...... **has 3 Yukon Denalis with the sun/sound package advertised for $39,500 locally**

I'm sure he does have 3 advertised, and you can buy the rest for $42,500 .... if they sell the next 100,000 units at $39,000 then yes, it could effect the resale value, but a pop surge in the market usually doesn't mean much .. I would be more concerned about all that cash back and cheap leases on Bimmers than Denali's right now ..

But in the car biz .. it's the end of the year and most plants are closing for the updates and the dealers are gearing up for the 06's .. plus it's summer north of the Mason Dixon line, and most dealers will be looking to cut and snip most of their "hard" inventory and the 10k one could probably be bought for $37ish right now, cuz' everyone is lookin' for converts, sport types and Vans .... in 90 /120 days (depending on the weather up north) most buyers will switch gears and be lookin' for something else, probably SUV's and 4x4 types ...... we need to get you out more ..l.o.l....

    Repost for you Terry:
Can you give me some idea of what to expect on this:
    2004 Audi Allroad 2.7T
    13k
    Tiptronic
Silver w/ grey two-tone Heated Leather
    Premium Pkg
    Xenons
    XM
    Winter Pkg
    Deep Round things
    No shopping cart wounds
No FFFFs (that's French Fry Food Fights) inside
Bought new last August - love it, but looking to move down scale in all areas - fuel consumption, pymt, and insurance premiums.
Parked in a place where the Gov'na has a baseball glove for a first name and those who came out of the closet can get a gin-u-ine marriage license...
    ==============================

You ain't kidding .. and the "the Big Dig" is about 200 million over budget, 10 years overdue and it's still falling down, but lets keep handing out those marriage license's ..l.o.l...

Good description - thanks ...... 2004 Audi Allroad 2.7T .. we have the right color, miles are almost low for the year, we have the Prem pack, blinders, cold pack and you say no battles at Burger King, these have to be super clean and super nice to get any $$ ..... if so, then trade side, in and around the low/mid $30ish figure, might maybe find a dealer to stagger towards the $31,0 figure ....

    Don't forget the update .................... ;)

I'm looking at a used car from a new car dealer. So far it looks very good, will take it to my mechanic to do compression test etc. Only apparent negative is that the former owner was a smoker--no burn marks, nothing visible, only the smell lingers on. I don't see anything about that in the Edmunds appraiser. How much should be taken off the price for this (01 merc grand marq GS 64K looks good clean condition, except the smoke, asking $9K)? Also, any way to get rid of the smell if I buy it?
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
There SHOULD be a MASSIVE deduction for a "smoked out" car but there isn't an official deduction for this.

If you are a non smoker and are bothered by this DO NOT buy the car. The smell will NOT go away. There is nothing you can spray inside the car that will kill the odor. It will diminish with time but it'll always be there.

Dog odor is even worse! We have had to take nice but "smoked out" or "dog cars" to the auction because of this.

And, yes, we will adjust our appraisals accordingly.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
The smell will always be in the car. If you are a non-smoker, look for another one. On hot summer days the smell will reek so bad when you open the door, you will wish you had never bought the car.

Yes, there should be a deduction for smoked out or other foul odor car.
On the rare occasion when someone tried to trade in a car not ready for the junk yard at the BHPH lot, if it is smoked out, he simply rates it as poor no matter what the overall condition.

What might I expect on the trade side for this one? I'm in Wilmington, NC but might end up driving up the road to Raleigh to make the right new car transaction.

2002 Honda Accord EX V6 coupe
(that's V6/auto/comes with everything, including leather/sunroof/6 CD and all that)
    49,000 miles
    gold w/ tan leather interior

exterior is free of dents/dings/scratches, but rear bumper cover has been replaced and some minor work done to driver's door, in separate incidents.
interior is clean, leather looks good but perhaps aging a little fast
tires are new, brakes are original and down to about 25%
all scheduled maintenance completed and a glove box full of receipts if needed.

    Thanx in advance....

Personally, I'm an ex-smoker (quit about 40 years ago), and it didn't seem so bad for the few miles I drove it. My wife, on the other hand...? I'll take it to her first BEFORE the mechanic and the title check! So do you think 9000 is high for this car, which looks beautifully clean to the naked eye, assuming my mechanic passes it?

Terry, what's this worth to a dealer in Chicago?

2004 VW Touareg V8 with all the options, premium plus package, including air suspension, nav and upgraded leather, plus 4 zone climatronic, parking assistance and winter package. Dark blue metallic with light tan interior. 4500 miles on the odometer and 3 1/2 years left on the warranty.

    Thanks,

her to look at something that depreciates a bit faster such as a MPV or Quest. She is determined to get the Odyssey but wants her payment to stay in the $375 range? I told her I didn't think it was gonna happen. I also told her not to buy that Malibu and you see where that got her.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
    $375/month?
Why not... $20 OTD, $1k down, finance the rest for 5 years, make your last payment on a 9-year-old car.

Sounds like a winner to me...

    Hi Terry,

First time on this board and am curious about the private sale value of the following: 2003 Infiniti G35 Coupe - Laser Red/Willow(tan) 23,000 miles
    Midwest location
    Leather edition - not 6MT
Every option except satellite radio and splash guards
Transferable extended warranty - 6yr/72,000 miles
Paint and interior protectant with warranty
Almost brand new Blizzaks mounted on 17" 7-spoke ASA wheels.
    Immaculate condition.
    Thanks for your input.

If that price is legit I want one...where are they? Even with the new incentives I believe the differential is more like $8-$9K.

......... IF ~ no paint work, no Swirlomatic car washes, rubber is from yesterday and the service is up to date .. then trade side, in and around the $25ish figure ....... down Retail Rd, deep sneaks, perfect polish, all the history on the front seat: $29,495 *asking* and let it find a new home for the first $27,9/$28,5 .... the warranty and low miles should sell this one ....

    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    ........ It all depends ....

I'm still a smoker and 99.5% of the folks that get in my drivers can never tell .. what will give it away is, the Marlboro pack on the seat ..

That said, I always use the windows to vent, the slider is usually cracked and I don't use the ashtrays .. maybe one person out 200 will pick it up, of course you always have the person that never smelled smoke and find the pack and go "I knew this was a smokers car" - when folks come to my home they never smell smoke until I light up .. these are also the same folks that talk with little green men in silver suits, but I digress ........

If someone has smoked a ton in a closed vehicle, used all the ashtrays and don't get them cleaned, then the smoke can end-up in the car forever .. most good detailers have whats called an "Extractor" and properly used they can get "most", not all of the smell out .. these are usually the same folks that have Hershey wrappers and Cat hair in the glove box since 1997 ............

If the Merc is clean with deep sneaks, cold breeze, super serviced, great history and no rebuilds .. then $9,0 is a fair price .... dealers are paying $7,5++ for them .....

Good luck and let us know .....

    Terry.

on the BMW. Dealer wanted $19,998 for it AND upon further inspection we realized it did not have a sunroof? I was shocked. Reminds me of the time I saw a 1997 Lexus ES300 with cloth interior .. some things are just unexpected.
    On another note ..
A co-worker is trying to work this deal out..
Trade: 2004 Chevrolet Malibu LS (new body-style)
    3.5L engine
    16,000 miles
    Silver exterior/gray cloth interior
Power windows, locks, mirrors, alloy wheels, CD player, factory remote start.
Car is in good condition overall but she does have damage on the driver's side door where her sister swiped her with her Trailblazer.
Interior is clean .. non-smoker. No rips or stains.
Trying to purchase: 2002 Honda Odyssey
    EX model with cloth interior
    55,000 miles
    White exterior/cloth interior
In OK condition .. needs a new windshield and the tires are a little worn.
Runs great and the interior is clean.
What's a fair trade/purchase price in the Atlanta market? Dealer offered $12,000 for the Malibu and wanted $19,500 for the Odyssey.
    =================================

No sunroof on a coupe Bimmer ..?!? .... might as well add 25,000 miles to it, might as well hang a new fender on it, maybe slash the drivers seat ---- it's the kiss of death ...... cloth in a ES300.? I've seen 2 out of 10,000(?) ... I once saw an Audi A8 with no slider -------and------ no leather ... some dealer in Virginia bought it .. "I think" I saw it at a Home Depot a few months ago as a plant stand, either that or they were going to make a barbecue grill out of it ..l.o.l....

$12,000 is all the money on a 04 16K Malibu, especially with $300/$500ish in repairs, I have a feelin' $1,000 of that is "overallowance" .... the dealer might "maybe" have the mid $16's in the Ody with 55k ... I would think they could trade for a $7,0/$7,500 *difference* .. so it seems they're on the $$ ....

    Hi Terry & others,
Would you please tell me what my car is worth in Austin, TX:

    1998 Ford Mustang GT
    handshaker
    4.6 V8
    49K miles (yep, that's all)
Red fire (the dark red, not the bright red)
tan leather interior, no tears or rips
    good rubber
not a mark on it, never hit, always garaged
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... I see you've posted a few times .. sorry I missed ya, I'm not the quickest turtle in the race .....

Austin, nice town .. almost thought about moving there, it's just a little too far west for my goin' on's .....

Anyhoo ...... EL Coupe', right ...? .... we have a 98 'Stang GT, the miles are looooow, it's ruby red mica (good choice) with tan guts, we have the V8 "thang", meat clever and you say it might be nice ...... if it's as clean as you think it is, the sun hasn't burned the seats or the rear deck, the air goes Polar and it looks/drives and feels like an 02 .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $5's, if it's Extreeemely clean and nice, glows in the dark and it needs -0-, then you might "maybe" find a dealer to drop the low/mid $6's in it ........ me personally, down Retail Rd it would go - these are still popular and sell well (the nice ones) .. finish any service, superb detail, a wonderful 5/6 liner Ad in the Big paper with some great Pics and $8,950 *asking* and kick and whimper at $8,0/$8,5 .. but take it .... properly done, it won't last long -- remember, clean cars get clean money - and dirty cars get dirty money ......

Good luck and let me know what happens ......

I initially posted this right before MD weekend. Giving it another shot. Thanks!

    Sport Package w/5 speed stick
    Power Sunroof/Windows
    CD Changer in trunk
    Silver with black interior
Very good condition with the exception of a couple of door dings, a small chip on the windshield, and some small scratches on the rear bumper.
I just put new tires on last year, plus I also have a set of steel wheels with Blizzaks for winter driving.
The interior is in excellent shape.
Although I keep the car in NYC, 99% of the miles are highway.
Don't laugh, but the current mileage on the vehicle is 50,200.
I also had factory cruise control added and a driver's right side armrest.
Current trade values that I'm seeing are running anywhere from $4500 to an unofficial quote of $6200 through Carsdirect.
I'm looking to trade it on a Honda Accord V6 coupe w/6 speed manual.
Any thoughts on realistic expectations would be appreciated. Thanks!

I went to carsdirect.com after seeing the local advertised prices. They had the same vehicle listed for $40,500 at my zip code. Granted $1,000 more than the locally advertised prices, but a far cry form the $8-9K difference you are seeing.
  • frnkrzzofrnkrzzo Member Posts: 87
you're looking at a 6k - 6.5k rig. they would more than likely jump on a 7k - 7.5k offer. anything to get rid of a grand marquis.
  • frnkrzzofrnkrzzo Member Posts: 87
easy to figure this one out. figure out how much you think it's worth, then cut it in half. discoveries are the worst of the land rover trades. after 30k miles, they drop value like a brick. i guess the upshot is you can buy a used one cheap. without referencing anything, i'm going to guess 11k - 12k.
  • frnkrzzofrnkrzzo Member Posts: 87
wow. heres something you never see. lemme get this straight. you want to get rid of a 1 year old luxury car that i imagine you owe a substantial amount on, buy a new, economical car and downscale payments? unless you made a substantial downpayment on the audi, you probably wont even be able to find a bank that will take a loan like this. you cant role, say $10000 negetive equity into a focus. keep your audi. it'll be cheaper than what youre thinking of doing.

I'm amazed by the large # of posters here (or via their friends) who ask for advice, then ignore it all, & do whatever questionable transaction they were set on in the first place. On a practical note, what is the payment on a brand new Odyssey?
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
Many people do that. They ask your opinion, and if you don't tell them what they want to hear (that is, what they already think), they ask someone else. Eventually someone will agree with them.

Sometimes you know something is a bad idea, but you still want to validate that it is, before you do it.

....I don't understand how or why folks with what sounds like a fairly tight budget, who probably wanted/needed a minivan in 2004, instead bought a quickly depreciating domestic sedan then decide they want to trade it 'up' on something two years older?

Me personally I can smell a smoker's car before I open the door. I have always avoided those cars, just a major turn off for me. Well, that and my asthma plus severe allergies to smoke just make a smoker's car unbearable. Probably one reason I tend to buy new. Maybe that's just me, I dunno. I sold a truck one time for having wet carpets, guess I'm just fussy, lol.

MD weekend ...? ... anytime you get lost in the traffic, just repost .. between my accordion lessons and the grass growing contest I get pretty busy ...

In NYC ..... we have a 96 BMW 318ti, we have tiny little miles, sport pack, handshaker, slider, good color combo for the area, tunes, we have some kisses on the sides, bumper and a bullet in the windshield .....

These are funny little cars with a funny little market .. kinda like the Benz C230's coupes, you buy the name, not a car, plus it's a 318 ...... the miles are low so the service has to be done, stuff like belts, brakes, batterys, hoses etc .. sometimes low miles means it "might" need $500+ in just stuff to get it to "average" condition, nothing is cheap on a Bimmer and it's a hb coupe with a handshaker ...... depending on the dealer, trade side in and around the mid/high $3's, might maybe get lucky and get somebody to wander into the low low low low low low low low $4's if they've been on Steroids long enough ........

If everything is 110% (and then some) I would roll my dice down Retail RD .. it's NY and you have a big buying market ... finish any service, get with the detail gods, drop a super 14 day 5/6 liner Ad in the "big" paper, have all the service records stuck to your forehead and: $6,900 *asking* and squeal and holler at $5,9/$6,5 - but take it .... I'm sure you can find some nutty artist or some "wanna be" Trump to take it off your hands ...

Happy hunting -- don't forget the update.!!

You couldn't pay me to drive a car that reeks of cigarette smoke. And I'm a former smoker. I don't mean ordinary smokers who drive with the windows down. I mean the cars where you open the door and your eyes water. There is no way you could ever get the smell out.

We were offered $30,000 total last week for both vehicles trade-in so we got up and walked. Then they said MAYBE they could do $31,500. What could I expect trade-in and selling privately? Thanks.

We're looking to trade in 2 vehicles next week and I've done some homework on trade-in values, but I'd like your opinion:

    Atlanta, GA
    2004 Chevy Tahoe LT
    2WD
    5.3 V8 Bi-Fuel
    18500 miles
    Black
Fully loaded - DVD, XM, 6 disc CD player, Bose speakers, sunroof, integrated phone, 3rd row seating, captain's chairs in middle row, leather, towing, running boards, traction assist, etc.
Excellent condition - no dings, no scratches, no stains. Still has some of the new smell even.
Oil changed regularly at Chevy dealer.
    No accidents.

    Atlanta, GA
    2000 Honda Accord EX Coupe
    V6
    109,000 miles
    Black
Fully loaded V6 - leather, CD player, sunroof - all standard in EX package. Also has a spoiler.
Good condition. No accidents. A couple of small door dings. No stains inside.
All maintenance as scheduled done at Honda dealer.
  • frnkrzzofrnkrzzo Member Posts: 87
that sounds like a more than fair trade to me. if it was me though, i'd keep the honda and sell it privately. it really doesnt have any trade in value at all being over 100k miles. privately, you might get 5 thousand for it. i would then try to get 28 or 29 on the tahoe as a trade in, because that one would be a lot harder to sell privately. though why anyone would want to trade a 1 year old vehicle eludes me.
  • frnkrzzofrnkrzzo Member Posts: 87
oops. i messed up. i was thinking 2002. make the trade 7000 - 8000. my appologies.

Terry, please evaluate the following for trade-in.

    Tucson, AZ
    2003 Toyota Highlander NON Limited
    V6 2wd
    25,000 miles
    Gold/ ivory cloth interior
From the orig Monroney: ..Roof rack, moonroof, tow prep, tow hitch, alloy wheels (5), mud guards, privacy glass, keyless entry, tonneau cover, 8 way power drivers seat, homelink, engine immobilizer, carpet/cargo mat set, rear spoiler.
Added: auto-dimming rear view mirror w/compass, fog lights

This vehicle has been well cared for: oil changed every 4-5k, tires rotated (5) waxed every 6 mnths, garaged, no dents scratches, tires are orig, but appear to have about 10,000 miles left (est) still decent amount of tread showing. Brakes? orig 4 wheel disc. Most miles have been highway, so I bet over 50% left on brakes..no bodywork or ins claims.

Also, even tho it has tow stuff, it has never towed anything.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

Thanks Terry. If I can actually get the $6,200 from carsdirect, I'll probably go that route then. On the other hand, there's a little voice in the back of my head saying "just drive it until it falls apart." :D

With that low of mileage, you won't have any trouble selling that car..

Heck, you had three of us salivating over it, right here...

You've got the stick (believe it or not, most that I see are automatic), sport pack, good color combo and itty bitty miles.. You could sell it in a couple of days, easy... While the general market didn't like these, BMW enthusiasts and track-rats love them.. You have all the right options for that crowd.. With the stick, you probably won't sell it to Muffy for a graduation present.. but, you will find plenty of others that want it.

but probably not the last. Any of you guys who know the wholesale market.

I'm interested in what dealers are paying for loaded V8 Touaregs in Chicago and Los Angeles. In Chicago, a 2005 model, dark blue mettalic, tan interior, with 2,000 miles and 3 1/2 years left on the new car waranty. In L.A., a 2004 model, beige metallic with brown and gray ("teak") interior, with 13,000 miles and 2 1/2 years left on the warranty.

Both have the premium package, air suspension, nav, winter package, and parking assistance, and are in like new condition. Msrps were over 50.

As to why one would trade a one year old vehicle, there are many reasons, like it wasn't what they expected, it burns too much gas and they didn't expect gas prices to go this high, they realized they can't afford the payments, they were transferred to Saudi Arabia, they lost their job, they got divorced, and, oh yes, there's someting wrong with the car.

    I'm trading in a:

    2005 Toyota Highlander
    V6 (Non limited Highlander)
    6000 miles
    Northern VA 20148 area
    AWD
    Silver/Grey cloth interior
    Towing package
    power driver's seat
    moonroof
    rook rack
    power windows/doors/mirrors
No dings, stains, damage, excellent condition
    CD player
    Front and rear side/head airbags

KBB says $24,900 for blue book value ...is that fairly close?

    Thanks!

that still around? Stop teasing me.

Terry's numbers (high 5's) retail seemed to be about what makes sense to me, if it is super clean.

That's the type of car that if it showed up local, I would troll out a modest low ball (say 5K cash on the hood) to see what happened. If I landed it, the tC would go, and I would still have a 2 door hatch, but a large wad of cash to go with it.
