"These jerks offered me $12,000 for a vehicle that stickered at $25,400 which I bought for $22,200 in 2003."

It's 3 years old -- to car dealers -- cuz the '06's are around the corner.
If it was $22 in '03 and is worth more than 1/2 that now, then I'd say Hyunday has really improved.

My wife's 03 Sienna was also $25 sticker, $22 to buy. Also in 2003. The miles are similar; 36 vs. 32. I *think* it's a $14 wholesale, $16 street price piece. And THAT is stellar resale for a minivan, only the Odyssey does better. $16 for a Santa Fe isn't going to happen.

If you offered it to me at $12, I wouldn't buy it. Now, if you had an '03 Honda CRV for that kinda money, I'd drive a few hundred miles to pick it up...

    Hi, I have a 96 Integra
(original owner, LS, 4-door, manual, 138k miles) -
    finally decided to replace it,
dealer originally wanted to give me $1000,
finally upped it to $1500. I was thinking more like $2200.
Mechanically in great shape, cosmetically. so-so, which was the
dealer's justification for the low price. Green, with a few dings and
scratches and one melon-sized dent on the left front fender.
One very small rust spot beneath the gas cap. Lots of stains on
the upholstery. New windshield, new rear brakes (calipers/rotors),
new timing belt 90k, changed oil every 3750, fairly new tires.
Original clutch which I assume will need to be replaced sometime soon.
    ==========================

    Good description .. thanks ...

Let's start with the good points - you've enjoyed the vehicle for almost 140k ......... $2,200.? that's all the cookies in the cookie jar ... dealer doesn't have a home for it and will drop it at the nearest auction and "hope" to see $1,8/$2,000 "maybe", what's he going to do with it.?

If you want more money for this little dude, then send it down Retail Rd .. finish any service, get a great detail, super Ad and: $3,900 *asking* and send it south for the first $2,9/$3,5 .... there's always a retail market for these from the first owner and all the service records sitting on the front seat ....

    Mileage: 79,000
Color: Gold with gray cloth interior

Major Options: Moonroof, power driver seat, cold AC, Homelink, 16-inch SE alloys & spoiler, aftermarket tint, no radio (it’s “pre-wired for aftermarket audio”: Bose exploded, aftermarket components come with me but wiring stays, no Swiss Army knife on the install).

Condition: Looks well-maintained and cleans up good, exterior looks good, minor door dings and front-end rock chips, interior clean. Tires have 7K miles on 'em, brakes 10K, struts 2K. Maintenance is current, with records (30/60K maint, oil changes every 3-4K). Runs and drives great, never had any major mechanical issues. I’m the second owner, had it since April 2002 at 21000 miles.

Bad news: Rear-ended in April 2003 (doesn’t show up on CarFax). No frame/mechanical damage; got hit by a jacked-up Ford Ranger, which went right over my bumper and just took out the sheet metal, I drove away from the wreck. Damage to rear bumper, right rear quarter, trunk lid and floor, repaired by Nissan-authorized shop.

Looking for trade-in numbers, but it may be “all bets are off” due to the wreck...

    Thanks for any info.

You need to hook us up with a more complete description.
i.e. A/C works and is cold, paint color condition, etc. Just follow the information right above the area where you post at the bottom of this page.

Assuming A/C and very good condition, non-smoker, no dents-dings, shiny paint, clean interior. Trade side is going to be around the big $1,000 mark. Maybe, might see close to $2,000 if it glows in the dark.

Private party, super clean, $3,000 asking all day long. Cut her loose at $2,500.
What can you say, it is a 5 speed, 113K, Hyundai. It certainly would be much easier to sell if it were an automatic, the 5 speed is limiting your market to less than 10% of potential buyers.

    Hello,

I am planning to buy used 2003 Z4. The car has 19K miles on it plus premium package. I am not sure whether it is premium leather but it has red color leather seats. The color is SILVER.

Guy listed this one for $26999 but my offer is $25K. Its 2.5lt. Do you guys think I am making a reasonable offer or its high? If high then what should be me arguments?

Its from a small dealer..(you know guys who keep cars of all model and variety).

realize I would most likely come out waaaaay ahead if I sold this rig myself. In Wisconsin.
    2001 Elantra GLS
    113,000 miles
    5 speed
    New Tires
    ALL regular maintenance
    No mechanical trouble
This car has performed exceptionally well with no trouble. Just time to get into something a little bigger.
Will dealers be willing to offer anything or should I just run an ad and park it on the corner with a big sign.
    Thanks

Not too many 100k Hyundai's out there .... this one is a handshaker, lots of miles, we have new rubber, service is up to date .. if we haven't had any Maaco makeovers and we have some cold breeze, then it's worth in and around the $1,0/$1,5ish figure on the trade side, "maybe" ... Retail Rd.? $2,900 *asking* and grab $2,500 and wave bye bye .....

    Location: Boston

    Mileage: 71,000
    Color: Black
This is the ES line with leather, premium sound, six-disk changer, premium security, roof rack etc.
A few minor dents and scratches on the body of the car. Tires have some life left, but less than 50%. Brakes are fine.
Need to have the catalytic converter replaced, but otherwise in good mechanical condition. Should I do the repair or not bother?
    Thanks.
    Take care.

In the Boston bean area ...... we have an 00 MPV ES, we have 71k, we got some hyde's, color is kinda cold on a van, tunes, rack, you say the the round things are weak and the catalytic converter has lost it's legs (been using leaded gas.?) ......... depending on where you go and who you know, it's gonna cost you $300/$500+ for the CC, dealers can have it done for $200/$250, don't bother ... based on what your telling me, it's sounds like the mid/high $5's, maybe the loooooooow $6's if you've been going to church every Sunday ....

Terry, I took the path of least resistance, and traded my 99 Legacy GT LTD yesterday. Had I more time, I would have gone down the Retail Road route, but you know how it is......

Dealer started at $3k and ended at $4 on the trade. I also got a new Legacy GT at 1k under invoice. Then the rebate and low finance rate.

BTW, I will still maintain that the car is in very good condition. Two door dings, and a couple chips on the hood. Never hit. I hand wash it year round. Hand wax, including door jambs and rims. Shampoo the rugs and condition the leather every spring. Every recommended service since day one. As a matter of fact, the oil was changed just last week. I wish the next owner as much luck and enjoyment as I got from a very reliable car.

Thanks for your advice. :shades: Rob M.

    Terry,

You nailed this one on the head. I was hit with $5400 trade on the GP at first. It took me leaving and waiting for the return call the next day. They bumped the trade to $7,000 (over allowance I'm sure) and knocked a few bucks off the purchase price.

I did the deal at a difference of $7,350 plus TTL..

    Thanks for all the help.

"Looking to trade in our car for a minivan and wondering what a fair difference would be on the following. Both vehicles located in the Milwaukee metro area.
    Trying to get rid of:
    2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT
    61k miles
silver, all power, no dents or dings
    auto climate control
    cloth interior
    sunroof
    new tires
    all maintanence by the book
    Trying to buy:
2003 Chrysler T&C LX (long wheel base)
    3.8L / FWD
    45k miles
    silver
power drivers seat, power doors, locks
    cloth interior
    newer tires
    overall good condition
Dealer is asking $14,600 for the van. Whats a fair difference with my trade in?
    Thanks in advance
    ===============================

Don't you live down the street from Laverne and Shirley..?

In Beer town we have a 00 Pontiac GP GT (4 door..??) ... miles are low for the year, the color is good anywhere, cloth interior, slider, deep sneaks and you say the service is up to date ..... no paint, no soccer Mom interior, no wars at Wendy's..? .. if so .. then trade side, in and around the super tall $5's low/mid $6's ....

The TC has lower miles, it's an LX, good color and newer tires .... (dual breeze.?) if it's a nice one, and the dealer didn't have to drop a bunch a money into it, then it probably hits the table at around the $12ish figure ..... fair difference figure for both.? in and around the $7,5ish zipcode .... For some reason CR recommends the Santa Fe, & gives it good reliability ratings(?). But whatever, the poor rep. & low resale would turn me off. I'm interested in this phenomonon of Hyundai & Kia owners who are so adamant of how wonderful their cars are......maybe there's some marketing genius at Hyundai who figured out that poor reliability, awful resale values, & a generally poor reputation would really appeal to a certain segment??? It's like Korean pianos maybe--they are terrible, but cost less than a nice Yamaha or other serious brand, so some people think they're getting a great deal.......
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
Hyundai tied with Honda in the 2004 JD Power IQS ratings (if you believe in the JD ratings concept), and I think they "slipped" to 11th in the latest 2005 ones. This is still ahead of Honda, Acura, Nissan, Mini, and most of the domestics.

So the new Hyundais are (based on these surveys) right up at the top for quality, carry a long warranty (50/60k and 10/100k powertrain), and decent prices.

The problem is they usually have to have big rebates and incentives to move product, which hurts resale. Also, the 10/100k is only for the original owner. Third there is the bad quality "stigma" of old.

The real insult is when the Hyundai dealer will not give a decent trade toward a new one :D

I know several folks with late model Hyundais with high miles and they all report few problems, good dealer service when they do have a problem, and are generally pleased. You do have to plan on driving the value out of the car and don't think about a lease, since resale is still the biggest problem facing Hyundai owners.

12K Is a pretty good number on your car. Maybe not all the money, but close to it. I just traded my mother out of her 2003 on Saturday into a new 2005. Her's was a GLS model 4x4 with sunroof. It had 45000 miles and we gave her 11,500 for it. She originally paid 22,300 for it. So it basically lost a little less than half of its value in three years. That isn't bad at all. Now retail side, you could probably squeeze 14-15k out of it if its clean and serviced.
  • skuuterskuuter Member Posts: 144
    Sorry, Terry, it's 4WD.
  • skuuterskuuter Member Posts: 144
Thanks Dennis, for setting the record straight.

I doubt Woody has even sat in a Hyundai lately. I used to consider them junk cars, until, to save some money, I talked my wife into a 2000 Elantra. She liked it a lot more than I thought she would and it gave us no problems at all in 55K miles. Then I bought a 2003 Tiburon. Great car, for the money, and other than some paint issues, it was flawless, and I drove it very hard for almost 60K. Now she has the Santa Fe, and is sold on Hyundai. I personally went for something better last time, namely a 2004 Cadillac CTS, but Hyundai is repeating the Honda/Toyota game plans from the 80's and 90's, in record time no less, and will be a force to reckon with in short order.

Maybe I am being unreasonable asking for $16K on my trade, but $14K would at least seem fair.
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
The trick is to buy really low - when they have the loyalty and other big rebates. Then you are getting the new Hyundai for way under invoice and WAY, WAY under MSRP. Then the poor resale value does not bite you as bad.

Without a loyalty rebate I can get a new Sante Fe GLS V-6 FWD for under $20k. An LX AWD would be $23.5k or so. That would be for a 3.5l with traction, ABS, etc - and a new warranty. Take away another $1k for a Hyundai or competitive owner. So $22.5k VS $12k would be 53% residual. While not great, that is decent. $14k would be 62%.

Of course, a dealer SELDOM will give you the best price right off - so you have to work them down on the new car and up on the trade. The next gen Sante Fe will be here soon - should be larger and will include DSC, and side/head airbags like the Tucson. So the resale will drop even further then.

My local dealer still had 04 left over Sante Fe models a month or two back and lots of 05s sitting on the lot. I would doubt they would give you much more than $12k trade. Why give much for one when they can't sell the new ones?

    Dennis
  • skuuterskuuter Member Posts: 144
You make a great point Dennis. However, I rarely see any used Santa Fes for sale here in the Portland Metro area, but see plenty on the road. I assumed that meant they were a wanted item.

Unfortunately, you're probably right about the offer. I think I'll stick to selling it privately when the time comes.

I thought about calling them in 2001 when I saw a 97 Elantra Wagon that was used as a lab delivery vehicle with 290K on it and was still running pretty good. I do not know the service history on that one though. Could have been on its third tranny and engine for all I know.

Same lab now has a 2001 Civic, pushing 300K as well. I do know the history on this one, top engine rebuild once (headgasket failure) , three auto tranny rebuilds (lots of hard driving).

I cannot imagine the Hyundai did not need some major work during its service life.

I know how you love dems updates so here we go.

Long story short, you hit my CTS at 26,5/26,9 and depunding on the dealer maybe low to mid 27s. The dealer was putting 25k on it.

A little bit of shopping around is netting me 26,500 on this. That is what I was after from the start so I'm happy with that number. I could have gotten more at a competing dealer, but the guy who signs my paycheck is entitled to a few hundred in profit. Now the few thousand that they were originally looking for wasn't going to work for me.

....... 03 LX, with 4wd .. and if my memory serves me right, about 34k ....

    $12,000 ..? ... American money.? ...

Bud, I hope your not still here reading this cuz', $12 big ones is aaaaaaaaall the money, the big Kahuna .... Hyundai dealers are getting anywhere from $900/$1,200 on dealer incentives and volume bonus til' the end of the month .. so I have a feelin' that $11ish was more like the numbers with 34k, and the rest they can show on as "paper money" ...

That said, if you can get $12,0 in "real money" or they can cut ya check for it .. then, if I were you ~ I would be handing them the pen and cashing the check ...

    ... it's Hyundai, not a Tag Heuer ....

    Hey Terry,

I'm curious what some really bad hail damage (really dented up hood and trunk, and some pretty decent dings on the roof and the side panels as well) has done to my poor car.

    2004 Toyota Avalon XL
    6500 miles
    black exterior/taupe interior
the usual XL goodies plus dual power seats and alloy wheels
    interior is clean
aside from the nasty hail damage, has a chip on the roof I used touch-up paint on, and a couple of light scratches
brakes are good and all maintenance performed at the dealership

Would you be able to tell me three things? I know, how demanding. :)

    I'm curious
-what it was worth before the damage
-what it is worth with the damage
-what it would be worth if it is fixed right

    Thanks!

You make it sound nice, and you don't have to convince me on the Subu's ... 8/9 years ago we would laugh at them in Florida and never took them in trade unless we could take them in for $2,0/$3,000 back of rough book .... but after awhile, we would start seeing these folks drive down from the NE after 8 tons of snow and bunches of salt with 12k, then 50k, then 90k, then "hey", whats with 137k.? .. after awhile it was business as usual, herds of them with 180k .... that's why I was a little surprised you didn't sell it on your own and pick-up an extra $2 grandish .. folks don't have much fear of a high mile Subu, great little vehicles and they sell fast ......... ;)

Found a '98 Tacoma "Taliban Special" Short Bed w/42K miles on it, AC, 5 spd, good tires, chrome rear bumper. Has some scratches on it, but overall looks "clean" per edmunds TMV category. NADA/KBB/EDMUNDS TMV give me a price range of $7.6 - $8.2 for dealer retail here in C Springs. I'll have my good friend who is a Toyota Technician check it out. Any suggestions or thoughts on buying this car for my 16 year old son?

These are good vehicles and tend to last forever.
New, they used to be between $11 and $12; I bought a new '97 Nissan of the same flavor for $10,500.
That was a loooooong time ago, and this 98 was probably already built then.
The 42k is nice, but I would not pay over $4 - 4,5 for it if it's nice. "Clean" my foot, it's 8 years old! The only reason I reach that high is that they get stupid money used... I brought a couple of these to Terry's attention over the last coupla years, so if the "Advanced Search" featue works again (it didn't a couple days ago), you might want to search RWTIV for a few examples.

If it snows where you live (C Springs -- I assume it does), then get a protege or a prizm or a taurus or a lumina or something like that... these trucks are downright dangerous in the snow and no good for new drivers. Trust me on this, we do get snow here, and ours was a handful even with snow tires and weight in back.

    Good luck,

You owe nothing ..? .... Aaah yeah, I would hope so, it's got almost 100k ..l.o.l...

3rd seat ..?? .... It's a 00 SLE 2wd Yukon with 96k, the color is good, we have the 5.3 V8, we got the dual breeze, boards and we have the service history ..... if -- the rubber is deep, the stoppers are new, no Bonnie and Clyde interior, no Mooses in the back seats and it looks and drives like a 04 ... this is a funny one to hit, to some it's worth some $$, to others, they may not have a home for it because of the change of seasons, the miles, the area and perhaps the cost of gas ..

Depending on the dealer (and it's as clean as you think it is) trade side: in and around the mid/tall $10's, might maybe "could" get a dealer to wander into the low low low low low low low $11's if it's jam-up perfect and it glows in the dark, maybe ...... down Retail Rd, super detail, big Fat daddy Ad in the big paper and $13,900 *asking* and cut it loose for the first $12,5/$13,5 ..... the tall miles can suck the life right out of it, so park the ego .....

    Updates are mandatory .................

Terry... I was gettin' that new SUV itch, you know? Thinking of a used Toyota Land Cruncher, or maybe even an Acura MDX. Kinda scared of a BMW X5 cause of reliability concerns....anyways.............

I hadn't even advertised the Yukon. I was waxing it in my driveway - I do that about once a week - and my neighbor's buddy had a 2 door Yukon GT - really nice looking. They walked over and we got to talking. Long story short, he offered me $15,000 cash, american money, (not pesos) for my Yukon. Yeah, it really is that nice.

And...I turned him down. Permission to laugh and say "man, you're crazy" is hereby granted. I know 15K is more than it's worth - but I love the truck, and it kills me to think of trading my good, trouble-free, reliable Yukon for the "unknown" of a used MDX, TLC, or whatever.

I know, one day soon when it needs a new exhaust, wheel bearings, brakes, and all the other maintenance stuff that comes up with a 100K mile vehicle, I might change me tune :) But for the foreseeable future, I'm sticking with my good old Yukon. Just giving you the update :shades:

"Long story short, he offered me $15,000 cash,"

    Depends on who "he" is.

If it's your neighbor, you definitely did the smart thing. Suppose he buys it, $2-3k over market, and then stuff breaks. He's your neighbor, you see him more or less every day. Like when you wax your shiny car in the drifveway, about once a week...

Even if it was the neighbor's buddy, depends on how good a buddy he is. That way lies trouble.

    Terry,

Have you seen many Scion Xb's at the auctions? What kind of money are they doing? I've been pushing my manager into getting one at the sales for our lot. If it drives decent my wife would probably pick it up.

My manager was going to go for one last week, but when he called our local Yota dealer (future Scion dealer) they said they couldn't do warranty work. 2 minutes after it passed they called him back saying they could do it. :(

    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hey Terry,

Was told to come over here to get a trade in quote from the expert :)

    60115, IL (Dekalb County)
    2001 Ford Mustang Convertible
    3.8L V6 - Auto
    RWD
    36K Miles
    Silver w/Black Leather Int
    Premium Pkg Includes:
6 Disc In Dash CD (Mach Audio)
    Pwr Driver Seat
    Alloy Rims
    Traction Control
    Rear spoiler

A small crack on very front of hood (about 2 inches long) with a few minor scratches that can be buffed out pretty easily. Other than that the exterior is in great condition, the interior is in excellent condition and tires in good condition (maybe 10-15% worn). No accidents or any other damage.

What can I expect to get on a trade in for this?

    Thx, Trav

2.5L/4 cyl; 5 sp man; AWD, ABS, alloy wheels, 5 door wagon, red/silver exterior, gray cloth interior, 37,400 mi; 28-30 mpg. One ding on outside, one small chip, one owner, all maintenance records, no damage, etc.; tires sl. worn on edges; interior is excellent.

I am trying to sell this on my own, but few calls. I wonder if people are confused by seeing Impreza and Outback Sport together. Also, is $12,400 too high? I'm in lower MI.

We have a car to replace with zero value - needs new engine, so no charity wants it, no family or friends want it. Can we trade-it in for $0 just to let the dealer take care of properly disposing of it?

    Terry,
He probaly meant Colorado Springs...not lovely Coral Springs where I live. Great place to raise kids, but I just found out that we are finally at build out. Back in 1963, Johnny Carson was a pitchman to get the area going.
At one time, we all had to go into Ft. Lauderdale to buy any cars. But back in 1984 as more folks moved out west, they finally opened an Automall out here and now we have dealerships all around. I can literally buy almost any brand of car within a 8 mile radius, give or take. Makes test driving very easy
One question. How are the Mazda 3's selling? I persoanlly love the "i" sedan version and am pushing the wife in that direction. She hates the gauge cluster...to confusing she says, but I think it's cool! She wants 2 downsize from her current '01 Altima and get an economy sized car. She likes the Volvo S40 and loves the BMW 3 series, but I won't spend $25k or more on a depreciating asset. The Corolla is also in contention.
She needed a new tire badly yesterday and had a nail in another one...if there's a nail in the road, she will find it! Maybe a blessing though, as I want to wait until the '06 models come out. I must say, I saw a Volvo S40 in white yesterday and it was a head turner. Them Volvos are pretty safe to I've heard.

    The Sandman :)

(Funny thing is everytime we put any new tire on her ride, we end up trading the car within 2 months or so, so we just might end up with an '05. I really don't want to put any more $ into the Alty as we spent about $500 in 2004 to stop about 4 or 5 oil leaks. Gotta hand it to my mechanic...he found and fixed every darn one of them!)
