....... Not knowing what area your from and "if" you have some patience .. I would be looking in Yankee country after the snow flies .. RWD anythings don't do well after the first blizzard up north and I'm sure there will be quite a few dealers that will sell one for less than MSRP ......

MSO: Manufacturers Statement of Origin -- it's the birth certificate of the vehicle before the dealer turns it into a title after the first sale.

Good luck and let me know .......

.. **but my 4 month old '05 Mustang GT, with 3K miles on the odo had an offer of $28K from a Toyota dealer. I paid $25,500 this past winter for it (X plan). That $28K number is the MSRP. Don't know if that's a good reference point, but it gives you an idea of how crazy that market is.** ...

That's a pretty safe reference point right now ... $28,0 from a Yota dealer doesn't surprise me, he could either run it off to the auction and get $29/$30,0 depending on the day and barometric pressure or sell off the lot and get get get, well whatever he gets ..l.o.l... the first one I bought I paid more than you at $27,5 but sold it 72 hrs later for $29,9 .... I've seen Ford, Lexus even Benz dealers step up and pay some stupid money for the pre-owned, so they must be selling .........

What I don't understand is why are there so many used '05 Mustangs out htere? I am guessing people are buying on the Sexyness of the ride, but then finding them impractical?

I like the mustangs a lot. I have had two V6's as rentals and was imopressed. I would not buy one because it is totally impractal for me (car seat for toddle issues). Plus, My Subaru Forester outhandles it.

I know it's headed for auction - I just don't want to be too shocked when I get the trade in number.

Also, with the new donation laws, if I donate a working vehicle that the charity goes to a deserving family, how do you determine the value?

Also, with the new donation laws, if I donate a working vehicle that the charity goes to a deserving family, how do you determine the value?

I'll chime in on this - the charity will send you a receipt for what they sold it for. That is the value of the donation.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,751
Well, if folks are selling them for more than they paid, i can DEFINITELY see there being alot of used ones running around.

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

I understand that if the charity SELLS it - I get the actual sold value as a deduction.

But about 5 years ago, I donated a decent and running vehicle and they said they would be GIVING it to a needy family.

If they give it away today, since the 96 minivan is a decent vehicle for a needy family, how is the value accessed?

If they transfer the title for, say $10, surely the donator gets more than a $10 deduction.

Read this article in the Detroit News about declining SUV resale. Their poster boy for the article is trying to sell his '93 Yukon. Check out how much this Einstein wants for it:

    http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosinsider/0507/11/A01-243409.htm

If I ask $20K for my '02 Maxima and don't sell it, does that mean that mid-size sedan resale is going down, lol? ;)

Also, with the new donation laws, if I donate a working vehicle that the charity goes to a deserving family, how do you determine the value?

The value of that vehicle is somewhere south of $1k.

Used vehicle contributions have been noted as an area of abuse for years. Therefore, by claiming this deduction, you are making an audit of your returns more likely.

Is it really worth it? I don't think so.

    Thanks Terry,
You are wonderful. Great information. Taking your information into account and contacted BMW of North America to double check whether it had been a DEMO or not. They confirmed it that It was driven as Dealer Demo for 11k miles before registering. They provide this info in written. Also BMW of North America issued a letter that it was fully covered in Warranty and its been CPO.
Carf*x didn't mention any thing about auction acitivity. No information on registered or titled before 11k miles. It was first registered in California on 11.5k miles as a personal vehicle.
With your Price in mind I went to the dealer and started bargaining by putting the Demo issue top the line, I started with 29k, after 6 days of negotiation he came down to 30k and offered me new Floor mats, Original BMW Key chains for all three keys. Finally including tax, title and all it came to 32k. I am happy. It runs good and its been a 3 days I am enjoying the ride. Without your information it never been possible. You are great.

    Thanks a Million

    Hi Terry,

I would like to get your insight into how much I could sell my car for.

Honda 2004 Accord EX V6 4 Dr Sedan
    Automatic Transmission
    Leather
    Navigation, XM Satellite Radio
    White exterior, Tan interior
    15,200 miles
Fully loaded, excellent conditon, no accident, non smoking, no animals

What would be the retail and wholesale prices?

If I sell to a dealer, is there any risk that he will not pay off my loan as promised?

    Thank you

to invest the $50,000 rebate that Maybach is offering?

Should I buy 2 Mustang GTs and flip them for a profit? Boats? Real estate? Diamonds?

Probably I should buy many Maybachs so I get many giant rebates.

I await your input, honored car specialist.

    Hi Terry,

I'm trying to choose between two used Devilles. One is a 99 and the other a 96. Here are the specs:

    1999 Deville Concours
    4dr
    4.6L Northstar 300HP
    83,000 miles
    White/Beige leather
    Moon roof
    Newer tires
    Asking $7800 neg.

    1996 Deville
    4dr
    4.6L 275HP Northstar
    49,000 miles
    Silver/Gray leather
    New tires
    Asking $5500 firm

What do you estimate as the trade in values for each? My goal is to buy one of these cars, drive for a couple years max, then sell and get a minivan. Which one will give me the best value assuming I drive 20k miles per year? Which one is the "better deal"

    Thanks so much!

Not the truck, just finding the right price for the vehicle. I'm looking at a 2005 Chevy Colorado Z85 Base trim, 4 cyl, red, auto tranny, value appearance package which is essentially upgraded alloy wheels and better tires, like new condition, on a dealer's lot and only 2600 miles in Daytona Beach, Florida.
    .
The funniest part is the dealer's asking price on their website is $16500. GM employee price for an identical new one is $14200, they asked if I'd take it for $13500.
    .
    What's a reasonable retail price.....???

Other: dealer got from auction and the car lived its life in NJ (I suspected such by the slightly rusted exterior of the exhaust system and slight surface rust on some of the undercarriage bolt heads). Now for the odd part. The car is offered as a CPO, BUT the title check showed that the original lease title had an "exceeds mechanical limits" title in NJ! Could this just have been a documentation error?
Here is the VIN#, 1HGCG22512A006708. What do you think the dealer has in it?
    Should I pass or ?

Blah, figures I'd forget something. It's an auto.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
My amateur opinion is that "some" dealers will Certify almost anything. I once almost bought a CPO'd bmw from an individual (who bought it CPO from a bmw dealer). Turned out the guy actually had a lawsuit going with bmw because of major pre-existing body or paint damage that wasn't divulged to him by the dealer.....

a question for you. i contacted my local ford dealer who has 2 identical '04 eb expy's on the lot. perfect equipment for what i am looking for. requested a quote through their web site. internet sales manager got back to me and quoted 10k off list on the expedition, and payoff on my '02 eb explorer. i owe a bit over 13k. i did request a payment of around $500. what did i do wrong? since 1990, i have bought 8 vehicles from them. 4 explorers, 2 sho's, an expedition xlt and a focus zts.

    <<<<what did i do wrong?>>>>

    .......huh?

Why don't you tell us what happened? You wanted to buy a new car, you had a trade in.... Are you driving the new car or your old car?

This is like a giant puzzle... why don't you tell Terry a bit about your '02 so he can correctly appraise that vehicle... Can we assume you are talking a new '04? or used '04? If used, you'll need to drop a lot more info... see below on what is needed.

Payment around $500... are you talking 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 year loan. You can make your payment whatever you want....??

    Its all in the details......

    Hey Terry!

"The 03 ES Tribute is an 2wd .. no 4x4, 53k, the color is no help in Dallas, we have the slider, some auto action and we can see the air in the tires .. trade side, in and around the tall $12's, maybe the low low low low $13's ....... the 03 "6" is low in miles, we got that meat clever thing going on, good color for the area, side balloons and we have a $500 kiss .... sounds like the super high $11's, maybe the low low $12's on a good day"

Last month you gave me the numbers above on my vehicles. I think you misread the year of my tribute as it was a 2002 not 2003. The GM dealer offered 11 for the Mazda6. Carmax offered 12 for the Mazda6. The Ford dealer offered 11.5 on both. I got 12.6 for the Mazda6 and 12 for the Tribute, what I asked for. Hope I shouldn't have asked for 13 on the Tribute.

    Thanks for all your help,
    Fabian... :D

I'm thinking about trading in My 2000 Audi A4. Details of the car
145,000 miles; 1.8 Turbo; Silver; 4dr Sedan, Quattro, 5 Speed; Heated Seats; Ski Sac; Sunroof; Homelink; Auto Dimmining mirrors; Sideguard airbags. Recent break job with good tires. I would say overall condition is good. Needs new windshield some minor bumps and bruises. Clean title. Went to a dealer and they offered me 5,100. Edmunds trade in value is 8,500. NADA trade invalue 8,100. KBB trade in value 6,700. What is a fair trade in value. Area central CA at an Audi dealer. Thanks for the help!
  • basscadetbasscadet Member Posts: 146
Whichever one you end up buying, make sure you get an extended warranty for it. You'll need it. ;)
  • basscadetbasscadet Member Posts: 146
KBB, Edmunds, and NADA do not cut checks for cars. They're only guidelines.

$5,100 sounds a little low, but you have to bear in mind that Audi/Volkswagens are EXTREMELY expensive to recondition for sale on a used car lot. I honestly would not trade this car in at all, I'd sell it on your own.
  • basscadetbasscadet Member Posts: 146
Certified cars are a joke. Dealerships blow maybe $500 reconditioning the vehicle and turn around and sell them for a $2000+ premium. What does the consumer get out of it? A (very) limited 100,000 mile powertrain warranty? Big whoop. Very, very few cars have powertrain problems in the first 100,000 miles these days.

You are MUCH better off using that $2000 to buy a named-exclusion extended warranty from a big, reputable company like GE. Or go to Carmax and buy one of their cars with their warranty.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... If the Tribute is a 02, then you got aaaaaaaaall the money at $12,0 - and then some .. obviously the dealer worked hard to get your business, so enjoy the new car ...

    Thanks for the update ...

    Terry,
You're right when you say these are nice drivers. The wife really loves the car, eventhough she really wants the new Jetta. She decided to wait till the '06's or even the '07's are out to get the Jetta. She would give me the 3 and we'd probaly give my '03 Sentra to my oldest, as she will be graduating F A U in Boca Raton by then.
Eventhough I'm due for the next new car, I could live with this. She prefers the Jetta L with the leatherette seating surfaces. Time will tell.
Again, my thanks for your help on the Mazda 3 S. It's awesome!

Nah, the new rubber i had on the TSX was due to all the road construction in the area, ran over a razor, and the darned thing went flat on the highway. fortunately, the rim wasn't damaged, but i did run it flat, and the sidewalls were toast. running on the doughnut, found another tire with 2 nails in it. said #%$#$%#$%$#% and went to the tire shop... =P

On a Caddy or Volvo we may spend $500 to "recondition", but the actual certified warranty costs $1,000 - $1,200. A "GE" or Carmax warranty is more reputable than Caddy or Volvo extending the "bumper to bumper" warranty to 6 yr/100,000 miles?????????

Terry, Thanks for the reply. We'll probably go for the quick sale on that one.

But, now I need to ask one more favor. My daughter may be negotiating tonight on a new (to her) car. The particulars are:

'03 Pontiac Vibe GT, 4-cyl, 18K miles, 6-spd, silver w/black cloth, pwr sunroof, all power options, the car is located at a pre-owned dealer in NH who sells mostly high-line vehicles, he is asking $12.5K. How much do you think he has in it and what would be a fair offer?

    ======================================
"" **Now there's a target rich golf environment** ...l..o..l.... you got that right, you know that's happening when 15 year old caddys are wearing Rolex's .. I played at Hyannis and Pinehills, nice courses - snobby people ...... ""

    ======================================
LOL...Yeah, but did you ever notice how tough it is to hit a golf ball with your snoot in the air

Try Dennis Pines next time, may be the best on the Cape and less snob appeal... btw, I've never tried a hybrid.

I'll let you know how the "deal" goes.... thanks.

Please let me know what you think I could get as a trade in on this car. Also do you think I should try to sell the car myself? I think it may be difficult for me to try to sell because the car is in need of several mechanical repairs. (brakes, ATF leak, oil leak, broken strut, ABS light on)

    Year: 1992 BMW 325 IC
    Body Stayle: Convertable

    Driveline: RWD
    Mileage: 92000
    Color: Black on Black

Condition: Interior in excellent condition exterior has a couple of door dings. Rear tires have about 2000 miles will need front in about 5000.

I'm also a fan of CPO vehicles, if only for the warranty--if--the vehicle checks out. It's still buyer beware to some extent, IMO, partly because (to my knowledge) none of the CPO warranties cover previous body or paint damage, or guarantee there hasn't been any--at least the bmw CPO program doesn't.

Kind of a "project car", as is. You could try the Roundel, or one of the bmw websites, if you want to sell it yourself--I dunno, "start at" $2995??? $3795?? You might get 1/2 that?, given the condition, but probably a lot more than a dealer will pay. Despite all the bad news, it is a low mileage Convertible, 6 cyl, low-ish miles, & it's summer. And maybe spend $50-$75 for a diagnosis from a reputable indie bmw shop, & make copies for prospective buyers. With that, & lots of pics, you could put it on fee-bay, start at $995, w/no reserve? Some do-it-yourself bmw nut might be all over it, at the right price.

Ok, well now that GE is out of that business, whoever offers premium ($$$) warranties, not these fly-by-night warranties offered by most dealerships that aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

Dan, the car in question is a Honda Accord. Certified Hondas do not offer bumper to bumper extended warranties, they are powertrain only.

    Please research first before correcting.
