FWIW, that's the way I would have speced out the VDub.
Also, if you have the money to accelerate the payments, don't worry about negative equity. You could always put in the cash at trade-in time if you would rather hang on to it now (best option probably depends on the APR and your cash needs).
I want to sell my Jeep Gr Cherokee Limited, it's in good condition, I have had it for 3 years and no problems. It has a salvage title from a fire in the back of the car (previous owner). I am reluctant to deal with a private party and want to sell it aseasily and conveniently as possible. Best suggestion from anyone out there? Should I take it to a dealer? These are the stats on the car:
location: Boston, MA
1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited
4dr SUV
6 cylinder, automatic, 4WD all the time
72k miles
Burgandy ext/Black leather int
Good condition only a couple little minor dings
4 Brand new tires, new battery, regular maintenance
"as easily and conveniently as possible" + salvage + 1996 = not much
There are so many of these out there, I couldn't see a dealer offering very much. The low miles might save it as a private sale, but you will have to take the salvage title into consideration when you price it. That will scare a lot of potential buyers away.
On a purely financial basis, I think that you are crazy to sell it if your description is accurate. You are going to get almost nothing for it and it sounds like it is a pretty decent ride.
Personally, as a buyer, I am going to look at the salvage title and discount what I am going to pay BIG TIME. And what would the Explorer be worth with a normal title.
If I were in your shoes, I would suck it up and plan to drive the car until the wheels were ready to fall off.
just back from a full detail [$265 total, dent removal and full detail] really just a little ding and scrape

04 2wd Yota Sienna LE with 19k .. we got gray and some more gray, we got some of them wheel thing's, side balloons, one power door is better than none and you just had a visit with Dr Dent and a come to Jesus detail, sounds nice, miles are a little on the tall side ..... I read from your other post it's just a EL' Dingo, no biggie .. so, if it's as nice as you say it is, then trade side, in and around the super tall $19's, low/mid $20's, maybe the low low (did I say low.?) low low low $21ish figure depending on the dealer, maybe ... I see Yota just dropped a bunch of these dudes off in your region, so let me know what happens ..................................
Yeah, the flea market is really a curse for most of local yokels, but it does give some of us something to do in our own town one time a year for 4 days. It's getting to where you can't get good deals on anything anymore though. It's all junk and antiques.
Now, help me with something. When you say "down retail road," what exactly do you mean? Sometimes I'm rather slow on things, but I did catch onto what a "handshaker" was. Clarifying what you said, since one with a handshaker isn't as desirable, I "should" be able to get a better deal on it versus an automatic?
Thanks again for all your help, you really are an asset to Edmunds. From now on, anytime someone even thinks about getting rid of their vehicle, I'm sending them here.
well shoot, my daughter was born in 99, and she'll be in 1st grade this year... being 6 years old come June and all...
Seriously Terry, I've always thought a '98 would be "eight years old" in late August/early September of 2005, when the new ones appear. That's what I've always read, but I won't belabor the point anymore... maybe you're just 8 months ahead of the rest of us, I shouldn't wonder...
Thanks Terry, now for a dumb question. Is trade value off list price or if the Honda dealer said 1K over invoice does this trade value still hold? Also what about trying to sell it myself? How much and what advertising ave. is best, local paper, net?
You guys almost had a football team this year ....
03 Lexus RX300 4wd ... right color, all the good stuff, miles are almost okay, not much of a description here .... if it's knee deep in rubber, clean history, no visits to the spray and paint department and no hinky interior .. then trade side, in and around the super tall $24's, low/mid $25's .. I would think you could buy one for around the $27/$28ish figure - depending on the weather up there ........... what are they asking.?
..... Good math Mathias ... I'll try that line on the bank next month when they come and do my floorplan ..... "these 05's, they ain't a year old, so you can't charge me yet ......"
as soon as they hit the ground, the clock is a tickin' ... I'm driving an 05 now that's 5 months old ...
...... Sounds like it might be a nice driver ... but a salvage vehicle is worth -0- to a dealer, they might drop $500, maybe even $1,000 on a desperate day .. but that bad boy is going to the auction and has to be declared as a "salvage" title - and thats like the parting of the Red Sea ..... you need to sell this dude on your own, and make sure everyone is "aware" of it --in writing-- ... you know how conversations change over a card game ..........
$2,900 *asking* and blow and go with whatever the market will bare ...
I was thinking of buying a new Toyota D Cab. I have an 03 now. The problem is it was in a fairly significant crash a few months back. I was wondering if anyone had any advice or experience on how bad I can expect to get taken on the trade-in? Or advice on how to approach the trade-in? My truck looks good, too good the whole front end and right side are new.
... **The problem is it was in a fairly significant crash a few months back** ......... okay, I give up ... like what.? - and be pacific, and I don't mean the ocean ...
Thank you Terry. It is my friend's car and he will get M3 this June and asking me only dealer trade in value for his RX300 in June. So I want to know what will be the dealer trade in value of this car. Tires are new. No accident. Interior is clean. He had a very nice deal because of model change. Thank you for your information.- Han

Eagles territory .. SLT .? Right color, no miles, V6, 4wd, tow pack - what can I say, no miles and 3 months old .... if it hasn't spent 2 of those months in a body shop and it's new .. then trade side, in and around the tall $21's, low/mid $22's -- SLT XL, right.?
I guess what I'm trying to figure out is before I take it to the dealer...are the trade-in values you see in KBB, TMV, NADA etc a good guide to go by. The dealers use black book which I don't have access to. With my D-Cab being involved an accident that's considered a major collision how much the value has diminished? Does anyone have a similar experience?
Thanks Terry! Have you or anyone had any experience selling cars on eBay? looks like there are salvage title cars that sell and perhaps that might be an easy route to take. Just put it out there with a low starting bid and see what happens.

Thanks Terry,
Yes it's 2100 miles, no accident, but it's SLE XL with about $1100 in option. The window price is ~$35K. I got $10K off so my cost was ~$25K + tax and tag.
Seem your quote is for SLT...so this car is even cheaper...cannot believe I loss that much money in 3 months
About 2 months ago I traded in Altima 2003 2.5S (2 years with 20K miles) for a new 2005 2.5S with exact same option and I paid the diff. of $4K + tax and tag.
OK, so you have an '05 that is 5 months old... HOW? That doesn't jive with yer math there, Terry. It has to be 1 yr. and 5 months old. OR, does it simply jump a year when the '06s come out? Cause, when the '06 comes out 7 months from now, according to your math, your car will be 2 years old (I have an '05 and an '06 on hand, that's 2 years).

Sorry this is all new to me. Pensacola area, Tacoma, all power except seats, cd. Don't know what else to say than there aren't any dents, dings, scratches etc... garage kept, paint shines. As a result of the accident it has new windshield, front bumper, complete grill, headlights, radiator and support aprons, air bags, passenger side rear door. I spun the car that crossed my path around and her rear end hit my passenger side rear door. All has been repaired to the tune of $14K. Thanks Stoj

This is an off-topic question, but I'm new to your forum and don't know your procedure.
I have a red 2001 CL (NAV)with 106,000 miles. It looks better than most, but has carpet wear driver's side and 4 parking lot dings, one of them a half inch deep. No scratched paint, tho.
I'm near Boston also, & thinking of buying a winter vehicle for not too much $$. (Does it have winter tires?) E-mail me if you want (click on the "WoodyWW" to start).
Terry, thanks for the explanation, I've never traded a car of any value.
Yes, we do only pay the difference between what we sell and what we buy, if it's done within 90 days of each other. Thank God or I wouldn't even consider this. I'm just thinking the early 2004 Siennas are a little crappy and I would not feel too bad if my difference will only be 4-5K.
Thanks again for all your help, I'll put it in the Sunday Post Dispatch and see what happens.
May I e-mail you directly. I'm not very versed on all the rules and etiquette of these public forums and wouldn't want to push anyones buttons. You seem like a very knowledgeable and helpful contact.

What your looking for is the DIFFERENCE figure .. your van and "X" amount of bucks ...
Example only:
New car- $30,123
discount- $2,000
sales price- $28,123
=======
Now-
sales price: $28,123
trade: $20,000
*DIFF*: $8,123
plus the tax
plus the flea's
plus the pay-off
minus any rebates
=============
Not- $30,123
trade- $20,000
diff- $10,123
then, plus the other stuff ...... see, it's the Difference ..................
PS: if you take it down Retail Rd - $23,495 *asking* .. probably see $22,5ish ... don't you guys get tax savings in MO ..?
