Help for a friend that is pulling his hair out ttrying to find a car for his daughter.

Anyway, they have in sight a:

    2003 Corolla LE
Automatic, but it does have a moonroof. Not sure of what other options, but I think the rest is pretty much standard. Don't know the color, so assume something normal

Only 6,000 short miles. At a Toyota dealer here in the Jersey burbs of Liberty bell town.

The seem to have come down to $13,895, not sure if they are stil lshooting for the moon, and if so, how badly.

The other choice (that the daughter prefers).

A 2001 Civic EX coupe, auto tranny. New tires, otherwise reported to be clean.

Dealer wants $12,800 for this baby. Seems high to me, but I'm barely in touch with reality, so that's why I am here!

I would take a Kia Sedona for the same money over this much used up Toyota. It does not have every feature available and has EPA mileage numbers on the low side, but it would be a new van with a LONG warranty and a very low price. An LX loaded up with ABS, DVD entertainment system, remote start, keyless entry, and tow package should be under $20k NEW (with the current $3k rebate). Leave off the DVD, remote start, etc but keep the ABS and you are at $18k. An EX with ABS would be about $19k - add DVD, remote start, tow and sunroof and it would be around $21,500. Add leather and you have all the options for $22,400 or so. $4k rebate on EX models. Find a left over 04 and they are doing $5k of more on those.

The downside to the Kia is poor resale value, but if you get a new van loaded for $20k with a 10yr/100k powertrain and 5yr/60k bumper to bumper warranty you can just drive the value out of it.

Wait until the much improved 2006 models come out for stability control, etc - or score a left over 2005 for REALLY cheap.

Toyotas are nice and seldom break, but when they do they have some REALLY spendy parts. We used to have a Previa and had to trade it once the miles racked up and things finally started to fail.

Watch out Dennis, you can't recommend any Hyundai or Kia here without taking some flack.
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
As a new car with the long warranty, they are fine. As a used car or an "investment" to return a good value at trade time, then they suffer. But it my choices were a T&C for > $20k, the Sedona, or a real high mile Toyo - I would take the Kia any day.

I'm not questioning your logic, just sending out a warning.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
Actually, the Sienna is likely to depreciate fairly hard. It is already 5 years old (Terry years), so if you run a few miles up on it, suddenly you have a relatively old, high mileage vehicle, which does 2 things: depress the value, and make it more likely you won't keep it a long time (not a good combination).

.. ** I don't see what the big deal is about black on black cars in FL.** ......

If you like em' and enjoy em', then no biggie .... but just like in your case, you took a $2,5/$3,0 hit at trade time .. and a lighter color will do $3,0/$4,000 more on a phone call on the retail side .... south of the Mason/Dixon line it becomes a color thing and they're hard to sell ...

At almost 19k (+ taxes and fees, I am assuming), I would take a new Mazda MPV LX over a 4-5 year old Sienna. But Mathias is certainly right, if the buyer is not afraid of buying used, why not get a 01 Villager for 10-11k, the difference in repair costs between it and a Sienna are unlikely to be be 8-9k for the life of the vehicle...

Just wanted to update you on the car. Got it back last wed and the total damage was just under $5200. The Lexus dealer looked it over before it I got it back and the brakes went out on it and they almost hit the wall...The service manager said it had nothing to do with the accident and they replaced the master cylinder under warranty. (Would appreciate your comments or thoughts on this failure)

As far as the diminsished value claim....I have talked to a few appraisers and the insurance company and have decided to turn it over to a lawyer. The insurance is playing games and transferred the diminished value claim to an office in another state. They were very vague and could not answer my questions on the phone.

As far as the body work...it came out pretty good ...the Lexus used car manager asked who did the body work. I'll let you know the outcome once the ins co pays up.

.. **Hi, can you tell me what's the real value (trade-in & private) for a 03 540 silver / black interior, automatic with the sports pkg (it's got the 18' wheels and looks like the M5), sun shades, premium stereo and has about 38,000 miles. It also has the M5 interior titanium trim and the spoiler, don't know if that adds value or not. It's also a CPO for 6yr/100k. First off, thanks to everyone for their help

My friend who was looking at the 2001 Toyota Sienna for $18,900, where the dealer was willing to go to $18,600 -- well she offered $17,500 and the dealer took it so she's happy driving the car she wanted at a price she was willing to pay.

I heard you laughing before I hit the "post" button...

but here's a question in all seriousness, and with due respect

........ did Oprah offer you a Kia or a Ferrari?

And here's an illustration of how hard it is for us non-car people who buy a car every 5 to 8 years just to get around in to know what we're doing even if we do our "homework" and our "research." Edmunds TMV valued this Sienna at ~$19,300, KBB had it at $18,240 and another site (I can't remember which) valued it at $20,685. Everyone on this board, whose judgement I trust a lot valued it at way less.

So here's what would have happened if she had done her "homework" on the 3 sites I just mentioned that put values on used cars. I know that they are just a starting point, but nevertheless she would have been happy, and I think most non-car people would have felt they had done the right thing if they had gotten a price in the middle of the high and the low figures these sites offer. The mid price between $18,240 and $20,685 is $19,463 if I did my arithmathic right. But because you guys on "Real World..." valued this Sienna closer to $15-16K (if I remember. I don't want to scroll back and risk posting twice), she offered $17,500, an amount between your numbers and the "bargained to" price of $18,600. So you are laughing, and I'm not saying you are wrong from where you sit, but from where we novices peer out over the scary car buying world, she saved $900 on the basis of your advice. and the "average novice" car buyer, in my opinion, would have saved $2,343 (if you split the difference of $4,685 between your $16,000 and the top "car site" value of $20,685).

So even though you're laughing at us, we don't take offense.....

    katherine

Hey... you saved your friend $1100 by coming here and having someone appraise the car..

That is a great thing.. She may still have paid too much, but she is still $1100 better off by you doing a little research...

At least she paid too much for a Toyota... there are a lot worse things that she could have overpaid for...

If she is happy, all is okay...

I'm paying more money now for Prizm's than I was a year ago, go figure

Seems like the price of a lot of things are going up. We had our 2003 Wrem 18' Car/Bobcat trailer appraised recently and the guy hit it at an easy $3500 even with the damaged diamond plated wheel well (long story there). He said the price of steel is going up and to replace our trailer today would cost $5195 new, he said he could sell our trailer in a day. We bought ours brand new in October 2003 for $4195. So if its only lost $695 in 2 years I ain't complaining. I only wish cars were that way!
  • dwynnedwynne Member Posts: 4,018
Like was said, your friend saved because you checked here - which is a good thing.

I think online folks tend to be a little more "cheap" than the rest of the world - we want new cars sold to at prices into the hold back and used cars near the auction prices :D

The rest of the world has a different, higher price.

The Sienna is a very nice van, but I (personally) would not want to pay so much for a high mile out of warranty example. So that would make my price for this a lot lower than what some "online book" price would show. Of course, they have a lot of errors and problems in the "book" values - where what you get here are more "Real-world" (hey, they should put that in the forum title) and that tends to be lower.

Hopefully your friend will have many, happy and trouble free miles in the new-to-them van!

Excellent post and a good example of how popular internet sites like Edmunds, NADA, and KBB can differ from the real world.

I'm looking for a used Dodge Dakota reg. cab with 4WD here in Florida. Dodge doesn't make the reg. cab anymore (as of 2005) and who needs 4WD in Florida so I should be able to pick one up for next to nothing. And maybe less if I can find a black one.

Terry priced one out for me a week or so ago for about 40% off the price of a new one, and that's for a low mileage 2 yr old truck still with lots of warranty left. Edmunds private party price was about $1300 higher than the dealer asking price on autotrader.com, which I think was already discounted though.

My friend bit the bullet on plan "C": a 2001 Rola LE, AT/slider/30K. Paid $11,500 with new tires.

Funny helping him remotely. He was so burnt out from the ordeal, he just wanted to buy something to get it done. The hassle of hitting multiple dealers, not finding something they liked, or finally finding a possibility and having it priced through the roof.

I had the same problem trying to find a stick shift in the past. It is a reason that some people just buy new. Might be more espensive, but it is easier and less painful (also much easier to feel confident that you paid a fair market price).

That's what I told him. Of his three choices, the '03 was the best bet. 2K for 2 years newer, new body style, more stuff, and 24k less miles? a bargain for all that. But, it was their money.

    45k miles
    silver
power drivers seat, power doors, locks

Rob, you may want to repost, but, this time, include details like stick or auto? color? region you live in? any hits, dents, or errors?

Rob, basically the car is in perfect condition. No dents, dings and all original paint. 99 Legacy GT LTD sedan located in NH. 120k. Auto, CD, subwoofer, security, leather and moon roof. Silver with silver/gold factory rims. Will need a set of tires.

I did find the Edmunds Trade-in value.

The issue is that the dealer will only allow wholesale value of $3800 on a trade, vs the Edmunds trade in value ranging from $5380 (clean) - $6016 (outstanding).

Is wholesale the best I can do at a dealer? Thanks! Rob M.

My wife and I are looking at getting out from underneath her vehicle, which I married into, and into a new 9-2X with the deals that are going around. Before we were married, she had to drive 80+ hwy miles each day and thus the large number of miles. The good thing was that her dad worked as a shop foreman for a chevy dealer and maintained it for us. The dealer trade in is around 11,000. Would that be about right?

    Location: Dallas, TX
    Year/Make/Model: 2002 Chevy Trailblazer
    Body Style: LT
    Engine: Std v6
    Driveline: RWD
    Mileage:120000
    Color: Black/Gray
Major Options: leather, steering wheel controls, nerf bars, rear air controls
    Condition:
Paint has chips and dings but is still shiny

Probably. It's a 6 YO, 120K used Subaru. They are going to send it to the auction and can only expect to get the wholesale out of it. They aren't going to put it on the lot and try to retail it.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
What, you didn't take the $3,800 and run with it?
You are talking the Sedan with 120K and 6 going on 7 years old.

    Perfect, and it needs tires?
    Perfect, with 120K?

Try average or slightly better than average for the miles and year.
$6000 is retail numbers at the corner lot for that baby.

Yes, wholesale or a couple of hundred back of wholesale is likely the best you can do. Why not find you a corner lot that specializes in import and import performance cars and get a cash buy quote from them? You will probably find that the $3,800 is right on the money or a little better than most cash offers.

$11,000? IMHO probably not even close.

You have some marginal paint for the year, cracked windshield, worn rubber, not even 4WD, and lets not forget about the 120K big ones.

~$11,000 is retail (asking?) numbers with everything repaired.
Given its condition, poor, any dealer looking at it on trade is going to guess that the maintenance has not been up to par and it has had a hard life, which it sounds like it has.

I'm thinking trade side is going to be on the back side of $8,000.

We just picked up an 2002 4WD Chevy Trailblazer, with 129K for under $9,000, and it didn't need tires or windshield. It was nice, needing nothing except super detail (except the prior owner smoked in it) and fluid changes.

As a trade in...this Blazer would most likely go straight to the auction block!!!

Go directly to auction, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Hi, I'm looking at a Saab 9-2X Aero, and considering trading in my '01 A4. Details below. The Saab dealer looked at it today, and offered $10,500, noting only scratches on the alloys (actually, first he said $9500, and then he 'found' another $1k). Edmunds says $13k. The dealer owns an Audi franchise, so I'm sure they can make money on it. What should I hold out for?

    Location: Central New Jersey
    Year/Make/Model: 2001 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro
    Body Style: 4dr
    Engine: 1.8 turbo 4-cylinder, 5-speed
    Driveline: AWD
    Mileage: 53400
    Color: dark blue/black interior
Major Options: sport package (includes suspension and 17-inch wheels), moonroof, xenons, stability control, Bose audio, cold weather package (heated seats, mirrors, ski sack) - pretty much every option available at time of purchase
    Condition:
Dirty, but no problems inside or out, except some minor scratches on wheels
Tires - brand new (less than 200 miles)
    Brakes - fine
Maintenance - performed according to Audi's schedule, by Audi dealer
Other: Bumper was replaced following low-speed rear-end collision

I'd take it for 10.5K, even a round 11K if it was sitting in front of me with a "for sale" sign on it.

Shouldn't say that. I'm even in NJ, but the southern (Phila burb) part.

Don't take that as an offer, just a comment on the price vs. what I perceive to be the value.

Put it in the paper for $13,995 and see what happens. On a trade, 10.5 = 11,100ish with the sales tax credit, so anyother over that (and the cost of the ad) is gravy.

... Looking to trade my 99 Subaru Legacy GT LTD sedan for an 05 Legacy GT LTD.
Car is in excellent condition, well maintained, but has 120k. Edmunds puts trade-in value at 5,300 - 5,800. Dealer offered 3,800 wholesale value on trade. Is this the best I can expect to do short of selling outright? Thanks** ..

    ====================================

There is no such thing as excellent condition .. unless your driving a 04 I35 with 7,700 miles that's been sitting in Granny's garage for the last 6 months ....

I see your from the MA/NH zipcode (you forgot to give me a location) .. bad bad bad, and we don't have much of a description ...

Anywaaaaay ..... we have a 99 Subu Legacy GT 4 type door, we got 120,000 big fat miles -- If ~ the tires are deeper then the Grand Canyon, the service is better than Mortons Steak house, the paint is cleaner than the Space Shuttle, and the interior looks like the Vatican .... then trade side, in and around the super tall $3's, maybe the low low low low low (did I say low.?) low low low low low low $4's ........ $3,800.? "sounds" like the dealer walked the looong mile for this dude, cuz' I'll bet it's not as good as Mortons .... it's a Subu, they get big $$, even with big miles - but not that big ...

Because of your area I would walk it down Retail Rd ... do the service dance, a come to Jesus detail, a Fat Daddy 5/6 liner Ad in the Big paper and: $6,490 *asking* and like the plague, cut this dude loose for the first $5,0/$5,9 ... if it needs stuff, start deducting ...

Park the ego, it's a Subaru Legacy, not a Louis Vuitton ............. properly done, it won't last long .. my guess.? $5,500 would be the target price ...

    Don't forget the update.!

    Terry. ;)
