I'm not a car dealer, so I don't know the value of every used car as some on this board do. But I'm amazed by the people that post here about how they just HAVE to pay big $$ for some really high-mileage vehicle or other, & are worried that it will "get away". How many buyers do you think there are for a 2001 Ford truck with 82K miles for $24,000? I did the ##'s here on Edmunds with the info that I knew......$24,000? Couldn't you buy a really low-mileage one for that (or less)? I'm thinking, mid to upper teens for that 82K miles truck. And good luck trading it in someday when it's got even more miles. But I'll defer to others here who can really tell you what it's worth.

I'm a little surprised that people would even try to trade very old, high mileage cars. It's so easy to sell them privately! There's quite a market for older cars, especially if they are running well, at least in rural areas like where I live. Especially people who do pizza or mail deliveries want old cars they can run into the ground and then throw away or sell for parts. I have always had a much easier time selling old beaters than newer cars. I have some experience because I have raised three teenagers who all had to buy cars with their own money, so they couldn't afford much (another market for the high milers!). Generally we would get cars cheap, they would run them hard for 3 or 4 years, and then I would sell them for what I could get. I just sold a 1990 manual Mazda 626 with 160000 miles, no air, no parking brake, and families of squirrels had apparently lived inside, for $900.

retail-wise, the truck isnt off by much, if any. dont forget, its also a diesel, and they not only hold their value, but have a life-expectancy of about 300k miles. heck...warranty companies and banks will even go for one over 100k miles.

             Depends on where you live - Location.?

           If ~ this bad boy is clean, all the service, waaay deep in round things, a pampered puppy and a great history .. then $24,0 is a "fair" price, even with 82 rounds, they do Big miles (properly serviced) .. it's a Dsl 4x4 Lariat Crew Cab, can't get em' can't find em' ... dealer probably paid the the super high $20ish low/mid $21ish figure, then commenced to spend some money ........ sorry, you will have to repost all that Jeep stuff ..

Nobody! I just see that whole thing way too much, and if we're here to do a service for these folks, I want them to understand WHY we tell them what we tell them.

People get all mad at you, djhudka, audia8q (rich), mathias or me because we're honest, but haven't taken the time to give them a three paragraph post that's all warm and fuzzy, let's have a group hug and a cappucino and understand "why" the appraiser feels the way he does...

Gag me!

Maybe I'll post that once a week for the new folks to read and they won't get bent out of shape when they're not offered retail book for their Intrepid with 130,000 miles and three accidents under its belt!

Thank you! I guess I lucked out then, they are offering me 1,000 trade in on the van and I think I have been offered a good deal on a 04 chevy malibu maxx LT. They are offering 1000 less than TMV and I haven even talked them out of the $345.00 "document fee" I guess when you are trying to deal with buy a car it is stressful. I didn't know what the "gee whiz" meant. Thanks again.

yes, the caddy actually has 210,000 miles. It is still a pretty nice car and other than the problems I described it would be a good car for someone. The biggest problem is that it is a $300 repair car, whatever is wrong it is at least 300 dollars to repair.

Sounds like a good deal on the Malibu - make sure you're getting all of the rebates - looks like there's a $4,000 rebate, or a $1,000 rebate and special financing.

The Cadillac? Clean it up and sell it if you need to - you might get $750 or $1,000 depending on where you live.

Again, it depends on the market that you are in. When I lived in the innercity, I could sell ANY car that was in good running condition UNDER $1500 regardless of the miles. I would park the car in front of one of those "work here pay today" temp agencies and have my phone ringing off the hook. Average sale would take between two hours to two days max depending on how long I gave the individual to raise the $$CASH$$. Ditto when I lived near a campus that was geared toward working class students.

Out here in the Chicago suburbs, forget about it. No parent is going to put Biff or Buffy in a car with more than 50k miles on it. I see most younger folks (even those delivering pizzas) driving either 1) new Korean cars, 2) almost new luxury cars (2 year old Lexus are pretty popular here, or 3) new sporty models. The line that I always hear from parents is "my Biff can't handle the $300 repairs that you have when you drive a used car. But Mom and Dad seem to be able to afford the $400-600 monthly car payment plus all the added insurance costs.

The older cars around here sit for a few weeks (or months) until some Mexican laborer can scrape up the cash to pay for it.

Yeah, this is my problem. I live in a suburb of -- let's just call it a major metro area in upstate NY -- and it's the same attitude toward my '95 T-Bird LX. Even though it has just 72K miles and is nice overall condition (a few small scratches, plenty of tread on the tires and no major mechanical problems of any sort), there's this snot-face attitude I get from people who'd rather buy nearly-new Blazers for their kids (or themselves).

So that's my dilemma...try to sell this nice-but-old car myself (which will probably involve having it sit in my driveway for a new months -- hopefully not into the winter)...or just trade it to the Chevy dealer (for an 04 Malibu) or Honda (04 Accord). If I have to keep plates and insurance on the old car for more than a few months, that's going to eat into what I'd gain by not trading it. Agree?

I live in Tulsa...formerly of New Orleans...I am still going through withdrawls.

I know you are right on the price but I think I am gonna wait and see what rotates on the lot for a couple of weeks. I am still trying to figure out this market and this dealer but he seems to move a bunch of units. I see many a Lex on the road and there is not another dealer until you hit Oklahoma City.

I,too live in an upstate NY suburb and have sold several 10+ year old cars. My experience is that when priced right they sell immediately. The only problem I ever had was a 12 year old 240Z that was truly a piece of junk. Thankfully a dealer took it as a trade.

Well, I have learned something here.....not to shoot my mouth off too much, or rely too much on the Edmunds ##'s (they had wholesale on that truck at about $16K).
Glad I CYA (CMA?) a bit by stating "I defer to the experts on the board as to value". And I could have been influenced by my buying a Chevy Diesel pick-up in 1979.......major bummer :-(

             99 Blazer 2dr LS, its a 4wd, color is good for the area, V6, auto and the miles are way low for the year ... if the sneakers are deep, no repaints, no Ted Bundy interior, no click click in the 4wd, service is 100%, looks feels and drives like an 02 ... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $5's, maybe "might" find a dealer to go towards $6,0, If your lucky .. even with low miles, 2dr SUV's just don't do well in your area, or any other area for that matter ......

The PLOT thickens!! Here is the latest as of today. I got the bank draft from the credit union this am for the Ford Truck (got the Jeep thing figured out that it will be a wash as the dealer is "giving" (note the quotes) us $4500.00 and we owe $4300, sensitive subject. Ok back to the credit union, as she was giving me the draft she said oh by the way we only finance used vehicles for up to 75000 miles!!! GRRRRRRRR!! Now I am ready to purchase the truck (which has 82,000) , my credit beacon score is 894--should I ditch the credit union (at 4.9 percent interest) and go out there with the dealer's banks and see waht they have availiable as far as interest rates???? Or should I just say forget this particular truck (even though it is a seemingly great deal--I am still waiting on the car fax report) and just keep on looking??? ARRRGGGHHHHH!!! I hate this!!!

If your beacon score is that good, just ask the dealer what they can do.. Tell them you have an offer for financing and ask if they can beat it.. If they are selling a $20K+ truck, I'm sure they have financing avenues. They will be motivated.

Well, I need your advise. Should I keep as a 3rd car -- or sell. My 1994 E320 is a white MBZ with pretty good care and all the service you can think of for its 143,000 miles. And that's the trouble. Everyone says that once you get up here -- the car is worth little ( a few thou') but there are also thousands of stories of well cared for MBZ's going for hundreds of thousands of miles....

What's it really worth? (White, auto, 6cyl, CD, chrome wheels, (grey)leather, sunroof, all electric, climate control, all records ??

Do I sell? or keep it as a nice beater??

I did some research and it looks like the beacon score range is from 300-850. Maybe the poster mean 794?

768 probably puts you in the top 5-10%. It doesn't take much to drop you below 750.

768 is as have as I have seen it .. that was what the dealer told us it was when we bought the Odyssey 3 months ago. The time before that I think it was 742 ... who cares. As long as I can get the best interest rates I'm happy.

I was feeling pretty proud of my 812 Beacon until I had two people last week with higher beacons. One was an 830 and the other 1n 832.

Seeing an 800 beacon used to be very rare but for some reason we have had a lot of them recently.

I don't know my score now, but in Jan 03 it was 80x. The finance manager remarked on it after running my credit; he said it was very unusual to have such a high number without having had a car loan. But I had recently refinanced and opened a HELOC.

I think you get an 894 if you buy the Brooklyn bridge on credit and pay it off on time...

I am in the mortgage industry and I too am beginning to see higher FICO's in the last year or so. My guess is during the last refi boom, most people cashed out equity to pay off their consumer debt. Hence, their debt load according to the "mysterious" Fair Issac model is lower and the scores are going up. That is until they charge up the cards again. Or, buy a new car now that their monthly payment has dropped!

but going with the dealer should get you good results with anything over a 700 - also, why not look at a new truck for $40k instead of dropping $25k on one with 82k miles? I know diesels run forever, yada, yada, yada, but dropping that kind of change on a rig that banks won't finance tells me to look at a less miled version, or a new one.

75k, but most CU's don't know Diesels from Stromboli .. show the them the 100k warranty and if need be, go over her/his head .. if all else fails, "bluff" your way at the dealer and see what he can do, I'm sure they can get inside of a half-point of the strike zone .....

It's a 96 2 door, four wheel drive, automatic, AC, AM-FM-tape, PW, PL. 75K miles. Red with gray interior. In great shape and needs no service or repair, but the windshield has a six inch crack along the top on the passenger side.

I'm in central Ohio, he didnt have any luck trying to sell it in his small town the past month. He's asking $7000, I think he needs to drop the price to 6 asking and take mid 5's, what do you guys think?

I don't know about Ohio but around here, 2 door Explorers are saleproof. That is probably the main problem.

Central Ohio? Ever heard of Washington Court House? The co. I used to work for had its headquarters there until they moved to Columbus.

             Ok, we are lookin' at a 00 GLS 4dr Hoon-die, we have 43 low klicks, we got the no-sale blue thing going on, we have the automatic and we have the power pack with limited drive by's ... If the round things are deep, service is 100%, no paint by numbers, no Jack the Ripper interior .. then trade side, in and around the mid/high $2's, maybe the low low low low $3's if it needs -0- ... the low miles save this one.

I am looking to trade my '04 EB Expedition in Charlotte, NC. It has just shy of 11,000 miles on it. Of course it has leather, 6 disc changer with premium sound, power seats, rear air, steering wheel mounted controls for temp/stereo. It also has keyless entry, and lighted running boards. It is 2WD and 4.6L engine. It has powerfold rear and is Red metallic (burgandy)with tan leather interior. Naturally it is clean as I usually ride alone or with my hubby on the weekend. What can I expect on trade?

I realize my ignorance is showing, but is that the last of the I6's or the first of the 90-degree V6 engines? I believe it's the latter, and the last year of the W-124 model. The last of the "real" Benzes, before they got all frilly, fancy, and fragile.

I don't know how to say this in a nice, Edmunds-user-agreement-conforming, non-soliciting way, but: any chance you're reasonably close to mid-MI?

As far as pricing; I'll leave it up to Terry. But it's definitely all in the condition for an 11-year-old Mercedes Benz...

Bose Radio, CD, etc.
Looks like a 2002, some scratches on rear bumper, otherwise very nice.
Leather is extra nice, no rips.
Tires are about 50%.
Everything appears to work.
It is nice, but they are asking (Way too much) $15,900.
What is a realistic price?

                Depending on where you live, the color and the hail damage - we have a 02 Crown Vic LX with a sport pack, leather guts and 29k short miles ...... if it's clean, the rubber is deep and the hail damage isn't deeper, then trade side - in and around the high $10's, low low low low low $11's ... probably knock off a ghee whiz for the hail damage, so figure the high $9's low $10's (depending on the damage) .. you don't think your going to get Big money from a Bimmer dealer do you.? they're too busy being a "BMW" dealer, and all your going to do is get their lot all dirty with that ol' Vic that will run 150/180k .l.o.l....
