First is my 1991 VW Jetta GLI for trade or sale:
130K miles
4-door sedan, Black ext/Grey int
2.0l 16V-engine
5spd manual
Recaro seats (standard eqpt on that model-wish I could take them with me :-)
BBS Alloy wheels (also Std)
Sunroof
Power windows, mirrors & locks
Cruise control
Aftermarket CD player
A/C (needs a recharge)
Full-size spare, set of snows on steel rims, & car cover included
I'm the original owner, car has been well maintained with regular oil changes and all records kept. It's in very good shape, almost new tires, upholstery and carpet almost perfect, paint still shiny but a few cosmetic flaws (a few small dents/dings, drooping headliner, cracked trim pieces). Mechanically, it runs great. Online price guides are all over the place on a car this age. I did get one offer at a used dealer for $1400. I realize this may be a "you have to see it" case, but take a shot.
The car I'm looking at buying is a 2001 Saab 9-5 wagon:
33K mi
4-dr wagon, Black ext/tan leather int
2.3l low-pressure turbo (base engine)
4spd auto tranny
Saab Certified Pre-Owned
Car is pristine as far as I can tell; no major work done to it under warrantee. Edmunds, KBB and NADA differ on the wholesale price by $2500(!) but the average is about $15.5K. Add about $1200 for CPO warrantee and you're up to $16.7; asking price is $19,590. It's been on their lot for well over a month and they've dropped the price a couple times already. Where should I start my bargaining from?
Thanks for the advice.

60 miles north of Denver.? .. yep, I know where thats at ... we rode our scooters from Colorado Springs to Sturgis back in August, the views and the ride was great ....
Anyway .............. we have a 91 Jetta GLI with 130k, 4dr, handshaker, slider, power pack, power pack, weak breeze, you say it's been well "preserved" and the service is right .. trade side, in and around the $500/$1,000 zipcode ... the Saab has lower miles, auto and we have that CPO thing going on .. IF ~ it's nice, no paintwork, clean Carsmack, just a nice wagon .. then the dealer probably has the super tall $12's, low low low $13's in it - but lets add the CPO, then it probably hits the table at in and around the $14ish figure ..... you should be able to trade for your vehicle and the super tall $15's, low low low $16's *difference* ~ so your on the money ........ $19,950.? - great price if your Yasser Arafat ...
Let me know - Don't make me ride over there to find out what happens ..............

Silver outside, gray leather inside
Heated front seats
Power drivers side
Power moonroof, windows, locks

Traction control
Fog lights
51700 miles
Good condition - no dings, dents, etc. Nothing a good detailing wont clean
Tires, brakes and battery replaced in 04
Oil changes every 3k
KBB, Edmunds, and NADA are reflecting trade in values of approx 6200, 7000, and 7700 (not necessarily in that order) for good condition. I had a dealer offer 4800 and was going to try to come up to 5500. One dealer did offer the 5500.
When looking at the car for sale at dealers, cars with less options and more mileage are going for $9-10K+.
Any help you can give is appreciated. I have for sale signs in it and its listed on Cars.com and smartcars.com. KBB shows private party value of $8800 so I'm listing it at 8500.
Thanks,
Stacey
================================
Ok Stace, here's the deal .... there is 3 prices when someone sells a vehicle ..
There is an *asking*
There is a *liking*
There is a *taking*
Most dealers and/or private sellers will pick thru all the info sources and pick the highest price - and thats an *asking* price ... most dealers will use that figure because, "most" consumers want $11,000 for their $8,000 vehicle and that figure was based on the highest book value they could find - and 90% of the time, thats based on their pay-off (If I owe $11,000, then it has to be worth $11,000 - Wrong.!)
A *liking* price is usually what the seller has determined to be a good selling price, if he wants it to go bye-bye (depends on what book he's reading) and his ego doesn't get in the way ...
The *taking* price is "usually" the figure someone will take if it's been up for sale for a period of time, others have sold in the area, maybe a weather change is coming and perhaps this particular vehicle isn't as nice as all the others ....
Anyway ..... we have a 00 LS2 with 52k, 6 banger, 4dr, ABS, power driver, heated bun warmers, right color for anywhere, slider, power pack, foggers, plenty of these around .. if it hasn't been bouncing off any of the Wal-mart parking lots, no funny stuff in the seats and no repaints .. then trade side, in and around the tall $4's, low $5's .... so the dealers are right on the money and $5,5 seems to be all the money .. have you tried Retail Rd.? - ya know, $7,495 *asking* and probably see $6,5/$6,9 ....
$6,200/$7,700 ...? .. see if they will cut you a check for it, the books don't buy vehicles, dealers do .. dealers can buy loaded up 25k/30k LS2's at the auctions for the $6ish range ... and no, I don't know where KBB, Edmunds, and NADA get their figures at .. but rumor has it, they go to a Astrologist in France ..........

2004 Nissan Titan SE CC 4x4, V8/auto, Sedona (brownish red)/steel/sand interior, 15k miles, pwr windows/seat/mirrors(heated)/door locks, am/fm 6-disc, captains chairs, offroad pkg w/VDC, utility bed pkg, tow pkg (I think that's it). Interior is in good shape, still smells new, no barfing dog invasions or anything like that. Exterior is in good shape too.......hasn't been moosified. Needs rear tires (wouldn't trade it with its winters on only the summers), but fronts are good. Soooo, what do you think? I love that truck, but its loves Ed more. *pout*
They can't understand why I hesitate, the GSM told me to go pick out a new truck and he would do the deal today. Argh, I love my truck, darn thing anyway.
Weighing the pros and cons of buying a preowned Allroad or leasing a new vehicle. Though my research I have come to understand that the Allroad will no longer be in production after May 2005.
Is it foolish to lease or even buy this car now? Will the "deals" likely be MUCH improved as time goes on? We can be flexible with our time frame but I would LOVE to have a new (whether it's new or just new to us...) car with AWD for the winter.
See the 2004 Certified Pre Owned Audi Allroad we're considering below.
According to Edmunds this car new would invoice for $43,329 and would TMV for $45,108. The audi dealer is asking $38,795 which he says is negotiable. How do I figure out a fair offer?
We may need to look at a 2003 or 2002 Allroad to make it work in our budget. Does anyone have any concerns about the reliability of those model years?

Wife backed into a tree, replaced bumper and hatch, done by dealer about 2 years ago.
Someone just backed into left rear bumper replaced by dealer with a little body work 1 month ago.
Had AC repaired under extended warranty last year
Remainder of interior/exterior is good/ very good. Couple of minor door dings, I keep all scratches buffed out. Wash vehicle and detail often.
Looking at trading this for an '04 Durango at local Dodge dealer (where we bought van used) Durango is:
Limited, 2WD
Red, Hemi motor
DVD system
sunroof
chrome wheels
running boards
satellite radio
heated seats
split folding rear seats
MSRP is 37,980
i think the invoice is about 34,300 (dealer says 34,900 but I have not seen the invoice)
This is a demo with 3500 miles
also has billet grill and front window tint done by dealer. The dealer disclosed that one of the doors had to be repaired (reskinned) when someone backed into the door in a parking lot when being used as a demo. Dealer wants 33,900 with trade (allowing 7000 for the Van, we owe 9500) or 31500 without (drive out prices which includes ttl). I say hogwash. I think the van should be at least worth 9 on trade and if bought outright the Durango should be had for dealer invoice less the 5500 rebate/finance discount from chrysler less mileage (15 cents per?) less something for the prior damage (plus something for the grill and tint?). This is a great thread. Thanks in advance for your advice.
They spell Rolex R-O-L-E-C-K-S.
Does that matter?

Even though I don't do any of the legwork, I still enjoy seeing how people use the numbers they're given in here to get a good deal, so we all benefit from a return visit.

It's great that this one is certified (how much warranty does it actually have?); & the options list looks awesome. A couple of hundred posts back there was someone who got a killer deal on an Allroad, for around $33K I think, & it was maybe a year old?
I need some information for one of my "full-service" accounting clients.
This sweet, middle aged, blind lady (she has a driver) has a 2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo V6 2WD. It has leather, but no other significant options. It is gold with tan interior, both of which are in average condition.
She is looking to buy a 2001 Lexus RX300 with 2wd, white with tan interior. It has the leather package but no naviagtion or the super expensive stereo. It has 40K miles. It is certified at a Lexus dealer.
The dealer is saying $10,000 for the Jeep and $26,900 for the Lexus. This was the bottom line after negotiation.
Are they being fair to this nice lady?
I recently saw an ad in the local paper for a new 2004 X-type 3.0 for 27,900. With this in mind what should one expect to pay for a used X-type? The ones that I have seen advertised seem to be priced way too high considering what a new one is going for. I thought jaguars were supposed to have an awful resale value. Could you enlighten me on the real world value on these cars? I am in Pittsburgh.
Thanks.
Terry.
Terry.
Is this a factory "buy-back".? .. is Nissan and the Zone manager heavily involved in this deal.?
Dealerships just don't "eat" $5,000/$10,000 just so they can get invited to the Macy's Day Parade .. besides, it's not their decision ...... you need to make this issue more clear so I understand it better.
In the meantime .. I have always liked the Nissan products, they have always been a proven contender with bunches of miles of reliabilty .. but these Titans with lots of heavy use, just don't seem to be cutting the mustard ...
Anyway .......... it's a 04 SE CC, we have the 4x4 V8 and we have 15k on this bad boy, offroad and the quads ... they're doing the super tall $19's, low/mid $20's on a push - "if" they are super clean and they need -0- ........ what do you owe on this Moose killer.?
Terry.

Good description .. have you done this before.?
Actually the miles are low for the year, it's a 7 pass, rear breeze, 3.8, power pack with the quads and it has some new stuff .... you know the drill, runs like a top, no rust, no Scott Peterson interior etc, etc etc ... trade side, maybe the $1,5ish zipcode and $2,000 on a super push, depending on the blah blah blah of course .... Retail Rd, $3,900 *asking* and if properly done $2,9/$3,5 ...........

Thanks for the figures... I'll pass it along. That's pretty strong $$ for one of the bigger fiascos in the Ford stable.
The family who owns this one had good luck with it; first engine, no head gasket failure, no tranny repairs. If he's willing to let it go fer $2, I might get it as a canoemobile... anyone looking for a miled-up 99 Prizm in good shape? :-)

I doubt they will eat as much neg as I have in that truck. Holy cow, OUCH!! I rolled some neg from the Explorer over to the Titan (I know I know). Buying that Explorer sunk us, stupid thing to buy, now obviously the Titan has even worse resale than the Explorer had.
Well, I guess I can hope for a moose to step out in front of it and totals it. I'm so buried in it that I need 100 backhoes, some trackhoes, maybe a few earthmovers, and a whole lotta prayers to get out of it. Guess I'm gonna be buying an extended warranty and hoping for the best.
Thanks for the numbers. This same dealer offered $8300 for the Focus........now that I'm not buried in and that I don't want to trade in.
I'd love to find out this information if at all possible. Here's my info:
Location: Austin, TX
Year/Make/Model: 2000 Honda Civic Si
Body Style: 2dr coupe
Engine: 4 cylinder, manual
Driveline: FWD
Mileage: 55000
Color: Electron Blue (kind of a neonish blue)
No major options
Condition:
Unfortunately, the accident happened when my car was not at it's cleanest, so there's dust and you know, the normal grime inside that could be cleaned up with a regular vacuuming/armor-all session. There's some minor stains on some of the ground mats, but the seats and interior are in pretty good condition overall. Some very minor spots here or there but definitely nothing hugely noticeable in my opinion.
Exterior has a few dings here and there, I'd say maybe 4 to 5 tiny dings altogether (have to look at them from an angle).
The tires are fairly new - replaced in the past year.
Brakes are virtually new - replaced in the past couple months.
Maintenance done - oil changed every 3K miles. 30K mile checkup
No other damage, original title holder.
Looking at another 2004 Sienna (put into service 5 months ago) - this one an XLE. Pearl white paint, heated leather seats, all the air bags, VSC and traction control, 17" wheels, running boards, DVD player. No accidents, scratches, dents. 7000 miles. Located in Central FLA.
What is a fair private party sale price?
A similar 2005 would MSRP for about $34,500, invoice around $30,500. Figure a sale price of $31,500 + $699 ToyoGuard Package + $400 dealer fee = $32,600.
So, what do you think is a fair purchase price for the 2004 to make it worth while to buy that one vs. the new one???
Thanks!

Looks like you have been a little on the busy side.
I have a few cars to ask you about and you've always been a jewel, so thanks in advance.
The first one is the neighbors, 01 Chevy prizm, 31k, silver with grey cloth, LSI, auto, power windows, locks, cruise, tilt, cd, abs, side airbags, alloys, new tires and serviced at 30k, no crashes, 1 small ding, nice, no smoking allowed.
The second one is a 04 Mitsubishi Outlander, 9,100 miles, 4x4, XLS, auto, power everything, 4 cylinder, roof rack, sunroof, two tone silver, leather, cd, it's supposed to have all the options, also clean and no accidents or creases.
I hope I didn't miss anything, I have the day off and I don't want to spend it in my room.
As always, you are a huge help!

Will cost me $2500 (difference in MSRP between the trucks) more than what I owe on mine to step up to a new 2004 CC LE 4x4 big tow pkg, utility bed pkg, no offroad though. The new truck is a white LE, leathered up with 45 miles on it. Thinking about doing this tomorrow. What do ya think?
The Nissan tech found most of the problems with my truck, but like he said, he would take the new one in a heartbeat. The new 04 has a later build date after the shakeup in Cantan, seems to be a major improvement, didn't drive like it was 10 years old and gonna come apart.
$4 big ones.? .... you got the money - All the money.! ..... you can never complain about that deal ... enjoy the new one.!
Terry.
Ok, lets see if I have this right -- forget the pay-off (OUCH.!), forget the taxes, forget the MSRP, forget the smoke and mirrors ............ forget ALL that stuff - (and pretend it's not there) ..
How much would you write them a check for, right now, right here, with pen in hand, for the ~ DIFFERENCE .........? - not how much your financing ..

Just take off the extras you added if it makes sense (like the tow controller).
You can also decide which wheels to sell it with. Keep the big ones and let them have the smaller ones, since the new one comes with that size anyway, right? You either have to get new snows now, or regular tires in the spring (depending on what you trade it with).
If it was me, I would do it for the peace of mind, and to save trips to the dealer (100 trips will make your money back in gas alone).

I dunno, if they won't let you wait or order a 2005 model (even if you agree not to mile up your old one), and the 2004 has all the stuff your current one has plus more, I'd probably bite the bullet.

It's "Mucho" easier for you guys to drop me *all* the info on a repost .. it makes me feel like I'm at a Kite contest and I can't find my string ...........
But anywhooo .... the Allroads are very popular vehicles and they do get some money ....
These are kinda funny dudes, they're kinda like Acura's - the new TL's are out and running and the "old" styles still see some big cake .. some guy just posted here he paid $27 new, and sold it for $23ish 2 years later ... so even with the new ones coming out, I doubt it will effect it that much and they are not distressed merchandise ....

Hey hurricane dude, I've got one that needs your expert analysis.
It's a 2002 Acura RSX (not an -S) with the 4 banger and the Sport Shift slushbox. Color is Desert Silver (the darker one), with gray cows inside. Has all the regular goodies, roof, CD, etc. No nav. In the neighborhood of 28,xxx miles. Immaculate condition. Hovered in, to use the parlance of our time. Sneakers show plenty of tread. One small dent in the nose to get fixed.
Last winter it caught a piece of flying ice on the highway, resulted in a decent sized dent on the hood that required a $600 pull and paint.
Located in the home of the soon to be World Series Champion Cardinals.

Hurricane dude..? had to wrap up the properties, boat, bikes, my favorite Wayne Newton albums .. bud, this is the TWIN to what happened 5 years ago (almost to the week) with Floyd, we will be buggin' out tommorow morning ..

New rear disks/pads

Interior is filthy---I think there will be some stains on the carpet and rear seats even after I shampoo it. Rear ashtray is broken ($165 at dealer to get a new one). Also---the kicker---my wife scratched up the r rear door and r rear quarter panel. Looks pretty minor, but I got estimates between $1700 and 3200 to get it fixed. Haven't fixed it.
So---what's it worth to a dealer? Should I fix the body damage, or can a dealer look beyond that?
Thanks,

Looking forward to your response, Thanks!

Your never a pest .. a repost is a good thing, a "repost repost" is even better ... hey what can I say, I have an attention span of a aspharugus .......
It's an 04 (not a *T6, right.?) AWD with 18k, we have the Prem pack, 3rd seat, bun warmers, slider, those cute little wipers, sounds like it has all the good stuff .... miles are a little on the tall side, the color is right, if the history and the service is 100%, no paint, no K-mart collisions .. dealer probably paid the $30/$31 range for it, so lets figure a little this and that and it probably hits the table at the mid/high $32ish range .. add the CPO and your lookin' at the mid/high $33ish range -- fair for both.? ... with the CPO, then $36,0 would be all the money ~ nice vehicle, but the miles hold this one back .............
Let me know what happens ...!
Terry.

-1 owner, all service records, regular oil changes.
-Pretty clean, never any paint or body work, just normal parking lot kisses (some touch up paint evident). Shows nice when its freshly washed.
-Cleans up fine in/out, but shows 6 years of use inside (sports cleats, etc).
Really needs nothing that I know of.
Wife wants a new Odyssey, will do retail road but prefer to trade it in.
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
Anyway, the new one would be a lease, lower amount of interest, and the ability to drop it off at the end. Its a longer lease than I like, but the payment stays the same and in 48 months we either pay the residual ($17,200) or we walk away. Being that the Titan is our toy now (extra vehicle), leasing doesn't bother me, we are putting about 1k/month on it now.
At the end of the lease on the LE we would owe $17,200 if we wanted to buy the truck........at the end of 48 months in the loan on ours if we didn't pay extra we would owe $18,200. So, its really a wash if I look at it this way.
