Car is gone- has been sold for $43K.
It was not CPO- Carmax store.
For future- Is it safe to buy cars like LS from Carmax or better look for CPO/Lexus dealership offers? Car was in very good shape and serviced at Lexus.
One more thing- Do they negotiate at Carmax?(Listed at $43.5 and sold for $43?)
Thanks for your excellent service!

Can you give me a little of your advise on this re-post?
Thanks,
Mike

Terry,
Well I heard there was more to look at than Heritage Softails and the Black Hills -- unless we are re-defining Softail.....
We had a shop do a complete teardown of the front end (frame perfect, no balloons went off) and replace the fender and other parts - no bondo, factory paint. I did read Mathias's reference url on what to look for.... It is difficult to tell work was done.
So....in your humble opinion are my dollars better protected with the 3 year old LX or a new Denali if I'm looking for a 6 to 8 year hitch???
Shouldn't these both be around $40 big ones ??
Oh, yes, the boat. It's a Teal and White Searay Signature 200 -- which is a 20 foot bowrider -- with a Mercruiser Alpha One pushed by a 5.0 litre V8. It tops at 4300 lbs with trailer on the local truck scale. Love going to the Colorado River with it.
I'd move to your side just for the boating, but my wife would have a hard time with the humidity....
Welcome back - thanks for the help....
I will bet that Carmax will tend to be siginifcantly cheaper though. Just make sure to have an independant inspection done. And, doesn't Carmax offer some sort of return policy?
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
Carmax has pretty good cars but they do not seem to be cheaper: all Lexus LS/GS430 we found on their website have non-negotiable (?) prices that most of the time higher than some Lexus/Non-Lexus dealers asking/buying prices...
7yr/100K miles Lexus warranty can be had for about $2.5K that makes this 2002/14K miles car cost us $45.5 plus doc, title and tax...
We have seen similar cars with 20/25K miles offered for $39-41K with no CPO and $41-44 CPO...

Something doesn't sound right .. lets say they had $9,5 in a 28ker after paint work, a tire on the left side, a detail, a little service work, a Dr. Dent visit and the pack .. you should have seen $400/$500ish - it's a Focus, not a Patek Philippe ... unless they bought these back in March/April.?
Terry.
corvette: We did ask about having the 3.0 put in and both the BMW dealer and the BMW specialist said not many people would do it.

$43..? .. that was cheap $$, I had a feeling that wouldn't last long, even at $45 with super low miles and all the junk to go with .. the nice thing about a LS is, in 2/3 years you can find a buyer at 50/60k (properly serviced) .. if it was a "S" class Benz you would be holding your breath ....... as long as you know the history and do a little homework you can purchase a vehicle from Hannibal Lecter ... well, maybe not Hannibal Lecter .l.o.l...

Terry.
Been awhile since I posted in here. Quick question. The wife's Silver 2000 Solara is about at the end of it's lease. The buyout for the lease is $9300. Wondering what you think it's worth. Here's the specs:
2000 Solara SE (silver)
4 banger - manual
40,000 miles
all options EXCEPT leather, alarm, and cd changer
new rubber
new rotors/brakes
1 door ding
a few small scratches (which could probably be buffed out)
Pittsburgh, PA area.
Thanks in advance!!!

Welcome back to the Ha Ha Hotel ...
Soooo, let's take a look - (thats what my Proctologist said to me the last time I was there) .. we have a silver SE Solara with the 4 banger, we have El Manual doing the shifting, we got 40k, new stoppers and new rubber .... $9,300 is fair, the miles are low, you know the previous owner and you don't mind that guy Manual between the seats .... is that a quoted price from the dealer or the lease co. ....?
Terry.
Just kidding. Hope my husband doesn't read this! Seriously, we have been together 9+ years and have survived 35+ cars .. could a BMW really do THAT much damage?
Such as it is.
-Mathias
1998 Chevrolet Malibu
Pretty basic - white car, steel wheels and hubcaps, power options, CD player, 90k miles, good condition considering the miles, some stone chips on the front... New brakes and rotors, new tires, new battery. $800+ sunk into it in the past 6 months. Insurance company is offering her $4k, she owes $5400. No gap insurance. Is this a fair value?
She wants to buy my:
2002 Nissan Altima 2.5S
White with tan interior, power windows/locks/mirrors/seat, CD player, ABS and side balloons, about $2k in total bodywork from various incidents. Rear bumper looks acceptable now, and there's some slight overspray on the black trim on the right side. I have two keys and two remotes, all records (no major mechanical problems), and a bottle of touch-up paint. If she buys, I will replace the front tires with Michelin Hydroedges to match the rears (which are new). You pegged it at $10,900 private party about a month ago, which is the price I quoted her. Is this still a fair price? Can she roll the $1400 negative equity into the Nissan at that price?
Thanks a million - this board keeps me entertained!
You should start looking for a new car when YOU want to, not this dealer. If you really want a new Honda, shop around at 2 or 3 dealers, & post the $$ #'s here BEFORE you commit, & Terry &/or others will tell you if it's a good deal, or not.
Just my 2 cents....... I just have the feeling that "your dealer" is the one pulling the strings here........
*My dealer contacted me about buying back my 2001 Honda Civic LX, so I am going in for an "appraisal"*
Sorry to be off topic, but I hear ya... I got numerous family members sprinkled around the Sunshine state, most in and around the Tampa/St Pete area. Most were pretty lucky this "go-around"... I really feel for the people that were hit and hit hard, amazing the magnitude of damage those things are capable of. Did you fair ok the land of Disney? Please keep those people in your prayers.....
thanks.
Brent
The fact my wife knows how to drive a stick makes me happy. As for the price, that is the end of lease buyout from the lease company, which I was told, by them no less, was negotiable.
Terry.
So I would assume your dealing with the lease co.?
Terry.

Whoa ..! .. there was thousands of Heritage Softails there, I mean oodles, bunches, tons and there was even some HD's there too .l.o.l.... the tear down sounds right, so if the paint and stuff is right then you shouldn't have a problem with it down Retail Rd, properly disclosed ....
I try not to "assume" whats going on in 6/8 years, nobody knows and it's all a guess .. but right now, clean 01 Denali's with 40/50k are doing in and around the $22/$23 range on the trade side and see the $26ish range down Retail Rd ...... the Searay sounds really nice, one of the plants isn't too far from me, so I've had a chance to look at em' real close - enjoy.!
Terry.
Got one for you up here in CT (Watertown, to be exact)... found a 2000 VW Passat GLX V6 in very nice shape that I'm seriously considering. Silver with black leather interior, *manual* tranny (woohoo!), about 41500 clicks, loaded... power everything, sunroof, heated seats with memory (driver's), single disc added to the standard Monsoon cassette audio system (don't think there's a changer), keyless with alarm, auto dimming mirror, nifty multi-function computer (trip, mileage, etc), single-zone auto climate control... you get the idea. All of that is actually standard on the GLX with the exception of the CD, I believe. It was dark when I was looking at it, but there were floodlights... as far as I could tell, only a couple (like maybe 2) very minimal dings/scratches... maybe some minor chewed up edges on one or 2 of the wheels, but brand new tires. Interior seemed very clean. It's a "certified" used VW, which means it also comes with a 2yr/24K mile warranty from time of purchase. Dealer is asking $14995... what do you think is a price we can agree on?
Thanks for your help...
You might want to repost the info on your car & add more details for Terry to give you a quote, like:
transmission, color, condition of interior & tires, 2/4 doors, etc.
Have you thought of selling it privately? I like the college kid scenario. I've made LOTS more money by selling Hondas & Toyota Corollas privately instead of trading them in--phone ringing off the hook, selling the first day, etc. And maybe the body damage, if it was repaired well, wouldn't affect it too much (?)--like it would on a high end Lexus or BMW.
Woody
We (the family) couldn't see auntie paying full boat retail for it for her part of the estate on somebody elses say so ! She is disabled and on a crummy fixed income.
The rest of us are older and have done quite well for ourselves so as far as we are concerned GIVE her the car and her full piece of the estate !
Granny would of wanted it that way !
Thanks again !!!!!!
BTW: Our winter places west of Daytona were untouched. Still haven't heard from my sister in St. Pete. Phones are still jammed or not working. Uncle in WPB is gonna take a trip there today to check on her...........
Even though he knows better, the friend who wanted a $10+ nice car is thinking about this:
2000 Audi A6 2.7T quattro sedan
80k miles, no-sale blue
6sp manual (really)
Presumably leather
Carfax clean, mysterious 2,000 miles at first sale, then one Detroit owner to 80k.
First "title issued" was March of 2001, kinda late for a 2000. So that's one salty winter less to worry about.
At a Farmington Hills dealer, for the "internet special" price of $14.
That's all I've got; haven't seen the car yet.
TIA -Mathias
I was on the lease questions board, and the numbers for a lease on a brand new one are unreal.. Virtually, zero finance charge.. A 3-year loan on that car with 80K miles would be about $420/month and I bet maintenance/repairs will be another $150-$200/month.. I bet you could lease a brand new one for under $600/mo with maintenance/warranty included for the entire term.
And that 80K Audi probably won't be worth squat after 3 more years and with 125K miles.
I guess the illustration is just to show how bad a deal a high-mile Audi would be.. I doubt either of these choices would be good for your friend...

Actually, the part that really concerns me is the 2.7T. A highly complex, overstressed trubo, with lots of pricey parts just waiting to let go.
It is a sweet car though, comfy and a hoot to drive.
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
for $10-$14K? (Boring, I know, but you will save $$ & sanity with minimal repair bills). Or what about a used Lexus SC 300/400? Sweet cars, unless you have to have a 4 dr. They depreciate a lot, I think, as they age, a mid-90's might even be close to your budget(?)
I would buy a '95 Lexus or Acura (I'm just guessing at prices) before I'd buy a newer Audi w/no warranty........
This is opposite to my last suggestion to get a Volvo, but even a Volvo or BMW (except for the 7 series) would usually be less expensive to maintain than an Audi. Check out some of the Audi owner's reviews on Edmunds......

gross profit pack
$1-$1599 40%

that $9500 cost focus that i sold for $10900:
$1400 gross profit minus 40% pack = $840 payable gross @30% = $252

00 Passat up in CT .. 4 dr/2wd right .? .. we got 42k low miles (for the year) we have that funny guy El' Manual for the tranny work, slider, bun warmers, good color, V6, all the right stuff for a GLX and we have the warranty ...
If it's a nice one, clean, good history, no uh oh it's Maaco, deep sneakers, serviced, then the dealer probably has the tall $10's low $11's in it, add the warranty and he's sitting "around" the $12,0 figure, on a push .. a fair price for both would be around the $13,5/13,9ish figure and $14,5 would just flat kill it ........
Good luck - let me know.!
Terry.
I could see that at a Benz or a Bimmer store that does 50/70 vehicles a month, but a Ford/Nissan store ..?!? .. Nooooo waaaay.!
Who owns it, Steve Wynn.? .l.o.l...
Terry.
unfortunately, i like the people and the dealership alot, or i would have never taken a job here to start with.
crazy.

I'm glad things worked out .. when my Granny passed away, the lawyer told me the same thing "it's worth $25,0 and thats what we are going to show" .. I told him he was an idiot, I paid for the vehicle and I will run it to the auction, then I'll buy it back for $17/$18,0, which I did, and I gave it to my Aunt ...............
BTW: I guess they have been busting hotels, convenience stores, hardware, gas stations for price gouging all over the state - they need to give them guys about 30 years in the electric chair .....
Terry.

Sounds like it could be a nice one .. miles are right, color is great, as long as we don't have any curb burns, Jack the Ripper interior, *no repaints* .. then trade side, in and around the super tall $32,0 low $33ish range, might "maybe" "could" get a dealer to travel to the mid $33ish range if it's super nice super clean and it needs -0- .......
Happy hunting and don't forget to let me know ..!
Terry.
I looked at these really hard back in '98... really cool little car, at least I thought so...
Air was a dealer add-on for the CX... they didn't even have pwr steering, I loved the feel... anyway, I think the DX comes sans air as well.
Keepin' em honest in mid-MI, -Mathias
Just try buying one used, very pricey, and you'd be lucky to find one at all. Like Legacy's, the yahoos who buy those hang on to them.
I drove one in '98 and remember approaching a pothole -- cool MI feature, they're everywhere! -- and kinda gritting my teeth. Hardly knew it was there as the 'double-wishbone' did its thing. Very nice car, was especially drawn to the low tech/high tech factor of no pwr steering, no pwr anything -- but still a sophisticated car.
We were expecting at the time so I bought a 4door... I'm thinking I shoulda bought that Civic and I'd still have it. Even a CCBA member can be monogamous for awhile...
-Mathias
The info:
Silver w/ black interior- clean-no fries!
exterior - a few little stone chips up front
service is up to date
Options: auto; rear spoiler; high output CD stereo(factory); and sliding electric sunroof. --Going to dealer this Saturday for appraisal--
23K miles; I'm in Central Jersey
I'm offended
I think I'm heading to the dealer tomorrow... $13,5 is what I was hoping for, so hope they're on the same page as you in terms of what's fair.
BTW... by "$14,5 would just flat kill it", I assume you mean don't bother if they get stuck there?
Thanks again...
