Don't forget to let me know what happens.! ---- Got it.!

    Will do, thanks!

very vague, just as intended by their marketing guys - I don't like the trickery notion when dealing with vehicle value, like with Cherry Hill (NJ) Triplexes claim of $8,000 for your trade, no matter what, but it isn't like every other retailer doesn't use big, attractive words, then fine print to explain themselves...in order to get people in the door.

Whe someone believes, albeit foolishly, that one dealer will give leaps and bounds more money that another dealer, guess which one gets consumers calling and driving in?
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
A couple more things and I will leave you alone. I did the research on Edmunds and KBB and the low was $10,300 and the high was $11,100.

That was for trade-in value. What good are those numbers if they are not even close to what a dealer will give. Why go through all the research to be disappointed.

Also, a buddy of mine said "Take it to Carmax. They will give you the best deal!" Is that true.

Thanks again and I will let you know what I end up with. It has been a big help.

               =========================

I don't think Edmunds or KBB is writing checks anymore .. I think they ended that when they lost their first few million $$ ..l.o.l... ho-hum, as we have been discussing for the last 20,000 some posts, they can give you a ballpark, a zipcode, a direction in the Universe of vehicles, a canvas to paint a broad stroke idea of what a particular vehicle "might" "maybe" "could" be worth in the very best of all conditions .... what they can't tell you, is the geographic impact (good or bad) or how the miles, options or lack of, will effect a vehicle in Philly vs Pompano, the difference in color, condition or trannys, etc etc etc.com ............... ;)

I think it might be a good idea to try Carducks, if they offer more - go with, if not, try Retail Rd .... the miles won't help you here, but you can *ask* anything you like, it's your vehicle and your time .....

                      Stop by anytime ... :)

                               Terry.

It worked out. I know you said people buying older/high mileage cars expect to have to put some money into them. I'll probably end up dumping $1000 or so into the Legend. $400+ of that was for a brake job and oil change Saturday, but how much is too much? (seriously, I'm asking.) There were some minor things wrong, and the guy told me about most of them, but if it had been a list like what was wrong with the Avalon, I would have passed. Of course the Avalon cost a lot less, and had more miles, but still at what point is it too much money to put into the car? This was the first time I've sold a car myself that needed more than $500 worth of work, and I wasn't really comfortable with it. I do appreciate all of the help and advice though....and the Legend is much more "me" than the Avalon.

I had fun this morning...I had frost on the INSIDE of the windows this morning because the carpet still wasn't dry from the steam cleaning. That was fun. Also the driver's door was frozen shut, well, the lock was frozen, so the alarm didn't disarm, so after climbing over from the passenger side, the horn started blowing when I tried to start the car... On the bright side, the heated seats and mirrors were very nice.

Before I buy a car, I turn the vehicle over to my mechanic brother with a pen and a pad of paper. He goes through the vehicle and lists any defects that he can find and his estimate of what it would cost to fix. Then, I add $300-400 because my brother is not always right (g).

Personally, I wouldn't thing that $1k on a high mileage car to bring it up to safe operating conditions would be that unusual. However, if the seller is expecting "top dollar", I would expect to pay less.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,514
Well.. the obvious answer.. if you want a car that they stopped making in '95, is that you have to pay whatever it takes...

I don't think $1000 is much to bring a $5500 car up to peak operating condition....

It is a very nice car.. but, I'm biased..

I agree, and that was kind of my point. I don't have a problem putting $1000 into it, but I would have a problem putting double that into the Avalon.

there is a difference between spending money to maintain a good car, and dumping $ into a wallet sucking money pit.

Not much to update really, but we all know Terry loves updates. Don't want him to start thinking I don't care anymore...

Buddy is still swallowing the true numbers. I think he's a few thousand buried on the retail number. Doesn't really want to sell the car, but doesn't want to eat another $5K in depreciation in 2 months/2K miles when the odometer rolls over 50K.

He's at least quit putting the miles on, as he was driving his F-150 when I saw him yesterday.

I'll go back to sitting quietly now,

140k miles, it's a '94, and the work is being done at a Monros muffler/brake/etc. place up the street.

    Hey Drift,

Just curious, did you ever hear anything about Reinhardt Ford, in Ephrata? They were investigate several times for those kinds of scams. Hiding things in the fine print and such. They were always having those lottery scratcher style scams. Ya know, bring your post card in and scratch it off, and win $5.00, or 10K, or a 2 year lease on Eddie Bauer Expy. I never heard of anyone getting the 10K or the Expy.

About a year ago they were sold to Victory Ford. New owner built a massive state of the art maintenance garage. Staff is much nicer. A lot less arogant, no screamers on tv or radio. Have a nice theme song now.

Hi Terry, got all the necessary financing now, but can you check this deal out for me?

    Irvine, CA

    2004 Porsche Cayenne V6

    Automatic, AWD, 247 HP

    5600 miles

    Black Exterior, black leather interior

Major option is the Moonroof, pretty much power everything, but no fancy Porsche options.

    Good condition, near new tires/brakes.

Other: The selling price is listed for $40,599. I called 2 days ago and offered $37,000, he told me to call back when I've got $40,000. What do you think of the deal? I heard people were able to get new 04 Cayenne with basic options (moonroof, HID) for $44,000, so I am trying to low ball a bit. It's a nice car, but an oil change is going to cost $200, so I want to make sure I get a good deal.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... $40,0.? ... sounds like one heck of a good deal, actually an Excellent deal .. good color for the area, noooo miles and it's priced cheap - maybe too cheap, even $44 is cheap considering the dealers in your area are paying $41++ down the street from you ... sniff sniff ~ do I smell something.?

I would have this one looked at reeeal close by a pro, check the Carsmack, maybe by a different dealer, maybe by one of the paint/body god's a few blocks away, whatever, but I would definitely have it looked at ... low miles are great, but they don't guarantee anything, it could have been in a body shop for the last three months ... what makes me suspect is that they could run it thru the Riverside auction and see $41/$42,0 ... that said, if all is well in LA ~~ then grab it.!

don't forget the update thingy bob ................ :)

    ..... Morning Charlie ..

Thanks for the update ... hey, at least he knows the pro's and cons of the situation and potential options and/or problems .. it could be alot worse, he could be one of these balloon heads that post: - the dealer tied me up and made me sign the papers in a dark room, my Mom spanked me as a child, my Dad never took me fishing and I put $8,000 down on a lease, and did I get a good deal, etc etc ............. ;)

VERY funny you should mention Reinhard Ford....my first dealer fraud case involved them - 1996 Taurus that had its odometer clocked and title cleaned by selling it across state lines in NJ and NY (and PA) - Reinhard bought it first and last, so it's not like they didn't know.

I made up a cool road map of where that title traveled and what happened to the mileage at each step - cost them about $150k and a lot of bad press.

    Engine: 2.4 liter turbo

    Driveline: FWD

    Mileage: 40,000

Color: Metallic Platinum Green/Tan leather interior

Major Options: 17 inch wheels and alloys, sun roof, geartronic, CD, metallic paint, premium package.

Condition: Good. Couple of small scratches, one ding. Cleans up nice though.

Tires - have only 8k miles on them, so probably 75% life left

Brakes - Good - recently done.

      Maintenance - Up to date.

Other: Indicate prior damage/insurance claims, repaints, etc.

Can you let me know a trade in value on this? I am guessing $14k (Edmunds = $16.3k, KBB = $12.8k).

I leased in June of 2001 - 4 more payments remaining. Current payoff is $17.5k, end of lease payoff is $16.2k. Car had original MSRP of $34.4k.

No urgent need for me to end lease early, but I am eligible for Volvo X-plan, so I am starting to look into my options.

    Thanks! Damon

    Terry,

Thanks for responding so fast! I am located in Irvine, but the car is actually in Northridge. He's only got one picture of the Cayenne, but he told me no accidents, and the reason he wants to sell the car is because the wife would rather get a Land Rover.. knowing this is a good deal, I'll call him again and try to arrange a meeting. I'll definitely make sure everything is in order. I will also make sure to buy a title protection, just to make sure they didn't do anything funny with the odo.

My neice is trading in an 03 Nissan Frontier club cab SE 2WD with 21K on the clock.

No-sale green, grey cloth, V6 auto, air, power locks, CD, alloys. Located in Palm Harbor, FL (Tampa/St Pete/Clearwater) Has extended warranty after 1 more yr of factory warranty is up.

Looking at 03 Honda Civic EX coupe - auto, moon roof, CD stereo, air, alloys. White with IIRC tan cloth (but could be grey); 15K miles. Local Honda dealer asking 11,688.

I think she could get the Civic for $9500 and get maybe the same in trade for her truck. She has no qualms about selling the truck at Carmax.

Help me edumacate an 18 year old in the ways of wheelin' and dealin' here Terry!

    I know I shouldn't BUT......

What's this little bugger worth.....not sure on color or stuff like that, so we'll say its green and grey.

1996 Pontiac Sunfire 4 dr, auto, 80k miles, usual options. Girl at work wants to sell it and we could use another run around........especially a 4 door! She wants $2500 for it, its clean according to her, she's the second owner.

I actually would have been surprized if you hadn't heard of them. Man, they were one of the loudest of the Screamer dealers. The tv and radio is noticeably quieter with out them.

One of my coworker's father got keelhauled be them. And he knew going in, that they were sheisters.
  • driftracerdriftracer Member Posts: 2,448
in the case I handled bought a 19961 Taurus in 2000 with only 26k miles - all of the door handles were worn, the stereo buttons, the brake and gas pedal, etc - it actually had over 140k....
  • andyman73andyman73 Member Posts: 322
They got my friend's dad to buy an EB Exploder, and pay 2K over msrp. They got him on a really high rate. He just recently paid off the last 20K, in one swoop, and is now driving a loaded Envoy. And he is much happier, put dubs on it.

  • andyman73andyman73 Member Posts: 322
From what I understood, it was like the 1st new car purchase, for them, in 20 years. Also, they are quite meek, and not likely to speak up. But, their daughter, my coworker, is very outspoken.

So, she kinda showed them that there were better ways.

Morning Damon ..... Oooooh how nice, we got that no-sale green thing going on, but newer round things and stoppers, plus we have the wheels, slider, auto, miles are ok for the year, we have a few little baby love bug bites and a couple of the tiny K-mart kisses ... trade side, in and around the super tall $13's, low/mid $14's ..... yep, your right on the money - actually I don't even read the Kbb/Edmunds stuff until you guys print them .l.o.l..

Anyway ... if you really like the vehicle, you might be able to negotiate the pay-off with VF in May -or- just cut it from the herd and get a new one ................... ;)

                      Let me know ....

    Thanks Terry for the reply.

At $14k, I am going to ride this lease out the last 4 payments and then I am definitely going to cut this one from the herd.

I have made approximately 20 stops to the dealer over the 43 months of ownership for various and sundry issues. Most were minor (and all covered under warranty) - but a pain in the neck nonetheless.

Upon turn in, I will look into the new S40. Why I might want to torture myself again with a Volvo I am not quite sure. My other option is a GM car as I have $3500 in GM Card Earnings/Funny money to use. Problem here is I can't find a GM car that interests me...

    I will keep you posted.

" My other option is a GM car as I have $3500 in GM Card Earnings/Funny money to use. Problem here is I can't find a GM car that interests me..."

Get an '05 Vibe, Terry will advise you what sells best, and resell it pronto. Best would be spring, I suppose, depending on where you are.

From what I understand, Vibes are doing OK with gas up around $2.

If you get one cheap enough, you could drive for free until you find your new ride, then ditch it for what youv'e got in it, tax and all, or maybe a little more.

I had $2,600 in GM cash, bought mine 1.5 years ago for $14 OTD and am shooting for mid-$11's... that's not bad for 18 months of new-car transportation.

Haven't figured out how to MAKE money on them, though...

Hi - You were a great help last year when we sold my wife's '98 Volvo, and now I need some help on my truck. With 2 growing kids, the child seats have begun to encroach on the front seat space and they're growing fast.

    Anyway, I have a

'02 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab, Long Bed 4wd,automatic, XE trim with the following:

Power Windows, Locks, Mirrors, Cruise, tilt wheel, CD stereo, bed liner, trailer hitch, and color matched fiberglass topper. All maintenance is current, including new tires 3 months ago. Current mileage is 29K, and color is Gold Rush (khaki green with a touch of gold). Edmunds appraisal says $13-$14, is that in the ballpark? Also, I'm in the Chicago area.

    Thanks. Rich

Mathias - I have been following this board (and others) for awhile now, and have seen your interest and subsequent purchase of the Vibe. Of all the GM cars, I will check that one out. Problem is I like to spec them out with lots of goodies, but for the interest of resale, I think I will need to go more basic. I am going to put a post or two on the Vibe board soon, so maybe if you get a chance look over there.

As for the SAAB, I am pretty sure that the GM money is not usable there. But I will keep looking - you never know when GM might change there programs.

Not sure on the value, but bargain hard on one of these... there should only be a zillion of them coming off lease.. definitely not a rare car..

And, from my point of view.. 3 year old Accords are rarely a good buy... I've leased three of them, and never could make a case for buying them at the end of the lease (which is about the position you are in).

If they got the car from AHFC (meaing a lease return.. I'm going to bet they paid somewhere around $11K-$12K for it..

Just guessing...let's wait for the experts..

I would not expect to see a good deal from the lease company as the lease payments on some of the Accord leases are much less than what i see on some of the domestics that I lease on business leases.

Ditto on the Toyota Camry leases that I have seen advertised.

The ONLY advantage to buying the car after the lease is you know how the idiot took care of it.

my e320 wagon 4 matic has 38k, dual dvd in the headrests, navigation, every option available to buy and in great condition. we bought it used from a mercedes dealer and it is starmarked and under warranty until august 2007. color is midnight blue with tan interior. of the two, what do you think will not depreciate as fast or will hold up better? my husbands jeep is off warranty in 10k miles. a dealer offered us 26k for the mercedes (highest offer). i feel this car is worth more and do not want to give the car away. any help out there or suggestions? please email me at mcohen9618@earthlink.net. thank you.

    Terry,

Please help- both cars are in Illinois:

We want to sell our 1995 Honda Accord 4dr EX with

58K miles, 4 cyl, 80% tires/brakes left, second owner/ service records from 1995, black color. Great clean car except:) for a $1200 hail damage work needed to be done.

What can we sell it for? Will we be better off fixing hail damage first?

We would like to buy 2002 Isuzu Trooper LS 4WD:

30K miles, Silver color, seems to be clean with no "Kmart kisses". Dealer wants $14K firm.

What these cars show at auctions/private/dealer sales?

    Thanks in advance,

    dockerr

    Hi Terry,

    Location: Santa Monica, CA

    2000 Jaguar S-Type 4.0L

    4dr

    V8 RWD

    Mileage: 7,877 miles

    Carnival Red exterior/Cashmere(tan) interior

Moon roof, Nav, Premium sound, reverse park control, sport package

The car is in very good condition. There's a small spot on the right front bumper

where it met a tall curb. Never been to K-Mart and no french fries have danced across the seats.

However, a soccer mom has been a passenger on occasion.

What can I expect on a trade-in and what should I ask if I sell it?

    Thanks,

    Roger.

    Terry,

I'm about to look into another car (you gave me some good tips as to what to look for regarding $30K sedans in the ask a car dealer forum)

My wife has decided she would rather keep my Explorer and have me sell or trade her van. Can you give me an idea of what I could expect on trade, or selling it outright. Here goes:

2000 Chrysler Town and Country LX Van (Typical Soccer Momma Van) located in Northeast Tennessee, closest major areas would be Charlotte, NC and Knoxville, TN. I bought it new in Feb 2000

    3.3 V-6, Automatic, 58,000 miles

Dark Green Paint in good shape, one car wash scrape that has been touched up.

Gray Cloth Quad Seating, in very good shape, no french fry or Kool-Aid stains

Tires have 10000 miles on them, 50000 Mile Michelins, with alloy wheels

Infinity Sound, including tape and cd and 10 speakers

    Roof Rack

Oil Changed every 5000 miles with Mobil One

Tires Rotated at every oil change

All maintenance done at Chrysler Dealer (I have all records)

New brake pads at 50,000 miles

Includes an extended warranty that goes to 100,000 miles (has three years left on it)

    No insurance claims, accidents, etc.

I'm leaning towards selling it myself or doing the ebay thing with it, but I might trade if the values are relatively close.

Thanks in advance for your help. You provide a great service.
