....... You guys and your friggin' Mooses, they need to ban them things ... thank goodness your Mom is okay ..
Before you start lookin' for a new vehicle, you better *make sure this thing gets totaled first* ... your seeing more and more of this, almost common nowadays - body shop gets the vehicle in, starts a tear-down, then all of a sudden "Wango tango it's a miracle" and the Body shop can rebuild it and give it new life ... body shops make a TON of money off these scenarios, the Insurance co pays for the extra stuff because it's in pieces 2 months later and your Mom gets a super glued Subaru ...
The body shop the car is at is very quick to total cars that are under a certain value.......like this 02 Subaru. Should find out today what they think. They don't like rebuilding moose hits, most are totals. I don't want her to end up with that car back, the damage is far to extensive, so I'm pushing on them to total it.
I drove it down the driveway from where she finally ended up getting help. Brought it out to the wrecker, I have to say something was weird about that car, it did not want to move in a straight line. I think its got more damage then meets the eye. That was a BIG freakin' moose!
I just hope she goes another 36 years without an accident. She was a mess last night, really scared her.
I'm about to look into another car (you gave me some good tips as to what to look for regarding $30K sedans in the ask a car dealer forum)
My wife has decided she would rather keep my Explorer and have me sell or trade her van. Can you give me an idea of what I could expect on trade, or selling it outright. Here goes:
2000 Chrysler Town and Country LX Van (located in Northeast Tennessee, closest major areas would be Charlotte, NC and Knoxville, TN. I bought it new in Feb 2000
3.3 V-6, Automatic, 58,000 miles
Dark Green Paint in good shape, one car wash scrape that has been touched up.
Gray Cloth Quad Seating, in very good shape, no french fry or Kool-Aid stains
Tires have 10000 miles on them, 50000 Mile Michelins, with alloy wheels
Infinity Sound, including tape and cd and 10 speakers
Roof Rack
Oil Changed every 5000 miles with Mobil One
Tires Rotated at every oil change
All maintenance done at Chrysler Dealer (I have all records)
New brake pads at 50,000 miles
Includes an extended warranty that goes to 100,000 miles (has three years left on it)
No insurance claims, accidents, etc.
I'm leaning towards selling it myself or doing the ebay thing with it, but I might trade if the values are relatively close.
Thanks in advance for your help. You provide a great service.
i dont know about alaska, but we have 3 CPO 2003 focus SE sedans, all around 20k miles. our sticker is at $11995. try for all you can get, but i think $10k OTD for an '04 CPO and half the miles is a steal.
The body shop doesn't total the car, the insurance company does...the insurance company doesn't much pay attention to what the body shop says, they'll do their own estimate.
That's what I thought, but she called Geico and they said they trust this body shop and if the body shop says the car is a total loss, then they will send thier adjuster out. I guess he usually agrees with them.
04 RX8 GT with 10k .. all the goodies, slider, Bozo sound, no runs, hits or errors .... trade side, in and around the mid/tall $19's, low low low low $20's, there is just a Kazillion of those little dudes running around in that area ..... whats your pay-off.?
Well, the initial estimate (done at 40 below zero) on the Subaru is $5700. Not sure what book is, but Geico won't even consider it a total unless it climbs over 50% of book value, then they will look at it.
I'm going to the body shop Monday to go over the car with the adjuster and make sure he gets everything. He wasn't sure what was prior damage and what wasn't (there was no prior, but anyway).
If they go ahead and fix it the GM has told them that this car is a priority since I've had problems with them before. He's trying to make it up to me.......again. Even still it will still be 30-45 days or longer, they are booked solid........'tis the season.
That said Mom wants to buy a cheap little beater car to get around with until then. So for under $2k what do you suggest? Has to be reliable, an automatic, and get her back and forth to work.
Her insurance pays for a rental, but due to the mileage she drives she would have to pay about $500-$750 of the rental and its only for 30 days that her ins pays.
..... The Subu sounds like the low/mid $9's, maybe the low low low low $10's on a nice and sunny 80 degree day with the palm tree's blowing in the wind ... oh yeah, no palm tree's in Alaska .l.o.l..
$5,700..? .. yeah, and by the time their done they should be breaking $7,5++ ..
I here your blowing out your Attorney General up there ...
The body shop is putting the value at $13k, so that may be a problem. The local used car lot says its a $12k retail car and that's all da money.
I wish they would just total the dern thing, would be faster and cleaner than fixing it. Like I told her it'll be worth less than 3 day old Chinese after this is done. Good thing she keeps her vehicles for 200k+ miles.
Options: Leather; Sliding Moon/Sun Roof, Alloy Wheels, CD, Power Door Locks, Power Windows, Power Seat, Rear Spoiler--Loaded!
Interior Condition: Excellent condition-new mats, no visible stains/rips/scratches.
Exterior Condition: Good Condition-visible scratches/dings from inconsiderate drivers that parked next to me. The car is black, so you can see the scratches when it's washed and shiny. Is there an inexpensive/easy way to fix???
Tires: New ones at around 55k--less than 20k on them.
Brakes: Replaced Rear Pads a year ago. Just replaced Front Pads a few months ago.
Maintenance: Serviced regularly--I don't think I have all the service records, but I do have all the records for any major repairs.
No prior damage/insurance claims or repaints.
I appreciate your expert opinion!!

Are you a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader.? .... in the land of Emmitt Smith, we have a black Honda EX with 74k, V6, leather, slider, all of the EX stuff, we got some newer stuff for the stoppers, an almost for the round things and we have a few little meteorite hits to the sides .. no Mooses, no paintwork, no Bonnie and Clyde interior, if so .. then trade side, in and around the super tall $6's, maybe the low/mid $7's, maybe .... down Retail Rd, finish any service, you need to see Dr. Dent and have the dings removed (probably around $150ish) then a super detail, a super slick 4/5 liner Ad in the Dallas paper for 14 days or more, $9,900 *asking* and send that puppy south for the first $8,9/$9,5 ....
I'm currently in a negative equity situation on my '01 Ford Explorer Sport 2D 4x4 - I have 97500 miles on it (owe 12.4k) and is in good condition with normal wear. I plan to trade this + money down on:
Charleston, WV area
2002 Chevy Avalanche 4x4
33500k miles
5.3L engine
Dark blue
Condition:
Seems very nice inside, well kept, clean. All cloth nice, no evidence of leaks or rips near the midgate. Slight fading of cladding on panels 1,2,3. Exterior looks good, no scratches, dings, cladding around wheels, doors looks fine - only question underside of vehicle .. I see rust along frame rails, around holes, etc - possibly used in heavy road salt environment (OH). Tires look to have about 25% left, but dealer willing to go in half on new ones. Brakes feel soft and takes long stops - maybe just the girth of such a large SUV/truck?? Rides nice - no noise. Engine strong - smooth.
They are offering 8550 on my trade + 4750 down with 22.9k for the truck - around 389 for 66mo they quoted me. My wife and I have a concern about the depreciation of this truck since I drive above avg miles (15k-20k) a year and are considering saving for next 6 mo for a '03 Avalanche in fall with similar miles, features. I'm also concerned with my trade depreciation - dealers say my trade with over 100k miles will hurt tremendously. Should I go ahead and consider this vehicle while my trade-in is under 100k or try and save up more and buy the 03 in the fall? Thanks.
============================
I'm guessing, your Difference figure is around $14,500ish .??
He's right, you will loose some money on the 100k deal ... Dealer might have the tall $18's, low/mid $19's in the Avalanche ... might "maybe" have dropped $6,000 into the Exploder, sounds like he just might be trying to just turn and burn a unit and thats fine .... but between you, me and the lampost, I would be lookin' for an 04 with 20k later down the road ... you should be able to purchase an 04 for your vehicle and "around" $20ish figure and thats a better buy, wait til' Fall, even with a $1,500 hit from the mileage, and the 04's should bring you waaay under the $20,0 figure (difference) .. so if I'm making sense, instead of a 02, you will be able to do an 04 for "around" the same $$ (plus or minus) $40 bucks a month ......... whats your thinkin'..?
This is only the second or third time in 24,800 posts that Terry has told someone to time the market and how to do it. I suggest you take the advice to heart.
Thanks for hosting this forum. Looks like a great resource to help consumers be realistic about car values. I know I have searched kbb.com and edmunds TMV and I wonder which is actually closer to what I could really get. My question is would it be worth it to try to market it and sell to a private party or should I just try and get the best trade in that I can? I am going to buy a new Subaru Legacy Outback and would like to trade in the Silverado pickup. Though I wonder since the dealer only sells Subaru, Acura, and Isuzu, will they even want a base pickup truck or will it be going to auction?
Exterior condition 7/10, paint looks new but there are a few small hail dimples, and the bed has a few dings and inside scratches from loading but nothing bad. The camper shell is about 10 years old and in fair condition, fiberglass with carpeted interior.
Should I replace the tires, or have the hail damage repaired? If I am going to market it myself, what is the best way (ebay, local paper, auto trader)?
This is for my boyfriend, who is looking at getting a truck.

We have a 00 Chrysler TC LX in Tennessee .. 3.3 motor, 58k, we have the no-sale green thing going on, Quads without the "I forgot to wear my Depends" stains, rubber is probably okay, Infinity sound, rack, service is all there and you say no visits to Maaco - warranty only works on the retail side ... trade side, in and around the low/mid $5's, might "maybe" get a dealer to wander towards the $6 figure .... down Retail Rd, the Dawg's of Detail, the best of Ad's, $9,495 *asking* and snatch the first real deal $8,0/$8,9 .. the warranty is a big selling point here.!
I'm considering purchasing either a new\used Chevy Colorado or Dodge Dakota, gas mileage is one of my issues. I'm also trying to decide when the right time to buy is, should I wait until spring for more incentives etc... However, one thing I need to know is what I can expect for trade on my current truck, so here it is-
Location: Springfield, Illinois Area
2003 Dodge Ram Quad Cab SLT 4x4
40,000 miles
4.7 L V-8
Trailer-Tow Pkg
Power doors/windows,mirrors
Power driver seat
AM/Fm/CD
Limited Slip Rear End
Running Boards
Bed Liner
Tonneua Cover
Color: Black
Condition- small exterior ding on passenger door from shopping cart, paint condition good, oil change every 5K, engine/tranny in good condition, 4WD in good condition, no interior stains and non-smoker.
Any ideas on what I could expect on trade and suggestions on new purchase appreciated. I've been trying to research the gas mileage issue for Colorado's and Dakota's but still have not found info I'm comfortable with.
green exterior, gray leather interior with wood trim
alloy wheels, sun roof, driver and passenger power seats, roof crossbars, trailer hitch, in dash cd
Interior is in excellent condition
Exterior is above average. 1 ding on passenger front door just below window (bb gun vandal). Another on rear bumber. Each less than 1 inch in size.
Tires and Brakes 50% worn.
maintained by volvo
1 accident replaced left front panel, front bumper, hood, lights, radiator. 12k in damages(All parts replaced brand new purchased from Volvo hence the high cost)
Thanks, Terry! I put a boatload down on that RX8. Payoff is somewhere around $10K. So far, I got a high bid of $23K from a Chevy store on a trade for a C6 'Vette (GMS, only if I order it, though....nothing off the lot).
I guess I'm feeling pretty fortunate with that deal, given they are advertsided to death ever day in the Cincinnati paper for $3K + off for a brand new '04. I don't know why those puppies are so slow selling around here.
ky & qbrozen....yeah, I got one of the first ones off the boat and yes, I really do like it. RX8's really are great sports cars. Don't ask me to make sense out of my lifelong "want" of that 'Vette, however.
Thanks Terry. You helped me decide.....definately going to go the retail route here. If I had gone into a dealer and they offered me in the 5's I would have been ticked.....at least I know now.
I'm gonna shine it up and run some ads, hoping for $8500. That will put a nice dent in the 2004 Acura TLs I'm lusting after....looks like I can pick one of those up without navi for less than 30K. What is your opinion of the 2004 TL?
I'm going over to the body shop tomorrow to go over the car again. I don't think there's any frame damage, its mostly cosmetic except the roof.
On another note, what would a good $2k car be for her? The Subaru will be gone for a while, they are estimating 2 months (winter time sucks for body work). A rental will cost her big time, so she figured she could use a second car anyway.
...... Sounds like you got a great deal on the Vette ...... $23,0 trade-in ..? nice vehicles, but not even close, they might have "showed" you $23,0 on paper .. they gave you a $3,000 discount, and they might have even climbed to $21 to make a deal in the cold snowy days of Ohio, but the rest is overallowance .. still, it's a big discount on the Vette ..
It seems I too have made my pilgrimage to seek out Terry, the wise man of the car-mountain (or others!)...lol. I've already left a post about purchasing a new 05 liberty (painted pink with purple spots!) in the car dealer questions discussion, which I got some really great info and advice about from everyone. My dilemma now is this. What the heck do I do with my 89 Buick Park Ave? lol. I'm basically looking for some advice on whether to privately sell it or possibly trade it in. The details of my beloved beast are what make it so comical to think I could possibly trade it in, but there may be others who know more than me out there, which is what I'm hoping for. Thanks!
Location: New Bedford, MA (02740)
Year: 1989
Make: Buick
Model: Electra - Park Avenue
Body: 4dr
Engine: 3.8L V6
Driveline: FWD
Mileage: 173,000 (!!!)
Color: Brown (I believe Buick called it Rosewood)
Major options: casette player, smoker's group
Condition:
-Interior: Upholstery in fair-to-good condition, no tears, no fading; Headliner lost adhesive and falling in some spots; Power front seats in good working order;
-Exterior: No rust, body well maintained, few very small scratches (less than a millimeter thick, less than an inch long). Problem on hood with large area missing paint. Tires in fair condition, about 60-65% worn. Brand new brakes. Brand new radiator (grrrr.....), brand new alternator.
Other: 3rd owner of vehicle (handed down through family, was cared for properly); Owned vehicle for 3.5 years; Meticulous regular oil changes at 3K miles, regular tire rotation and alignment, regular check of fluids. Only insurance claim to replace a cracked windshield (baseball game accident!)
considering the age and mileage, you'll be lucky to get a $300-500 offer on trade at a dealer, simply because it would go straight to the wholesaler.
Clean it up nice, squirt the tires with shiny stuff, and put an ad in your local paper, stressing the maintenance and family-owned status, put a $1995 pricetag on it and be prepared to take $1200-1500. There's a great market in the "cash" world for a sub-$2000 car.
im sure terry will help also, but trade-in, you have a $500 car at the most. it would, however, make for a great 1st car for a teenager, or park it in front of one of those "work now, get paid now" type places.
nice detail, nice ad in the paper, asking $1995, and take the first $1000-$1250 that comes along.
Again, thanks Terry. I thought they were "reaching" on the RX8. I know it's a business, but I got the impression the used car appraiser felt somehow "in tune" with the RX8. He test drove it twice.....once times with his 19 year old son (who supposedly is "breaking into" the car biz).
My sister is buying a Mustang GT. Ford really did a number on those. Question for 'ya. Are the new ones really commanding MSRP? How about 2 months from now? What's realistic on a new Mustang GT?
ky.....I was one of the ones waiting in line yesterday to get my car washed. It needed it bad.
Back to dreary rainy (at least it's not snowing) OH weather.
mustang GTs are so far on back order, that you better grab it at any price if you find one in stock. if you order one now, you will be lucky to get a 2005 model before the 2006 changeover. i was told to advise my customers that they will likely get a 2006.
they are estimating that the mustang GT will be on backorder deep into the 2006 model year. if she HAS TO HAVE a new mustang YESTERDAY, get a v6...but even those are commanding near MSRP.
thats the big concern around here. on the flip side, more orders will be coming in for the 'vert, so it will allow the coupe to catch up a little...but we still have 2-3 months of orders to write before the 'vert is available.
if she wants a manual tranny, she wont be disappointed with a v6. but if the GT is the only car she wants, she better be patient, and not worry about price. we still dont even honor A/X/Z/D plan on GTs. sticker only.
i agree...eventually it will balance out. but for now, ford has done as perfect a job on it as ever. dealer inventories may catch up by dec/jan, but incentives and discounts will probably take a little longer.

silver camper shell and rubber bed liner
Regular maintenance, excellent mechanical condition.
Interior condition 9/10, just minor wear
Exterior condition 7/10, paint looks new but there are a few small hail dimples, and the bed has a few dings and inside scratches from loading but nothing bad. The camper shell is about 10 years old and in fair condition, fiberglass with carpeted interior.
Should I replace the tires, or have the hail damage repaired? If I am going to market it myself, what is the best way (ebay, local paper, auto trader)?
Thanks again for you time and expert opinions.
This is for my boyfriend, who is looking at getting a truck.

Terry,
I'm about to look into another car (you gave me some good tips as to what to look for regarding $30K sedans in the ask a car dealer forum)
Mike
====================
Don't forget the update ...
Terry.
Thanks!
Mike

2.4 liter 5 cylinder turbo, Automatic
AWD
100,300 miles
green exterior, gray leather interior with wood trim
alloy wheels, sun roof, driver and passenger power seats, roof crossbars, trailer hitch, in dash cd
Strictly looking to trade the car in.
thank you
I guess I'm feeling pretty fortunate with that deal, given they are advertsided to death ever day in the Cincinnati paper for $3K + off for a brand new '04. I don't know why those puppies are so slow selling around here.
ky & qbrozen....yeah, I got one of the first ones off the boat and yes, I really do like it. RX8's really are great sports cars. Don't ask me to make sense out of my lifelong "want" of that 'Vette, however.
I'm gonna shine it up and run some ads, hoping for $8500. That will put a nice dent in the 2004 Acura TLs I'm lusting after....looks like I can pick one of those up without navi for less than 30K. What is your opinion of the 2004 TL?
I'll let you know what happens.
Thanks
Mike
On another note, what would a good $2k car be for her? The Subaru will be gone for a while, they are estimating 2 months (winter time sucks for body work). A rental will cost her big time, so she figured she could use a second car anyway.

You should have seen the lines at the car wash yesterday... I'd estimate a good hour and a half wait...

Clean it up nice, squirt the tires with shiny stuff, and put an ad in your local paper, stressing the maintenance and family-owned status, put a $1995 pricetag on it and be prepared to take $1200-1500. There's a great market in the "cash" world for a sub-$2000 car.
nice detail, nice ad in the paper, asking $1995, and take the first $1000-$1250 that comes along.
Back to dreary rainy (at least it's not snowing) OH weather.
they are estimating that the mustang GT will be on backorder deep into the 2006 model year. if she HAS TO HAVE a new mustang YESTERDAY, get a v6...but even those are commanding near MSRP.
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
if she wants a manual tranny, she wont be disappointed with a v6. but if the GT is the only car she wants, she better be patient, and not worry about price. we still dont even honor A/X/Z/D plan on GTs. sticker only.
The Mustang is a mass-market car... and once the hoopla subsides, things will go back to normal.. Convertibles may take longer than that....

like i said, deep into the 2006 MY.
ford is trying to copy nissan and honda by pricing it more competitively in the first place, rather than giving away thousands at the point of sale.
imagine the improved resale value for mustangs in the upcoming couple of years!
terry...have you come across any '05 mustangs at the auctions yet?
As many as I see on the lots here, I bet you can negotiate to some degree.
the others are probably v6 deluxe manuals, and MAYBE 1 or 2 v6 premiums.
if you find a GT in stock, GRAB IT!!!
