Hi Terry, I would like to know what I could expect to get in trade for the following:
    Indianapolis, Ind
    2001 I30t
Bronze ext. Light Gray interior, Leather, Moonroof, CD, Cassette, power seats (both), heated, auto, 54,000 miles, no repaint, clean interior, minor nicks and scratches exterior, New Brakes, service up to date, tires 70%
    Wanting to trade for:
    1998 BMW 323 Convt.
White/Black Top, Tan Leatherette Int, manual seats, manual top, Clean Interior, Auto, aftermarket CD, no repaint, new brakes and rotors, tires 50%, very few minor nicks on paint, rear window starting to turn foggy, service up to date, 75,600 miles.
I'm thinking/hoping for about $1K difference. What do you think? Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it.
    =========================

Sooo, you want to go topless, eh.?

In Colts country .... we have a 01 Infiniti I30t, the color is good anywhere, auto, we have the cold pack, all the good stuff, 54k, we have a baby kiss here and a kiss there, new stoppers, the rubber is sitting pretty and the service is up to date .. no drive by's, no meteorite hits, no Popeye's chicken in the back seats, just a clean one - if so ... then trade side, you should be in and around the mid/tall $13's, maybe "might" could (on a good day) see a dealer travel into the low low low low low low $14's, maybe .....

(*trade/auction bought - did he buy this critter at the Vegas auction.??)
The Bimmer is a 98 323 convert with 75k, auto, color is ok, it's got the "wanna be leather" and the "you flip it roof" and the froggy back window .... "if" it's a trade, then dealer might have paid the $11ish figure for it, so figure a this and a that and it probably hits the table at in and around the strong $12's, maybe ..... your trying to hit a $1,000 difference, I have a funny feeling he's thinkin' more .. actually you could trade dead even depending on where he got the Bimmer, but $1,000 is the right $$ ...

Let me know on this one - as Colonel Klink would say: Veeeery interesting ...

    Terry.

Terry, my son wants into the new car action, and is considering a new Mazda 3. (It's his money)

Please evaluate trade-in and retail road for his car as follows:

-Tucson AZ (Sweet 16 here we come! can Elite Eight be far behind?)
-2001 Honda Civic 4 door EX 5 speed (power pack, and moon roof standard)
    -52,000 miles
    -Dark blue with grey interior
-factory spoiler, alloys (stock size on stock size tires) tinted windows (it IS the desert)
-interior is good, no tears or obvious wear that wouldn't be expected in 52,000.. no smoking, no french fry invasions..carpet floor mats were just replaced, as the originals were getting religion...overall, it shows nicely
-exterior has a few parking lot dings (the hazards of college parking lots!) We (he) might consider dent-busters to fix the dings if worth it.
-brakes new, tires new, all maintenance done at honda dealer as per owner's manual
    -no insurance claims

    My son says "thanks Terry!"

I've got a 2001 Santa Fe with most of the extras--auto, ac, cruise, am/fm/cd, power windows/locks, etc. BUT I've got a nice divot in the drivers side passenger door about the size of a softball, along with a lovely chip in the paint about the size of a quarter and a scrape that runs from the end of the door to the gas cap area (it's a long story, don't ask). Should I bother to get this repaired prior to trading it in or just let it go as is? What might be the difference in value, repaired vs. non-repaired?

The car runs great and is otherwise well-maintained.

    Hi Terry,

My father is about to purchase a new vehicle. I will be taking over his (one owner) green 99 CRV EX (auto) with about 125k. The exterior is ok, interior is good, new tires and runs almost like new. I'll obviously want to reimburse him for the car, so I think the number between a trade-in and private party value would be fair. What would these numbers be? Please, let me know what you think.

    Thank you in advance!

Terry, well, they didn't want to come close on the trade, so.... I decided to keep it. Now, I probably paid too much based upon what you posted. It was the nicest one I've seen around here, with the lowest miles and the color I wanted. I guess I had more money than patience. Besides, I had an open garage bay and I think I read somewhere that its a sign of severe sickness if you let that happen. Anyway, I paid $15 for the BMW and drove it home. Now I have my fun car and my serious one. I'm happy, the wife is not too unhappy. Now all I need is some WARM weather and sunshine. Best lesson, don't take your daughter car shopping with you unless you plan to buy. Thanks for the advice, I'll try to do better next time.

BTW, it was a trade at the dealer. They traded for a new 330 convt. Said her sister was going to buy it, but waited too long. CARFAX verifies that is was an Indiana car since 2001. Started out in Florida.

*What should I pay for a VW 1999 New Jetta*

Answer: nothing. Don't buy it. Almost all models & years of VW's are on the CR "used cars to avoid" list, based on reliability. Also Consumer Reports has another list called "CR Bad Bets"; the Golf, Jetta, & New Beatle are all on it.

Terry! Need some quick help on this...

I was looking at this car a few weeks ago and decided to pass because of some personal reasons but the dealer called me today to say if he can't move the used I35s he has on the lot by THURSDAY...then they go to auction. I believe him because they have all been sitting there for quite some time. I am pretty sure the one I am interested in was purchased at auction.

can you check the VIN to see what was paid on it?

What is your expert opinion on the car? It is a
    2002 I35 with 40K miles
    -"pearl white"
    -sport pack (17s)
    -cold pack (bun warmers etc)
    -rear sunshade
    -slider

Pretty much every option Infiniti offered except for the Navi.

Car is here in Tulsa, OK

I thought you were selling, not buying... The 2.0L up until 2003 or so has oil consumption issues, the 1.8T has oil consumption and coilpack issues, the TDI and VR6 are the least troublesome, but command a premium price. All of the above have mass airflow sensor issues and (until 2003) window regulators that snap and drop the window down into the door, when you least expect it.

On the 1999.5 VR6 example I owned, the dome lamp shorted, blowing a fuse, which caused the car to fail to start. All the fuses in the fuse panel and above the battery were intact. I had it towed to the (stupid) dealer, who took almost three weeks to determine that there was a hidden fuse under the dashboard that had blown when the dome lamp shorted. I have no idea why VW would design their electrical system so that if a minor electrical component such as a dome lamp failed, the car would become disabled. The dealer only charged two hours of labor, plus the dome lamp, and the fuse, and provided a loaner after I had already paid for a rental car for ten days. Between the repair, the rental car, and the towing fee, I was out about $700 because of a simple fuse. And that wasn't the only thing that went wrong with it!

Oh, it was a great car to drive, when it wasn't having problems... I owned it since new and took perfect care of it, and still had major issues. Now imagine the one you're looking at, which, as evidenced by its physical condition, has not been taken care of. It needs $1000 in bodywork just from what you describe. I wouldn't pay more than $5000 for it, but I'd suggest finding a better (and newer) example if you're set on a Jetta, or picking a different car if a nicer example is out of your price range.

I know, I know, stay away from the car lots, BUT......I'm looking for better gas mileage! Zippy gets around 30 and I know a Civic or Corolla can achieve 40+.

Saw this the other day while wandering the Nissan lot (waiting for my beloved Titan to get out of service).

2002 Honda Civic LX, 2-dr, I *think* its an auto, 17k miles, red/grey........NICE, looks like an 04. Has the LX options, truthfully I didn't look that close because I knew I'd be buying it if I did, lol. Nissan dealer is asking $12,175.

My precious Zippy is a 2004 Focus ZX3 base, only option is ABS, manual trans, no a/c or pwr anything. Has 27k on it. What's she worth?

Just a thought I guess........They also have a BUNCH of Chevy Prizms for under $8k, all 2002s.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
I thought Foci got competitive mileage? But, I doubt you are going to pull 40mpg out of an AT Civic, if you can only get 30 out of a stick Focus.

This rates pretty high up there on the "lame excuse to get a new car" meter. And I know, having used most of them at one time or another.

Stick with the bad knee/can't clutch anymore excuse. It's mush more plausible.

****Stick with the bad knee/can't clutch anymore excuse. It's mush more plausible.****

That's the other reason, however, I did push 48 mpg out of an 01 Corolla stick doing 80 mph all the time. The Focus averages 28-29 mpg, my old Escort (*grumble* which my mom has) gets a SOLID 40 mpg. The Focus on a GOOD day gets 32 mpg, there's gotta be better!!!

Argh, ok, I admit it, I want a different car, lol. I have had Zippy for 8 months and 27k after all.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
"I did push 48 mpg out of an 01 Corolla stick doing 80 mph all the time."

No you didn't. I've had that engine in four (4) cars; 3 sticks 1 auto, and not one of them, in any kind of driving, ever exceeded 36 mpg. They're rated 36/7/8 on the EPA hwy cycle, which tends to be the upper limit of realistic.

If you honestly measured 48 consistently, then either the pump you used was off, your math was off, your odometer was off -- or hubby snuck in extra gas from a can to make you *think* the mileage was great and keep you from trading.

All of these are more acceptable than 48 mpg. There is only so much energy in a gallon of regular.

Had a '99 Civic (auto VP model) for a while that I used only for "back and forth to the airport" use....all highway.

Nice little cars. Not particularly comfortable or speedy, but relatively trouble free (at least for the 150K miles I owned it). Best I ever got was 38 MPG...in the spring time...no a/c running....windows up. Changed the oil every 5K miles, tuned it up and rotated tires every once in a while...that was about it except for routine replacement of filters, tires, batteries, and that infernal (and not cheap) timing belt.

Stop and go traffic, it was pretty mundane for MPG...mid 20s....on a good day.

Yes I did, ONE time on a trip to Anchorage (hehehe, didn't mention that part, but it did happen) only time I ever took it to Anchorage too, couldn't trust it to start.

My math wasn't off, it was straight hwy driving, no stop and go, and 60 mph. I had to do the math 3 times to check it. Worst I ever got out of that car was 30 and that was doing 80 through the hills. Too bad the little bugger didn't like to start. I saw it the other day, its beat half to death.

Average was probably 32-35, where Zippy's average is probably 27-28 with highs of 34 (same trip as the Corolla) and lows of 22 mpg.
  • gussguss Member Posts: 1,167
Anchorage is south of you, right. That makes it all downhill :)

How did you do going back up north ?
  • lemmerlemmer Member Posts: 2,689
If she got 48 mpg at 60 mph going downhill, and 30 mpg at 80 mph going "through the hills," I would guess somewhere around 35 mpg is a realistic mileage number for mixed highway driving. But wait, isn't that what Mathias said?

Anyway, purely from a gas mileage and transaction cost standpoint it would be a disaster to trade in a Focus on a Civic or Corolla.
  • driftracerdriftracer Member Posts: 2,448
hit on your Focus, still a very new car, to pay more for a 3-4 year old car than you did for the Focus, only to gain maybe 5 mpg, at best?

You'd break even on that deal in about 12 years.

If you want to trade, trade, but don't bring math into the picture on this one, because the numbers say it's a really bad idea.

Above is your reply to a question I asked back in late 2003. Well the vehicle has been hit again and it needs the rear quarter and rear door on the drivers side to be replaced. The insurance company has handed me a check for $3500 which they say is 50% of ACV - not enough for a total. I'm not going through another repair on this vehicle.

    To refresh your memory:

    1998 Honda Accord EX sedan
Heather Mist color - halfway between gold and silver
    Boston area
    Leather interior
sunroof, alloys, the usual EX stuff
    86K miles
Dealer serviced from day 1 so everything is up to date
    Tires about 75-80%
    Brakes about 50%

Accident in 2003 in which they replaced:

    front supports
    front bumper and cover
    AC
    radiator
    exhaust
    rear suspension
    gas tank
    came out close to $10K

    New accident:

Rear drivers door and rear quarter to be replaced
I can't open the either door on that side.

I was figuring before the recent accident I could get in the $4-$5K area on a trade. What would I realistically get from a dealer on something like this?

    Thanks for your input.

BTW - I'm shopping for a mid 70's Fleetwood Brougham or 98 Royale or a new Hummer H1. Wife wants me to be safe.

No valve jobs on that honda???

My NorthStar engined Eldorado gets 19-20 in daily use, and that's with the climate control on all the time. First 15 miles each day, nice, next 10 nightmare, last 5 fiar. Reverse at night. If I could only get my own lane on I-275 I'd be all set!
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
I can't add much that everyone else hasn't said already.
Except, a lot of people would LOVE to be getting 30 mpg these days. I'd think you'd have to get a Prius or Diesel Jetta to seriously better it.

Oh, and: "if it ain't broke, etc.etc." The Focus works, gets great mileage, & then you've also got your problems with another vehicle that's always breaking........Now maybe if the dealer would get you out of the Titan, & into the used Honda, at a great price.......

This is a re-posting from last week for Terry.

Your opinion please as to a reasonable private party asking / take price :

2001 Landcruiser; V8;loaded; Nav; 6 CD/DVD; 3rd row seats; one owner; new tires; VERY clean. 57,100 miles. River rock green mica + tan leather; burlwood dash.

    1. Edmunds "Clean"

    a. Trade-in = $25,600
    b. Private party = $30,500
    c. Dealer retail = $33,500

    2. Kelley "Good"

    a. Trade-In = $ 28,230
    b. Private Party = $30,700
    c. Dealer Retail = $37,900

    3. Auto Trader - similar mileage :

    a. PP = $29,200 - $31,700
    b. Dealer = $32,800 - $39,100

    Thanks for the help !!

On the stupid Civic, on closer look today its a stick shift *gag*.

If I can make it 8 more months shifting that Focus I'll be fine, won't have to drive it much after that. Its not just a gas mileage thing (can't seem to break that 29 mpg barrier) but it is the stick shift thing. My knee is getting worse and worse.......yes, I knew this when I bought the car.......stupid me.

I don't drive the Focus any other time except to and from work, all other times I drive the Titan.

Oh and the Escort is a stick shift too and my mom has a death grip on that car since the mileage hovers between 35 and 40 mpg. She rarely drives the Legacy anymore.

    STAY AWAY!!!

    2002 passat

in shop for 2x climatronic, 2x dimmer rheostat, 1 new radio (ordered from germany, 1 month w/o any tunes) 2x headlight switch, one complete new instrument cluster, both headlight bulbs burned out spontaneiously at the same time (and imagine that, according to the manual, dealer has to replace "dangerous" headlight bulbs), and occasionally the dash lights wouldn't work. oh, and the battery died necessitating a tow from our driveway to the dealer after sitting for 1 week.

plus, add the $50 oil changes and service writers who pretend not to remember you when you're there for the 3rd time that month...

    dumped it for a 2004 mazda3. haven't looked back.

........ "Depending on where you live" ...

No location, so today you live in Charlotte ....

We have that no-sale green thing going on - but the combo is good, miles are ok for the year, we have the 3rd row, Nav, tunes and deep sneakers .... if this dude is clean, no paint by numbers, no soccer Mom interior and the service is from yesterday .. then trade side, in and around the low/mid $26ish figure .... down Retail Rd (drives/looks and feels like 25k) $29,950 *asking* and off it goes for $28,9/$29,5 ....... Landcruisers get sssstupid money, I've seen 100k 01's do $19,000 ..

Good luck and let me know how it goes ....

    Terry,

Many messages and a lot of people owe you thanks for all your time and effort. I'd like to add me to that list. We're located right outside Kansas City, MO.

We are looking at trading in our 2002 Odyssey EX-L/RES (factory DVD) during the process of buying a new 2005 Ody. Our 2002 has no accidents, good paint, 38,XXX miles, small amout of white dog hair needing to be clean out along with toys, etc. It has always been serviced with records at the Honda dealer (a different one unfortunately - I'm in the military).

What should I be expecting the new dealer to hit me for? I'm almost got him at invoice for the new Ody at this point without talk of any tradein.

    Hi Steine13:

He sure didn’t as it would be a hell of a stop when arriving home as he drove right though the back of his garage and into the next door neighbors pool :-D

On a more serious note, my 03 Corolla LE w/ Auto has seen 751 miles at 51.8 mpg so yes, the Corolla can exceed EPA estimates by a healthy amount although it is tougher in it then what I receive in the 03 Ford Ranger w/ a stick or the 00 Insight 5-speed. The Ranger’s FE was pretty spectacular for a P/U driven from just north of Chicago to Sebring, FL. and back just last week …

    03/18/2005: 575.5 miles on 15.629 gallons = 36.82 mpg
    03/19/2005: 671.9 miles on 16.026 gallons = 41.93 mpg
    03/21/2005: 695.8 miles on 16.596 gallons = 41.93 mpg
    03/21/2005: 660.2 miles on 16.286 gallons = 40.54 mpg

I will not bother posting the Insight’s overall FE as it would embarrass some here ;-)

In regards to how much energy is in a gallon of gasoline, there sure is but it all depends on how you use it …

Sorry to all for interrupting your normally scheduled program.

    Good Luck

Terry! Need some quick help on this...
I was looking at this car a few weeks ago and decided to pass because of some personal reasons but the dealer called me today to say if he can't move the used I35s he has on the lot by THURSDAY. ..then they go to auction. I believe him because they have all been sitting there for quite some time. I am pretty sure the one I am interested in was purchased at auction.
can you check the VIN to see what was paid on it?
    JNKDA31A42T001174
What is your expert opinion on the car? It is a
    2002 I35 with 40K miles
    -"pearl white"
    -sport pack (17s)
    -cold pack (bun warmers etc)
    -rear sunshade
    -slider
Pretty much every option Infiniti offered except for the Navi.
Car is here in Tulsa, OK
    Please let me know!

"Seems" to be ok ... lease car, dropped at a Texas auction on 1/20 and some Tulsa dealer bought it and titled in Oklahoma .. probably paid the mid/tall $16's, maybe the low low low low $17's .... figure an auction fee $200, a little transport $150, a little this and a little that and it probably hits the table at the tall $17's .... sounds like $18,9 too me on the Retail Side ..

    I hope I was on time .......... ;)

    Terry:

You hit my last trade on the nose, lets see if you can work miracles on this one.

Trade-side or Retail Row, 2001 Ford Explorer Sport. Norman, OK (Soonerville), 4.0 V6-Auto, 71k, Dark Blue, Gray Cloth. Rear Air, Rear Audio, All the usuals (Tilt, CC, Cd, Keyless).

Fairly straight ride, just a small door ding or two. Paint and glass are good. Tires are at about 70%.

Make some miracles happen for me....

    Terry,

I go in tomorrow to the dealer and in a bind on what to realistic ask.

    Location: Kansas City, MO
    Year/Make/Model: Honda Odyssey 2002
    Body Style: Minivan
    Engine: V6 Auto
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage: 40000
    Color: Silver, Gray Leather
    Major Options: Factory Installed DVD
    Condition: Good / Clean
    Tires - 50%
    Brakes- 50 %
Maintenance - Honda Maintained by Dealer

Edmunds and KBB both have trade in values in low 16s while NADA has high 19s. Most equal equipped 2002s are sitting on the lots in the 22-23s realm.

    Much appreciated
