But the template in the door jamb that has the manuf date was missing. Someone peeled it off...???

The valve cover has a plastic lid that has been off (why???) and is held on with 3 of four bolts ..?? it rattles when you drive.

which appears to be pretty straight from the auction, with a GMAC sticker still in the windshield. He told our post-doc that he's a car dealer, >>>but he's got private plates on the car...

    got the VIN# ?

    NO!

Like a yahoo, I didn't copy it down. I asked the guy where he got it, and he said the Flint auction.... so I thought I might be able to track it with the help of a local friend... no luck.

    Stupid I know.

.. **the thing is, the guy is asking $6 for it, and that's a really good price as near as I can tell in the present market. So I encouraged him to pursue it so long as he has it checked out** ...

    $6,0 seems awful cheap for a 02 (even a base) with 36k ... I'm paying more than that for 01 LSI's ..

I HAVE A 2001 HONDA ACCORD 4DR SEDAN BASE MODEL (NO FRILLS). IT HAS 73,000 MILES WITH NO MAJOR MECHANICAL PROB'S OR SCRATCHES. IT'S CLOTH UPHOLSTERY WITH BRAND NEW TIRES. I WENT TO PRICE A USED '02 FORD EXPLORER AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD ONLY GIVE ME $4,250 FOR MY HONDA TRADE IN. kELLEY BLUE BOOK VALUES THE SAME CARE AT $5,350. RIGHT NOW I OWE $10,600 ON IT. i KNOW, I PAID TOO MUCH IN THE FIRST PLACE, THIS WAS MY FIRST CAR.

MY HONDA HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND MOST OF THE 73,000 MILES ARE HIGHWAY MILES. SHOULD I TRY TO SELL IT MYSELF, WHICH IS AVERAGING $8000 ONLINE OR JUST TRY SOME OTHER DEALERS?
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
    Stop yelling.
Do you have the $11,000 to get the title in hand?
If not you are going to have a much harder time selling it.

    Been here, done this.

The short answer is YES. A LOT.

The long answer depends on who your insurance company is, who hit you, their insurance, the body shop that fixes the damage, whether the tech that does the repair was sober...

Basically, nobody really wants your Voyager any more. You will be able to entice people into a deal they really don't want by lowering your selling price. They will assume the worst, and you'll have to prove otherwise. If you succeed, they'll deduct for having to explain the story to the next guy or gal. This is called "diminished value". Depending on the vehicle, DV is between 10 and 30% of market. (Ok, a 1992 Taurus with 175,000 miles loses nothing while an SL600 might well drop 50% after fighting with the lamp-post leaving the lot.)

As with separating your trade-in from the new car cost, you should recognize that you now have a trade-in (damaged) and three insurance and/or liability (tort) claims (The other two drivers & your insurance company) They are completely independent concepts - your possession and/or repair of the vehicle should* not affect your recovery. Your recovery will most certainly not affect what you can get for the vehicle.

    * The _only_ time an insurance company would have a say in this is if you decided to file a claim with your insurer on a collision or comprehensive basis. Then, the terms of your contract dictate the rules of engagement. Otherwise it's a liability/tort claim and their role is to write a check for your loss.

On a personal note, if you're really within days of pulling the trigger on trading and you can afford to do the deal on the lowered value, I would do so**. If you can't get a full recovery of the difference this will cost a few bucks in the end, but you never have to argue with adjusters, body shops, worry about the quality of the repair... You will resolve the situation, get you a new-to-you car, free yourself up to get on with life, and establish a loss basis upon which to claim and/or sue. Plus, you won't be sitting around months later significantly out of pocket trying to find time to sue 10 different defendants and posting insurance diatribes on Edmunds. Not that I would know or anything.

** Confirm this with someone who knows what they're talking about first. Seriously.

You may find http://www.ican2000.com/dvfaqs.html useful, and you should definitely check out Questions About Auto Insurance & Accidents (next door at unbelievable, "Questions About Auto Insurance & Accidents" #717, 7 Mar 2005 1:48 pm ) A word of caution - some of the DV "consultants" out there feel pretty... slippery.

** Confirm this with someone who knows what they're talking about first. Seriously.

This may hinge on whether you have a first-party claim (against your own policy) or a third-party claim (against the other party's policy). In my jurisdiction, the outlook is not good if it's a first-party claim. You should talk to someone experienced in insurance law if you wish to dump the van as-is, before repairs.

    Terry,

ol' wise one of the green course...someone ask me the other day if golf was a real sport...they see no sport in hitting a little round white thing...walking...finding it...and then hitting it again...they say it is a repetitive pattern...go figure...

anywooo (where have I seen that word before?), on the Benz, I looked in my small change pocket...nothing...look in my wallet, all it said was "Help Me"...

    Bottom Line...I'm so poor, I can't even pay attention...(pause for the ha..ha..)
Thanks for the info...may the golf god's smile upon you!

Hope you had a great 4th. I spent it on Cape Cod. Now there's a target rich golf environment. You should check it out sometime.

    --------------------------------------------------
Terry, I need some help guesstimating my daughters cars value. It's a 97 Pontiac Grand Am 2-dr SE Coupe, 60K, Black w/gray cloth, V6, Auto, CD, pop-up moon roof thingie, PW/PDL, rear spoiler, cruise, cold AC, that's about it for extras. Condition is average, there is some minor damage to front driver side corner from a fender bender accident, the paint is fair overall, tires need replacing, interior would be excellent if it weren't for a couple of burn spots from a previous owner, engine/tranny runs strong but the charge light comes on occasionally without notice, everything else works, it's located in MA..

OK, by now you get the picture. It'll get you to Jimmy's Harborside... but it's not usually parked out front by the valet. I figure/hope it might be worth more than a really good set of golf clubs and a weekend at the Boston TPC.

It seems the miles and the drivetrain are the best things it has going for it. Overall curb appeal is probably only fair-to-middle'n though. But, what sayeth the great automotive sage?

    Thanks.

    Hi Terry,

I was sent here from the "Mitsubishi Galant" forum by Pat - sounds like you're quite the expert around here! I would really appreciate it if you could give me an idea of what I should look for in trading in my car. Here's my info:

    2001 Galant GTZ (fully loaded)
    Dover White Pearl/Gray leather interior
    52,400 miles
with 4 brand new tires - B F Goodrich Traction TA

    Options added:
    6 disc in-dash CD player
    Wind deflector for sunroof
    Wheel locks
    Pinstripe

This car is in great condition and has been well maintained (although I'm not sure I can locate ALL the records). It runs great, handles very well and I've had no mechanical problems with it. However, I was involved in an accident when it was only 3 months old - hit from behind and into a car in front. The damage was repaired and there are no signs in the operation of the car that any damage was done (really! I've had cars before that never ran the same after an accident).

Thanks for any input/advice! Have a great day,

    Buzz A

Terry -- Looks like a lot of folks are asking for advice but if you're not too busy, would you mind offering your opinion on the following?

    Location: Central Virginia
    Year/Make/Model: 2000 Dodge Stratus SE
    Body Style: 4dr
    Engine: 2.4L I4 DOHC 16V FI Engine
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage: ~60,000
Color: Metallic Taupe Exterior/Dark Grey Interior
Major Options: Auto, Cruise, Power Locks, Power Seat
    Condition:
Exterior has a small ding or two (guess would be a shopping cart) but I expect they could be removed. Paint looks good, but the hood had to be re painted after I noticed some peeling. All in all, the outside is in very good condition.
Interior is in excellent shape. No scratches on console, no tears in fabric and has been kept relatively clean. Non-smoker and no weird smells.

    Tires -
Front tires replaced ~12,000 miles ago and showing some wear
Rear tires replaced ~6,000 miles ago

    Brakes -
Front brakes and rotors replaced recently

    Maintenance -
Oil changes between 2500-3000 miles but didn't keep receipts or records. Receipts kept for all other work (rotors, tires, etc)

Other: No claims, but did have the hood repainted after I noticed some peeling.

    Appreciate any information! Thanks.

Was wondering if you could help me figure the trade in value as I'm starting to look this weekend for a new car.

    1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS
    4 cycl, auto, fwd
    80,000 miles
    Minden Pearl Silver
Options: Power Package (cruise control, mirrors, windows, door locks), Sun Roof, AM/FM/Cassette
good condition (paint is good, interior is good, car is clean)
    4 new tires (@5000 miles, Michelin MXV4s)
    brakes replaced at 60,000 miles
all maintenance performed on schedule, all receipts in a file folder
    - 1 repair, water pump leak @35,000mi, covered by warranty

    blemishes
    - hairline crack in the rear tail light
    - foam that seals the tailgate starting to crack and peal from age

Located in St. Louis, Missouri (always garaged, 1 owner)

KBB suggests the trade in value is about 4600 and the private party sale is about 5900. I'd like to get 4000. Think that's possible?

    Thanks

    Neil,

I assume you mean the tires were replaced 5,000 miles ago, not that they were replaced at 5,000 odometer miles, which would mean that you could see the air in them by now....

If the blemishes are noticeable, you might consider finding a replacement taillight from a junkyard car and installing it yourself. I wouldn't bother with the weather stripping unless it was really bad.

Terry mentioned del sols on july 6 (hope it's Ok to quote):

*The Del Sol's ..........? Nutso prices and it's a fantasy market ... they're like boat owners, same thing: says the price is based on what she's seen them going for .. My question is always: "where, in Morocco ?" .. boat owners say the same stupid stuff, they have an offer - but they never sell ..

The funny part is, there has to be 5/6 Del Sols for sale in my area and they've been up for sale for 2/3 months - and like clock work, they come in every month and ask me if I've changed my mind and will I give them $5,000 for their 96Si .. for what.? it's a $2,000 car, "maybe" .. it's got 155k, *

"what is a good price for both"--for the dealer, $4995 is fantastic, for him. For your friend, $2500 maybe (my guess). Then there's the 136K miles.....even Hondas can be pricy to maintain after 10 years.

Looking at a white with red leather guts , 7k miles , 5-speed, hard top, alloys,at a new car store who says a couple bought it new and sold it back to them. Now it is the only used GT they have and it looks new inside and out. They are only accepting sticker price for their new GT's, so shouldn't they take less than new car sticker for this one with 7,000 miles? If so , how much should I offer. This is located in Atlanta.......Im going to try and do this deal Sat.
so your advice is needed in a hurry ,please..............Jay (will update you either way)

I am looking to trade in 2002 Hyundai Sante Fe GLS V6 - 75K mi...no mechanical problems...has leather...no Sun Roof...some tread left on tires....scratch on side of car from scraping garage door frame.

I researched using Edmunds.com and I also looked online at what other owners of this model are asking for similar mileage (69-100 K mi)...and typical ask price is $12,999.

So I figure a dealer should be willing to give me 9500-10,000 if he will flip it and make 1500 or so? Am I being unrealistic? What should I expect as an initial dealer offer on this trade-in and shoudl I challenge it no matter what they offer initially?

    Thanks.

BTW me-thinks the $9500-10K are retail numbers for a 2002 Hyundai GLS 4WD.
I see several advertised with 50K-70K at dealers lots for $10,900 ASKING.

    Amen on the confirmation...

Still, though, in a perfect world I don't see why the Ins Co would care... No supplementals, no nothing. Quick resolution all around. OTOH, the possibility of supplementals probably depresses the price more than it should, so in practice... the Real World Trade In Value should be artificially depressed, no? ;)

I'm thinking about moving up to the 2005 version of same car (but in blue), if the price is right for new and trade/private sale... Would appreciate your estimate of appropriate trade-in and private sale values for my 2002 Accord EX MT.

**I'm thinking about moving up to the 2005 version of same car (but in blue),** ............ are you nuts.? .. you have a nice car now - take it to Earl Sheib and have it painted blue (yuk) ..

Anywaaaaaaay .. in the Hudson Valley of NY, we have this low low mile 02 Hooonda EX with the 4 banger ... the color is just ok, the miles are low, slider, wheels, all the typical EX stuff and we got a handshaker (not good) ..... if the service is right, the paint is better, the rubber is strong .. then trade side, in and around the low/mid $11's, might maybe get a dealer to wander towards the $12 figure ... the handshaker kills it and the low miles might save it ..... down the windy road of Retail Rd.? super bath, super Ad and $14,495 *asking* and cut it loose for the first $13/$13,9 ..... might be a little tuff to sell, tax savings difference in NY - right.? .....

The dealer has an Autocheck online of the vehicle. I guess it is like a carfax maybe. It shows one owner and that it went to auction on 6/9/05 New England Region. I would love to know what he may have in it so I dont overly lowball him $2500 sounds great to me.

Before going to test drive I gave the dealership a call to see if all maintenence was up to date and to see if there was any room for movement on the price.
He told me it needs a new timing belt and He was pretty firm on the 4995 so I said thanks and good luck.

    Here is another Del Sol.

    This one is a VTEC

    Located in Southern New Hampshire.

    1994 Honda Del Sol VTEC
    Black/Black cloth

Havent seen it yet but would like to know what would be a good deal for both.

    Independant store is asking $3995

    Vin is

Looking at a 2002 Accord Coupe EX in Memphis TN for sale at a Honda dealer
    Location: Elvisland
    Body Style: 2dr
Engine: 3.0 liter, 6 cylinder, auto
    Driveline: FWD
    Mileage: 47K
    Color: white exterior/ tan leather
Major Options: loaded with all of the EX goodies, power everything, 6 disc changer, TCS, cruise, etc. including rear spoiler
Condition: no evidence of any paintwork, in v good condition in and out
    Tires - new
    Brakes - dont know
    Maintenance - don't know
Other: dealer got from auction and the car lived its life in NJ (I suspected such by the slightly rusted exterior of the exhaust system and slight surface rust on some of the undercarriage bolt heads). Now for the odd part. The car is offered as a CPO, BUT the title check showed that the original lease title had an "exceeds mechanical limits" title in NJ! Could this just have been a documentation error?
Here is the VIN#, 1HGCG22512A006708. What do you think the dealer has in it?
    Should I pass or ?
    Thanks!

A local owner of an independent dealer, Bowman Automotive, closed up in the middle of the night and everything was gone. Since May they have been "selling" cars and taking in trades and not doing business properly. For example: one owner now has a problem with 3 lenders. The lender who repossessed the car he bought because Bowman did not pay off the persons loan who traded the car in. His bank on the car he traded in because the dealer did not pay off his car loan, no one knows where his trade in is sitting right now as the owner of the dealer cannot be contacted. Plus the bank that loaned him the money to buy the car that now has been repossessed by the prior owners bank. This person never received the title paperwork from the dealership, so the car was never able to be registered in his name. As a result the third bank has not received the title, but has the signed loan documents from the dealership already.

I am not even sure who is ultimately responsible for the whole situation. The loans were arranged by Bowman Automotive and paperwork signed at the dealership. Aside from contacting the States Attorney General, which most of these people have done, what are the options.

I'm thinking that since the transaction was never completed because the title paperwork was not delivered, that the third lender has to go after the dealership to recoup its money, not the buyer of the car. Do the banks regularly issue the checks to the dealers before they get the titles? BHPH doesn't have to worry about this.

It is just a bad deal all the way around for a lot of people.

The history doesn't show any accidents .. that said, NH doesn't show mileage either ..l.o.l... but it's a one owner ...

$3,995...? it's a V-Tec and these little critters get some money - wholesale or retail ..... this one shows small miles and the price is right, if your lookin' to spend $2,000 then give it up ... winter/summer it ain't going to happen unless you can find a guy that just busted out in Vegas or just came out of a coma .. they're kinda like Harleys, drop them in the garage in cold snowy Ohio and wait til' spring and you'll get "all" the money ...

This is located in Atlanta....... Im going to try and do this deal Sat.
so your advice is needed in a hurry ,please.............. Jay (will update you either way)
    ================================

05 Stang el coupe' GT with 7,000 miles ..... the miles are lowish, the color works in Hotlanta and we got that movin' around thing between the seats .... no hits, no runs no errors...? .. if so, then the dealer probably paid in and around super tall $25's low/mid $26's, maybe more .. I'm thinkin' $28/$30ish(?) on the Retail side.? -- these dudes are aaaall over the place money wise, I mean they can go for $30,000 to $38,000 on the wholesale side ... and no, that's not a missprint, a MSO GT in Tampa just rung the bell at (GULP.!) $38,000 big ones -- American money .... Yowzaa.! ................... so pick a number.

........ Hmm, it's hard to say .. based on what your telling me, it sounds like the dealer might have been "double flushing" the inventory .. the lender that carries his floorplan will will getting their money first and holding on to his private attachments ....

Terry , thanks for your wisdom on the 2005 mustangs. Update, the dealer started at 29,000and came down to 28495{ mind you, this car new stickered at 27900} , so I just couldn't stomach him asking more than sticker for a used car with 7k miles. I know the market is hot but I didnt want the car that bad. BUt thanks again for you help.
Also what is a "MSO" mustang, and where are the GT's plentiful and cheap, How long do you see these inflated prices----through the 2006 models? Jay

Don't want to step on Terry's toes, but my 4 month old '05 Mustang GT, with 3K miles on the odo had an offer of $28K from a Toyota dealer. I paid $25,500 this past winter for it (X plan). That $28K number is the MSRP. Don't know if that's a good reference point, but it gives you an idea of how crazy that market is.

MSO is a manufacturers statement of origin. Basically what is sent to the state and turns into a title. So a MSO mustang is a new untitled car.
