First, the *pre-owned luxury dealer*, if I understand it, is not "offering" you $28K. That's what you *might* get if someone walks in & pays their full asking price. If you've had no interest at around the price they're going to ask......they might do better, after......how long (?); but what if the best offer they get is $28-$29 (& then deduct their commision from that)?
You have a sweet car there: Sport/Premium, htd seats, rear shade, xenons, CPO. I wish my 5-er had the SP & xenons.........But if you "have" to trade it; does your state have the trade-in sales tax advantage if you trade it in to a dealer? That can make it worth it to trade-in instead of selling outright. BTW, what are you going to buy instead?
Not sure what you mean about the trade in sales tax advantage. I live in OK and I've never heard of it. Probably doesn't matter since the only dealerships I've talked to about trade-ins are out of state in TX.
Terry: what do you think. hold out for a better price or pull the trigger at the $28k price?

We're in the market for a new 3-row SUV, and if all goes well, we'd would like to try to keep it 5 years. We've narrowed the list to the Pilot EX, Explorer XLT, Durango SLT and Trailblazer EXT LS. I'm assuming the Pilot will hold its value the most, but beyond that which of these do you see having the most trade value in 5 years?

The Explorer was 9th on the list for worst trade-in value after 5 yrs. The Durango and Trailblazer weren't on the list, which I'm assuming means they hold their value a little better(don't know how much).

I could also find one of these new, and get employee pricing, plus $4500 off....about $23k plus TT&L. Would I be better off with the above truck, or a new one? I'm thinking new since it would have less mileage, and the employee discount should help cut way way down on the first year depreciation.

I wish I could give you some better news .. I liked it better when "I thought" it was a SLE V6 not a 4 banger, the good thing is, it's the right color .. if you see $20,0 that would be great, anything after that would be amazing ~ but hey, you live in "Naw Leans" and anything could happen ................

Your not trying to kill anyone, it's priced right .. it's a $15ish vehicle on the trade side .. are you using big ad's in big papers.? .. sometimes the local "Thrifty Nickel" don't get it done .......

Maintenance/Repairs:
- oil & oil filter changed every 4000-5000 miles (not at a dealership)
- spark plugs and air filter changed every 35,000 miles (not at a dealership)
- muffler/exhaust replaced at 80,000 miles (not at a Honda dealer... at Meineke)
- brakes replaced at 70,000 miles (at a Honda dealership)
Body problems: detailed below
- two dents in hood, apparently caused by a rock thrown while the car was parked. larger dent is appx 2 inches in diameter, smaller under 1 inch... both showing some signs of rusting
- front bumper cracked/chipped at its edge, near wheelbase on the passenger side, was apparently hit while parked in a lot
- rear bumper cracked and scratched, also apparently from being hit while parked (separate incident)
- rear driver-side quarter panel dented and scratched, appx 12 inches in length (not quite a diameter so much as oblong), from when someone backed into the car
- two small bullseye cracks in the windshield, though I would definitely have that replaced prior to putting it up for sale
Interior defects/damage:
- Strange wearing on the rubber of the steering wheel... never understood why it happened; occurred in first year of ownership, but hasn't increased in severity since
- Slight tearing in the material where the sliding cover of the moonroof is from when it was opened after a long period of it being closed... nothing major, but I figured I'd mention everything
Any thoughts as to what my car would be worth as it is (as a trade-in and/or private sale), whether or not making the repairs prior to the sale would allow me to recoup the costs, and whether or not any of the repairs are more crucial than others?

It's not that you have a lot of damage, you just have a bunch of nit-picking 5 years on the road "everywhere" kinda stuff going on ... forget the slider work, fix the windshield, side quarter "probably" needs to be filled and painted, but we go 90k, "might" buff-out a enough to make it look presentable, bumper "might" be buffed - maybe needs the fix and paint, but 90k .. same for the front bumper, a knick/dent here and there, fine, but it's got 90k+ ..
Ya know, a visit to the dent Dr. and a super nice detail by a Great detailer in the area would get 80/90% out of it, or you can spend $500/$700+ on paint and fix, and get back $200, maybe .. clean, your talkin' in and around the $5's, some dealer might stagger towards the $6 range on a good day, it's not a keeper for a dealer ... me personally, I would finish any service, get all the paper history, deep sneakers (or close) get with Dr. Dent and the Duke of Detail, drop a superb fat daddy Ad, $8,900 *asking* and kick it for the first $7,5/$8,5 ... hey, College and schools are only a few weeks away, plus you always have the guy that needs good transportation to get to the topless bars, I mean to get to work .......

If you can get a low mileage one with plenty of factory warranty left at a *great* price......hey, you can drive it year 'round down there :-) Saabs depreciate steeply; maybe you can make that work for you if you really want a used one. But you might want to see the Long Term test of the 9-3 in the June '04 Automobile mag. before making a decision........they had quite a few problems with it & it was a pretty mixed review. (Then there was the guy I bought used snow tires from a couple of years ago who had a 9-3 convert. who was complaining about the repairs & the depreciation on it.......)

Going against your car:
1. 1995 and 105K miles, no real bank will loan against it and no dealer with sell it with a warranty.
2. Poor repair history and maintenance as apparant by the not-fixed items and the not-repaired windshield.
Car is going to the auction, which means whatever the wholesale/auction value is, the dealer is going to subtract a couple of hundred dollars.
I'm thinking in the as-is condition, definitely less than $1,000 trade in. Maybe/probably much less.
At the very least you need to get the crack in the windshield repaired, $50 or less. Get an estimate on the cruise control and a/c (could be a bad vacuum line causing both hot air and no cruise). If those repairs cost less than $400 total have it done, detail the car out nice. Then you can retail out the car yourself. Ask $3,000 and take any CASH offer in the $2200-$2900 area. Nice under $3,000 cars with all maintenance records and good looking condition with everything working are usually easy sellers to college kids, people needing second cars, etc.
If the repairs are expensive, take your few hundred dollars on trade and be happy. The car is what it is, a 9+ year old nice looking, needing several repairs, high mileage, sub compact.

Sounds like a nice vehicle (auto - right.?) 4 things are going on here .. for starters, it's summer it's 85++ and even though black is a favored and admired color, especially up north and in S.Cal .. but folks that have had one before (or the guy at work) will probably admire it and then take the route to El Paso - so your "buying" market shrinks a little ..
The second thing is the price, that $30ish price range can be difficult, it's like that "$10ish" market, lots of vehicles for sale and most buyers are trying to be under that, plus you have pre-owned Lexus, Audi, Infiniti, Jag, Volvo and new Acura's to compete with, so your market shrinks a little and being in OK probably doesn't help .l.o.l. .... next is the miles, even though they might be low to you and the guy who lives in Pittsburg, 42k is tall, most Bimmer buyers are lookin' for those 18/25krs, in your case the cpo warranty is a saviour and the "value" is: it makes it "saleable" in the market .. see, most folks don't ride around all day lookin' for Bimmers and Benz's with tall miles and no warrantys, *unless* the miles are super low ~ or, they just moved here from the Madagascar ...
The last thing is: the advertising, "the presentation" of the vehicle .. ebay is great at selling pots, pans and bobble-head dolls, but the "kill" ratio is only about 18% when it's a "regular" vehicle type .. clean low milers will sell well, but even folks in Atlanta won't try to purchase a vehicle in OKC, not when there is probably 200+ Bimmers between them and you .. auto traders are ok, but most page through them over coffee or sitting on a bus or sitting *somewhere* .l.o.l.. .. hitting the biggest paper in the area with a 2/3 week BIG ad usually works best, and it doesn't hurt to drop a fat one in the DFW area at the same time ......... now that I bored you into a coma ~ $28 is a good price, not a great price, but a fair price .. most dealers will be lookin' at in and around the $26ish figure come trade side .... so what price glory.?

Father-in-law has 4 months left on his lease, and might want to end early (interested in a G35 Coupe). Much depends on current trade in value of the car. So, here are the details:
2001 Lexus GS300
Light Green exterior, Tan leather interior
Moonroof
Chrome Wheels
CD Changer
Heated Seats and Power Seat package
39,000 miles.
New tires.
Fully serviced at dealer.
Car is in good condition - no major scrapes, bumps, bruises, frecn fry invasions, etc. I would call it clean.
Where would you put the trade-in value on this car?

Nice vehicles, color is almost good for Florida, miles are kinda ok, we have the chromee's, cold pack, new sneaks, service, no Burdines invasions and no America fries (can't be french frys, they're too busy drinking wine, eatin' cheese and lookin' for their courage) .. all in all, sounds like a pretty nice driver ....... trade side, in and around the tall $20's, low low $21ish figure ..... G35.? another nice driver ....

A buddy of mine at work is looking for some new wheels... his '95 Taurus has a bad muffler and warm breeze, so it's time. No Ford this time, and something nice, please, pleasant on long trips, and lookin' good in Chicago, or going camping in the Upper Pensinsula.
We have a budget of "$10 or so", and he's open to my suggestion that deals can be found just north of fault lines. Call it $11.
Oh yeah, and the wuss wants automatic. And him German, too. Pfffft...
No real commute (1.5 miles) and 12k miles per year. No family yet, so maybe something to please comely young ladies...

I'm thinking:
Lexus IS300 -- if they've sunk this low, which I doubt. Maybe a miley '01?
Subaru -- he likes those, but they tend to be pricey used.... what can one expect for $11 in a base Outback, say.
A nice Impala would be OK, but probably too mundane. Lincoln LS V6 with some miles? Too iffy in reliability? For that reason, the Catera is out.
Audi A4: Now you're talking... 2000 1.8 auto quattro.... maybe? The hold their value pretty well, probably too well...
A 2001 Cherokee would fit the bill but probably too uncomfortable on the freeway.
Maybe that super-duper 24-month lease on the Mazda RX8...?
Come on, guys, help me spend this guy's money :-)

Soooo, in the land of Aaarnold we have 98 323i convert .. we have 75k, auto, no smoke, right color, cold pack, ear busters, new stoppers, new looker, a kiss here and there ... IF ~ the seats look hovered in, no curb burns on the wheels, no repaints, serviced, looks feels/drives like an 01 with 30k .. then trade side, in and around the tall $11's low $12's, "might" find a dealer that will waddle towards the tall $12's if it's super nice and needs -0- .....
$15,546 .?? .l.o.l.. not in California time or any other time for that matter ... Where dooooo they get these numbers ..? thats almost a retail figure ..
Me personally, I would take this puppy down Retail Rd .. right area, right color, right miles - superb detail, wonderful Big Fat daddy Ad, $16,900 *asking* and off it goes for $15,5/$16,5 .. if it's as nice as you say it is, then it won't last a week in the land of the rich and futile ............
