1999 BMW 528i; 66K, no accidents
Black with tan leather. Auto. Runs really well. Brand new 19" tires (Bridgestone Potenza ~$1100) with 19" custom chrome rims (~$2100). Fully loaded. Sunroof/moonroof. 6 CD changer. All power. Memory driver seat.
>>Only issues were that the .. >>ABS control went out <<< .. , replaced with factory unit (~$940) and fixed an oil gasket leak (~$400). Otherwise no major problems.
==================================================
They are notorious for the their ABS lights and half the time, it's just the light, not the control .l.o.l..
99 528i, we have the auto, we have the a/m wheels (they need to come off, factory works, these don't) black with tan guts-no help, 66k, slider, tunes - and no kisses from the log splitters ... (Plano TX.? don't they make Tony lama's there .?) .... if it's clean, no hit or skips, no repaints, no Bonnie and Clyde interior, serviced .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $14's, maybe the low low $15's .. other than the color and the wheels, it sounds like a nice driver.
Let me know how it goes...
Terry.
Sigh.
Carry on.
Okay, I think I have found the purple sheep of the Mercedes line-up.
2001 MB C240 sedan
6-speed manual
37,000 miles
white exterior/black leather(ette?) interior
NO SUNROOF!!!
pretty basic Benz. Can't really see any special options, just usual Benz stuff without the roof.
It's a clean car inside and out with newer tires and no french fry colonies.
Bad news is the 6-speed, no roof, and it was in a minor front end collision so it has paintwork on the hood and fenders.
What's this oddball worth here in Atlanta?

These "C" class types are hangin' on for dear life even if there nice, this one has no slider, meat clever, "ette" interior, we have paintwork from the firewall forward, sounds like a bad dream .. where's the good news.? oh yeah, low miles .... trade side, in and around the $14/$15ish range .. good luck trying to sell this piece of -art.

130k on a 97 huh? .. I've seen worse, I'm a little surprised it leaks oil though, burns a little at a 130k I'm sure and those NJ winters don't help .l.o.l. ...
What can I say .. it's got tonnage for miles, it's a 97, the rubber is deep and you "say" the interior is pretty good and If the service is 110% and cold breeze .. then depending on the dealer, you will see in and around $4ish range come trade side, no one really has a home for a vehicle like this, Tall tall tall tall miles, so a dealer will send it south - if you feel comfortable with that, fine .. or you could get the Retail Rd special, it's a Lexus and someone will step up if it looks/feels/drives/handles like 60/70ker .. superb detail, finish any service, excellent 5 liner ad, all the service records blowing in the wind, $7,900 *asking* and off it goes for $6,5/$7,5 .. I have a friend that "just buys" high mileage Lexus and sells them faster than he can get em', that being said, nothing leaves his lot unless it's "jam-up" in the service department and barks at the moon on the "I can see you" side ...... if yours needs stuff and it has no eyes, then just trade-it ..
I hope this helps ...........
Terry.
Terry or anyone else, could you please help me with the value for my car as a trade-in and/or private sale? I am looking to close a deal for a new car as soon as possible and really need the help. Here are the details once again:
- Located in Burlington VT
- 2002 Ford Escape XLT V6 4WD
- 64,500 miles
- Full maintenance records
- Silver exterior, grey interior
- Running boards, towing package
- Bridgestone tires with lots of tread left
Thanks in advance for the help!
============================================
HA.! .. you thought you got missed, didn't you.?
02 Escape XLT, (auto.?) 4wd, 3.0 duratec, all the service stuff, tow pack, boards, silver and grey, the rubber is semi-great and were lookin' down the barrel of 65k ..... 65k on a 02.? your another one we need to find a better dating service for .. If the paint is nice and shiny no Van Gogh specials, no click click in the 4wd, no I carry 55 gallons of maple syrup in the back and the interior has that pancake look, if it's a nice truck, looks and feels like 25/35k ... then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $11's, "maybe" "might" on a good day (and the Blue moon still looks blue) find a dealer that will trip, fall and drop $12 in it, but with you being so deep in Galves territory, I have a feelin' you will be hard pressed to see the $11 figure .......... but let me know.
This has my interest, don't forget.!
Terry.
This gal shows here student loans and one credit card on the report.
Balance on the card never went over $1000 and shows all on time payments for two or so years.
The student loans were behind for three months and show up as the most recent credit activity on the report as being late payments, although they are only showing three months 30 days late. She does have a letter from the lending institution showing that she is completely up to date and has her four year degree and a job in her field. Job history is pretty much all burger flipping part time jobs over the last 5 years except for her first real job she took 2 months ago.
I am no expert, but to me this does not look very promising. Plus she is outside of the 6 months or one year past graduation for the new grads program from the car manufactures. Unless they extended that program to two years past graduation.
1997 Jetta GLS -- manual transmission
Green, 135,000 miles, ABS, heated seats, moon roof, electronic door locks/alarm, tires good.
Had some body work done last year due to hit-and-run (we were hit, not the other way around), but no structural damage. Clean title. Alternator and water pump need work. Interior is faded but otherwise fine.
Thanks.
Honestly, that car is not trade in material. Most any dealer will have to deduct the costs involved with getting it to the auction off the wholesale price.
Sky high miles, manual tranny, no sale green, prior body damage. I'm thinking you should ask $3,500 and take what you can get selling it yourself. Trade side, around $2,000 should do it (on a used up car like this the real condition is going to set where it falls on its value). These numbers are AFTER you get the water pump and alternator repaired.
With the car in "broke-richard" condition, worth very little on trade or private party. In the broken condition, $1,000 on trade would seem generous. Would be a tough sell on your own in the broken condition.
Probably not.
Oh well. In a few years she'll be looking for another loan with a car that is probably not paid off ...
==========================================
Is everyone ok .? .. I wish I could be a little more help, but it's hard to say what $5,000 of damage will, or won't do without looking at it - it depends on the final product .. do we have all OEM parts, did the body shop just use some fill and sand it down and shoot it, did he miss the color match, is the clearcoat right, did he shade the rear and the roof/doors right, was it shot in a nice closed paint booth by a pro, how much overspray is there, especially in spots that you "won't" see, but a pro will - stuff like that ........
*Depending on the job* .. we have low miles, it's an EX, auto, side balloons, coupe (no help), good color anywhere ~ if it's nice and clean , shot by a Gun Slinger, it's probably worth "somewhere" in and around the $6ish, to the $9ish zipcode, it's hard to say .. but, this might work better down Retail Rd, full disclaimer, all the paperwork stuck to the ceiling fan, superb detail, serviced, deep sneaks, $7,900/$10,9 *asking* .. - "I'm sure" you will know alot more after a few dealers take a look ................ thank goodness it's paid for ................
Terry.
Good luck and let me know ..!
Thanks for taking time to respond to what is, apparently, too sad a situation for anyone else to reply to...
I was afraid I'd get the reponse I did. I just have one follow-up question.
Is it possible I'd get more out of if it I traded for a new VW (believe it or not, I still like them -- I just was stupid to buy one that was neglected).
Thanks!
It doesn't matter where you try and trade it, its value is pretty much set.
If you still like the car, why not fork over the cash for a new or rebuilt engine. If you get lucky, an independent shop might be able to find one out of a low mileage wreck.
Hey, lets quite feeling sorry for yourself .. REPOST the situation and I will see what the deal is ................
Terry.
And bird22, don't feel bad, I started typing a reply back when you posted, but I couldn't find a way to make "you're screwed" sound nice. It's just damned if you do, damned if you don't, I *think* you should ditch this puppy at a salvage auction, or to an individual involved in that business.
Last year, I sold a pretty smashed-up 98 Sienna with frame damage for $1,600 cash; it was a good deal for me because I did NOT want to fix it; it was a good deal for the salvager (obviously) cuz he fixed it on his nickel and put it back on the road. What I'm trying to say; there is a market.
The problem with the "used engine swap" is, these are not 350 GM engines... in your situation, I might do it, but I have a good relationship with my indy mechanic.... and I'd still be nervous. If Terry can tell you what it would be worth *after* the fix, you can make some decisions.
Me, I don't buy cars that have had major repairs of any kind...
Good luck -Mathias
"I purchased the car used from an individual at 30K miles. Car now has 93,000 miles. I have changed the oil at every 3 to 4,000 mile interval at the dealership. Now, I'm down to 20lbs. of oil pressure and the dealership and private mechanics tell me I need another engine. The car is in good condition otherwise (in fact, it drives great and I had no idea I had a problem until the big red "STOP" showed up on my instrument panel!).
Here are the specs:
- 1.8T
- Leather
- Power moonroof
- CD changer
- Monsoon audio system
- Aluminum wheels
- heated front seats
- dark blue
- 93,000 miles"
By the way, have y'all heard Click&Clack's suggestion about the oil light?
"Maybe it should say '$5000', then people would pay attention".

As it sits, it's probably a $4,5/$5ish vehicle "in and around" ... whats funny with this dude is (or in this case, dudette) it's worth "about" the same repaired or not repaired, the miles kill it .. so what price Glory .? ..
If I read this right, your kinda stuck between a rock and a hard spot .. you say it drives fine, and I'm not saying they're wrong, they could 110% correct ..
me personally, I would take it to a VW god 20/30 miles away and get another opinion *"without"* telling them the whole sad story - hey the light went on, whats needed to fix it, does it really need anything and can we just pull the light, and I'm not a dumb blonde ..
Just remember, mekanics and service centers make dealers look like Mother Teresa, they're like surgeons, they never saw a person they couldn't cut on, and mekanics never saw a motor they couldn't replace -needed, or not- the key word being here is "needed" .. so if you go in saying: hey, the guy down the street says I need a new tranny, engine block, turbo kit and wiper blades, Then, your going to get a price on a new tranny, engine block, turbo kit and wiper blades, whether you need it or not .l.o.l...
It could be worse, you could be driving a Phaeton .. Yikes.!
Maybe this helps, maybe not .. maybe I missed your whole post and I need more coffee .................................

GT version, 2 door coupe, dark green, automatic, A/C, power window, locks, and driver's seat, remote entry, Am/fm/cd, rear spoiler, overhead console, great condition, never been wrecked, 104k miles, four new tires, new brakes, new battery.
Trade-in value at Ford Dealer?
=======================================
Raleigh, nice town .... so where's the good news.? .. we have a 98 GT Grand Prix coupe' with the auto, we have the no-sale green deal going on, spoiler, no Oh oh it's Maaco, deep sneakers, new stoppers, new power pack and you say it's in nice condition and we haven't had any visits to Dr. Repair, but we do have (gulp) 104 Big Klicks ...... trade side, in and around the tall $2's, "might" maybe get a dealer to wander over to the low/mid $3's if it's super nice, clean and it looks/drives like 50k, if it's just a beat high miler with new stuff, then were back to the tall $2's .................
Happy hunting and let me know.!

Dealer offered $2000 flat - we balked and they finally ended up agreeing to $2800 or so after "reworking all the numbers." Husband likes his car just fine, was semi-offended by low offer, so we walked and did not purchase new vehicle. There you go!
Pick up the car tonight. To refresh your memory, it is a 2000 Z3 5-speed with 28k in South Florida. Dealer started at $22k without CPO, you said $19.5. After watching it sit on the lot for a month, they upgraded to CPO and I got it for $20k (before lease payoff/trade - which you also pegged right at the limit of the dealer's pain threshold).
Thanks for the sage advice.
The mileage is too high to put a warranty on it, and you can't finance it - dealers don't get into the notion of cash deals on a vehicle they can't warranty - if it breaks, they get to eat the repairs...
>> trade side, in and around the tall $2's << ........
They finally offered $2,800 for a $2,800 vehicle, and you walked out ..?!? .. I guess he showed them.!! .. what did hubby do next, stick a sharp pencil in his eye and stick his tongue out at em' on the way out .....?
Terry
The initial lowball offer was a huge turnoff since they had been pretty straight negotiating prior to that point. The deal did not "feel" right to us, so we walked and the husband will wait to get a new vehicle. We weren't desparate in other words to get rid of the car. The particular truck we were negotiating on wasn't necessarily his "first" choice either.
To Drftracer:
my post, #20851 was aimed at folks who are offended by their trade offers. Please read it. You have over 100,000 miles on a 7 year old car - there's no way a dealer can retail the vehicle, at all, so it has to be wholesaled.
The mileage is too high to put a warranty on it, and you can't finance it - dealers don't get into the notion of cash deals on a vehicle they can't warranty - if it breaks, they get to eat the repairs...
****************************
I'm not stupid - I'm not expecting them to "retail" the vehicle. I know it's going wholesale. Terry quote tall 2's. Their intial offer was $2000 flat. It sucked. Point blank.
Why buy a new vehicle unless you are 100% satisfied with 100% of the terms? as well as 100% satisfied with the vehicle?
i dont disagree with that part, but however they did it, they offered you the $800 additional that YOU ASKED FOR, and you turned it down.
if someone gives me $10, i dont care if it came from their IRA account or its in penny rolls. ive got $10.
p.s. if its not his first choice, why even negotiate? i wouldnt buy a kia, so that tells me not to go negotiate on one. the worst thing you can do is buy a car you dont really want. you'll hate every penny you spend on it. from that point of view, im glad you didnt take it.
Year: 2000 (Original Owner)
Make: Honda
Model/Trim: Civic EX 2dr Coupe 1.6L Automatic
Color: Green
Area: Northern NJ/suburbs of NYC
Mileage: 91,000 miles (mostly highway miles from a long 120 mile/day commute)
Accident history: Involved in one reported collision where other driver backed into it; additional damage taken when the car was hit at two separate times while parked in lots and in a third incident where a rock was apparently thrown at it while it was parked.
Mechanical problems: none known
Maintenance/Repairs:
- oil & oil filter changed every 4000-5000 miles (not at a dealership)
- spark plugs and air filter changed every 35,000 miles (not at a dealership)
- muffler/exhaust replaced at 80,000 miles (not at a Honda dealer... at Meineke)
- brakes replaced at 70,000 miles (at a Honda dealership)
Body problems: detailed below
- two dents in hood, apparently caused by a rock thrown while the car was parked. larger dent is appx 2 inches in diameter, smaller under 1 inch... both showing some signs of rusting
- front bumper cracked/chipped at its edge, near wheelbase on the passenger side, was apparently hit while parked in a lot
- rear bumper cracked and scratched, also apparently from being hit while parked (separate incident)
- rear driver-side quarter panel dented and scratched, appx 12 inches in length (not quite a diameter so much as oblong), from when someone backed into the car
- two small bullseye cracks in the windshield, though I would definitely have that replaced prior to putting it up for sale
Interior defects/damage:
- Strange wearing on the rubber of the steering wheel... never understood why it happened; occured in first year of ownership, but hasnt increased in severity since
- Slight tearing in the material where the sliding cover of the moonroof is from when it was opened after a long period of it being closed... nothing major, but I figured I'd mention everything
Any thoughts as to what my car would be worth as it is (as a trade-in and/or private sale), whether or not making the repairs prior to the sale would allow me to recoup the costs, and whether or not any of the repairs are more crucial than others?
I'd appreciate your assistance in trying to find out how much the car is worth and whether I'd best be served by selling it or driving it until it can't be driven anymore. Having rid myself of the long commute that put so much mileage onto the car, I'm looking to move to something larger and more comfortable.
Thanks,
Aedh
*an independent shop might be able to find one (engine) out of a low mileage wreck*
If you could get an engine put in for say, $2,000, it might be worth it (?) But here's another way to look at it:
I looked up the reliability ratings of all VW models in Consumer Reports. They all have tons of "black marks" that increase as the cars age. Most VW's are "not recommended" by CR due to poor reliability. I myself had a 6 month old 1990 Passat which had major transmission problems (& other problems) at about 10,000 miles. So I'm not so sure getting even 100,000 miles out of a VW w/o major problems is likely--& are you sure "neglect" caused this, or is that just what the dealer is telling you? There's not that much you can seriously "neglect" in the first 30K miles (unless it was used as a taxi in Afganistan), even if it had minimal oil changes.
My long-winded point is: imo this kind of thing is to be expected with VW's. Personally, I'd buy a used $5-$10K Toyota Corolla before I'd buy another VW--even if they give you a "good trade in" on your broken one.
Repeat after me: "I must buy a super-reliable car this time" (Toyota, Honda, Acura, maybe Subaru). Something that's "just getting broken in" at 100K, instead of breaking down. And just write off the VW, or try to get $500 for it, & move on.......you really didn't do that bad getting 100K (or70K) miles out of a VW. Good luck!
I wanted to see if I could get help in determining what may be the trade-in value for:
1998 BMW 323iConvertible
73,800 miles, original, non-smoker owner
Silver, light grey leather interior
No accidents, clean
Automatic
Premium Audio (HK)
Heated Seats
CD changer
Brand new dealer installed brakes pads and rotors (all four)
Brand new dealer installed rear plastic window
The condition of the car is good - 2 minor scratch to paint (I think it can be buffed out)- car needs to be waxed but still looks great.
I am looking to get a used BMW station-wagon so will be asking a BMW dealer to do the trade-in in Southern California.
The Edmunds trade-in value comes to 15,546.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks,

I live in Phoenix.
BTW, I got $17k as a trade-in value which was satisfactory considering I bought my new car at invoice.
You didn't give me a location or color on the vehicle .. so "depending" on where you live and the color, if it's still super nice and clean, no repaints, still smells new .. then trade side, in and around the tall $20ish low/mid $21ish figure .......
Don't forget to let me know ...

You mentioned interest in the '02 Escape someone posted, my wife and I traded an '01 two weeks ago and here's how we did:
'01 Escape XLT, medium wedgewood blue
loaded, roof, 6 disc mach stereo, leather, air
36,500 miles
new tires at 15k (Firestones were terrible, replaced with Michelins)
Grand Rapids, Michigan
Sounds good so far, but the paint had numerous scratches, and I took a Dremel to the dash trying to get some epoxy off it (my handiwork left about a 6" round area all carved up right below the HVAC controls, it looks like someone dragged a cheese grater across it about 40 times). The transmission slipped quite a bit also.
We traded it away to the Ford dealer for $12k. I was pretty happy with this number, as we had been hit up by the Pontiac dealer last year at $14k, and that was pre-Dremel and pre-scratches on the paint.
My wife doesn't allow the Dremel near her car anymore.
