That's a good point about leasing. I wasn't going to trade in, though. I was just going to try to have two big-enough vehicles--one of which got good gas mileage. I might change my mind if gas goes up anymore than it already has. It's just so much better for us if we both have a big enough vehicle. I hate having to trade off vehicles depending on who is going to do the kid-toting, etc. It messes me up. You know, which car has my good sunglasses in it, etc. There are lots of families who have one minivan and one suv around here. I feel guilty about it but not enough to relinquish it. We'll go right back to smaller vehicles the minute our kids can drive themselves around. I've seen families with older kids do that--and it makes sense. But for now....big vehicles. I guess.

    1999 Ford Ranger XLT
4dr extended cab, 3.0L V-6 Manual 5-speed, 4x4 off-road, 75,000 miles, Black, sliding rear window, bed liner, bed guards.

Interior is like new with a few scrapes in the plastic below the fold down seats in the back.
Exterior has rock chips at the bottom of the truck behind the front tires and a few thin scratches on the side of the body. Tires are a year old with good amount of tread left. Well maintained, runs like new.

Could I get a real-world trade-in value for this truck please? Thanks.

FWIW, I just traded my 99 Ranger XLT S/C (baby forced a minivan).. that truck was one of the best vehicles I've owned (and I've had way too many). Drove nice, decent mileage, the 3.0 V6 is a great little motor. I really hated to get rid of it and was genuinely sad to see it go. Plus, it was pretty easy to do the regular maintenence items (brakes, filters, etc). Every bit as good as a Tacoma for a lot less money - I was going to buy a Tacoma in 99 and chose the Ranger since it was ~$7k less, and never regretted the decision. Good luck!

Am going to get a Touring after the "first year bugs" are worked out.

It's safe to say an Odyssey even with "first year bugs" will have a lot fewer quality issues than a Navigator. And I find it hard to believe a Nav has more people/cargo room than a Sienna/Odyssey.

I have an '04 RX330 I'm thinking of getting rid of to reduce my outlay. Specs are below and the only site that has any numbers up yet for '04s is KBB, which is $42,785 - Private Party, $45,750 Retail.

    Details:

    Atlanta, GA
    2004 Lexus RX330
    AWD
3,800 miles (special ordered, delivered 4/15/04)
    Savannah Metallic
Premium Plus, Mark Levinson w/6 Disk changer, Navigation, 18" Wheels, Tow Package, Accessory Package.
Absolutely perfect condition. It never sat on the lot and has been garaged both at home and the office since new.

Any advice? I have it at $40,999 but not much action.
  • volvodrvrvolvodrvr Member Posts: 4
I just looked this car up and with options as mentioned, it comes to just over $44k, so why KBB would say you can get nearly $2k over sticker for a used one is beyond me. Are people paying sticker+ on these??
  • postermikepostermike Member Posts: 28
Hmmm. Prices must have gone down. My sticker was $45,850. And I only paid $42,400.

"FWIW, I just traded my 99 Ranger XLT S/C "
jjtj -- thanks for the msg, but you're supposed to tell us WHAT YOU GOT FOR IT!
That's where the whole RWTIV thing comes in...
BTW, I drove a regular cab 99 XLT with the 3.0/auto drivetrain, and while it was a pleasant enough drivetrain, it was fairly loud and buzzy as it went about its business. Decent power, and worked well with the auto...

**It looks like I'm going to get a Navigator, which kills me because I know it won't be as reliable ...**

I wouldn't worry about the reliability, just the resale at 100k .. but hey, thats what kids are all about, so we can pump in lots of love and thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars into them ~ so in 5/10 years they can tell us what a terrible childhood they had ..l..o..l.......

    Considering trading this:

    Vehicle: 2003 Honda Civic SI
Tranny: Manual transmission (only tranny choice)
Color: Metallic Blue with black cloth interior
    Mileage23,000 miles
Options: ABS, cruise, CD, AC, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, fog lights, keyless
Condition: It looks new with the exception of a slight (maybe 1/4") ding on the lower driver's side door. The car is garaged at home but does sit in uncovered parking during the day.
The interior is spotless and we are non-smokers.

                 =========================

Did you know, if you don't buy something by the end of this month that you will lose your complete membership at CCBA, then you will have to go to all of the AA meetings after you visit NA, then you will have to pay a full yearly membership for AAA, and before you know it, you will be signing up for AARP ..... it's an election year, what can I say ..

The Si is worth the mid/tall $11's, might get a AA member to drop the low low low low low low low low (did I say low.?) $12's in it, maybe ........ the CR-V and they give you $6ish back.?

    AWD
    Mileage: 39,800
Color: Blue exterior, light grey interior
Sports package, 17" premium wheels, sliding sun roof

Condition: Interior is in very good condition - I don't eat or drink in the car, no pets, no smokers. Exterior is clean - a small 2" surface scratch on the rear passenger door and one small (1/4") puck mark on front passenger door (no paint chip). Few very small rock chips on front on hood. Tires have 30,000 miles - not driven hard. Brakes work very well. Car has been maintained per dealership recommendations, plus a few extra oil changes since 10K miles per oil change seemed too long.

    Edmunds TMV recommends $15,600 as a trade-in.
    Kelly Blue Book recommends $14,250.
I see dealers in the area selling similar cars for around $17,000.
A dealer e-mailed me an estimate for $9,500-$10,500.

    Could I get a real-world estimate please?

You are so right. I just finished spending an hour helping my 12 year analyze Treasure Island. Now that's got to be pure love. I rediscovered Cliff Notes and explained why using them is NOT cheating.

By the way, if I trade the Navigator in at 90K instead of 100K and it still has 10K worth of bumper to bumper service contract left on it, how much difference would that make to a trade in guy on a sales lot? I mean, would it be worthwhile to try to do that or would it be "six of one and half a dozen of the other?"

If you can answer my car question I'll gladly tell you about Robert Louis Stevenson's use of irony in Chapter 29 of Treasure Island and why parents worried about their boys reading it in the late 1800's. Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of Pepto Bismol!

Not much action.? .. I guess not, you can buy a new 05 for that kind of money ..

These are wonderful vehicles and I buy and sell oodles of them .. but your sitting at $40,900 - if you keep that price going on, you will be down at Home Depot buying 200lb's of potting soil for it ..... super low miles and it's the right color with tiny miles in Hotlanta ~ dealers are paying the $33ish range for the ones with the Nav and the super low low low miles ... I just sold the "twin" to yours with 6,600 miles for $36,900 - and I was happy to get it ...... $40,900..?? you won't need to take a picture of it, because it will be there for a loooong time ................. :)

    Hi Terry, and thanks.
I've got an 02 Focus SVT six-speed, a 3-door, 18K miles, leather/cloth heated seats, traction control, sunroof, 6-disc changer, in bright red. Tires almost new, couple of scuffs on the bumpers but otherwise in great shape. I'm in Seattle./Tim

           =========================

Ok, in Seahawk territory .... so we're lookin' at a 02 SVT: we gots the handshaker, we gots the low miles, we gots the pretty red color, we gots the purty heated leather and the slider with some tunes .... if it's clean, no paint work, no Starbucks poured all over the seats and it feels/looks and acts like 18k ... then trade side, in and around the super tall $8's, low low $9's -- if it needs stuff, start deducting ......

Good luck and let me know ..!

Terry - can you please give me an updated value on my parents' 98 Camry LE V6. 23,000 miles, up to date service, but original brakes and tires. Power everything/cruise/factory alloys. Also has side air bags, was special ordered to get them.

Color is metallic beige and interior is more beige. Driver's seat has a few mystery marks, but interior is pretty clean. Overall condition is good, but one shallow little crease in the left rear quarter panel - 1" x .5" at most.
Ready to trade for a new Camry in Upstate NY, near Albany.
    Thanks!
    Ed

            ==================================

Hey Ed .... it's a low mileage 98 Camry LE (actually it's a super/ultra/waaaay low mileage Camry) .. low miles just don't make the value, it's the nice/clean/cared for dudes that get the money ....

Right color, side balloons (rare), LE V6, serviced, alloys, power pack and we have a small bullet in the rear panel .... what can I say, if it's a nice one and it looks/drives/feels like an 02, no paint, no Wal-mart .. then I would think a dealer will march right into the super tall $5's low low low $6's .......

Me personally - down Retail Rd it would go .. can't get em' can't find em' like this one .. you know the deal by now: a visit to the detail god's, maybe some rubber, an oil change, definatly a wonderful big time Ad, books and records, $8,900 *asking* and cut it loose for the "real deal" offer of $7,9/$8,5 ... properly done, it won't last long .. it's a V6 LE with tiny miles and Granny owns it .. there must be 3 between here and the planet Saturn .............. ;)

    ==================================================

-0- to a trade in guy, even if it had 50k left. Probably not much if you sold it yourself either. The value there is not the warranty itself, it's that you can list it in the classifieds as being under warranty. That can backfire, as people tend to associate under warranty with low mileage. Is the Land Cruiser in the same price range as the Naviagator?

Terry - thanks for the info on the '98 Camry. Yeah, sounds like retail road is the way to go, but my parents and pretty old, and I am not nearby to help them sell it, so it's gonna get traded.

Any thoughts on a difference # between the Camry, and an '05 Accord EX 4cyl auto non-leather?? I was thinking 6K trade for the Camry and about $22k for the Accord - would put them at 16k. That realistic in Upstate NY?

Thanks again - I will let you know what happens.

    Terry,
I am planning to buy the following car in Dallas.

    2000 GS300 Platinum Edition
    Millennium Silver with Black interior
No Nak sound, but all the goodies with Platinum Ed. + chrome wheels
    44K Miles
Relatively clean interior, few ugly scratches on the stereo.
Brakes and tires needs immediate replacement(is that normal for Lexus brakes to need replacement at 44K)

Manintinence is almost non existent (at least in Lexus records) I ran the carfax and it turn out that its a Boston lease car. That explains the rust on the rotors and calipers. Drives good and everything works. I took it to local Lexus dealer for pre buy sales inspection and they came out with brakes+tires+Ball joint+alignment recommendations.

I even called the Lexus dealer in Boston who initially leased the car, there is no 15-30K service record other than oil change and tire rotation at 27K and chrome wheel install in March 03 and Balancing in July 2001. Do Lexus have national service records database?

That was good news, the question mark?
Front hood bumper and right fender have been replaced with OEM Toyota parts. Both right doors and quarter panel has been painted(relatively clean job) but at places you could see the paint crease around the window trims on the doors. All panels align perfectly. I could not see any frame damage at all, both in the engine compartment and underneath, nor did Lexus dealer mentioned any. No bolts turned in the engine area except on the right fender. Ironically it has chrome GS 400 badging on the trunk??

Dealer is my in-laws family friend, he had it on his web site asking for $19950, giving to me for 18.3K. I have not bought it yet but been driving the car for past one week, put over 500 miles on it and it drives excellent. No drifting even with balding tires, no squeaks/rattles. What's your opinion. Thanks in advance.

As fate has it. Had a guy call yesterday. He was looking at an '05 with only the Premium Pkg. for $36,500 at a local dealer. After all of the "wonderful" dealer fees, he would have been paying over $37k. So I came down to $39k (which is where I was thinking) and we are going to the credit union tomorrow.

    Thanks for your thoughts though.

In VA ... we have a 02 Envoy SLT 4WD, V6, we got the no-sale green with the tan guts, we have the hole in the roof, the Bozo sound, boards, bun warmers, rubber is ok and we have a few little snake bites and the miles are on the low side ...... "like a broken record" - if it's nice, clean, no I wear my pocket knife in the seats, no hail damage, no repaints, no soccer Mom interior, just a nice Envoy ... then trade side, low to mid $15's, might "could" maybe find a dealer to waddle up towards the $16 figure .....

Let me know how it goes ....

called on a no-sale-green Ranger XLT ECab with 70k yesterday... mostly for the heck of it... 4cyl stick 2wd, reportedly in good shape w/ new tires... asking $6 and let go for $5,250 within two days of the ad appearing.
Methinks it musta been a nice one, and also that someone got a lot of $$ for a 7-year-old vehicle. It's that $5k sweet spot again...

This is in mid-MI, as usual. Currently showing a slightly red tinge, but sure to be light blue when the night is up... for what it's worth. The real action is elsewhere.

               $18,300 ..?

Do you know what I like about this vehicle.? ... Nothing.! .. it's got more paint and body work than Dolly Parton, it's got parts, it needs work and good quality sneakers ........ unless you can "flat" steal this puppy, I would just *pass* on it .. I bet the dealer didn't put a dime more than the $15's in it and the $16's would flat kill it, sounds like 44k rough miles ....

........ I think thats a real good bet .. I love Honda's, but the new body style just doesn't pull the numbers that the old one did .... so, $16 and $17ish difference on a push, I doubt they will run the Camry thru the auction .. they can clean it, drop an Ad and have 10 salesman calling old customers for a cheapy - it won't last 3 days on their side, so they get a nice trade and Mom gets a new driver ..................... :)

LOL, Don't I know it. It's how you yank it out of the billfold at the right time... it's all in the wrist.

I'm more in the exploratory stage... I'm finding I like these dudes, and then I'm thinking if one follows me home, the Mrs. will grab it and that's the last I'll see of it, so why bother... Nice little trucks, though.

The reg cabs are a nice, tidy size that can just sit at the edge of the driveway and not be in the way in the winter, if you know what I mean...
99 red 3.0 V6 auto, 61k miles, 2nd owner, XLT with power stuff and tonneau; bald tires, looks good runs good no paintwork...

Problem is they're *asking* $6,4 & I'm thinking IF I buy it I don't want to own it for more than $5, and maybe that should include the tires... it's six years old, it's a regular cab, the frame is getting rusty, this is MI... where do they get these #'s from?

Thank you for your time and professional opinion on this car. I'm not quite ready to sell it yet but when I do I will let you know. Will probably sell it private and see how it goes.

In the city of a great quarterback and no team .l.o.l.... good description, thanks ..... the miles are semi-tall, it's the 4wd Limited, color is ok, auto, no smoke, it's washed, it's serviced, it sounds maintained, no runs/hits or errors ....... ya know, I never thought these things would make it in the market, but they are well liked and the reliabilty factor has been strong .. if it's a nice one, no chads hanging from the mirror .. then trade side, in and around the low to mid $15's, might maybe "could" get a dealer to wander towards the $16 figure, maybe ....... the "new" S40.? .. Volvo has a home run vehicle going on there, tell us how you like it ......................... : )

Thanks for the info Terry. The used Libbys are stickered at 19,995 at the dealers around here so I was hoping I had a little wiggle room on the trade.

S40 ride is nice and it will be nice to be back in a car after 3 straight Jeeps. The breaking factor is how much negative equity I will have to eat.

Hey and don't knock those brownies. They will get it together one of these years. :)

I could really use some help in finding out what a good trade-in price would be on my Exp. I got a RIDICULOUS figure from the local dealership (at least by my standards), and need an experienced opinion :) Thanks so much, Phrekkle

    Terry,

I owe you an answer, no, actually I owe you a lot more for your thoughtful ( an accurate ) advice.

Here's the scoop on the numbers:

94 E320 ( 145K miles White/Grey, all records looks like '00)was worth $6150 on the barrel head. You tagged it. A dentist bought it as a replacement car for his college going daughter who powdered her last car.

The 99 Suburban ( 91K White/Beige, all records, LT 4x4 )was worth $11,250 to a hard working welder putting together the big electric power generating facilities Southern California needs.

I enjoyed both buyers, the sales, and will actually miss both cars.

I bought a '04 Denali (with Nav) for $46,250 and still look over my shoulder at an '02 LX470 - such is life. The Benz is being replaced with an '00 E320 (hey, I'm consistent!) for $18,720 with 72K and the standard list of Benz goodies. Of course I'm still looking over my shoulder at what I've coulda bought instead. And the understudy would be a ...'00 528/530 5-Series Bimmer...still consistent after all these years.

    Again, Terry, many thanks..... Mike

A couple of questions if you (or anyone) get(s) a chance:

Are you thinking of a 4WD in Michigan? If not, why? Also, have you driven any used Tacomas? I realize they're more expensive, but, besides the price, do you have any comparisons? I'm thinking of getting a small (used) 4WD p/u myself.

(I toy with the idea of getting a New Taco, but it would be a 2nd vehicle for me so that's a bit pricey. I wonder if the resale value would ultimately make it worth it tho).

    thanks, woody

Hi,I find myself having to sell My 2004 Durango SXT 4x4, after owning it for only 2 months. I bought it Brand New. I NEED to sell it in a hurry, and was thinking about taking it to a dealer to see what they will offer me. Here's the info. on it if someone could tell me what I could reasonably expect a dealer to offer me.
    Place: Mankato Minn.
    Color: Atlantc Blue
It has power seats, rear heat, tinted windows, the higher priced wheels (that i remember was an option),3rd row seat, Hemi, auto transmission, auto windows, the standard (i believe)radio with c/d and sound, cloth grey interior, towing pkg., the All wheel drive or 4 wheel drive option.
I have added chrome step bars on it that look nice, and have the dodge mudflaps(molded ones)
that I ordered that I just haven't put on yet.
It has the 7/70 Warranty and 7700 miles on it . Any help and info. would be greatly Appreciated !! I'm new to this so I hope I'm doing this OK... Thank you ! Lisa
