So... What do you think the dealer had in it? The body is spotless and it was a 1 owner vehicle.
I'm guessing ~$21/$22K + $500 to make it look nice + ~$1200 for the certification. Am I in the ballpark? BMWofA is offering 3.9% financing on all certified cars, so that made the decision little easier.

If --- we have no paint, no glue, no 400lb owners, no battles at Walmart, no Swirlomatic car washes and the service is from yesterday ... then trade side, in and around the super ultra tall $28's low/mid $29's, maybe might get a dealer to waddle towards the $30ish figure if it's stand tall, bullet proof, jam-up puurfect and it needs -0- ......
Great vehicle down Retail Rd, finish any service, a Jesse James detail, a Donald Trump Ad, $36,900 *asking* and wave goodbye at the first $34,9/$35,9 .... miles and the color could save this one ...

So, it turned out to be a nice car and a bit of fun to drive. I also tried out quite a few other vehicles today all over the spectrum. In addition to the A6 was a new Passat, Mazda6s, Accord Coupe 6-speed, S60 2.5T, and a used S80 T6. Believe it or not (I'm having a hard time believing it myself), the one that put the biggest smile on my face was *gulp* the Accord!
Anyway, as is typical, the dealer is pulling the "this is a rare car and i can't let it go for what you want to pay" card (although we all know that come trade time that rare car is now a burden rather than an advantage), so I don't think I'll be prying it from his hands anytime soon. ANYWAY, to get to the point, I'm hoping you can hit me with a number on my car again. I'm not sure when I last ran it past you and the number the Volvo dealer hit me with today pretty much bowled me over. So here it goes:
'98 S70 T5. auto. cowskins, bun warmers, trip computer, slider, knee deep in rubber, clean inside and out, had a $2K kiss to the fender quite some time ago and fixed top notch, service records on hand. And, for the big kicker ... 99K miles. oh, yeah, its that goofy coral red color over tan guts.
How about trade-in and possible "sell-it-myself" price? Thanks again. I'm really hoping I can show some self control and wait another year before taking the plunge, but my alter ego can sometimes take over for a full weekend, and by the time I get back all the liquor is gone, the toilet is overflowing, and I'm walking funny, so who knows what may happen next.

10 years ago we used to laugh at the 2 "S's" - Saabs and Subaru's, 10 years later we just laugh at the Saabs .. you can get some religion from those silly Subu's, I've been up there in the snow and when your passing Quattro's, Nav's, Range Rovers, Burbs and Land Cruisers in 15" inches of snow, then you know Subaru has kinda got that AWD thing down to a science .. and I do like the new body style on the 05's ..........

Grey side cladding looks great with a few coats of armor all
Interior: a couple of small gouges in the plastic on the back door, but other than that perfect, have had rubber mats in it since I got it with 31k on it, vacuum it out every few months, etc.
Tires - cupping, but only about 1/2 worn
Brakes - new bendix pads were put on front in March '04, at 44k
Maintenance: maintained regularly, all recalls, transmission service at 36k, wiring harness melted due to hot lamp at garage doing the recall work, was replaced under Costguard warranty, new spark plugs at 42k, oil changed every 5k.
Other: Indicate prior damage/insurance claims, repaints, etc: I forgot this in the last post, I had one insurance claim on the windshield. Erie covered it. Had a chip filled in.
I've cooled down my search for a replacement somewhat, but I pretty well decided on a '01-
'02 Pathfinder SE.
That brings up another question, what do you (anybody, not just Terry) think of buying a vehicle off of eBay? I found a really nice '01 SE w/ 68k miles, 5 speed, 4wd, slider, bose 6 cd, etc in Richmond. It's got 6 days left on it.

For starters, eBay is great .. but trying to save ones self $500 or a $1,000 by "super shopping" and looking for a vehicle that is 400/600/800 miles away, can be the Kiss of death ... it's kinda like a bad dating service, why is someone looking for a blonde in Pittsburg when they live in Atlanta, or vice versa .. look at all of the nice local vehicles on eBay, something you can get the feely touchy thing going on and you can get a pro to look at .. now, if your lookin' for a Porsche 996 or a 67 Cheetah coupe you might have to drive/fly some miles ..l.o.l.....
Anyway ... based on what your telling me, this Exploder sounds like the mid/tall $4's low low $5's come trade side ... me personally, I would be sending this dudette down the path to Retail Rd, $8,490 *asking* and wave bye bye at the first $7,0/$7,9 .... it's winter and it's a 4x4, properly done I bet it won't last long ..
PS: Pathys are nice vehicles, but 70k..? .. it's a $9/$10 vehicle on the dealer side and a $12ish deal on the retail side, the miles and the handshaker is kkkilling it ....

This Honda has some loooow miles, it's an LX, right color for anywhere (auto/4dr.?) ... if we have no hits no runs no errors, no terrorist interior, just a real nice vehicle ... then trade side, in and around the super ultra tall $13's, low/mid $14's, might maybe find a dealer that will hang himself and stretch towards the $15 figure .. it's just that there is t-o-n-s of Accords in the market right now .......

Take your average "$14 even", its show Honda does hold their value even with "t-o-n-s of Accords in the market".
One more question my Accord is one of the few percentages that were built in Japan. I am curious that does dealer look at little thing like where it was built? and willing pay a little more for it (I did when I bought it)
If everything goes well, I will buy a 05 Mazda6 6speed Auto next week.

From what it looks like, I'm better off to hold on to the thing and maybe consider trading next year, even if the transmission goes out on it. I've got the Costguard bumper to bumper til it hits 67k, of course for "failures only." After having FAILED ball joints and a FAILED cylinder, the only thing they covered was the wiring harness. I'd be losing money any way I turn on this deal, or would I?
I think I'll attempt to double up on the payments and see where I stand come summertime.
By the way, Hillsville is just up the mountain a piece from the NC Line, about an hour from Winston Salem, NC. Hillsville is the home of the famous annual Labor Day Gun Show and Flea Market, and neighboring Galax is home of the annual Old Fiddlers Convention.

It looks nice (to me), & the seller has a really good feedback rating. Kind of high-ish miles tho. (Always good to post the URL so others can look at it).
That one is quite nice, and a person could probably get a good deal on it. The only thing I noticed in the pictures that I didn't like was some scratches on the back bumper. I found a few others with lower mileage closer to my area (45 minutes to an hour from here), 2000s and 2001s with 48k to 58k miles. They're all retail though, and high at that. One identical to the one in the link with 15k less miles was listed at $19,900.
I would like to drive a 5 speed to compare it with the automatic, but they're so hard to find I probably wouldn't be able to. Also according to Terry, the "handshaker" detracts value. I'm so used to driving with the automatic now I don't really care, just always liked a 5-speed. It has its ups and downs tho.

Actually ... your not in bad shape with the pay-off, your about even if you went down Retail Rd .. most consumers owe $15,000 on their $10,000 vehicles or they owe $40,000 on their $25,000 driver, pick your poison .. then they get a "Real-World Trade-In Value" - they cough, they sputter, they probably think "he's nuts", and pull a Nada figure and go after the dealer with that ... 2/3 months later after they shopped 8/10 dealers and 20 annoying "Blaster" emails, I get a "quiet email" from them: that they owed this and that and they're flipped in their vehicle and thanks for the help ....
The Pathy looks nice, right color combo, has cleaned up real well ... what hurts this dude is, not so much the high miles (it does) but the handshaker just flat kills the values of SUV's (and most sedans and coupe's) but SUV's take a whoopin'.! and if this dude had 2drs you could use it as a planter come Easter .. Now, this doesn't make them bad vehicles, it just makes them "undesirable" to the vast majority of buyers, kinda like a 4 bedroom house with 1 bathroom ... I love the sellers Ad, "rare, hard to find" -- you betcha .. who was the original dealer who ordered this one, Jerry Seinfeld..?
The point is, if you can buy them cheap enough, then they can make a good buy - just remember that at trade time .................

I was right on the money with the retail price I was thinking of asking (actually, i was even going to start a bit lower), so at least I was prepared for that.
Kinda funny aside. When talking to the Volvo dealer, my comment to him (as he was talking up the Volvo brand) was how disappointed I was in the resale value. He scoffed at me and proclaimed how strong the resale value is .... then proceeded to hit me with mid-$4K on my car. ..... uhhh.... hmmmmmmmm....

Whats a better deal ..? .. it's hard to say, it's kinda based on your likes and dislikes .... door #1: has a CPO, less options, more miles and the color is ho-hum but probably popular in your area .... door #2: no CPO, more options, less miles and a better color come sale time ... so what price glory.?
Depending on how long these dudes have been sitting, the dealers probably paid in and around the $51/$52 figure for em' .. add a little service, a little CPO action, a this and a that and they probably hit the table in the $53/54ish range ... the new "7's" are a little hard to sell, new or used, I would think you could buy either one of these for the $56/$57ish range ....... remember, these things don't have a great reliabilty factor due to the door knob in the console and tech issues - a CPO or a extended warranty is a must .............

they have built hondas in ohio for almost 25 years. saying japanese-built ones are better or worse is a lie either way.
For a $3K spread on a car under $10K, I would have to sell it myself...

yeah, I made that exact mistake. I thought if I sit out the "higher depreciation years" that I could do pretty well in the car's later years. Obviously not true. Oh well, live and learn. Its one of the key reasons I decided against that Audi A6. I don't want to make the same mistake twice.

Then why do the dealers keep such a tight hold of the Black Book or auction prices? I don't see why it helps them. For every customer they successfully lowball because he can't find the true tradein value, I'd think they would lose five or six deals where the customer thinks he's being lowballed but isn't.
Therefore, I was wondering whether we are upside down since VW does not appear to have a good resale value. Here are the details.

We don’t intend to run out and trade the car in but would like to accelerate the payment if need be (I don't particularly like the idea of rolling in neg equity, kinda makes my skin crawl). Also, I know resale value can not be predicted but from what some of you have stated you wouldn't’ touch an Audi or any other European brand that is out of warranty so if you were in our position would you plan on trading the car in prior to the warranty running out or does that make much of a difference?
