Re: putting the OP's car FS on the Saab site; a good idea, can't hurt. But the prices there are ASKING prices. If you check "completed listings" on e-bay, it shows you what the cars actually sold for. Seems to be a ton of bids there on nice ones, & even junky ones will sell at some price. And I agree with the guys who said the old style 900's with the three-speed automatic were total dogs, kind of ruined the car IMO. if I still lived down the street from a good Saab mechanic, I could be tempted by a nice low mileage, 900S or turbo convert. 5 sp......if I get serious, I'll check the saab site you recommend as well as ebay.....
Never fear, this is not something I'm looking at, but... ... this is for "real-world" stuff, so I'm reporting.
Friends of ours had this car for sale for some time: 99 G Cherokee (non-limited) 75k miles Red, 4x4 (dunno which kind), cloth Clean, non-smoker, one owner, maintained, etc. etc. Dunno about the tires.
So they have it in the paper, for $9,800 asking and very few calls. One guy comes to look at it, but no offer. After 3 weeks, the ad runs out, and now it's in the driveway with a for-sale sign on it, and no plates, and they are complaining about insuring a car they don't drive. [Kudos for actually keeping insurance and keeping it driveable]
Fast forward a coupla weeks and it's time for the annual neighborhood garage sale. Some older dude with $$ buys it for his daughter for (drum roll) $9,400 cash :surprise:
I'm so grateful to my charming wife who told me in no uncertain terms to NOT to give them advice. Which would have been, it's a $7 car real money and that they should try a quick $7,900 to get it done, and maybe ask $8,500.
............ Mathias ... sometimes it's better not to get involved with neighbors and friends when it comes to "advice" ......
My neighbor just closed on his house for exactly what he was *asking* for it, so I will be hearing about this for the next 20 years .... of course he'll forget that was 2 years ago when I said: "you'll never see it that price" .... and no, he'll never do the math ..l.o.l....
As far as the GC .. if it's a clean 99 V6 4x4 Laredo with 75k, then it would do the low/mid $7's at the auction and be a $9,900 on the Retail *asking* side .......... $9,400.?? not so bad ...!
Planning to go down retail road. Fair asking price?

Well ........................ hmm, uhh .. it's a 95 plastic fantastic Pontiac Trans Sport SE minivan in Portland ... it's got some big miles, we got some faded paint (a no-charge option in 95/96/97) we got the no-sale green thing going on, newer rubber and stoppers .... what can I say.? .. it's a $300/$500 vehicle on the trade side, maybe .. and maybe a $1,900 thingy bob on the Retail side - and I would take anything over $500 if we have Arctic air, maybe ............ nice pic, kinda ..

We have a 03 Saab 4dr 9-3 Linear with 49k .... it's got the handshaker, good color, slider, 17's, hydes, zone air, blinders, new stoppers, partial rubber, new foot work, we have a little driveway drama and you say the service is 100% ...
Not much going on here .. it's a meat clever - no help, needs some round things - no help, tall miles - no help, some drama - no help .. trade side, in and around the mid/tall $11's, maybe the low low $12's on a good day ........ even in Kalifurnia, the miles and the handshaker will hold this one back ...
Deal got done last night. The owner got 9K on the Acura, and bought a 2005 Infiniti G35 coupe, 6 speed with aero kit. Said he got it for 3% over invoice, so without looking up the numbers, probably ~1K over invoice, 2K off MSRP, +/-.
Sounds like a fair deal all around, and he's happy. Although he did have a little trouble with his first does of Terry speak.
He's even going to let me drive it when he gets it in a few weeks.
You seem to be an expert, so I'd definitely appreciate any advice that you could give to me. I have a gold 1994 Toyota Camry SE with very low milage for it's age. Someone bought it for me 2 years ago from a dealer for $6,000 (it only had 40,000 miles on it). I've put another 20,000 miles on it (so now it's at 60,000 miles), it's been in no accidents, and it's in good physical condition (pretty much the same as it was when I got it). Now that I've got some money saved up, I'm going to be trading it in for a new car. Here are the specs:
1994 Toyota Camry SE, 4-dr Central NJ Gold exterior, beige cloth interior FWD 3.0L V6 DOHC 24V FI Engine 61,000 miles Auto transmission AF/FM/casette radio Power antenna, rear spoiler, cruise control, power windows and door locks, A/C Missing the spare tire Condition is good, no exterior dents or scratches to be repaired
Let me know if you need any more info. Edmunds suggests $3,236...do you think I can reasonably expect that much? I'm wondering if I should expect to do that well, or possible even better (?) because Edmunds' dealer retail is $2000 higher ($5,223) and I don't expect they'll have to do much to prepare the car (probably just clean it and buff up the outside or whatever they do). On the other hand, I'm worried that there's no curb appeal (after all, it's an old car, and the paint job has faded a bit from being out in the sun for 11 years)...so maybe it'll actually be worth much less? I really have no clue here...
I haven't actually received any quotes on this trade-in yet, but I'm hoping to get a good idea of the car's value before I try to negotiate anything...
That happened to my dad earlier this year. He had an early 80s GMC 3/4 ton. 2WD, reg cab 454, looked ok but the tin worm was starting to bite pretty hard. Shabby interior, no stereo. A/C used to work, but let go all at once in a glorious cloud of hissing freon. So basically, we're talking about a 2WD rusty beater that sucks gas like there's no tomorrow. He had an ad in the paper for a long time for $2500 OBO and didn't get a nibble. He put some stickers in the windows of the topper with the price and a phone # and forgot about it. I tried to tell him he was asking way too much, as I would see newer 4x4s with $2-3k asking prices. One day some old timer banged on the door and said he had seen the for sale sign and wanted to look at the truck - this was a couple of years after he had given up actively trying to sell it. Old timer took it for a spin, brought it back, and said, "well, the brakes feel a little soft. Would you take ... $2400?"
Needless to say, the old timer bought himself a truck, and Dad made sure I knew that he was right, and I was wrong...

Full Maintenance Records Other: No wants or warrants...local one owner
ASKING is $8,995 which seems too high even for spectacular condition....my feeling is that "miles are still miles".
I'd like to pay $7,000 but I dont think I'll get that deal....where's the sweet spot Terry, so that if the car doesn't pan out I can bail and come out even or close?
I'm selling my Nissan Sentra XE 2000. Here are the details:
2000 Nissan Sentra XE in excellent condition.
- One owner; - $53,600 miles on it; - Automatic; - A/C; - Blue color.
Asking for $7,000.
Those who are interested in buying all said according to Kelly Blue book, the private party value is around $5,500. However, according to nada.com, the retail value for this car is $7,000. Because it's in excellent condition, I think I should ask for more than the average value of the same type of car.
We're only getting $4000. from our dealer on trade in, which Terry hit on the nose. Could probaly squeek out $4500. if we sold it ourselves, but with the unpainted side view mirror, the 2 scratches on the hood, and the a/c that works 25% of the time, we were happy to get the $4k and be done with it. Also the car has 79,580 miles on it as of tonite. The dealer said they would lower their price for if once we hit 80k miles. Luckily, our new Mazda3 came off the boat yesterday a m and arrived at our dealership early this morning. The test drive went great and we pick that sucker up tomorrow afternoon at 3 p m.
So Terry, you were right on...AGAIN! Thanks for all your help, and hopefully we won't be buying another car for about 4 more years, as my '03 Sentra has just under 22k miles on it, and it's running like a champ. I even replaced the battery today just because I don't want to get stuck with a dead battery. That always happens at the worst possible time. I try to do all my preventative maintenance so I won't have any surprises. I learned that lesson when the 2 girls took the Alty alone for the first time and the battery died. Wife had to take a cab and the place she took it to overcharged her for testing the old battery. They eventually refunded the $25. fee, why would someone test a dead battery in the first place???
The Sandman
(Sorry for my rant here...it's probaly all the pain meds they have me on...lol).
Do Terry a favor and repost all the information in the format you find just above the area where you post.
Things like 2 door/4 door. Extent of the minor dings. Extent of the accident, when, how much damage, who fixed, etc. Does everything work well, ice cold a/c, smooth running, maintenance kept per owners manual.
Then there is the little thing like location, and no zip codes.
Thanks--Here's a revised version with more details:
Hi Terry,
It seems like you're the pro here:
98 Chevy Cavalier 2-Door Purple (Ask the wife..why..ehehe) Mileage: 63K Minor Dings -Only really visible when in bring sunlight Airbag light is on Cassette Automatic /AIr Condiition works well. Manual WIndows.. Accident: yes..--but was all fixed at a body shop
What can I do on a trade in? ANd how about retail? Location: San Francisco, CA Thanks in advance.. KC
Terry, This is for my wife's boss. He has a 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser with all the options and only 7,000 little miles. It is basically in new condition. I think it is that ubiquitous Toyota goldy-tan with tan leather. It is located in Texas. That is where the easy part ends. It is in Texas because in has been held in customs by the EPA for over two years. The vehicle was purchased in Dubai (somewhere in the middle east). It is apparently identical to the US model including emissions equipment. However, the EPA says it some of the computer diagnostic systems differ slightly. Quotes on bringing this vehicle into compliance are right at about $10,000. The EPA gave him one waiver and he used it for his Mercedes SL. They are playing hard ball now and won't consider giving him a second waiver. The questions are: How much is this vehicle worth as it sits? How much is it worth after spending $10,000 to bring it into compliance? What do you do with it? Fix it? Put it on ebay and hope some desert sheik will buy it? Any other ideas?
It sounds like a nice vehicle. He says it even has a "turbocharged" AC to cope with those desert temperatures. He thinks he is going to bite the bullet and spend the $10K. ==================================

I've shipped hundreds of vehicles to the Gulf region, I mean a bunch - for whatever reason they love those Mitsu Montero's and RWD Chevys ... but anyway, this sounds like one of those "hinky" deals .. I've seen few coming this way unless they had a "Political blanket" and it goes back with them ... or if the EPA has held it, that usually means it's a "emission" deal along with the computer system being different than US standards - and sometimes the warranty won't be honored and it becomes a "grey market" then it's worth about 50% of average retail $$ ...... I don't know all the facts here, but get with a Toyota service manger and have him run the vin# - and better yet call Yota "direct" and go from there --- whatever happens, Get It In Writing or someone could be sucking-up alot of $$ for nothing .......
I have a hunch that $9000 is too high for a '95 525i with those miles. I think you said $7K as a possible offer? I bet that is more in the ballpark. I've been looking at E34's & E39's on e-bay (selling prices)--the depreciation is truly frightening--but maybe you can make that work for you. Then there are occasional failures with some bmw auto. trans. as they age....seems to happen between 80K & 120K miles, when it happens.
Just curious how much my TSX would be worth if I traded or did PP ...
2004 Acura TSX 4dr, Auto, Navi 14k mi New tires Carbon Graphite on the outside, black leather on the inside... It's very clean, except for the one door ding on the passenger door, about 1/16 in indent... sniff sniff 503 Portland, OR area...
Would anyone have any personal knowledge or be able to speculate as to how much a stock 2000 white Acura Integra GS-R coupe with 47K miles in good to excellent condition would go for in a trade or private party deal in the Ohio area?
Has he got records up the wazoo, & has a lot of stuff been replaced, like suspension components, which seem to have about a 10 yr. life, max? What about starting him up at $7K while you're waiting for Terry--hopefully he (Terry) won't say that's too high. FWIW, I really like the Oxford Green on the E34's--I think that was the Green on the 95's? Also, have you asked your questions on the E34 board at Roadfly.org? A great resource.
I know it won't be much, but looking to trade in the following vehicle and was wondering what to expect. Edmonds says $3000 to 3400, which I realistically don't expect.
Location: Fresno/Clovis, CA Year/Make/Model: 2000 Dodge Neon Highline Body Style: 4 DR Engine: 4 cyl Driveline: FWD Mileage: 61659 Major Options: Alloy wheels, aftermarket AM/FM CD Player Condition: Normal wear, couple of minor dings, tires are good, brakes are new, has noise in power steering that needs to be addressed. Other: None to my knowledge. Vehicle was purchased used from Dodge dealership 2.5 yrs ago.
Yeah, there's a whole lineage/history of bmw auto trans & which ones are most reliable--the ZF or GM--but sounds like you have a handle on it. The car sounds sweet from what you say. Even at $8K--I don't know the prices like Terry, obviously, but you'd have a beautiful car there for not big $$......
hope all is well... How's the golf game progressing? What do you think about this one:
2000 Lexus Rx300 black exterior w/ beige guts Tennessee Vol country 2WD 72,000 miles Loaded out as the typical Lexus, including heated seats, Nakamichi stereo, moon roof, etc... inside is "fairly clean", no fry invasions of any sort, just the normal wear and tear on a 5 year old car (Leather was starting to crack in a few places, carpet is a little worn on the driver side floor mat). everything works fine. fairly new tires, about 12k miles on them. new brakes within the past 2 weeks now, the outside.... (we've discussed this before) Car has some small scratches here and there, few bumps and bruises, nothing major (the luggage over the hood, could see the scratches but I worked a fair amount of it out)... but w/ the black ext, you can see them all. fair amount of rock chips on the front-end bumper and hood, needs a fair amount of touch-up work done. Paint is glossy as I regularly polished and waxed with Meg 7 and 26. No prior accident history.
...... Sorry .. I had about 1.5 minutes before I had to run out the door - didn't see the V12 part ..l.o.l....
In the land of Aaarnold .....
We have this purty no-sale green 95 525 with tan guts, it's got 111,000 miles, auto ........ nice, super clean "maybe" - outstanding.? .. only if your lookin' at a 05 646Ci convert with 2,700 miles .... if the rubber is super deep, the air is Polar, all the "k" service has been done, the service is from yesterday, no paint by numbers and it looks and feels like 50k .. then a dealer will probably drop the mid/high $3's maybe the low low $4's if it's clean, "might/maybe/it's possible" for a dealer to wander into the badlands of the mid/high $4's, but it better be turn-key, interior looks like an 03, glows in the dark and needs zeeeeroooo (and I do mean -0-) .......
Down Retail Rd.? $8,900..? .... great price if you live in New Guinea .. $7,0/$7,5 is a very fair price and $7,9 is aaaaaall the money in the universe (this one or any other) ......

Morning Butch .... you probably got missed when the lady with the 3 year old $22,000 Plymouth van was posting (..zzzzzzzz..) .... the golf game is coming along preeetty good, thank you .. after 3 months of reading and trying-out new clubs I finally got a new Driver -- Smokin'.!, you'd be blowin' your coffee over your keyboard if you knew where I got it at ..l.o.l....
Anywaaaaay .... in Ten-a-sea, we got this 72k Lexus 2wd RX300, got the Nak, slider, etc .. we got some broken hydes, newer rubber, brand new stoppers, (try a high speed buffer) we have some baby lumps and bumps in the black paint - all in all it sounds like a pretty okay vehicle if the service is 110% ....... if it's "real money" - then $15,000 is strong money from the dealer on the trade-side .. they're stepping hard to get your business ..... what are you trading for.?
Thanks Terry... I thought the $15k was pretty strong. RX was a nice "truck", but a little smaller than what she wanted. Service was close, probably needed the belts changed very soon, but other than that, oil was always changed, tires rotated/balanced, etc...
Wife kept bothering me for a third row, and for the longest time she liked the MDX... ended up buying its close sibling, the Honda Pilot. Very nice truck, impressed with how it drives... I'm pretty good with numbers being an accountant, after adding tax/payoff on old loan, etc.. We came somewhere under invoice on the Pilot (about a $16,8k difference, which includes ttl on a $34,8k msrp). I thought they were bending and working hard for our business....
ps - now you're going to have to spill the source for the new driver... You don't want me to start guessing....?

Pending the outcome of a "bumper-to-bumper" vehicle inspection from a Toyota dealership, I'm looking to buy a '99 SR5 4Runner with 83,000mi. The truck has alloy wheels, sunroof, roof-rack, towing package, V6, auto, A/C, rear heater control, power - windows, doors, mirrors; security alarm to name most things. Seller says it's never been wrecked and is asking $11,250. Just a few things that I saw were a broken glove box, broken rear cup holder and some fading of the wood dash, a couple small places on the seats which I don't know if I can clean up or not - look more like abrasions - not really stains. Does this sound like a good deal if the inspection comes back good and how much to repair the glove box and cupholder? Thanks everyone!!
I'm not a pro, but I bet you could get a whole bunch more selling this privately (aka "retail road"), if it really is that clean, given the low miles. Camrys as used cars tend to get silly money.

Thanks Mr. T, splendid answer. I think the consensus is that $7K for this outstanding car is the absolute line in the sand, pending of course a careful scrutiny of the car and its records.
Personally I wouldn't touch old BMWs unless they are absolutely flawless; other wise..."cheap is never cheap" with an old German car.
Looking at a '93 Lexus LS400 4dr sedan. Has everything, incl aftermarket 10CD changer in trunk. Beige/beige leather. Looks very good for 12 yr old car. Couple minor scratches is all. Tires nearly new Yokos. Runs strong and true. Has 173K on the odo. Pretty much everyhting with a couple minor exceptions works as designed. Owner asking $5500 which is pretty much what KBB says. In Calif bay area.
Would be using as wife and teenage daughters 'round town vehicle. I figure old Lexus should still be fairly reliable??? Owner recently did brakes, has receipts for lots of oil changes (says 3-4K was norm. He is 2nd owner, bought from his brother). Timing belt replaced at about 125K. Body looks great - never an accident is his claim and looks to be true.
ANyone know of particulars I should consider with this vehicle? Anyone think price is right?
Comments
Hey now, easy on those comments. I haven't hit ANYTHING.........well, not since the mailman back in 1994.
Oh and I haven't BOUGHT a new car in 8 months........Zippy will be a year old in 3 weeks.......only has 39k on her right now.
... this is for "real-world" stuff, so I'm reporting.
Friends of ours had this car for sale for some time:
99 G Cherokee (non-limited) 75k miles
Red, 4x4 (dunno which kind), cloth
Clean, non-smoker, one owner, maintained, etc.

I'm so grateful to my charming wife who told me in no uncertain terms to NOT to give them advice.
Which would have been, it's a $7 car real money and that they should try a quick $7,900 to get it done, and maybe ask $8,500.
The wife is ALWAYS right.

Terry.

1994 Toyota Camry SE, 4-dr
Central NJ
Gold exterior, beige cloth interior
FWD
3.0L V6 DOHC 24V FI Engine
61,000 miles
Auto transmission
AF/FM/casette radio
Power antenna, rear spoiler, cruise control, power windows and door locks, A/C
Missing the spare tire
Condition is good, no exterior dents or scratches to be repaired
Thanks!
Steve
Needless to say, the old timer bought himself a truck, and Dad made sure I knew that he was right, and I was wrong...

- One owner;
- $53,600 miles on it;
- Automatic;
- A/C;
- Blue color.
Asking for $7,000.
Those who are interested in buying all said according to Kelly Blue book,
the private party value is around $5,500. However, according to nada.com,
the retail value for this car is $7,000. Because it's in excellent condition,
I think I should ask for more than the average value of the same
type of car.
I want to be fair and reasonable. Any input on a reasonable price? If you
want to see photos of the car, please go to http://post.craigslist.org/manage/81792714/kckz6.
Would really appreciate your advice!

Things like 2 door/4 door. Extent of the minor dings. Extent of the accident, when, how much damage, who fixed, etc. Does everything work well, ice cold a/c, smooth running, maintenance kept per owners manual.
Then there is the little thing like location, and no zip codes.

This is for my wife's boss.
The questions are:
How much is this vehicle worth as it sits?
How much is it worth after spending $10,000 to bring it into compliance?
What do you do with it? Fix it? Put it on ebay and hope some desert sheik will buy it? Any other ideas?
It sounds like a nice vehicle. He says it even has a "turbocharged" AC to cope with those desert temperatures. He thinks he is going to bite the bullet and spend the $10K.

I gotta go ................... let me know.!

WHAT GM transmission? It's a ZF.
But I wouldn't mind a GM transmission at all, as long as the Germans assembled it.
Nah, $7K isn't going to happen I don't think...but I'll ask WTH.
Of course, the fact that it is at the local Red Cross donations resale lot might give some people pause, but a running 5 series for 2.5K?

Terry,
hope all is well... How's the golf game progressing? What do you think about this one:
2000 Lexus Rx300
black exterior w/ beige guts
Tennessee Vol country
2WD
72,000 miles
Loaded out as the typical Lexus, including heated seats, Nakamichi stereo, moon roof, etc... inside is "fairly clean", no fry invasions of any sort, just the normal wear and tear on a 5 year old car (Leather was starting to crack in a few places, carpet is a little worn on the driver side floor mat). everything works fine.
fairly new tires, about 12k miles on them.
new brakes within the past 2 weeks
now, the outside....
No prior accident history.
was allowed a legitimate $15,000 on the trade...

Terry.

Am jsjdio erbeb 99 veuwe ...... ooop's let me slow down, I'm missing all the keys ...... in Tucson we have a 99 Silhouette (probably a Ext GL.?) hopefully dual breeze, color is faded but okay for the Tucson area, 72k, level control .. not much of description .. but with the faded paint, no hydes, cold breeze and the rubber being ok ... then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $3's, maybe the low low $4's .. if it's a GLS, then maybe the mid/high $4's, maybe the low low low $5's - big maybe ...........

Personally I wouldn't touch old BMWs unless they are absolutely flawless; other wise..."cheap is never cheap" with an old German car.
TIA
George
