...... Can't say, don't know .. but even Texas gets a winter, so now would be the very best time to have them with the cold weather .l.o.l... could be inventory from other dealers, maybe a fleet/lease package that bounced back, maybe the dealer feels it will work for him, who knows ...... 30yrs in the business.? can't go by that, there's a dealer in Oh thats been in business for 100 years and he's buying Vettes and Trans-AM's and it's 15 degree's up there ............. :)

    Terry,

Can you give me the retail rundown for the following. I am in the Indy area and this vehicle is on a local Chevy lot (not certified).

     2001 BMW 540i

    Sport Wagon

    V8 Auto

    RWD

    35,000

    Dark Blue exterior

    Tan leather interior

    Average brakes/tires

    Assume overall condition very good

They have it stickered for $31,750

Also(maybe Kyfdx knows), can you tell me if the warranty on '01 BMWs was the current 4year/50K and if so is the original warranty transferable?

     Thanks,

     mabubba

                 ==============================

Yep, 4/50 and you can roll it over ... no CPO.? you need to check the "in service date" at the Bimmer service department, could "maybe" have been bought in 00, you could have -0- .. so look close ....

Here's a rare bird ..... 01 540i Sport wagon, 35k, V8, auto, we got the no sale blue with the tan guts not a bad color combo .... If ~ we don't have any paintwork, serviced, no super glue interior and a cleeean history - these are funny little dudes, people in Spokane, Albany and Tuscaloosa buy these, they're kinda like Saab's, these can sell in 5 minutes or in 5 months (mostly the 5 months is the situation) .... Chevy dealer.? might have the super tall $27's low/mid $28's in it, maybe a little more - maybe a little less .... $31,700.? these carry a $35,0+ retail figure, he's probably thinkin' what I'm thinkin', put a cheap price on it and turn and burn it .... $31,7 is fair, start him up at $30,5 and see what happens .......... :)

                 Don't forget the Update.!

.. **Terry, over the last 2 years, ive seen retail prices of used nissan altimas skyrocket... have you seen the same thing in the auction end?** ...

                ============================

The last 2 years ..? where have you been living, Lesotho ..? ... Altima's have been doing big money for 4/5 years, clean (old body style) 01 GLE's with small miles will see the tall $9's low $10's at the auctions ....... oh, by the way, are you aware that we had a moon landing July 20, 1969.? .......... anyway ............ ;)

The all important DIFFERENCE = $10,000

      The sales contract said

    2002 CR-V EX AWD = 15,135

    2003 Sequoia SR5 2WD = $25,135

Original asking price for the Sequoia = $27,995

                 ==========================

Ah yes, the only difference that makes a difference - IS the difference ...

In Texas ... we have the dual breeze, new round things, tow pack, 43k, leather (3rd seat.?) the dealer probably paid the high $22's, low/mid $23's, might hit the table at the low/mid $24's after some service and the rubber ...... $10 grand difference.? I guess he will have to make it up on the sale of the CRV ... you did Super.!

Before going any further, you need to read your leasing contract thoroughly to make sure you know what you're getting into. You may be required to make the remainder of your lease payments to terminate the lease.

    smart-aleck! lol

i didnt mean the last 2 model years. i meant the last 2 calendar years.

the 2001s didnt start bringing bigger money till the new altima got popular, i think.
  • tempnirvanatempnirvana Member Posts: 8
That is correct. I do have to pay the [residual value + balance of payments + admin fee (a.k.a penalty)]. I checked the contract, as well as received a quote from the bank on "pay-off" amount.

I would like to get an idea of the price I can expect when I sell it - to know how big the hole will be in my pocket. If it's too big a hole (>1 - 1.5K) I may need to suck-it-up and enjoy driving the car!!

Thanks for looking into this, again.

I plan on holding my 04 Dakota Quad AT MINIMUM 5 years but I was just curious as to how much my extra payments have made a difference in keeping me in line with depriciation. Can you give me an idea of value??

    Im in Philly

2004 Dodge Dakota Quad CAb Sport Plus in Atlantic Blue, with the monochromatic color scheme on the bumpers but a chrome grill, with 24 thousand miles(high, I know)

    4.7 V8, 45rfe automatic with 5th gear, 4x4,

Cruise, power everything, step bars, bed cover and liner, all aftermarket. Also a few other appearance items like after market tail lights and head lights and custom billet aluminum grill, but I know that probably doesn't make much of a difference.

Non-sport package, which means it has the 245/75/16 tires instead of the meatier 265s and it doesn't have the extra stabilizer bar on the suspension. Tires have about 50% of usable life left. No hitch or towing package.

A few paint chips the size of a pin head on the bumper, 1 or 2 on the hood from road debris

1 ding in the left side rear passenger door you can only notice from certain angles

Complete service records showing all dealer service done

Did the whole ball-joint fiasco kill my resale value that badly?

I owe $14,500. Am I even close to keeping to the right side of the depriciation curve?

    Terry,

Please help- both cars are in Illinois:

We want to sell our 1995 Honda Accord 4dr EX with

58K miles, 4 cyl, 80% tires/brakes left, second owner/ service records from 1995, black color. Great clean car except:) for a $1200 hail damage work needed to be done.

What can we sell it for? Will we be better off fixing hail damage first?

We would like to buy 2002 Isuzu Trooper LS 4WD as a winter "to train/from train/wife+kids go for shopping" car:

30K miles, Silver color, seems to be clean with no "Kmart kisses". Dealer wants $14K firm.

What these cars show at auctions/private/dealer sales? Would you recommend Trooper as a family winter car- nothing fancy just safe and reliable?

    Thanks in advance,

..... Terry, I got the bug after the Detroit auto show. Me thinks I am buried in this car, so give it to me straight...

     2003 Infiniti M45 4dr sedan V8/RWD

    Black with tan inside

Every option available, except chrome wheels:

Comfort/Convenience package (sunroof, power everything, full size spare, etc)

    Premium package (heated/cooled seats, etc)

Technology package (laser cruise and Nav)

    18k miles

    Brakes and tires original

Would clean up to barely good condition, needs a re spray of the back bumper and a touch up on the right dogleg, plenty of swirls in the paint from the free wash at the dealer.

     Located in midtown Manhattan...

Trade in figure? I am halfway through a 39 month lease - tell me I am buried, and I will go back to my room. <thanks>

              ===================================

See, you get all excited about the Detroit Auto show .. me, I get all excited about the PGA Merchandise Show and hanging out with Alice Cooper and talking golf stuff ~ the best of both worlds, weird Rock n' Roll and how to find my golf balls .......... ;)

In the land of Donald Trump, we have an 03 M45 with 18,000 short miles, right color for the area, we got all the stuff, slider, Prem/tech pack, we had a bad day with a few slices and we need a shoot and run to the back bumper .... actually these are pretty nice drivers, I've driven a bunch of em, they just didn't catch on - I guess they're kinda in the same situation as the new Accords, plus the new M35/M45 is just breaking out ... trade side, in and around the mid/tall $25's, low/mid $26's .. based on your description the loooow miles save it ...... what is your pay-off.?

    Location: Dallas, Texas-New/Used Car Dealership.

    1997/Buick/Lesabre Limited-4door

Engine: 3.8 liter, 6 cylinder, auto

    Driveline: FWD

    Mileage: 34,300--Yes-34,300.

Color: exterior-Kind of Silver, I guess Pewter. interior-Light beige Leather

    Major Options: ?

    Condition: Very Nice

Details of Exterior=Some normal wear of exterior paint, Couple very minor scratches. Interior is also very nice. Very little wear.

Problems: The Check oil level Light comes on for about a minute every time the car is started. Dealer said oil was just changed and nothing wrong??? Tape deck does not work (No big deal to me).

Tires: Almost new, about 80 %.

    Brakes feel good.

    Maintenance is unknown.

Other: Clean CARFAX, shows one owner. Dealer service department shows no maintenance performed at any dealers. Car has 34K Miles and looks it!

Dealer Asking $7,995.00. What is fair to both?

     Thanks,

               ===============================

Sounds like it could be a nice one ... low low low miles, Lmt, leather, probably everything but the slider ... If ~ the history is good, no 2 month visits at the ol' body shop, service records, have them drop the oil pan could be a sensor, but have it checked reeeal close by a pro ... if all is well, then the dealer might have paid the mid/high $3's if it's super clean, after a this and a that it might hit the table at the low low low low $4's .... $7,900.? that's a little on the steep side, $5,9/$6,5 would be just about all of it, and $6,9 if you just can't live or breath without it ....... ;)

Let me know how it goes...

    Other: Dealer asking $7000.

     Thanks very much as always.

               ================================

In the land of the mighty Eagles ... we have a 99 Camry LE, auto, 4 banger, 73k, good color, pwr seat ... if it's clean, cold breeze, deep sneakers, no paint by numbers, all the Vin#'s in play, then the dealer probably paid the low $5's, maybe hits the table at the tall $5's .... $7,000.? this ain't going to pay for his kids college, try $6,5 and see what happens, but $6,9 is fair for both ....

    Terry,

Can you give me an idea of the best way to sell my Jeep privately and what you think a fair offer from a dealer might look like (in case I go that route instead)? Here are the details:

    Location: Cincinnati, Ohio

    Year: 2002

    Make: Jeep

    Model: Grand Cherokee Laredo 4X4

    Mileage: 39K

    Engine: 4.7L V8

Exterior: Red exterior with grey under-cladding

    Interior: Grey cloth interior

Options: V8, Select Trac 4WD, Sunroof, Tow package

Excellent paint and interior – no accidents, dings, bodywork, floods, etc.

             =================================

Sounds like it might be a nice one .. the miles are low for the year, the color is good anywhere, grey cloth guts, 4.7 motor, slider, tow pack -- and you say it's nice with no paint, no interior, no body super glue, no accidents, no floods and no hurricanes ~ where's the fun ..?

IF ~ it's as nice as you think it is with deep sneakers and no curb burners .. then trade side, in and around the super ultra tall $12's low/mid $13's, "might/maybe" even get a Cinci dealer to paddle towards the $14,0 figure if it's a super nice one and it needs -0- (did you notice I said "towards" the $14 figure, not "the" $14 figure like someone just emailed me) ..... down Retail Rd, your right in that "it's snowing and we have big hills area" I would drop a Big 5/6 liner Fat Daddy ad in the Cinci/Columbus papers and/or online with great pics (after that super detail by the detail gods of course) $16,900 *asking* and away it goes for $15,5/$16,5 ..... don't get greedy, it's a Jeep Laredo, not a Louis Vuitton ..

                       Keep me updated ...

    Terry,

Thanks for the response. The Town & Country was my wife's car. The car she traded for was a 2005 Toyota Prius which seem to be in much demand around here. She accepted $15,000 for the T & C.

The Avalon is gone. A friend/co-worker of Mathias and his ex-wife came from Michigan to get it for her. We had agreed on $2500, but a couple unexpected problems turned up after he got here...standing water around the spare tire, and the cruise control deciding to completely die for example. I let it go for $2000. It wasn't $2900, but at least it's done. Based on my personal experience, high mileage Hondas are much easier to sell than high mileage Toyotas...or at least high mileage Avalons. :-)

    Q

P.S. I like the '94 Legend a lot. Got it detailed yesterday, but it snowed before I could take pictures. Got a brake job done, and it needs a tie rod and alignment, and I should be set. Drove it over 150 miles today...no problems.

    Quotes from the brake place:

"Someone detailed the h*ll out of this car. It looks great."

"I could get used to driving something like this."

Y'all remember my buddy Jeff... he's the dude who had the two 1987 Audis. He should be fine with a hi-mileage Toyota... or rather, his ex should be.

Tires have about 60% of usable life left. No hitch or towing package.

A few paint chips the size of a pin head on the bumper, 1 or 2 on the hood from road debris

1 ding in the left side rear passenger door you can only notice from certain angles

Complete service records showing all dealer service done, 4x4 works fine.

Did the whole ball-joint fiasco kill my resale value that badly? My truck isn't even covered by it since it's an 04 but I'm thinking guilt by association may have caused the value to take a nose-dive.

I owe $14,500. Am I even close to keeping to the right side of the depriciation curve?

$15,000.? for a low mile 03 TC limited in the land of the angels...?!?

Hmm, well, ah .. uhm, eh, what can I say, thats quite a beating for a Prius .. if my math does me right, and my Abacus is still working correctly, then you should be breaking even around the year 2012 .. new cars are nice, but have you considered a new wife..?

    That's not nice, I wasn't even there.

But I like to think of myself as an enabler :-)

Speaking of which, my father-in-law is coming up to get the clean 96 Windstar with 96k that a friend of mine has for sale... for $2, it should be alright... You pegged it at $1,500 maybe $2 wholesale a while ago.

Now when do *I* get new wheels?

    Terry,

    Location: Nashville, Tn

    00/Toyota/4Runner SR5

    2WD

    Mileage: 95000

    Color: Silver

Major Options: Sunroof, running boards, alarm system, power locks, power windows, towing package, airbags, roof rack, rear wind defleactor, cd/cassette, rear air, alloy wheels

Condition:Tires are new, it is in good conditon. No major blemishes, from bumper on right side has a small ding, records kept on all maintence every 5000 miles...done by the book!!

I tried to trade this in to a Honda dealer while trying to buy a 2005 Odyssey. They offered me $7333. That just did not seem right with all my research.

    What do you think? Thanks
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... We got some big miles going on here, it's a 2WD in a 4WD territory, we have the SR5 V6, *auto, slider, tow and go, rack, good color, new rubber - and you say the service is right out of the book and no visits to the Paint arena ....

This isn't going to be a retail piece for most dealers, especially a Honda dealer, they kinda live in their own world .. $7,333 thats a cute number, but the Yota would probably do the low/mid $8's at the auction, so thats their plan ...... Me personally, down Retail Rd it would travel, finish any service, a glorious detail, a giant super duper Ad in the Big paper, $9,900 *asking* and wave bye bye at the first $8,5/$9,5 ... properly done, I would think $8,900 would be the target price .......... ;)

Let me know how it goes..!

Terry - This is a repost again.. Thanks.

    >>>

    Thanks for the info.

A couple more things and I will leave you alone. I did the research on Edmunds and KBB and the low was $10,300 and the high was $11,100.

That was for trade-in value. What good are those numbers if they are not even close to what a dealer will give. Why go through all the research to be disappointed.

Also, a buddy of mine said "Take it to Carmax. They will give you the best deal!" Is that true.

Thanks again and I will let you know what I end up with. It has been a big help.
  • dbauerdbauer Member Posts: 416
KBB and edmunds take only cold, hard factes into the equation. the question of color, warranty, retail-ability, lien-ability, and current market conditions are things that only a buyer can determine.

as far as carmax goes, they usually pay a little bit more for their inventory, since they are a 1-price company.

they also get higher prices for the cars they pay too much for.

    Hey Terry,

thinking... I say thinking... about "dumping" the RX we have for an MDX (wife wants 3rd row seating w/ the two kids?). Can you please give me an idea what to expect... not many options to worry about on these.

looking '01 or '02, would like lower miles, expecting 20's/30's in the mileage department. What is the typical 'ballpark' range you see the '01 and '02's running thru the lanes at?

    much appreciated.
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
In general, Carmax will give you the wholesale value of the car based upon the condition of the vehicle. IMO, you will almost always do better than that selling the car on your own. However, selling a car on your own can be a real pain - people calling all of the time, test driving with strangers, etc. You have to make the final determination of what is more important.

For the record, I have sold a car to Carmax before. One advantage is that they do give you a firm price if they are interested in the car and if you accept the offer, the deal is done - almost painless.

I have sold many cars from my fleet by posting notices on the employee bulletin boards.

The critical thing is to get a good price and to get the car DETAILED so that it looks real good. I see so many cars being sold that are absolutely filthy. Generally, I will not consider them when I am making a purchase unless I get a phenomenal deals.

...in yesterday's Boston Globe business section. A dealer advertised that it was willing to pay 100% of your car's market value on a trade. Of course one consumer goes running up and was expecting almost $22K trade on a 03 Saab 9-3 rated as excellent on KBB - that was the retail value. The dealer hit at $15K based on Galves book.

    The consumer is now suing.

For the complete story go to boston.com - click on the Boston Globe and search for Saab. There's no easy way to link.

... **Each guidebook is different, and all of them have inherent biases. market value - I don't like the tactic, but I see NO legal basis at all for a suit. The dealership didn't say "you're entitled to 100% of Kelley (or NADA) retail "excellent" value"...

It said "market value", which in this case, means market value as determined by the dealer.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,736
or market as determined by the auctions. Either way, yeah, no case there at all.
