Long time lurker, 1st time poster,
I was hoping to get some lease info from you about a couple of different cars.
Can I have the residuals and moneyfactors based on 24/36 mos and 15k/yr for the following cars:
04/05 Lexus IS300 5-spd
04 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 2wd v6
04/05 Audi A4 1.8t fwd&quattro
Thank you so much in advance!! This will really help
I wish there more posts here about more high end cars, 911's, Vettes, old bmw's, etc.........
Today I looked at a terrific house FS in a nice town near boston. In the GIGANTIC 2 car garage was a silver E55 AMG. The realtor & I were drooling over the car, the garage, & the house.
Now I'm wondering what the guy would take for the house, WITH the E55? Now, is that a good topic for discussion, or what? Terry, do you know Boston area real estate????? :-)
PS: this wasn't a big negotiating issue -- it was a quick offer/counter offer and deal is done. We have enough Honda dealers in upstate NY that these are commodity vehicles... it's a good car but not a high demand/low supply item.

What does your expertise indicate as a fair price? Thanks as always

Anyway .............. we have a 91 Jetta GLI with 130k, 4dr, handshaker, slider, power pack, power pack, weak breeze, you say it's been well "preserved" and the service is right .. trade side, in and around the $500/$1,000 zipcode
=======
The Jetta got good reviews, offer $1100 (vs. strong $1300-1400 from some lots). But considering I could probably get $2K+ for it, I couldn't leave a grand on the table and I'll sell it myself, no prob.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-
First thing I did was put a "For Sale" sign in the window--$2750--car is on a nice busy street. Not 90 MINUTES after the sign goes up, a guy calls from the curb and wants it. Quick spin around the block, and he's sold. Came by today with $2550 cash.
Whew. Had to call and cancel the classified ad before it even ran. Probably shoulda asked more for the car. :-)

Hmm, thats a Very good price, considering the dealers are paying the high $10's low low $11's for the clean ones with the same miles - the word being here is "clean" ...... sniff sniff sniff ..
Terry.
----------------------------------------------
Right in one.
It's NOT clean. In fact, it's semi-filthy.
It's been vacuumed, and that's it... didn't smell like smoke until I turned the rr heat on. Also, the seats are somewhat grimy and pretty worn... nothing broken, mind you, but no beauty queen either. At least it's not armor-alled and air-freshened... yech.
EVERYTHING works, and there's been no paint or body work. Drives very nicely, no noises, no nothing, ABS works, light show comes on when you turn the key, goes off when the engine starts. And he's really asking $10,500 for it, if you ask twice.
Indy UC lot, the guys are friendly and upfront; they also sell on ebay, good feedback. Now, do I want this one...? Will the smoke smell eventually come out completely or am I stuck with it?
There's a lot to be said for a car that's right here in front of me to touch and drive and see and hear... There's also a lot to be said for an 01 Sienna for ten bucks...
It will have to pass the missus test, however...

Thanks for your insight. I worked a Randy Johnson/ NY Yankees type deal with my guy last night. Actually it was quite easy, I spelled out everything I wanted and my salesman said deal. Took all of 15 minutes- over the phone! How does it sound?

I'm beginning to learn somethign: The nice ones ARE worth the extra money.
Still and all, with all the apparent hard use, the mechanicals and electrics were in great shape. It's not that I *like* Toyota all that much, but they build cars the way Mercedes used to...

I read a lot of your posts, here and else where, it's now finally my turn to ask you the value of my car, thanks in advance.
Location: Irvine, CA
Model: 2002/Ford/Mustang premium
Style: Coupe
Engine 3.8 Liter.
Mileage: 45,000
Color: White exterior/beige interior
Options: Mach Audio 460, 6 CD changer, rear wing, 16' in wheels, power driver's seat. I added tint window on my own.
Condition: Would have been excellent, but I do have a quite noticeable dent on the driver's door, I wax it regularly, still very shiny.
Interior is also in a very good shape. I am not a smoker, no cats and dogs.
Tires- I would say 75% new.
Brakes- Changed all 4 brakes last month, so 95% new.
Maintenance- All but the brakes were done in dealership, all records.
Other: It is a manual, so I think that might hurt the value a bit, the car is nicknamed "Stangzilla"... not that it matters.
Thanks for your time in advance!
Terry.
I have received some shockingly low trade-in estimates. How much is your estimate and am I wasting my time trading when I should be selling this car privately?
Thanks

Austin city limits.? .... no Quattro, right.? ... it's a triple black El Coupe' in Texas, we have 50k, Bozo sound, needs some round things, interior is starting to get that Jenny Craig look ..... if the rubber is deep (Not) no paint work, no curb burners, no my neighbor has a Swiss Army knife in his back pocket and he's sitting in my car thing, and the service is up to date ... then trade side, in and around the super tall $8's low low $9's, depending on the dealer and the condition, you might see the mid/tall $9's, but I'm not getting any warm and fuzzy feelin' based on your description, so I'm thinkin' $9,0 would be just about all of it .. the miles, the color, the wear and tear and no Quattro is not your friend here ..... what figures are you seeing.?
Down Retail Rd, finish any service, a new set of quality round things, history in the glove box, a superb detail by a pro, a Fat Daddy 5/6 liner Ad in the Austin paper, $13,900 *asking* kick and scream at the first El Casho deal of $12,5/$13,5 - but take it .....
Let me know how it goes.!
Terry.
$2,550 cash ...? ... you did good, Real Good.!
**Probably shoulda asked more for the car. :-)**
You sound like my neighbor who just sold his busted-out boat for "all the money" and still thinks he should have gotten more for it ..l.o.l... sometimes do to barometric pressure, the alignment between Venus and Mars and Sun Spots, things happen ...... $2,500.? you did good.!
Like my Great Grand Daddy used to say -- you can be a Lion and you can be a Tiger ~~ but never be a Pig .................
Merry Xmas and Happy New year.!

what do you think on trade or private sale--is there a resale market of this type of vehicle?
===========================
Aaah Phoenix, some great golf courses out there, I should be in the Camelback area in a few weeks to see how many balls I can lose ....
Anyway, we have a rwd FX35 with 21k .. we have the right color inside and out, miles are tall for year, we have the Disney package and the Pac man stuff ... if we have no Maaco visits, no Close Encounters of the Walmart kind, no 350lb friends in the back seats .... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $27's, might "maybe" find a dealer that will waddle up to the $28ish range, maybe .... down Retail Rd, clean it, Ad, nice words, big story, $31,900 *asking* and cut and snip at the first $30/$31 .......
Terry.
I'm guessing from some of the other posts that these are a "tuff sell down Retail Rd" because a newer Honda hasn't depreciated that much, & you can buy a brand new one for a couple $$K more? Is that correct, or is it more to do with that particular model Civic? So much for my theory that all Hondas would do well " on Retail Rd"......
>>$13,500 is a-l-l the money, and these are a tuff sell down Retail Rd .. what can you ask without making a planter out of it

Tires: two new, one 1-yr-old, one needs replacing in the next yr.
Brakes need replacing soon
No other issues, damage or repaints.
thank you!
Read post #20851 and take out a great ad after a proper detailing (if needed).
By the way - this: "Tires: two new, one 1-yr-old, one needs replacing in the next yr" is a major no-no on an AWD car - get 4 that match...
Also, doing the brakes is a cheap way to be able to say the car is "ready to go skiiing" or whatever - a decent set of matching tires and new brakes will add MAJOR dollars to what you pull in from a private buyer.
150k mile Audis put fear in the hearts of men.
Sell it on the street, $4-5 should be doable -- if it's really nice. Mind you, not $4000 of MY money.
When you look at a luxury car that, uh, "mature", the question isn't all the stuff that's in good shape. You know, it runs great, the leather is really nice, and I got new tires on the left side, that sort of stuff.
The question is, what's gonna break within a year, and what's it gonna cost to fix it. If that timing belt goes, it's bye-bye Audi, 'cuz it ain't worth throwing another engine in. You look at the car, it is what it is, and now you ride it out and only fix if necessary.
This ain't Cuba, new ones are readily available. I do agree with drift, the tire business is a no-no. Rotate often, replace at once; your quattro will thank you.
-Mathias
Good advice above.. new brakes, tires and send it off to a new owner for $4500...

Just to play devil's advocate vis-a-vis the other advice given here: Personally, I'd take the $2700 & "run like a thief", before Carmax changes their mind. One new tire = $100 +or-.
Brake job on an Audi==who knows? My last "brake job" on a Saab ended up costing me $1000. Unless you're SURE it just needs pads, & you have an iron-clad estimate. Time & sanity spent selling a 150K Audi privately==What??? And is there a "lemon law" for private sales in your area?
Let the people at carmax deal with trying to squeeze an extra $1000 or so out of this thing........
Just my 2 cents.
My car:
2002/Honda/Civic

Silver exterior/Black cloth interior
Options: moonroof,cassette,single CD player
Condition:
One tiny ding on the right door, minor scratches
Tires, 50% worn
Brakes, 60% worn
Dealer maintained up to schedule, with all paperworks/receipts/window sticker
Has two minor accidents in parking lot, one was hit&run by an unknown person, causing a dent on left front bumper, another one was other party's fault damaged on right rear fender. All fixed by bodyshop, can hardly see if I won't tell.
I tried carmax, they offer $11,000. Do you think this is a fair price? Zipcode:95661
Hi guys, I'm looking at a couple of pathfinders. The first one is a '99.5 LE, with 79k miles on it. It's fully loaded with leather, heated seats, bose sound, moonroof, etc. The price the dealer has on it is $14,950. The second is an '02 SE 5 speed, not as loaded up but still quite nice, 35k miles, for $17,900.
My questions are, do these sound like good prices? What are known problems to look for when trying one out? What major services have to be done to them? I have a '99 Explorer that I can't wait to get rid of, and it needed a transmission fluid change at 30k, ect. I have heard about the timing belt having to be changed, a water pump having to be put on, stuff like that.
I have a friend who has an '88 Pathfinder with, as he calls it, "over a quarter million miles," or in laymens terms about 260k. He also has a '96 Pathfinder with about 105k on it. He swears by Nissan and will not own anything other than a Nissan or Toyota, and possibly a Honda.
I'm also looking at 4Runners as well. They're a little more expensive, and most of the ones I've seen have higher mileage than the Pathfinders. I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions. Thanks!
My trade:
Location: Winston Salem, NC
Year/Make/Model: 1999 Ford Explorer XLS
Body Style: 4dr SUV
Engine: [4.0 V6, 4 sp automatic w/OD
Driveline: 4wd
Mileage: 50,400
Color: [exterior: Dark Orange/interior Tan/khaki]
Major Options: Pwr Windows, locks, mirrors, am/fm/cd (single), cruise, A/C.
Condition:
Details of interior and exterior, including dings, scratches etc.
Tires - cupping, but only about 1/2 worn
Brakes - new bendix pads were put on front in March '04, at 44k
Maintenance: maintained regularly, all recalls, transmission service at 36k, wiring harness melted due to hot lamp at garage doing the recall work, was replaced under Costguard warranty, new spark plugs at 42k, oil changed every 5k.
Other: Indicate prior damage/insurance claims, repaints, etc: none.
I'm also considering a 4Runner. I found a '99 with 138k miles, SR5 Sport for $12,650.
Also considering another '02 Pathfinder SE 5 speed with 35k miles for $17,900.
My first question is which 4.0? OHV or OHC? The puhrod motor is pretty much bulletproof; the cammer is the one with timing chain issues. There is a silent recall on that problem though.
In any case, mine went for $8500 private sale, which extrapolating here in the NE, means $9500 dealer, and in the high 6's to low 7's dealer trade. This one, besides being plain white, was also a higher trim with the V8. Yours is an XLS painted metallic pumpkin. Terry was spot on estimating what I would end up with for a sales price, BTW.
As for used, I'd go for the newest, lowest mileage within reasonable price model. Pathfinders are probably going to be comparatively cheaper than 4 Runners. With some negotiation, that '02 stick strikes me as not a bad deal. But wait for Terry, the man with all the info.
And idntnvu [nice handle!], I agree you're not gonna like the numbers on the Explorer...
Neither one of the two gems you found strike me as good deals... $12+ for a six-year-old 138k ANYTHING is ridiculous.
The Pathy is going to be likely the most car for the money, but resale on it is going to be very difficult... Keep it forever and negotiate it down -- this one's a very odd duck -- and you may be okay.
How about another couple years in the Explorer?
Just kidding, I'm a CCBA charter member myself.

I'm going today to look at the 2 pathfinders, but I'm more than likely not gonna do the deal today. I'm gonna see if it's what I want, and I have a feeling I'll end up going with a Pathfinder eventually. I'm taking the Explorer to have ball joints put in next week, but I thought if I found something I liked this weekend, I'd ditch the Explorer and wouldn't have to bother with the ball joints.
I liked the 4Runner, but like you said 6 years old and 138k miles on anything is a stretch. It wouldn't be paid for until 2010, when it'd then be 11 years old.
Probably the best course of action for me now is to just hang onto the Explorer a little longer until "the right one" comes up. I'm gonna start saving up for a bigger downpayment too because right now I have nothing than the trade.
Mine is the OHV 4.0. I've heard it's a really good engine, but what good is an engine gonna do me if everything else goes out on it?
I have an antifreeze leak somewhere, because I can smell it, and over time my resovoir will be empty. Haven't located that yet.
It sounds like you really want a Pathfinder......if so, just find the nicest, lowest mileage one you can for the least $$$.

You sound like my neighbor who just sold his busted-out boat for "all the money" and still thinks he should have gotten more for it ..l.o.l...
=====
Yeah, I was joking... kinda. You should have seen the guy who bought it--he was practically drooling looking at the car. If I were normally a car salesman, he'd be the kind of customer I'd be drooling over. :-) And I certainly can't put a price on selling a 14-yo car in 90 minutes!
Thanks again for all the help on this and the other boards. When you only buy a car every 14 years or so, there's a lot to learn.
I was supposed to go to try out the Pathfinders today, but the lot with the '99.5 closed early without notice, and when I called the guy at Modern to see if the '02 had been brought over, he informed me that someone else's name was on it, although they hadn't finalized the deal yet, they didn't want to sell it out from under them. So, I'm still left with only an impression of the Toyotas. Right off the top of my head, I can say that they are hard to get into and out of, and the seats are very uncomfortable, especially for someone my size. The seat and driving position felt as if it was made for someone tall and skinny with short arms. Both the '01 and the '99 I drove felt the same.
I've read several reviews, and from them I gathered that the '01 and up was a great improvement over the '99.5 and '00 models. I am a power freak, so I definitely want the 3.5 with 240 horses. I've been itching for something with power since my dad sold his old '84 Mustang GT. I'd still have to drive both an automatic and a manual to figure out which one I'd rather have. Before I got the Explorer, all I wanted was a manual, but I've come to find out that the automatic is pretty handy.
I've made my mind up, I'm going to have the ball joints replaced this week so that hopefully by the time I get ready to trade it off my tires will be wearing a little more evenly. I've also got a high pressure antifreeze leak that needs to be addressed, but I'm in no hurry to spend more money. Besides, it's all the more reason to make me want to get rid of it when I get out of it and smell antifreeze. I also want to get it paid down a little more so that I have a better chance at me actually owing less than it's worth, and getting a better trade.
Thanks to everyone for all the information. I'm sure you will see me back again in a couple of months, if not before. Ya'll have a great New Year!
Terry.

trade-in, you should expect around the tall $3k's, and maybe the low, low, low $4k's.
if the car is super-clean, the seats look hovered-in, and the used car manager smoked his lunch, you may see as much as $4.5k-$5k.
down retail rd, i would ask $6995, and grab the first $5.5k-$6k that comes along.
This is the part that'll make you choke:
"Although I paid $18,000 for the car, my insurance company paid me just over $9,000. It said something about "book value." The Chevy garage blamed the fire on a short circuit, but had no other comment. Is there any warranty covering such an event, and do I have any recourse?"
Basically, the car talk guys said:
1. No, you have no recourse.
2. You've won the lottery. Quit whining and get to the bank to cash the check before your insurance company comes to its sense.
