Hi Terry, I thought this was pretty interesting..

Your reply on a used 2004 Porsche Cayenne V6 w/ 5600 miles.. seller willing to let it go at $40,000:

"...... $40,0.? ... sounds like one heck of a good deal, actually an Excellent deal .. good color for the area, noooo miles and it's priced cheap - maybe too cheap, even $44 is cheap considering the dealers in your area are paying $41++ down the street from you ... sniff sniff ~ do I smell something.?

I would have this one looked at reeeal close by a pro, check the Carsmack, maybe by a different dealer, maybe by one of the paint/body god's a few blocks away, whatever, but I would definitely have it looked at ... low miles are great, but they don't guarantee anything, it could have been in a body shop for the last three months ... what makes me suspect is that they could run it thru the Riverside auction and see $41/$42,0 ... that said, if all is well in LA ~~ then grab it.!

don't forget the update thingy bob ................ :)"

    My reply:

"I just want to keep you updated on this one, when I called the Caynne was already sold, I don't know how much it was sold for, but it was apparently a hot commodity. I've since then been looking at new Cayennes. I got a dealer with $46,195 MSRP, and I offered $43,695, and they accepted on the first shot. It's got auto with moonroof, that's pretty much it, am I getting a good deal?"

    You then replied:

".... $43 and some change ..? sounds about fair .. owning a Porsche store is kinda like owning a Searay store, lots of folks lookin' and not a whole bunch buying .. try $42,9 and see what happens ........... ;)"

Interesting. A used 2004 Porsche Cayenne V6, with 5,600 miles on it, from your original post, you think $40,000 is an excellent deal. And on a brand new 2005 Porsche Cayenne, you think I might get at $42,900? (Both cars, from what I can see, are almost identical, same color, with moonroof being the only option). These Porsches sure hold their value well, especially if you factoring in the much lower financing on a new Cayenne... Sounds like it's definitely much better getting a new Porsche huh?

Lastly, this part: "a Porsche store is kinda like owning a Searay store, lots of folks lookin' and not a whole bunch buying"... this is definitely true, I've been looking for a Cayenne for over 2 weeks and now that I have the financing and a price agreed upon, I am starting to hesitate, I could actually afford the car... that is if my boss does not re-negotiate my contract, DOWN, but then this is a car that I wouldn't want to put too many miles on and having to worry about the maintainance. So now I am looking around... again!

Thanks for all the input, it has been very helpful!

....... It's more of a market thing than anything else .. as you know, they range in price from $45ish to over $75ish+ depending on the model and options .. so what keeps these things floating around is that the base model is on the cheap side, not so much that the resale is so strong ..

It's kinda like a Benz dealer, he would rather have 10 "C" classes sitting on the ground than 5 S430's .. a "C" class he can find an owner for, trying to get someone to spend $75,0+ is a much harder task and it takes a whole lot more time ... that said, your back into the $40,0ish range and now you can look at everything, maybe a Touareg, perhaps a MDX, Volvo XC90, FX35 -- who knows ...

See, once you get past the badge there is a slew of nice ones out there, you just need find one that fits Your needs and Your comfort zone .. kinda like Searay, once you get past the badge there is a lot of quality boats out there without the price tag and better quality ................ :)

Let me know how it goes ...

Hi! I'm looking for some advice on trading my 2001 Highlander for a 2004 Sienna.

    2001 Highlander is very basic 2WD 4CYL

    Silver/Cloth interior

    38,000 miles

    Interior is super clean

Exterior has a couple of small scratches

    Tires in good shape

Atlanta metro area. I've never traded a car before and thought I'd have the HL a long time, but our family is growing faster than planned! Don't know if I should sell it myself or trade it in.

     Thanks so much!

            ==========================

Been a little cool in Hotlanta lately ....

Not much of a description here ..

This is a base Highlander, 2wd, 4 banger, good color for the area, miles are low ... so if we haven't had any time spent at the Paint Prison, we have deep round things, no Taliban interiors, serviced, just a nice truck ... then trade side, in and around the super tall $11's low/mid $12's, might get a Yota dealer to waddle towards the $13 figure -if- it's really nice, super clean and it needs -0- .. the 4 banger will hold this one back ....... down Retail Rd, super rubber, better detail, glorious Ad, $16,495 *asking* and cut and run at the first $15/$15,9 .. the "books" show big numbers for these, but that's a pipe dream ........ ;)

                  Don't forget the update.!

    Hi Terry,

New here.Lancaster PA. Have a 03 Honda Odyssey LX with 25k..no dings, bought new (excellent condition top to bottom).

Thinking of trading it on the 05 Odyssey and was wondering what the ACV would be. I can normally buy my Hondas for a nickle over invoice....just making sure the numbers are right.

    Thanks for a great site!

Nice car, right up my alley... except for the automatic... but anyway:

"$16,495 *asking* and cut and run at the first $15/$15,9"

    WHAT???

Thia car is a few years old... FOUR years to a human being, and FIVE years to a human being in the car business.

I can buy the twin, brand new, for a touch over $22 here in Lansing. That's not a guess.

So $15 is incredibly strong; I can buy an 03 Outback 5sp with the same miles for $16/BO.. meaning $15... I'm not arguing with you, I'm just saying, those are big numbers...

    Thanks for the explanation dbauer.

My head is spinning about all of these "letter" deals. It looks like my sister best qualifies for "X" plan.

She's saying that the dealerships are trying to add addendum stickers....even using one of the "letter" Ford plans.

I told her I didn't think that was allowed (at least, it's not allowed under GM plans). Can you give me some details of the program rules regarding....lets say the "X" plan. Can a dealer add in "wax & shine", for example, under these plans?

Repost for Terry if you get a chance

     Terry,

I'm considering purchasing either a new\used Chevy Colorado or Dodge Dakota, gas mileage is one of my issues. I'm also trying to decide when the right time to buy is, should I wait until spring for more incentives etc... However, one thing I need to know is what I can expect for trade on my current truck, so here it is-

      Location: Springfield, Illinois Area

2003 Dodge Ram Quad Cab SLT 4x4

    40,000 miles

    4.7 L V-8

    Trailer-Tow Pkg

    Power doors/windows,mirrors

    Power driver seat

    AM/Fm/CD

    Limited Slip Rear End

    Running Boards

    Bed Liner

    Tonneau Cover

    Color: Black

Condition- small exterior ding on passenger door from shopping cart, paint condition good, oil change every 5K, engine/tranny in good condition, 4WD in good condition, no interior stains and non-smoker.

Any ideas on what I could expect on trade and suggestions on new purchase appreciated. I've been trying to research the gas mileage issue for Colorado's and Dakota's but still have not found info I'm comfortable with.

      Thanks!

    Mike

                   ============================

              Hey Mike,

See, this is more of a gas mileage thing ... the funny part is, unless your driving 25/35k a year and you can increase your gas mileage savings by 25/35% it's going to take you about 10 years to break even .. ya know, stuff like taxes, financing any of the negative equity, little or no money down and all of that stuff goes into the mix ... not knocking em', but it's kinda like buying a Prius, good little vehicles - but tack on the prices of MSRP+, drop $1,500 of negative equity into the deal and another $1,500+ of taxes and by the time your done, your daughter will graduating college before you break even, there's a big difference between real and perceived value ..l.o.l... but, I digest .....

In the Land of the fighting Illini ..... we have an 03 Doe Je' 4x4 SLT Quad cab, we got 40k, tow pack, power pack, 4.7, tunes, bed liner, cover, we have a few little K-mart kisses here and there, boards, color is good for the area ..... So, if we haven't been to the Maaco group therapy class, the rubber is deep, no $2 Swirlomatic car washes and no Lumberjack interior .. then trade side, in and around the low/mid $16's, might maybe "could" get a dealer to stagger towards the $17 figure, maybe .. the miles will hold this one back ... what's your pay-off.?

Don't forget the --- well you know ...

                                Terry.

... **The car is a few years old... FOUR years to a human being, and FIVE years to a human being in the car business** .... ...l.o.l....

Bud, you want to see some freaky numbers ..? look up the Nada on it .. your head will be spinning faster than one of those particles things you chase around - now thats freaky ........ :)

Keep in mind, in the world of Mathias ~ Cash is King .. in the rest of the world, it's payments ..... a Yota dealer will plug in a $380/$390 a month payment on $22 big ones and someone somewhere will get a little weak knee'd ~~~ then here comes' that nice little $15,0 SUV for $260/$270 -- Sold.!

One comment about the "X" plan.

If you work for a subsidiary or division of a large corporation, I would recommend that you contact your corporate headquarters to find out if they are in the "X" plan or the equivalent with Ford and GM.

You *MIGHT* find that all employees in the corporation qualify even if the subsidiary you work for is not an automotive supplier.

Thanks so much for the reply. Forgive me, as I must be having a blonde moment and I'm curious...what's a Taliban interior??

We've decided to change our plan completely. We're keeping the Highlander and selling our 94 Camry and 94 Civic...we're in no hurry so once those 2 are sold we'll get the Sienna.

    Thanks again

    Taliban interior:

By looking at the inside of a car, it appears that various nefarious characters of extremely poor personal hygiene, possibly carrying assorted sharp and dirty pieces of equipment, have been living in and/or transacting weapon and drug sales in said interior.

heck of a great description, lemmer.

by the way, Terry, thanks for the break down on the Bimmer. Sounds like it could be a good deal if everything is A'OK on it. Kinda wish I could commit to buying something, but I think I'm destined to be an eternal window shopper. A new Accord Coupe still looks like the best deal of all to me, but its so nice not having 2 car payments right now. Ugh! Decisions decisions.

    Terry,

Thanks for your info. My pay-off is around 12,000, maybe a bit less. It is in excellent condition, I even took the rear seats out and laid carpet throughout the entire van. I had the car before I came to Taos, NM and now want a 4WD since I live right by the mountains.

I'm looking at an '05 Dodge Liberty, 4x4, V6, manual for $18,000(they don't know I have a trade-in). That's where I need to know how much my trade-in would be before going out to the dealer.

    Thanks,

    Nick

as long as there is something of value being "bought" by the customer, like mud flaps, bedliners, alarms, and yes, even paint sealant, then its ok. what they CANT do is add to the price with no return of value.

since she will have to order the car anyway, all she has to do is specify that they NOT add anything when the car arrives. tell her not to let the addendums on their inventory intimidate her.

the only hiccup i can forsee is if the dealer will honor the x-plan, or if she will have to pay MSRP...either way, she needs to get her order in YESTERDAY.

Thanks Terry and Mathias for the advice on the Ford Explorer Sport Trac. Sticks in those trucks do seem rare, but that's what my boyfriend prefers, and I know they exist because he test-drove it. Oh, and no I'm not buying him the truck, just doing research for him. I'll buy him a truck when he buys me my BMW M3. :)

I'd enjoy hearing about how you like living in NM, as I'm thinking of moving there myself. And how you decided to live there, etc. (Any brief synopsis you have time for). As this is OT, if you care to e-mail me (click on the WoodyWW to start), that would be great. And /or the need for a 4WD in Taos.

Or you could post it here; we haven't gotten any dire warnings re OT postings for a couple of weeks......

I have to trade this one in for a minivan (Honda); 3 baby on the way. What should I expect private party? Does a car this new sell private?

What should a trade value be? There is a large dealer in the area that sell Honda and Saab. would they be more likely to pay me more?

    I owe $20500 on it.

    Thank you sooo much.

  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
Just an FYI, 25,000 on anything pretty much guarantees it does not qualify as excellent condition. Maybe a Lexus with 3,000 miles will be excellent condition.

Good / above average might qualify at 25,000.

Only a vehicle with new tires, absolutely no visible wear or stains inside and no visible swirl marks or any dings or chips anywhere, and all wear items up to brand new condition (brakes, etc), will a vehicle truely qualify as excellent in any pricing guide.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
    Why trade it in?

The miles and 9-10 years old are gonna flat kill it. Not to mention the poor condition of the car.

Even though Honda's will do miles, try selling one as a dealer with 130K big ones.

Anything over $1,000 trade in the as-is condition that it is sitting in my book is generous. Even the corner lots are going to have to put an exhaust system and replace the cv joints in order to sell it, for maybe in the $3,000s.

So, how much is the estimate for the repairs?

Thank you for the quick reply.

The estimate for the repairs is around $500 total. Is there a better alternative to trading it in? This is my wife's car and I am looking at getting her a new SUV (doesn't every American family that is getting ready to have kids need an SUV?). Should I look at trying to sell the car myself and using that as part of the down-payment? We are definitely getting rid of the Honda though because my truck is only 3 years old and has 36,000 miles on it, doesn't make much sense to get rid of it with so much life still ahead of it (hopefully).

Thanks again for the quick reply, and any other advise would be surely welcomed.

Definitely spend the $500 to fix it up.. Then in the paper for $3495.. Where I live, you could get $2500-$3000 for it easy.. Used Hondas that "look" decent and run well are like gold..

$500, yes fix it up. Give it a super detail. Make sure the rest of the maintenance is up to date. While they are at it, have them fill out a full inspection on the vehicle for you to have after the repairs are completed, will help sell it with the miles and bring the value up on the car.

You will need to get a feel for what these are selling in your area, so do an online search for similar ones to get your asking price. The dealer asking prices will likely be overinflated, so go with the bottom three prices you find for the reference asking price.

Since $1000 is about all of it on trade, you put $500 into it, sell it for $2500 and you are up $1000. A good running Honda for $2500 is usually a pretty easy sell. Look for a first time driver, someone needing a winter beater, etc.

I find that advertising a car like that at your local trailer park laundrymat, high school/college bulletin board, etc, sometimes makes for a quick sale.

I find that very hard to believe.!

Anyway .... in Mary-land, we have a 02 Civic EX with 42k, we have the auto thing, slider, abs, we have a giant kiss from a gang of Moose's's's's's .. depending on the work, somewhere between the $7,0 and $10,0 range .. hard to guess on those Moose/hail attacks, just ask Aka ................ ;)

    Thanks Terry,

Actually not a gang of Moose's's's's's, just one 8 point deer of about 180 lbs. The body work was actually very good and the hail attack is limited to about two small dings, so I'll go with the upper end off your estimation, which is about what I had figured.

Final estimate is in on the 02 Legacy that went moose hunting............$7050. Sad to see that car being fixed, my mom is going to be stuck with it.

On another note........I think I've found the perfect mix of SUV and fuel economy. We are driving a 2003 Ford Escape, was a blast to take to Anchorage. Got great fuel economy (25ish on the hwy) and was amazing through the bad roads.

The Titan on the other hand is sitting in Fairbanks with the front axle out of the diff, guess it didn't want to go to Anchorage.

My mother lives in Monroe, so I am quite familiar with the area.

I agree with those who say to sell it privately. Ouchita Parish doesn't have piles of wealthy people (low unemployment, but not great jobs). I'd imagine your car would sell very quickly after a decent clean up. The market for cheap cars must be quite large.

I suspect it would sell as long as it ran, actually. When I moved away from there I couldn't take all my stuff with me so I had to leave a couch. We took it outside and dumped it by the corner. My mother lives on a quiet, little traveled street next to the Ouchita River, but within 1/2 hour someone had come out of nowhere in a truck and hauled a beat up 20-year old couch away.

    Thanks woodyww,

you're assessment of the situation sounds better than what I actually anticipate.

I have it on a financing with "payment advantage" program where I have the option to turn it in for a guaranteed residual value after 3 years. So anything significant above that guaranteed residual value after 3 years sounds very good.

I bet Terry will have a more somber view of things....

    Terry,

Thanks for the info and I can understand what you are saying about the gas mileage issue, my view on it is I'm tired of paying $35-$40 every 4-5 days to fill the truck depending on the price of gas this day or that, you know, the way the gas price jumps up and down. Also I may get close to that 25000 mile mark/year since I will have had the truck for 2 years in April. My payoff is around $19500 so I would come in on the negative side.

Question though, is it better to trade in knowing that all important difference number is what I pay taxes on or sell out right and pay taxes to the State of ILL.? I have been researching at other forums about the Colorado which is what I'll probably buy and from what I understand they shut the factory down for a week in Jan because of to much inventory, that says to me time to move product, which means incentives/rebates, is this correct. What's your opinion on the best time of year to buy?

    Thanks again for your time.

    Terry,

I have a friend that owns a Dodge Dealership in St. Louis. He has a 1999 Dodge Durango SLT Plus, Red, 5.9L 8, 4x4, Leather, Rear Air, Alloy wheels, running boards, 3rd seat, infinity system and 87000 miles on it. The body and interior are clean. Needs a new set of tires. He said he got it in on auction and replaced the tranny, engine and ball joints all under warranty. He said he would give it to me for what he has in it $7500. Getting rid of my 2003 Accord Lx and getting this. I have 3 kids and need a companion for my Honda Odyssey. What would you do and for what price on the Durango?

how many pesos could i expect on a trade and for a private party sale on a 2002 chevy avalanche. Its black with tan leather guts. 36 k miles, new michelin lt's, 2wd base model with leather (not z66 or z71) . Interior hovered in and spotless, exterior is very glossy , no scratches but not totally perfect either.the plastic panels that cover the bed are a little faded. Brakes are strong and maintenance is up to date.no paint or body damage ever. Purchased new by me.In the land of Mike Vick.

now for the friend . his son totaled his 03 Isuzu Rodeo sport 2-dr. 11k miles, auto,2wd, silver , 2 sun roofs, 3.2 v6, all power goodies. this truck was extremely well kept, covered, hovered, garaged ,no dings scratches.very good shape overall. What would be a fair price for him to accept from his insurance co in this total loss situation. thanks in advance, dweller

....... **The Titan on the other hand is sitting in Fairbanks with the front axle out of the diff, guess it didn't want to go to Anchorage** ..

It's joining the ranks of all of the others that are sitting in the: "land of the blue roofs" with ladders and shingles in the back ...

                 $7,050 ..? .. $5,500 was the first estimate, right.? .... sounds about right, add at least 25% to the original estimate and Wango Tango ~ you have soup .. funny how these guys are in the business, they do it on a daily basis and they're always 25/30% off ............. ;^}

Do the math. Your current fuel economy is what 16MPG. Lets assume you buy something that gets exactly double 32 MPG (which a Colorado and Dakota won't) but a $1,000 Geo Metro will.

At 24,000 miles per year, that is 2000 miles per month. 2000 miles a month at 16MPG equals 125 gallons, at $2.00/gallon equals a total gas cost of $250 per month. Ok now you have a car that gets 32MPG, cost $125 per month, saved $125 per month.

$125 per month saved, versus how much lost in negative equity, additional new car depreciation. If you are only out say $5000 in losses by trading in now, that will take how long just to break even? 40 months...

I say it is not worth it to trade. Find a way to car pool, or something. Limit the extra trips. There are always other options.

There are good reasons to trade, but just for gas prices????

    Terry,

After Shopping for the CLK, Porsche Cayenne, now I am serisouly looking at 2002 Jag S-type, if you can appraiser for me again.

    2002 Jag S-Type V6

    29,000 miles.

    Platinum Exterio/Black interior

    Jaguar Select Edition

    Major option- Sports Package

    Navigation

    Sunroof

    Premium stero system

It's a certifed Select Edition, so everything's in a very good shape. The list price is $29,900, without bargaining they offered $27,900, Edmund's appraiser has about the range too, but there're a lot of S-types out there with very aggressive prices, what do you think I should try to accomplish? $26,500?
