 Cavalier ended up on a used car lot.......asking price is $2500. NOT IN A MILLION YEARS!! Car has 208k on it and a bad head gasket.

there is a bit difference between edmunds and kbb, which one is more accurate, for my car, it's about 2500 dollars of difference in trade in value....does carmax give as much as edmunds trade in value?
