Thank you everyone for the advice. (With all due respect to the host, the funny thing is I normally would side with you on the parenting advice in this forum. However, this time I don't mind a little bit of it because I intend to print out my question and the responses to show to my child.)

To those of you who responded with the parenting advice, you haven't told me anything I don't already know. I messed up years ago by being too soft a touch. My kid has a very low level of maturity in SOME areas, one of them being fiscal responsibility. At least I have been very lucky to make it to the age she is at now without drugs, promiscuity and such. I must be doing SOMETHING right.

In any event, I'm sure there will be some tears tonight, coupled with some screaming and yelling...BUT I WILL PREVAIL.

    Thanks again to all.

With all due respect, & I know you're a good host, but there hasn't been too much else going on here the past couple of days. And a lot of vehicle buying/selling decisions really do turn out to have very personal issues involved........all of these personal sagas are one of the great appeals of this forum, IMHO. (The topic "How the vehicle age is counted" doesn't do much for me personally, but it's easy to scroll past that).

    cheers, woody

It wasn't a request. There are other places in the forums that are appropriate (News & Views board), but this isn't it. Off-topic posts have been deleted.

Some other posts have been moved to Best Cars for Teens & College Students, which is a great place to discuss that issue.

In the land of the Ka-boys ... 02 CRV EX, we have the auto, 4wd, 46k, good color for the area, slider and the tires are almost okay ..... if it's clean, no visits to the paint parade, no Tsunami interior, just a nice vehicle .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $13's, maybe the low low low $14's depending on the dealer ....

Let me know what happens ..

                                   Terry.

I am going to list it in the paper for $16,500. I hope I can get at least $15,800 for it. given that trade-in is about $2000 less. I keep you updated. Now to find a detail shop.

I was going to trade my saab in but i couldn't believe the best trade offer I got was 16k. I have had the car for sale for 1 month for 18.5k, I have not received one phone call.

What the heck. This car stickered at 31k less than 2 years ago and is a pretty competitve car.

The car is a 6 speed manual, do you think that nobody wants sticks, or just nobody wants saabs.

....ok (uhmm..)....can you please start a topic then "real-world trade-in values, year of car" then, please move all those posts that were deleted over to that thread. I think its a very interesting and very relavent topic to trade-in value perceptions by consumers.

    thanks.

$2500 seems very generous for that car. It is a 4 banger 171K Camry. No large dealer will even touch it for resale, so off to auction it will go. The only thing keeping it from being a $1000 car with those miles for a 99 is the fact that it is a Toyota Camry. You would be hard pressed to be able to sell it private party with those miles for more than $3,000, even one owner Toyota Camry.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,335
Are there lots of miles on that SAAB? Funny color?

I'm thinking that Houston isn't really the best place to be selling that car, and the stick isn't helping.

But, if the miles were decent and the condition all there, I'd be calling you!

How about it bring it to NJ so I can take a look?

Looking to trade or sell myself.

2003 Nissan 350z Enthusiast located in Northern Virginia.

    6 speed manual

    15,000 miles

Silverstone (dark gray) over black cloth interior

Interior is in like-new condition. Exterior has no dings or scratches. Tires about 50%. All maintenance up to date. No accidents.

      Thanks in advance.

             ========================

Okay, back to the car stuff .. color is fine for the area, miles are nice and low, it's the "Enthusiast" package .... If ~ we haven't burned all the curbs in Verginny, no paint by numbers, no hinky stuff in the interior, looks/feels and shows like the mileage ... then trade side, in and around the super ultra tall $19's low/mid $20's, might maybe "could" find a dealer that will waddle towards the $21 figure, maybe .... down Retail Rd, superb detail, great Ad, $24,900 *asking* and the say goodbye at the first $23,5/$24,5 .. don't get greedy with these, it's winter up there and the miles will move it ....

This one wasn't a Toyota, but the other gold standard, an Accord, that stuck out while glancing at the Daily Rag classifieds a couple of weeks ago.

'95 EX 4-door with all that gets you, automatic, supposedly 1-owner with maintenance records. $5750/OBO.

    The kicker? 180,000+ miles. Yee-ikes!

I currently own (a VERY DEAR to me) 1988 Saab 900 Turbo convertable. Unfortunately the car has 153,000+ miles (don't know how many, the odometer stopped working right after I bought it -- or was on its way out when I bought it, but functioning enough that I did not notice for a few months) and it is developing its "quirks." I've put a couple thousand into in the last few months (the things you expect to go out-- alternator, starter, ignition switch and breaks) and have decided that as painful as it is to let go of, it is time to move on while I have the money for something newer (going to to med school in a few years and definately won't have the money for a newer car then!)

The body is in BEAUTIFUL shape, except the it is missing the window on the passenger door. It (mysteriously) exploded a few months ago and I have been having a hard time finding one here (in Alaska) for a price I find acceptable.

Soo... I have money to put down on a car, but am trying to decide whether to attempt to sell myself or get a trade in. Wondering what the opinions are on good trade in value vs private sell for my car.

    Thanks!
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
You sure you didn't get the mailman's old Saab? The one I ran off the road. LOL, just kidding, but I do hear ya on parts in Alaska, ugh, lived here for 15 years and it ain't getting no better.

I do know a woman (mailman's ex-wife) who, if the price was right, would probably snap your car up in a heartbeat, that's all she drives is older Saabs.
  • andyandy Member Posts: 21
very low miles...only 16.5k miles. Color is black, probably the most popular color. Its in great shape. Must be a cold weather state car.
  • idntnvuidntnvu Member Posts: 254
Thanks for the definition. If I were to sell it myself, I'd definitely take care of everything you mentioned. I do all my own detail work, because I'm a stickler on things like that. If I took it somewhere, they'd never do it to suit me. I as a rule "usually" keep it pretty clean and uncluttered, aka "I don't live in my car," although I know of people who look as if they do. My last car was so clean all they had to do was load it up and take it to the auction, so they gave me a good trade on it, even though the clutch plate was going out on it again (common suzuki problem.)

The Explorer is in the garage now having ball joints put in it, should get it back tomorrow. Meanwhile I'm driving dad's '95 T-100. Which brings up another trade question. What would the value of this be:

    '95 Toyota T-100 SR5

    3.4 V6, 5 speed manual

    4x4

    extended cab

    alloy wheels

    pw, pdl, pm

    sliding rear window

front bench seat with fold down armrest

he has the original am/fm cass, but right now it has an am/fm/cd/mp3 player in it

one owner, he bought it brand new in '95

it has 42,800 original miles, YES, ORIGINAL

this thing sits in the garage and only goes out when there's snow, or when theres something to be hauled

still in excellent shape, he is even more of a stickler for detail than me, spotless inside and out, one minor dent on the tailgate, (smaller than a dime), new rubber last year when it had probably 40k miles on it...all service up to date, drives like a new one

had new exhaust put on it a few years ago because the old rusted (due to being driven short distances then sitting in the garage), a cracked windshield was replaced by insurance (cracked when was brought into warm garage from cold outdoors), and a brake light bulb, that's all that's ever been done to it. He's considering a new(er) Tundra 4 door, but I told him wait til this thing hits 50k at least, haha.

    Thanks!

    ....... Whoa -- $14,000.?!? .... everyone ok.?

Lets pretend for a minute that there was no accident ... not a good color for Florida, but lets pretend is super clean, serviced, tall in the saddle, deep in rubber, etc.com .. trade side, in and around the high $14's, low/mid $15's ............ of course I'm not standing there, but lets drop the accident back in the picture - $14 big ones..? it's been slaaaamed, *OUCH* .. I have a feeling the core supports, airbags, cradle, struts, etc, etc and probably a little cut and snip on one, or both rails ..

I don't know what to tell ya, this dude should have been totaled 2 months ago .. this isn't a repair - a repair is putting the Coliseum back together in Rome, this is a rebuild and the Florida title might reflect it when you go to renew your registration or when you go to sell it ... even if it's not disclosed and dealer misses it on the first go around, if and when the damage is found, auction or retail, it starts a domino effect and sooner or later it will come back on you .... trade side, it's a $6/$7,000ish vehicle, maybe might, "depending on the repair" ... if I were you (and I'm not) I would sell it down Retail Rd, great Ad, super service, *Full Disclosure* $9,900 *asking* and go from there .................. :(

I'm kinda like the Good Humor Man this week, ain't I .? ..l.o.l.....

Not true .. everyone wants a Saab, just nobody from this planet .............. :)

In Houston .. we have an 03 Saab ARC with 16,000 Itsy Bitsy miles, no color, so it must be invisible - maybe thats why it won't sell.?! ..l.o.l... actually the handshaker can kill a Bimmer, Benz or a Buick, drop one in a Saab and it can get ugly, real ugly ..... Saab's have always been "the niche" vehicle .. $16 sounds "about" right, if it wasn't for GM buying Saab out and pumping Zillions in design and marketing, you would probably be staring down the barrel of the $10's .....

    Terry,

I can't understand why it was repaired either. When I turned it in to the body shop I authorized them to disassemble for estimate purposes. They came back with an estimate of 13.9K. I have an adjuster that I could never find by the time I located him he had already gave the body shop the go ahead and they ordered all the parts and began the repair. Once I heard this I asked my adjuster what was the total value of my truck before the accident. I had it around 16K. He has never answered me on that. The lesson learned is I should have been more involved and told them (body shop)not to do anything until I spoke to them again. Is there anything I can do about it now? This whole ordeal has been a nightmare. You hit it right on the nose about the damage. Bad all around...the woman that caused the accident was injured and I was a little beaten up by the air bags and seat belt. So do you have any more advice or am I just stuck? I'm already out my deductible. She was way under insured.

    Thanks

Accident in December 04. Insurance paid for it. 6000 of front driver side quarter panel damage. Air bags (both front) replaced. No frame damage.

What do you think it is worth and should I trade it at a retail place or sell it on my own?
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
"[..] even if it's not disclosed and dealer misses it on the first go around, if and when the damage is found, auction or retail, it starts a domino effect and sooner or later it will come back on you"

I don't get why this would come back to haunt anyone... I mean, yes, you have to disclose, and I know that. But only because I've learned it here.

So let's say our department's secretary owns this car, and she can't tell a core support from a leftover muffin. Plus, everybody's been real nice, and the insurance PLUS the body shop have assured her that it'll be "good as new", and the body shop has told her the value won't be affected.

I know that's what she'll be told, 'cuz I've been told these things.

So after all this, she trades the car two years down the road, and will have to pay restitution after the pros who missed the damage during their inspection finally figured it out?

    I'm skeptical.

Posting from my foks' house in Germany (again), I remain,

its funny, i see people on here buying 2 year old accords w/ 40k miles for about the same as the Saab. Saab has 10 airbags, stability control, whiplash protection, fast as hell, good gas mileage, unique design, free maintenance, 4 year warranty, 300 watt 13 speaker stereo, plus a lot of other stuff.....

If these off brand cars only hold about 50% of their value after 16k miles, I guess my strategy will be to buy used from now on and get great deals. Although I can never seem to find any like this.

Terry, I might have made a mistake this week. My wife drove my 03 Highlander to work one day, rather than her 2003 Camry SE, now she wants that "higher seating" feel...sheesh! She has a real nice car now....anyway...looks like we will be out shopping soon, HMMMM...maybe I get the new car and she gets my 03 Highlander? Not a member of the CCBA club ...yet!

AZ is a state where you save tax on the value of your trade, so I expect to trade this if we decide on a change..thanks once again for your expertise!

    details:

    it's a pretty car!

    Tucson, AZ

    2003 Toyota Camry SE

    4 door

    4 cyl

    automatic

    22,000 miles

    Catalina Blue Pearl/Taupe interior

    "sport tuned suspension"

    4 wheel disc brakes

16" factory alloy wheels on Michelin "performance" Tires (they still look virtually new, rotated every 5k

    ABS

    Rear spoiler

    Moon roof

    power drivers seat

PW,PL, Cruise, leather wrapped steering wheel.. etc as standard (I'm sure you are fimiliar with this nice version of the Camry

Condition is (I can't say excellent, so is "very good" allowed?) no hits, dings, scartches, interior spotless. Oil changed every 5k, hand washed and waxed regularly, garage kept. I am a stickler for detail...the front floor mats are even shampooed at least every 2 months!

Let's be honest, though.. Your $31K Saab had about $5K of dealer cash on it.. I'm guessing you paid around $25K-$26K for it?

So, even though the MSRP was $31K, the actual depreciation from the purchase price is not nearly as great..

And, as far as resale... The big incentives they were giving to move them off the lot, should have tipped you off.. A used Saab is a dog to sell.. That isn't news... It has been that way for years.. Also, selling anything yourself in the upper teens is a tough market.. as evidenced by your lack of phone calls...

Why do you want to sell it? Only 16K, with two years of warranty left... I love Saabs, but if I can go lease a brand new one for $375/month, I'm not going to buy a used one with the same payment..

Good point, it depends on the time element .. most dealers have the consumer sign a paper that states "to the best of their knowledge, this vehicle# has not been damaged or repaired due to accident and/or negligence X________________________________"

That said, if the dealer doesn't catch it quick by auction or by the next buyer, then it's buyer beware and usually the dealer has to suck-up the difference and then go after the Sekretär .. it all depends on the that magic sentence - "being aware of" ................... ;)

.. **You hit it right on the nose about the damage** ...

I wish I could give you some good advice ... insurance companies are like Ben Laden, they pop their ugly heads up every once in awhile, hard to get to and make people think all is well until it's too late .... my guess would be they have everything covered -- not trying to sound smart, but you should have been all over them like a bad habit - Before the work started and you had the figures in hand, it's your property, it gets back to those simple words in that magic sentence - "being aware of" ................... ;) .......... what can I say, I feel bad for you.

Aaah, the ol' T100's .. this one has the meat clever, 4x4 (kinda rare), Xcab SR5 (even more rare) V6 (sounds like a pot o' gold) power pack, tunes, wheels, we have micro miles and we know the previous owner .... If ~ it's really nice, no rust, no battles in the bed, no drive by's, serviced, c-l-e-a-n and it looks/drives and feels like a 00 .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $6's low low $7's, depending on the dealer you could/might see a little more, maybe ....... me personally, not even a discussion ~ a wonderful detail by you, a superb 5/6 liner Ad in the Big paper and $9,900 *asking* and if they got instant cash $9,000, if they have to call their Mommy then $9,500 ........................ let me know.

    Dude, you're a riot.

    ".. **So nach alle dies"

Maybe technology ain't THAT great... those translators have a loong way to go. Funny, though.

If there's a disclosure agreement that the "Sekretärin" signed, yeah, then it works, agreed.

As far as gen'l remarks re: insurance co's: YES SIR. Aside from my own shenanigans, I know two people who'va had their cars repaired when they should have been totaled... one was with GMAC, and he left them after the episode. They WOULDN'T give him the money (or the time of day), and when it wasn't right after three attempts, they told him to get lost. The other wasn't much better...

"to be aware of" indeed. Can't thank you enough for talking me down from my own "near-total" in '03, big help.

    Terry,

What can I say... some lessons in life I guess I'm just destined to learn the hard way. Wished I'd of discovered this forum earlier. Do you think it's worth complaining up my insurance adjusters food chain? Here's the other thing we had just renewed our policy the week prior to the accident. It's up for renewal again in March. Does anyone have a company they want to recommend or are they all about the same? Is that allowed in this forum? Thanks for your honesty and help. Enjoy your round of golf-Stoj

    true...kdfdx...there were some incentives...had a 3k rebate...paid about 26,600 b/f tax as i recall

Reason for sale. Well i am a chronic car buyer, and and sucker for lowball prices....just bought a 2004 pontiac gto for 18.5k (w/ 5k of free gm card money)....I am sure i will get killed on its resale in a couple of years.

I should think about leasing in the future, to avoid the pain of resale....

You didn't take the $1,800 and run to the bank to cash the check? A 2WD Laredo, 125K, V6, 10 years old!!!

If it's the higher seating that impressed her, you should have her look at the new Ford 500 or Mercury Montego. I had to meet a friend last week to finish some paper work on a car, and he happened to be at a Mercury dealer. I took the opportunity to look at a loaded Montego with AWD. The car was designed to have a higher seating environment, and has a very open interior and huge trunk. I have to say that I was very impressed with the build quality of the vehicle. Nothing like any other Ford product that you may have seen in the past. In fact, all of the Mercury models in the showroom were much nicer than anything else that Ford has ever produced.

All of the reviews complain about the low 200 hp engine, but with the available CVT or 5 sp. auto transmission, it seems to do pretty well. I didn't take the time to drive it myself.

I'm curious to see how these do on resale value in a few years. I just bought a loaded 04 Sable with 20k miles for half of what it was new. If the new models depreciate at the same rate, they'll be a great bargain.

sold the '99 Quest SE tonight. had a few calls, one guy really liked it. Took $8,700 (bank check) and he took it away. Thought about trying to hold out for a bit more, but really wanted to get back to 2 cars (we have had the new van for a month).

Certainly much better than the $5,700 that the Honda dealer offered us!

In theory, I am out of the market for a while, but I'm willing to bet it's only a matter of time before I ask for a quote on an '05 Scion tC!

Of course I will continue to support friends and relatives too.

Started wandering my eye last night. Private sale, a '00 BMW 323i 4 door, 5 speed stick, sport/premium packs (pretty well loaded up).

    bad news? 82K clicks.

What's reasonable in NJ for this bad boy? Owner had it listed at $12,999, which didn't sound too shabby

Good job.! .. these Quests still sell well .. folks like em', feel secure with them and there is a bunch out there with 150/200k, so they have a good reputation, plus they're in that "mid" size range so the folks that "don't" want a van can still live with the pain ..l.o.l...

Hey an extra $3grand: new plasma TV, new set of clubs, that new Tag you been lookin' at, jet ski's maybe ......... :^)

Just don't try to trade the 500 in after only two years... If you really want the cheap way out, just switch cars with her!

****these Quests still sell well .. folks like em', feel secure with them and there is a bunch out there with 150/200k, so they have a good reputation****

I sure wish I still had mine, was a very good van aside from some sqeaks and rattles. Too bad Nissan ruined them with the redesign.

I've eyeballed older Quests and Villagers on the used side, might eventually pick one up for a grocery getter that still kind of sips the fuel. That's the ONLY Nissan I would own.
