    Hi There,

I have a 1999 VW Passat GLS with 68500 Miles on it. It has very minor body damage, a piece of the bottom grill is missing, the interior is clean, AM/FM radio, the tires are balding a little and it need brakes..other than that it is is good condition. I live in Southern Caliornia (if that makes a difference)

    Thanks!

    Some folks asking for advice.

    Both in Boston:

    2002 Volvo S60 T5
    15,000 miles
    handshaker
    tan cloth interior
    light green exterior
heated seats, power driver seat, sunroof
looks very clean - no dings or dents - little scrape on the lower front bumper
    Tires are original.
Dealer points to books that say retail around $25K but it's got 3 strikes on it with the color, stick, and cloth.

    2001 Lincoln LS V8
    21,000 miles
    Auto sport shift
    tan leather
    gold/tan exterior
heated seats, 17" wheels, sunroof, sport pack?
again looks very clean - little rim rash on 1 and scrapes on rear bumper.
    Tires are original.
It's a lot queen - been at a Ford dealer about 2 months. Dealer sticker says $24K, dealer website says $22K, books say $20K certified.

    Thanks in advance.

    and you presume correctly..no sunroof.

I would have been all over that Volvo if I saw it before I bought my most recent car, if the price is right. You are correct that the weird equipment level will make it a tough sell, but I kinda like the green, only drive stick, and don't mind cloth. Plus, I have issues with cars anyway, so...

Wait a minute - folks come in here continually expecting an appraiser to evaluate their vehicles, in an accurate manner, without very important information. For instance, where the vehicle lives is important, since a RWD car won't sell for squat in Vermont in January. Alternately, you'll get twice as much for an older 4x4 in September/October than you would in March in many areas.

A sunroof is a $500-100 add in value. Don't you think $500-1000 is important?

There's also a big difference in a sedan and a wagon - a dark green car (no sale) versus white or silver, especially in the warmer states.

Not to be mean, but the folks who need to chill out are those who come here looking for free advice and won't give an appraiser enough info to work with, especially when there's now a form to follow, found at the top of the page...

OK, Jim's off his soapbox now....

Hi folks - I am getting ready to potentially trade in the following vehicle.

    Location: St. Louis, Missouri
    Year: 2000
    Make/Model: Toyota Celica GTS
    Mileage: 61500 miles
    Engine: 4 cyl, 1.8 L (approx 180 HP stock, 195+ HP w/ mods)
    Transmission - Manual - 6 speed
Color - exterior: black, interior: gray
    Major Options - Alloy wheels,Leather, sunroof,spoiler
    Condition:
Clean interior, exterior - minor hail damange on roof
      Tires - worn - % unknown
      Brakes - worn - % unknown
Maintenance - new clutch recently installed
Other: Insurance claims : Hail damage - unfixed

I had a couple questions for anyone willing to help out :

    1) I installed an aftermarket Injen cold air intake, as well as an aftermarket short shifter (short throw) into the Celica. The car is past it's warranty, and I am wondering whether or not to mention these additions to the dealer. Could this potentially ruin my trade in negotiation? And FYI - without making mention of these additions, they most likely wont be noticeable unless you are a regular Celica driver.

    2) The car has recently had a new clutch installed, but other than that - little to no work needing to be done on it. Can someone give their thoughts on the real world trade in value?

    Thanks in advance!!

Just a wild guess.......I was going to say $5K trade in......then I did the #'s on Edmund's in "rough" condition & it said $6100. It's not going to make a great impression on any dealer the way it sounds (looks). You could put some $$ into fixing things, but personally, I'd probably just get rid of it & get the best deal on whatever car I was buying.

    >>68500 Miles, no S/R, minor body damage, a piece of the bottom grill is missing, balding tires and it need brakes.."other than that it is is good condition".

They were willing to match my payoff (~$95xx)on a trade for a 2004 Pathfinder, and were giving away all the money on the new ones (Invoice minus $3250 rebate) and I still couldn't make it work. But it made me think that the Pathy isn't the one to be upgrading at this point. So now I'm thinking of selling the Z. We have:

    1994 Nissan 300ZX Convertible
    123,xxx miles
    3.0 V-6 (non-turbo)
    5-speed
    Black Emerald over ivory cows.
Factory ragtop (not many of those around)
It's in amazing shape for a 10 year old car. One owner, clean Carfax, no wrecks, no re-spray, no smoking, no Taliban. Has new clutch and flywheel, new timing belt and water pump, new sneakers and brakes. Needs some TLC from the dent guy and leather man, but I already have that scheduled. Retail Road number?

Interested in a 2002 Honda S2000. Silver over black. 30,900 miles. VIN is JHMAP11442T002423. What should I pay?

Thanks again for all of your help.

This is the first claim of mine that will actually be paid by the at-fault party's insurance, so I assume I can claim diminished value since it's not on my policy (where I think it's excluded). I'll confirm with my own agent to be sure.

    Louisville, KY area
2004 GMC Canyon SLE 2wd regular cab, 5-cylinder, automatic
~1,000 miles at the time of the accident
    Red exterior, charcoal interior
Alloy wheels, power windows/locks/mirrors, CD player, tilt and cruise, trailer hitch
"Like new" until it was rearended. Rear bumper, bumper bracket, and hitch, will be replaced. Tailgate will be replaced or repaired. Total cost of repairs in the $1000 ballpark.
Tires have 100%, brakes have 100%, no maintenance has been required yet.

How much does the accident repair diminish the value of the above? THANKS!

Can someone give me an idea on the trading value I can expect from the dealer for my car?

    2002 Honda Civic LX, 4dr,
    20K miles, Air AC, Cruise,
    Power Window, Cassette, AM/FM radio,
    warranty expires at Jan 2005.

The potential trading area is Fremont,
    or Pleasanton CA.

KBB's price ranges from $10,735 (good)
    to $12,190 (excellent).

I was sent here from another thread for a real world value on a vehicle i would like to trade.

    Location: Fort Worth, Texas
    Year: 1998
Make/Model: ZJ Grand Cherokee Special Edition 4x4
    Mileage: 86,200
    Engine: Inline 6
    Transmission - Auto
Color - Black exterior/ Grey interior
Major Options - Dual Power Cloth Seat, ABS, Steering Wheel Stereo Controls, Cruise, Power Locks/Doors, Front Rear Tow Hooks
    Condition: Average
Details of interior and exterior, including dings, scratches etc.
      Tires - new
Brakes - 2,000 on new brakes
Maintenance- very well maintained with all oil changes at 3,500 miles and regular maintenance, minor scratches and door dings.

The dealer is quoting me $3,000, however, im finding trade-in values from $4,900-$5,500 in average condition on edmunds/Kelly Blue Book. I would like a fair offer. What can i really expect, the dealer seems to be on the way low side and at this price i would just keep my jeep.

    Thanks, Jeff

            ==================================

So far the history looks ok ...

A little convert "Z" action huh.? .. don't see many of these, 123k, black with the fact top and the daylight seats, nice combo, did some service, we got the handshaker, needs a little visit at Dr. Dent, no Dutch Boys, new sneakers and the stoppers to go with, it actually sounds nice ....

It would probably see the mid to high $5's, maybe the low low $6's on the trade side - 123,000 miles my friend .... $9,500.? sounds like a little trade allowance to me, just sold a 96 in red with 42,000 "in the wrapper" miles for $16,9 and the only thing this one needed, was a new owner and it's got that now ...... down the path to Retail Rd, clean and ready to go with a super Ad, $9,900 *asking* and that bad boy gets a new owner for $8,9/$9,5 ....

Now the S2000, the color is right, miles are semi-tall and if it's also "in the wrapper" and glows in the dark, then the dealer probably has the super tall $19's, low $20's in it, this time of the year in Big Mo I have a feeling that $21,5/$21,9 gets a new driveway ....

                         Let me know what happens.!

I was directed over here to see if a deal I am thinking about working is a good one.
Simply put, I found a 2001 Volvo V70 T5 loaded - leather, moonroof, third seat, second row boosters, headlight washers, navigation, premium sound, automatic w/ manual shift option (pretty much every option Volvo offered that year) with 45,000 miles for a 'Buy-it-now price of $19,995.
Anyway, I approached my local Volvo dealer to inquire the possibility of them finding one similar at an auction without the navigation and certifying it for less and they said they could.
I'm actually thinking of stepping down to the 2.4T, which retails for about $1,000 less and since I really don't need 250+ horsepower.
Figures I've looked at on KBB and Edmunds to name a few have this vehicle retailing above $26,000, which seems to go hand-in-hand with a $28,995 price on a certified 2002 V70 2.4T the local dealer has for sale.
Is there something I'm missing on this? A friend of mine works at that dealership and ran the VIN of the aforementioned Ebay car and found nothing major other than a power steering pump being replaced.
    Thanks for any input.

I own a 2003 Dodge NEON SXT with 19000 miles on it. I am the original owner. It is black with beige interior, automatic trans, cd stereo, pretty much the standard equipment-no spoiler, however it has dark tinted windows that was added. I live in the Phoenix AZ area. The car is very clean inside and out, no visible door dings that I know of. One ink mark the size of a grain of rice on the passenger door, some water spots that can be buffed out on the exterior. It's never been smoked in. Currently I owe $13000 on it, but don't know if I should trade it in or if I would be able to sell it privately. On autotrader.com there are many neons for sale in the metro area. What would you recommend?

           ===================================

Yeow.! - you owe $13,0 on this puppy.? it wasn't that much new, it musta been that Kia you traded in on it ... Phoenix eh.? some great golf courses there ...

We are lookin at a 03 SXT with 19k - and it's black, in Phoenix.? .. I'm lookin for some good news here, tan guts, auto, tinted windows and we have an "ink spot" ~ wasn't that a music group in the 50's. ?

If it's super nice, paint will buff out and no parking lot kisses .. then trade side, in and around the tall $6's low low low $7's, might find a dealer to go crazy and drop the mid/tall $7's in it ... no matter, you owe $13 big ones on it, so you have a firm grip .. get a extended warranty, keep it nice, get it detailed twice a year and drive it until the wheels fall off - if you trade this bad boy in, with rebates and such, you will "still" carry all that $6,000 of negative equity into the next vehicle, from then on: -it-gets-ugly- ....

                                   Terry.

The dealer is at the least "optomistic" about the 2002 at 29K. Volvo was blowing out '04s brand new for about 30K (4-5K off MSRP) at the end of the year. 20K for an '01 with 45,000 clicks seems to me (an innocent bystander) to be certainly in the ballpark. I doubt you are getting reamed, but it's not a deal that you will be telling the grandkids about ("remember the time I stole that T5"?)

For 27K you can also go buy a brand new Acura TSX.

I know I'm throwing a lot at you these days, but just to clarify, the $9500 was the trade allowance on the '99.5' Pathfinder, which was around your "high 8's up to low 9's" range. The Z will be headed to retail road if I'm going to make this happen.

The S2000 looked a little unloved. Front tires were well worn Bridgestone Potenza's (OE?), rears were new looking Dunlops. That might work on the autocross course, but not on a dealer lot. It looked rough in places, some dents and paint scrapes. I think it's a pass on that one, when there are others like it that are still in the wrapper for about the same $.

31k miles is a bit on the high side, but Grover is out in the sticks. Thanks for checking the carfax for me.

  • scantyscanty Member Posts: 164
Have a car like that on the lot with mismatched tires? We're not talking about a BHPH place. The tread pattern on the Potenza's is distinctive, so it's very noticeable.

If I keep staying away from the car lots I'm going to have to pass my CCBA membership on to some one else. I'm not going to be eligable much longer I don't think.
  • driftracerdriftracer Member Posts: 2,448
it's your history that makes you a CCBer, not necessarily the current hunt.

Certainly, in your past, you've had a lull when you weren't trading or buying - my longest lasted about 3 years, and I still have 60 vehicles in history at only 40 years old.

It'll pass, it's like a lull in the stock market. Take two aspirin, read a "New Car Review" edition of Car & Driver, Road & Track, or Motor Trend, and you'll be back to looking in no time.

    Get well soon!

I'm trying to get out of a lease - 6 months remaining on a 2002 BMW 530i. Trying to use it as a trade in, hoping to break even on the payoff value (approx $32.4K). It's Black/Tan with Sport and Premium packages, moonroof; 6 CD; Xenon lights. 21500 miles on it. "Good condition".

Edmunds trade value is approx 32-33K. The local BMW dealer low-balled me at $28,500 and I walked.

Anyone have a good idea what to expect on a trade in for it?

    Thanks in advance...

Oil change and tire rotation, along with fluid level checks every 7500 miles as specified by Toyota

I'd like to trade in and avoid selling. It's a good reliable car, of course. I just want something more fun (I'm only 24!). I'm looking to get a used Impreza WRX, but I know they'd give me less than a Toyota dealer would. If I can get a good rate on this one, I could talk the folks into a new Avalon and get this off my hands!

    Thanks for the help.

And you think an Avalon is the way to go if you want something more fun than a Camry.

I think he means let his parents trade in the Camry so they can buy an Avalon, and he still gets a WRX.

Thanks for this info. So on my 99 Accord with 82k am I screwed? What should I expect as an offer?

I don't think selling it personally would be too tough, since Accords have incredibally high reliablilty up to 200k miles, and I would rather sell it, but I would like to buy the new car this weekend, if possible.
