Just as an aside, the Audi dealer I visited today (looked at an A3) offered, without prompting, to do an in/out on the Scion if I had a private sale lined up. Considering that would save me ~$800/900, a nice offer.

Didn't think too many dealers did this anymore. Guess they figured on such a new car, if they checked it out (to make sure it wasn't a wreck), they wouldn't have much exposure. It's probably perfectly legal the way they do it anyway.

I think Terry said you could probably buy this for around $27.5K. I hope you have driven it by now? A 540iT is a truly "sick" automobile--that kind of performance is awesome, let alone in a "wagon". Where is this Bad Boy? I'd be interested myself, if you don't buy it. BTW, I really like some of the Blue, Green, Red bmw colors myself--a nice break from black, or white. My head would go for the brand new 3-Series, but there aren't that many low mileage 540iT's around......very distinctive vehicle.

All of this lease/buyout stuff is so complicated, it makes my head hurt. But here's my 2 cents:
    1. Do you have the means to just buy the Pathy outright, & get off the "car payment treadmill"? Pathfinders are pretty reliable. Also, "I think" it's sometimes possible to negotiate the buyout price on a leased vehicle. 2. You can Buy perfectly fine used vehicles for the $6K of your down payment...........going from lease, to lease; & always having payments, is not usually a winning proposition......

    Woody,

Check out Sycamore Chevrolet, the dealer website is at www.sycamorechevy.com. Look at cars over 10k. I haven't gone it yet, but the dealer is on my home to work route so I could stop by pretty easily. $27.5k would bring it in range of an '05 325i w/ sport and heated front seats, but no warranty and new car feel. I should try to go test drive it this week.

I won this car from a Toyota promotion and is considering to sell the car.
I still need to choose a color and then pay the tax and pick up the vehicle from the Toyota headquarter.

    1) What color should I choose to make it easier to sell?
    2) What's a fair price that I should expect to get for this car?
    3) Should I sell to a dealer, put an newspaper ad, or ebay?

    Thanks.

I have a 97 CL with 60k miles in excellent condition. I want to trade it in. The KBB gives a tradein of like $6,500, private sale of $8,500 and retail of $10,000. How much do you think I should accept from the dealer?

Hi Terry, here's the info required for your assessment:

East Rutherford, NJ 07073 (suburb of NYC)
    2001 Accord EX V6
    Coupe
    3.0L V6 SMPI SOHC 24V/ 4 speed auto
    Front Wheel Drive
    35k
    Silver
Interior is excellent (black leather) weathertech floor mats, original mats unused and in storage.
Exterior is silver paint is in very good shape, shines like day one. Car has always been garage parked. One owner bought new.
One ding behind drivers side door - sometimes you see it, sometimes you don't. No paint damage just a car door ding. Couple marks on the nose (from small stones etc). Rear lower bumper has three small marks/scrapes (center under license plate) from bumper parking. Not so obvious but can be seen on close inspection.
Original tires, rotated by dealer on honda suggested schedule.
All maintainence (oil changes/tranny flush/air filter, etc) done through Honda service - again followed schedule set by Honda.
Rear breaks done a month ago.
    Transmission replaced under warrenty.
    All records available.

Car is clean. No accidents/insurance claims/repaints.

    Thanks for your response.

    2000 VW New Beetle GLS
Green metallic (pretty light green) over black leather
    35k miles (!)
OK shape, nonsmoker, no paintwork. Tires unexceptional.
I forget if it has a roof...
2.0 4cyl (not the turbo) with 4sp auto (Deo gratias!)
Buddy of mine will sell this today private party for $9,500.
That's what his new wife owes on this six-year-old beauty.
    Maybe he should trade her...
I'm thinking it's $2 overpriced, but hey, the guy will come with real dollars.

Oooh how exciting, we got that pretty light green thing going on .. the only folks that buy that color are the people that make the Target commercials ..l.o.l....

Anyhoo ......... it's a 00 GLS VW with 35,000 tiny miles, it's light green, we got the auto thing, it's light green, maybe a slider, it's light green .... if the paint is all there, no rust, no battles at the Wal-mart, no Maaco, the service is 110% and it looks/drives and feels like an 04 .. then dealers will drop the super tall $7's, low/mid $8's in it ....... $9,500 on the Retail side ..? - yep sounds about right, $9,900 *asking* and $9,500 finds a new home --- even with that Whacked color ..............

I purchased it new in April 2000 (ordered it from the dealer in Nov 1999; took a while for him to get an allocation to order it). It's been an awesome truck; very reliable.

96K miles. Absolutely perfect condition (well okay, maybe 98-99% condition
All maint records, all oil change records, Michelin Cross Terrains with 70% of tread left, good brakes.

I owe nothing on it; and I'm paying cash for my next vehicle - so I'm probably looking at either selling it to Carmax or Retail Road. What's the verdict?

3rd seat ..?? .... It's a 00 SLE 2wd Yukon with 96k, the color is good, we have the 5.3 V8, we got the dual breeze, boards and we have the service history ..... if -- the rubber is deep, the stoppers are new, no Bonnie and Clyde interior, no Mooses in the back seats and it looks and drives like a 04 ... this is a funny one to hit, to some it's worth some $$, to others, they may not have a home for it because of the change of seasons, the miles, the area and perhaps the cost of gas ..

Depending on the dealer (and it's as clean as you think it is) trade side: in and around the mid/tall $10's, might maybe "could" get a dealer to wander into the low low low low low low low $11's if it's jam-up perfect and it glows in the dark, maybe ...... down Retail Rd, super detail, big Fat daddy Ad in the big paper and $13,900 *asking* and cut it loose for the first $12,5/$13,5 ..... the tall miles can suck the life right out of it, so park the ego .....

I'll no longer be a part of the Edmunds "family" - I wish everyone the best, as I've made several good friends here - those good friends have contact info for me. I've enjoyed what Edmunds has done for me through very trying personal times, including my son's cancer diagnosis, the loss of both my parents, and my sister's recent death. That, and putting up with 42 lawyers on a daily basis.

    Good luck, friends, and Godspeed.

I really shouldn't, but the little voice in my head has been speaking to me again (don't tell my wife!). Saying things like "get a nicer car, we deserve it".

Anyway, If I did decide to splurge, what could I expect (retail/trade) on my current ride (and one reason I am considering it is they still seem to be a hot ticket, and you never see them used):

    2005 Scion tC.
Flint mica (kinda dark charcoal), charcoal interior (only choice).
    5 speed handshaker
All the standard stuff, only extras are the deluxe mats and wheel locks.
Only 6,000 miles, looks great in/out, only a couple of small scratches on the fender that can probably be buffed out (mostly).
No hits/runs/errors. Looks new, because darn it, it practically is!

So, either slap me back to reality, or push me over the edge..

I shall now retire to the CCBA thread.

I owe 24,250 and was asking for 25,500. Dealer was quoting me 23,500. This truck is in excellent shape and had all the scheduled maintenance. Just paid $350 for the 15,000 mile service. Am I being unreasonable? Any thoughts are appreciated.

    ... glad you are back!

My boss has asked for my opinions regarding his new car deal; please advise (make sure I am giving him good advice!) He just got a small boat and his truck doesn't have the motor or the wheelbase to tow it comfortably. We are in Wilmington, NC.

    His trade:

2004 Jeep Wrangler SE (4-cyl, handshaker, no options, nothing; no air, no cruise, no backseat...)
    Light khaki with tan top
    6,000 (six thousand) miles
Like new condition inside and out; he drove this to work and back under the garage.
Had bigger tires on it since just after he bought it, so the stockers which will be put back on to trade are like new, minimal wear.
He has this paid off already.

    He wants:

2005 Wrangler Unlimited Long Wheel Base
    Didn't get the color
Used as a dealer demo; 6,000 miles
    4.0L, 6-speed manual
Standard Unlimited equipment (air, cd, cruise etc)

He's already been to the friendly neighborhood Jeep store and they offered him $12,000 in trade against $20,850 for the demo, before TTL and DOC (or dealer over charge!) I think the trade value is really fair, but I'm not sure if he can do better on the new one. I think it sounds pretty fair to everyone.

What can you make of all this?

    THANKS

    Excellent Condition
    A few Dings...nothing major!
New Tires (5,000 miles on them)
All Maintenance completed per service manual

During a recent dealer visit, they would give me close to $17,500 on a trade in.

Found a few over the weekend. Just want to check with the guru to see what's what:

    Contestant #1 is a:
    2002 Honda S2000
    VIN# JHMAP11402T001396
    Silver over red cows
    22,000 miles
    Aftermarket 18" wheels and tires
    Trunk lid spoiler
Overall is in very nice shape, tires are about 50%, and one of the roof latches is broken and needs replacing.

    Contestant #2 is:
    2001 Honda S2000
    VIN# JHMAP11401T009030
    Silverstone over black cows
Again, in very nice overall shape. Tires are brand new, but they are Goodyear Eagle LS's. Oops.

Another possibility is a new 2004, still in the wrapper, Silverstone over black, that has been sitting on a lot for a few months. They also have a new '05 that is a clone. Isell tells me that there would be no Honda help on this one.

Talked numbers on the first one. I told them I really wasn't interested in trading my '94 300ZX Convertible that you previously pegged at 5-6 trade, high 9's asking on retail road. But since I'd have to sell mine first, they were eager to help me out of it. We didn't write any numbers down, but we mumbled around a $16,000 difference. What do you think?

    Thanks for your help!
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
I'm no guru, but what are they asking for all these? And what brand of Aftermarket 18" wheels are on the first one? Also, have you checked S2000 prices on E-bay? Can give you a good idea of prices when you track a few different ones. Also, you can check "completed listings" to see actual sales prices.

Trying to find a small car for a 3rd vehicle and ran into this:

    Milwaukee metro area
    2002 Ford Focus SE 4dr
    5 spd with 2.0 16v engine
    49,000 miles
    grey outside with grey interior
power windows, locks, tilt wheel, air, CD
    tires look newer
overall condition average for the year

What should take this guy home? Dealer's asking $7,500 which I think is a bit high.

    Thanks
  • scantyscanty Member Posts: 164
#1 is $23,950 and has 18" SSR wheels (GT1?) and Kumho Ecsta tires.

    #2 is $21,800.

I'll find out more about the "new" one later tonight.

Thanks for the ebay tip. I should have thought of it, since I bought my Pathfinder on ebay. Duh.

A repost (or maybe a re-repost?). I'm looking to purchase my leased WRX from Chase. The lease covers 45K miles and ends in about a couple weeks. The bank is claiming the auction value is $14,800, and my contract price is $14,200 after taxes. I haven't told the bank that my mileage is well under 45K. What's it really worth?

    Seattle, WA

options include security system & upgraded stereo
Condition: interior is very clean. The rear bumper has a scratch, but the rest of the exterior is good.
I've followed all scheduled maintenance, and it hasn't needed any additional repairs. Tires and brakes are average for the mileage.

    What do you think?

First off, I'm not Terry, nor do I play him on TV.

Second, I own a similar truck and recently tried to trade it (don't look Terry). First dealer offered me $22k and said it was a wholesale only piece since they don't want a Nissan on the lot. Second dealer (300 miles away) ACVed it at $25k and the salemen where drooling waiting to play with the Titan when it came in on trade. Both dealerships were GMC dealers. I couldn't stomach the loss so I kept it, 'cides, I really like the truck, just wanted a 3/4 ton to pull my travel trailer with, but the Titan can keep doing it for a while longer.

My truck is a 2004 Titan CC 4x4 LE, white/grey, leather, RF stereo, utility bed pkg (standard on LE), Big Tow pkg, and 8k miles. The truck is immaculate, no hits, runs, or errors. Very nice truck, still smells new.

So, that said I think the dealer is working hard to earn your business and $23,5 is all da money and a bag of chips.

Remember, I'm not Terry, nor do I play him on TV, so we'll see what DA MAN has to say when he finishes his basket weaving class or whatever it is he does outside of Edmunds. :P

........ Hmmm, interesting .. I'm looking at the Black Book right now and I don't see any figures "even close" to yours ..

Anywaaaaay ....... In Baltimore, the home of the Ravens .. how many players are in prison this year .?

It's a 04 Nissan Titan SE 4x4 .. we got some quads and the UT pack and we have 17,000 big miles ....... if this dude is super nice, no french fry invasions, a super clean bed, the paint has 10 coats of Mag 26, only driven on Sundays, never seen salt or snow, the service done every 2,500 miles, always covered by a 200 year old Amish blanket and it's never been in a Wal Mart parking lot ... then trade side, in and around the mid/high $21ish range, maybe the low low $22ish range .. the tall miles and the super poor reliabilty on the Titans are not your friend here ...

$23,500.?!? .. Bud, thats aaaaall the money, the Big Kahuna, the whole Coma Se' Yama and the bag of chips .... "if" ~ you can get a dealer to give you $23,5 (real money) for an 04 17k 4x4 Titan SE crew cab this time of the year - then you need to be there, not reading this stupid thing .... dealers are only paying the $22ish range for the 5/7/9krs that glow in the dark .... $25,500.?? not in this lifetime, or the next ..l.o.l....

Let us know what happens ......

    THANKS

The "new" 2004 is actually a demo with ~1,700 miles. They do not have an advertised price, other than MSRP, but are accepting offers. So what's it worth in Arch city?

    2004 Honda S2000
    Silverstone over black leather
    1,700 miles
    still in the wrapper

    Thanks!

    Terry,

I won this car from a Toyota promotion and is considering to sell the car.
I'm not sure what color they will give me yet and I still need to pay tax and pick up the vehicle.

    1) What's a fair price that I should expect to get for this car?
    2) Should I sell to a dealer, put an newspaper ad, or ebay?

    Thanks.

Those are advertised used around here at multiple different dealers and they have lots of them to chose from, $8995 dealer RETAIL for the 5 speed and $10,495 for the automatics. These are probably ex-rentals however, all with around 20K.

Awwww, come on Terry, you're no fun, lol. Only reason for thinking about trading the PITA was to get something that wouldn't overheat the tranny everytime we tow that itty bitty TT that we have. I couldn't stomach the loss though, they offered $25k ACV, truck stickered at $36,560 (course I didn't pay that for it ;-) ). Gonna wait a year, pay the lease waaayyyyy ahead and then see about turning it in early. Then I'm gonna get something that won't live in the shop.

Its getting bad, lol, I walked in there yesterday and the GM ran for cover, the service advisor said "uh oh, what broke this time?", and the tech who always works on my truck said "gimme $1000 and you will never see that truck again" LOL

I am capable of keeping something ya know........have had Zippy (04 Focus ZX3) for 9 months and have packed over 31k miles on her with out a single problem. Love that little car. :P

    1997 Mercury Mountaineer
    V8, AWD
    157000 miles
    green/gray cladding
gray leather interior, power seats, sunroof
Interior in great condition other than needing a new shift lever and one seatbelt in back, a few scratches on the exterior, needs some mechanical work (front brakes, could use new shocks), tires are fairly new

This will be the first time I've traded-in a vehicle and I've gotten values from Edmunds, etc. but I wanted some advice all of the knowledgeable people here. I've had this vehicle since it had 25K miles on it and it's been well maintained, never off-roaded.

Thanks in advance for your help, I'm going to be ok on negotiating a price for a new vehicle but the trade-in part of it has me nervous.

Along with Terry, & knowing the history of your truck, I'd almost start thinking about doing this myself:

*the tech who always works on my truck said "gimme $1000 and you will never see that truck again"*

And then, *Second dealer (300 miles away) ACVed it at $25k and the salemen where drooling waiting to play with the Titan when it came in on trade.*

I know you love (?) this Titan, but if it were me, I'd be camped out at the dealer (Chevy?) who offered you $25K. It sounds like even a 2 y.o. Chevy P/U or Tahoe might be more reliable. Just my 2 cents......good luck!

Quick question, I'm thinking about trading in my car but I have a small nick in the windshield on the passenger side. Would that affect the value of my trade-in, and if so, by how much. For reference, 2003 Honda Acoord 4dr, 4cyl, 30k miles, Mpls, MN. Would it be worth fixing before trade-in?
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
To fix the windshield would probably cost somewhere in the vacinity of $200-250. You better believe that the dealer (or any intelligent buyer) will write down the price they are willing to pay by the amount that they believe that they will be paying to replace it.

To me, when I am looking at a car, a noticeable nick = cracked windshield.
