In other words, what a dealer can pay for a car identicle to your car by going to auction. That, my uncouth friend, is what a real-world trade-in value is!

terry and i disagree on a few things, namely the theoretical pros vs. cons of leasing. but when im unsure of a car's value, he is the one to call, hands down.
case in point, about 3 weeks ago, i had a friend trading in a rare car, and even my used car manager didnt have an idea of the value. terry helped me out, and we made the deal.
so tell me...if he was purposefully trying to devalue the used car market, how is it that my friend was happy with the value?

we have an almoshhht 4 year old taurushhh with lowishhh milesh. no she-dee, 1/2 shoesh left, driven down a gravel road.
if i were REALLY drunk, i might put $5500 into it, plush a couple hunshkies for detail and maintenansh.
if i were shhhober, the realishhtic # would probably be around the $4500ish figure, MAYBE the $5k range.
by the time you get to the BHPH lot, there are a few middle-men involved, and i wouldnt doubt he has around $5k-$5.5k in it.
the only (hic) hiccup i can see is that the BHPH guy makes TONS more by financing the car, and doesnt have much incentive to sell it for cash.
if he doesnt grab the money, go to a new ford dealer. they get these in off lease CONSTANTLY, and $6500 shouldnt be difficult to acheive.
you know what funny, is when the consumer is on the other side of the fence (and I'm a consumer), when trying to buy a car, "I know you paid $xx,xxx wholesale, so I know I can buy it for $xx,xxxx and you'll still make money, etc..." amazing how things are turned around depending upon whether your buying or selling... People don't understand its a business and most don't understand business....

Also, with a BHPH lot, there's no warranty, and no chance of buying a real extended warranty, except for the fly-by-night policies some BHPH dealers charge way too much for.
Although it sounds OK, you simply can't judge a book by its cover when looking at a BHPH lot.

I have a 2004 Toyota Matrix that I purchased 13 months ago as a commuter vehicle when I moved 45 miles away from my office. The vehicle is only used to drive to/from work mainly on the freeway as well as visiting clients offices in town. I wasn't able to utilize Edmunds used car valuator because they only list up to the 2003 Matrix.
Here are the vehicles specs: 2004 Toyota Matrix XR. Automatic transmission (28,975 miles), White exterior, gray cloth interior, CD player, power windows/mirrors, fog lights, cruise control, anti-lock brakes, condition: clean to outstanding, closer to outstanding. There was very minor cosmetic damage to the front bumper when someone backed into the vehicle, but this was repaired and looks perfect.
I am interested in what I could/should expect a dealer to offer me for the trade-in value. I am interested in buying a $30,000-ish new vehicle (possible a passat or other sedan).

Dealer upgraded to CPO and countered my $19.5 with $21. Next we throw in an early lease buyout. They peg the difference in my lease buyout to trade value at $1,700 - which matches fairly well with your guidance and my research.
The latest offer from the dealer is $21.9k all in. This seems pretty close to the right price, what do you think?

Went to the Ford dealer on Tuesday and got $600 Trade-In - went for it and got a 2005 Escape! You were right on the money! (Going back to Carmax over $200 wasn't worth it for me)
BTW, my car is in excellent condition, has never been in an accident, has the original paint, never had a smoker in it, and is very clean.

List the miles, color, condition of tires, state of tune, and your location and we'll give you an idea of what you should really expect.
Since it's a 1994, the miles are probably over 100k, so read my post #20851 first - if it IS over on miles, retail is your best bet, hands-down.
We are buying a 2004 Town and Country LX(extended) 8000 miles with quad seating and rear air along with the standard PW,cd roof rack,antilock,traction. Original had it 8 months and decided they want Sto and GO seating on 2005's...
Price after a few trips back..if we take delivery by SAt so they get it in July's numbers:
18300-3800(trade) Final price with trade $14,500.
I couldnt get them to budge any more.

The bad: It's been in a booboo and hasframe damage to the front end. The repair looks prett good though BUT they had another slight mishap with the front bumper and it's slightly askew on the passenger side. Could probably be fixed for a couple hundred $$$.
So what's this sled worth in Atlanta?
The thing is, when you find out about a serious flaw in a car that isn't totally obvious, you have to pass.
Reason being, the dealer (or private owner) is unlikely to discount the vehicle appropriately and will simply wait for a less astute buyer.
Understandable especially in a properly repaired car...

Terry can give you a good number but you need to be aware that G20's aren't exactly the hottest things out there. A lot of people think they are not much more than a glorified Sentra and that they don't sell well.
Still, there is a seat for every butt and who knows?

is what I am paying on. I have 38 payments left at 490 per month...UGH. I was foolish and traded my 97 Volvo 850 because I'd put 3k in repairs (new turbo at 60k) into it back almost two years ago. I ended up rolling 4k into this new vehicle. I don't think I am upside down too much as I did get a great deal on this car, dealer demo had 9k on it when I got it. This is my story...
I want to reduce my monthly payment by at least 250 a month. Truthfully I want to pay off cc's. I am considering leasing, but don't want to enter a lease upside down. Am I stupid to even consider leasing?? This is not a situation where I'm broke. I can make the payments, but there is not much left over at the end of the month. Husband wants me to keep the car as it rated high on the safety scale and we have kids. Brother says to pay the big bucks now and have a car for the next 8 years...I put maybe 10 to 12k a year on my car...so it's at almost 31k now and it's a 2001. I went into the dealer where I got it a few months ago and tried trade it in on something less expensive. My sales person couldn't have been less interested in getting me any type of deal. I would've had to come up with 2k to get out of my car and into a POS. I tried to sell it on my own, had NO calls at all. Only advertised it for a week two months ago.
Am I being totally unrealistic? Should I stay where I am...pay it off and be broke for the next 3 years or trade it in on a lease or buy a cheaper car???? Thanks...

Frame damage ..? like the front clip has been out.? or we talkin' about pulling and squaring the frame and a repaired unibody ..? .. if it's door #2, then we got some major problems in River City .. it's a 00 and the miles are low for the year, we have that el' manual guy stuck between the seats, color is ok, but we have that one minor detail: La'frame Da'mage .. in any language, it's a notta good thing .. the problem is, somebody somewhere will pick this one apart - so without seeing it .. trade side, maybe the $7ish /$8ish range, might get a wholesaler to drop the $9ish figure into it, the problem is, whats somebody going to do with it ...?

We have a 97 2wd Expedition (XLT.?) with 93 big klicks, we have the moo cows for the seats, we have the big V8 (*it better* have the 3rd seat & rear breeze) we have all the service records .... no black, no dark blue and if it's nice, clean, "shows" like a 01, drives like an 02, deep round things, and doesn't have the famous "I backed over my Mothers Honda" rear bumper .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $5's, maybe the low low low $6's if ya got a pair of those Tony Lama boots ..... down retail Rd, wonderful 5 liner Ad, superb detail, service records hanging from the mirror, $8,900 *asking* and kick it silly at the first $7,5/$8,5 ........

Drive it like we stole it?
It would've been a fun ride. Could've had some fun, gotten some tickets, then dumped it before something broke on it. But, it wasn't meant to be. I was 1 day too late ...
There was damage to the core support. No unibody damage to the best of my knowledge.
I've decided I'd rather go fishing then car shopping......got up at 2 am, cooked breakfast, left at 3 am, drove 3 hours, was fishing by 6:30 am and at our limit by 10 am. Now THAT is the BEST way to spend a morning. Already have 1500 miles on the Focus from our fishing adventures.
Car has 79,000 highway miles, dark grey/black leather, no sunroof or autostick, otherwise the LHS came with all the toys. Rubber has between 7-9K miles on it. Car looks and drives great, everything works. Whats it worth going down retail road?
