I understand being unhappy with the valuations that Terry gives. However, they are accurate. When was the last time that KBB wrote a check for a car? Terry is in the business. He writes checks for the cars. He knows what they are worth.

others covered the rest, so i'm just going to tell you to get the heck out! 2 days registered on Edmunds and you think you got the number of a guy that has been here for years? Again, get out. Similar to what the soup [non-permissible content removed] would say, "No appraisal for you!"

But one last thing before the door hits you in the rear, I also wanted to point out that you are referring to selling prices and averages and all that useless garbage while Terry is telling you auction prices. In other words, what a dealer can pay for a car identicle to your car by going to auction. That, my uncouth friend, is what a real-world trade-in value is!

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

ok, im going to make this quick, since you are obviously a troll looking for attention.

terry and i disagree on a few things, namely the theoretical pros vs. cons of leasing. but when im unsure of a car's value, he is the one to call, hands down.

case in point, about 3 weeks ago, i had a friend trading in a rare car, and even my used car manager didnt have an idea of the value. terry helped me out, and we made the deal.

so tell me...if he was purposefully trying to devalue the used car market, how is it that my friend was happy with the value?

dietcoke1, you come in here bashing when you have NO idea of what you are talking about. Take your car to Edmunds or KBB and ask them for a check and see what you get. Terry knows the market WAY better than you unless you are a dealer with more than 10 years experience, which I doubt. Oh, and its easy to throw stones when you hide behind the privacy of the internet. Feel free to disagree if you wish, thats what this is all about, but don't blast someone just because you don't like the answer. BTW, Terry has been right on in three car deals he helped me with for myself, my daughter, and my mother.

Not only is Terry helpful, providing honest real-world information to people in need - but he does it in an irreverent and entertaining way that is perhaps over your head.

Maybe there is another board where you would feel more at home - have a look...

thats it! i couldnt quite put my finger on it before, but i agree...terry's humor is just not low-brow enough for dietcoke.

    Terry,

Please help me on a retail figure for my mother in law. Her car '98 Corrola totalled in an accident so now the is looking at something a little bigger. She has $6500 to spend and does not want a car payment.

She saw this on BHPH lot.

    2001 Ford Taurus SE sedan
    38000 miles
    blue w/grey cloth interior
    am/fm tape
    alloys
    tires are at 50% remaining
    several small paint chips
no accidents on carfax and paint looked all original.
Dealer in Philly are is asking $7595. Any chance of getting it for $6500?

     Thanks again!

PS;I think dietcoke needs to have a Budwiser and lighten up you, truly do a great sevice and have helped me enourmously in the past.

Just like all of the other trolls who have come and gone.

    Hope so anyway!

Could it be that dietcoke1 is hopelessly upside down on his '02 M3 & thus must believe that it's worth more than he owes on the note? I detected a note of desperation in his last post.
  • bowke28bowke28 Member Posts: 2,185
im a little tipshy, sho letsh shee if terry and i agree...

we have an almoshhht 4 year old taurushhh with lowishhh milesh. no she-dee, 1/2 shoesh left, driven down a gravel road.

if i were REALLY drunk, i might put $5500 into it, plush a couple hunshkies for detail and maintenansh.

if i were shhhober, the realishhtic # would probably be around the $4500ish figure, MAYBE the $5k range.

by the time you get to the BHPH lot, there are a few middle-men involved, and i wouldnt doubt he has around $5k-$5.5k in it.

the only (hic) hiccup i can see is that the BHPH guy makes TONS more by financing the car, and doesnt have much incentive to sell it for cash.

if he doesnt grab the money, go to a new ford dealer. they get these in off lease CONSTANTLY, and $6500 shouldnt be difficult to acheive.

... as i read that, I almost spit my Diet Coke all over my screen.

you know what funny, is when the consumer is on the other side of the fence (and I'm a consumer), when trying to buy a car, "I know you paid $xx,xxx wholesale, so I know I can buy it for $xx,xxxx and you'll still make money, etc..." amazing how things are turned around depending upon whether your buying or selling... People don't understand its a business and most don't understand business....

    outta here.

    Not to mention..

TMV is not trade-in value.. It is the average sale price for the car bought from a dealer.

I'm the the Philly area, too, and STRONG advice is to forget about buying anything from a buy here pay here lot - those guys get their vehicles at fire sales, essentially, and just because CARFAX is clean (remember it sometimes takes 60-90 days for something bad to show up), yoy can duplicate that car at many dealerships or private sellers.

Also, with a BHPH lot, there's no warranty, and no chance of buying a real extended warranty, except for the fly-by-night policies some BHPH dealers charge way too much for.

Although it sounds OK, you simply can't judge a book by its cover when looking at a BHPH lot.

Feel free to drop me a line for some direction on used cars in the Philly area. I know the places to avoid...

What would the trade in value be for a 2004 Civic coupe EX with 8400 miles and automatic transmission.Color Gray with black interior and in mint condition.

    Thanks Lenny

Hi, my first time posting here, so please forgive me if I err in anyway.

I have a 2004 Toyota Matrix that I purchased 13 months ago as a commuter vehicle when I moved 45 miles away from my office. The vehicle is only used to drive to/from work mainly on the freeway as well as visiting clients offices in town. I wasn't able to utilize Edmunds used car valuator because they only list up to the 2003 Matrix.

Here are the vehicles specs: 2004 Toyota Matrix XR. Automatic transmission (28,975 miles), White exterior, gray cloth interior, CD player, power windows/mirrors, fog lights, cruise control, anti-lock brakes, condition: clean to outstanding, closer to outstanding. There was very minor cosmetic damage to the front bumper when someone backed into the vehicle, but this was repaired and looks perfect.

I am interested in what I could/should expect a dealer to offer me for the trade-in value. I am interested in buying a $30,000-ish new vehicle (possible a passat or other sedan).

    Looking forward to your response!!

    Thank you,

    Max

    Terry,

Need your help on the trade-in value of the following:

2002 Honda Odyssey EX with leather
    Color: Dark Red
    Miles: 28,000
    Inside: Great Shape
Outside: The usual assortment of door dings (about 4)
    Service: Up to date
    Location: Houston

P.S. Thanks for the quote on my 4-Runner from a few months ago - the dealer hit it at the exact number you advised! Give that man a cigar!
  • bdevil81bdevil81 Member Posts: 22
    Terry,

I'm close to terms on the following (which you valued in a previous response +/- $19.5k)

    2000 Z3/2.3/5 speed/premium pkge/leather/CD
    28k miles
    Bronze/tan top and seats
    75% new matching tires
clean and in good condition in South Florida
    $22k asking without CPO

Dealer upgraded to CPO and countered my $19.5 with $21. Next we throw in an early lease buyout. They peg the difference in my lease buyout to trade value at $1,700 - which matches fairly well with your guidance and my research.

The latest offer from the dealer is $21.9k all in. This seems pretty close to the right price, what do you think?

    Thanks

His inflated idea of how much his car is worth matches up well with his inflated opinion of himself.

Terry should open a PayPal account for donations.

aka, I don't know if it was that picture, but that Dodge Ram looked *rough*. I'd think a $100 pro detail would do wonders...

    Terry or anyone else??

GT version, 2 door coupe, dark green, automatic, A/C, power window, locks, and driver's seat, remote entry, Am/fm/cd, rear spoiler, overhead console, great condition, never been wrecked, 104k miles, four new tires, new brakes, new battery.

1998 Ford Escort ZX2 - okay don't laugh - 2D Hot Coupe, Manual, A/C (but blows hot!); Am/fm/cassette; after-market 12 disc changer; cruise control; tilt wheel; remote entry (not power locks); power steering; 109k miles; two previous accidents - front end - repaired very well; paint decent, some scratches though; glass in good shape; probably needs new tires & brake pads.
Looking to sell it to Carmax for cash, not trade-in?

                   ==========================================

I'm laughing I'm laughing .. whats this heep worth.? .. it's a 98, it blows hot air, it's a handshaker, it's a coupe, it's got 110 klicks, it needs new stoppers, rubber and it's been used as target practice (twice) by the al-Qaeda .... other than that, it's like: Brand New.! .. I dunno, $500/$900.?

                                              Terry.

    _+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Went to Carmax today and got a quote of $800 - i'm mostly pleased - was expecting closer to $500.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    One more follow up Terry!
Went to the Ford dealer on Tuesday and got $600 Trade-In - went for it and got a 2005 Escape! You were right on the money! (Going back to Carmax over $200 wasn't worth it for me)

I've done my research and I know I can buy the new car I want near invoice. Of course the unknown is the how much will I get for trading in my G20. I've checked the retail, wholesale, and private party value on Edmunds and some other sites. Doesn't the wholesale value mean what the dealer would give you for the car? I've spoken to a few dealers about it and they say they take about $1200 off of the wholesale value to make up for getting the car ready to sell. Isn't that why there's a large difference between the wholesale and retail value? Am I getting jerked around?

BTW, my car is in excellent condition, has never been in an accident, has the original paint, never had a smoker in it, and is very clean.

It was just dirty, its very nice when its clean. Poor thing had just come off the logging road when that picture was taken. It cleans up like new. Right now with all the rain and mud all 3 of our vehicles look rough.

I don't know if I want to respond, considering your opening statement of "dealer bull", especially since you're asking dealers to help you!

List the miles, color, condition of tires, state of tune, and your location and we'll give you an idea of what you should really expect.

Since it's a 1994, the miles are probably over 100k, so read my post #20851 first - if it IS over on miles, retail is your best bet, hands-down.

We are buying a 2004 Town and Country LX(extended) 8000 miles with quad seating and rear air along with the standard PW,cd roof rack, antilock, traction. Original had it 8 months and decided they want Sto and GO seating on 2005's...
Price after a few trips back..if we take delivery by SAt so they get it in July's numbers:
18300-3800(trade) Final price with trade $14,500.
I couldnt get them to budge any more.
    Good? bad? or fair?

Don't you all question the people who order a double cheeseburger and a large fry then order a Diet Coke to go with it?

He was WAY outta line and I would be very surprised if he ever shows his keyboard in here again after the beating you all gave :)

Terry, you provide a great service. I have worked for a dealer for 6 years and I still come to you for advice ... which brings me to this ...

    2000 Saab Viggen 4dr hatch
    manual transmission
    56,000 miles
    Silver exterior with black leather
The good: Overall it's very clean inside, it has new tires, and it's a Viggen
The bad: It's been in a booboo and hasframe damage to the front end. The repair looks prett good though BUT they had another slight mishap with the front bumper and it's slightly askew on the passenger side. Could probably be fixed for a couple hundred $$$.

So what's this sled worth in Atlanta?
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
    Forget it.
The thing is, when you find out about a serious flaw in a car that isn't totally obvious, you have to pass.
Reason being, the dealer (or private owner) is unlikely to discount the vehicle appropriately and will simply wait for a less astute buyer.
Understandable especially in a properly repaired car...

I wasn't going to respond but I didn't like the "dealer bull" stuff either.

Terry can give you a good number but you need to be aware that G20's aren't exactly the hottest things out there. A lot of people think they are not much more than a glorified Sentra and that they don't sell well.

Still, there is a seat for every butt and who knows?

    After all, YOU bought it!

Well....all I drink is Diet Coke, and have since it came out in 1984...about a 6-pack a day for the last 20 years while I'm working, mix a little sumthin' sumthin' with it when I'm at the karaoke bar - I should have Coca Cola stock options by now - I guess that makes me a whacko, but I don't own an M3...

    I could, but I don't...

"Well....all I drink is Diet Coke"

    My point exactly :)

I personally am a Mountain Dew freak. Although the occasional ice cold Coke never hurt anybody. It was a lifesaver when I had heartburn while pregnant.

mountain dew. 3 12-packs a week at home, and 3 20 oz. bottles a day at work. i quit drinking it the 1st of the year, and i feel sooo much better!

Ommended to me....So I am BUMPING this message back up... awaiting an experts opinion...

    2001 Volvo v70 w 31k mint shape 100000k warranty by berlingirl Jul 28, 2004 (12:38 am)
is what I am paying on. I have 38 payments left at 490 per month...UGH. I was foolish and traded my 97 Volvo 850 because I'd put 3k in repairs (new turbo at 60k) into it back almost two years ago. I ended up rolling 4k into this new vehicle. I don't think I am upside down too much as I did get a great deal on this car, dealer demo had 9k on it when I got it. This is my story...

I want to reduce my monthly payment by at least 250 a month. Truthfully I want to pay off cc's. I am considering leasing, but don't want to enter a lease upside down. Am I stupid to even consider leasing?? This is not a situation where I'm broke. I can make the payments, but there is not much left over at the end of the month. Husband wants me to keep the car as it rated high on the safety scale and we have kids. Brother says to pay the big bucks now and have a car for the next 8 years...I put maybe 10 to 12k a year on my car...so it's at almost 31k now and it's a 2001. I went into the dealer where I got it a few months ago and tried trade it in on something less expensive. My sales person couldn't have been less interested in getting me any type of deal. I would've had to come up with 2k to get out of my car and into a POS. I tried to sell it on my own, had NO calls at all. Only advertised it for a week two months ago.

Am I being totally unrealistic? Should I stay where I am...pay it off and be broke for the next 3 years or trade it in on a lease or buy a cheaper car???? Thanks...

in case you missed the first time...thanks again.

Now, back to our regular scheduled programming .......

           ==================================

          ** 2000 Saab Viggen 4dr hatch
    manual transmission
    56,000 miles
    Silver exterior with black leather

So what's this sled worth in Atlanta?

           =============================

Frame damage ..? like the front clip has been out.? or we talkin' about pulling and squaring the frame and a repaired unibody ..? .. if it's door #2, then we got some major problems in River City .. it's a 00 and the miles are low for the year, we have that el' manual guy stuck between the seats, color is ok, but we have that one minor detail: La'frame Da'mage .. in any language, it's a notta good thing .. the problem is, somebody somewhere will pick this one apart - so without seeing it .. trade side, maybe the $7ish /$8ish range, might get a wholesaler to drop the $9ish figure into it, the problem is, whats somebody going to do with it ...?

I will be trying to sell or trade:
    1997 Ford Expedition, 2WD
    93k miles
    5.4L V8
    Leather
    Clean
    All service records
    Austin, TX
    Thanks.

                ===================================

Another Austin city limits visitor .. are all you guys moving in, or moving out.?

We have a 97 2wd Expedition (XLT.?) with 93 big klicks, we have the moo cows for the seats, we have the big V8 (*it better* have the 3rd seat & rear breeze) we have all the service records .... no black, no dark blue and if it's nice, clean, "shows" like a 01, drives like an 02, deep round things, and doesn't have the famous "I backed over my Mothers Honda" rear bumper .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $5's, maybe the low low low $6's if ya got a pair of those Tony Lama boots ..... down retail Rd, wonderful 5 liner Ad, superb detail, service records hanging from the mirror, $8,900 *asking* and kick it silly at the first $7,5/$8,5 ........

Good luck and let me know ..!

"the problem is, whats somebody going to do with it ...?"

Drive it like we stole it? :)

It would've been a fun ride. Could've had some fun, gotten some tickets, then dumped it before something broke on it. But, it wasn't meant to be. I was 1 day too late ...

There was damage to the core support. No unibody damage to the best of my knowledge.

Talked to my favorite used car lot today, they pegged the Dodge at $16k retail, but said it wouldn't sell for that. They want to see it but would consign it for probably around $14,995 IF its nice and stands tall. They got all excited when they found out it only has 20k miles on it.

I've decided I'd rather go fishing then car shopping......got up at 2 am, cooked breakfast, left at 3 am, drove 3 hours, was fishing by 6:30 am and at our limit by 10 am. Now THAT is the BEST way to spend a morning. Already have 1500 miles on the Focus from our fishing adventures.

What about this poor guy (or gal) with the 2000 Passat w/93K miles & a blown engine? I haven't seen any responses, or did I miss it? I was going to give him/her some of my own half-*ssed advice, but short of making the car disappear in Boston Harbor, all I can do is just shake my head.......maybe if they got a good deal on it to begin with, they got their $$ worth out of it by now.....& should just try to get $500 or $1000 by putting it in the local "Want-ad" type rag. Trade in?????? Just sell it for parts, &......buy a Honda next time. (OK, I couldn't resist).

    1999 Chrysler LHS. Location: Minneapolis

Car has 79,000 highway miles, dark grey/black leather, no sunroof or autostick, otherwise the LHS came with all the toys. Rubber has between 7-9K miles on it. Car looks and drives great, everything works. Whats it worth going down retail road?
