A friend of mine traded in a year old WRX with about 5K miles to a dealer for $19K. It was loaded up with the 17" rims the Subie dealers charge $3K for (!), short shifter, I dunno what all. Anyway, 63K miles is a lotta miles for an '03, esp. for a car like this, & I'm assuming no warranty? I'd say pay more if you have to for a lower mileage one with warranty. There always seem to be a lot of these for sale.....many with short miles.

Looking for a trade in value for this truck. It has the 7.3L Diesel with automatic transmission and is in Houston and will be traded there. It has 58,300 Miles on it. It has very clean interior. The exterior is in very good shape and the paint shines, there is one ding on the roof and one in the front bumper. It has never been in an accident nor has it had any body work. An estimate for repair of the items I listed above is about $700. I see the asking prices on auto trader for same or similar trucks in this area between 23K and 28K. It runs like new and has been maintained regularly.

    Thanks for the help,

Sounds like the right $$, it's a Protege' with tall miles ... that's about $1,000 back of rough book .. all in all, I think you did pretty darn good.!

Enjoy your new vehicle .................. ;)

    Hi Terry, Hope you're well.

Aren't the dog dancing championships coming up soon?

While we're waiting for that, could you give me numbers on the following, as at least one of them has to go.

I know, before the lecture, they're black and in Atlanta.

I also know this is the home of Delta Air Lines, and that I should know better than to put 65K miles on a car in 18 months.

    Doesn't mean I won't do it again.

#1 1999 Ford Expedition XLT, 2WD, Black w/Tan guts, no moonroof, but all other Eddie Bauer Options (leather, 6 CD, 3rd row seating, power pedals). 4.6L engine recently rebuilt. 85K total miles. Interior lost the invasion of the french fries. Exterior O.K. (except that it's black).

#2 2004 Chevy Tahoe LT, 2WD, Black w/Tan guts, Moonroof, XM, DVD player, Rear Captains, 3rd Row seats, Side airbags, 6 CD. Loaded. 65K fun filled miles. Pretty good condition for miles.

I know the market's cold for these, but how bad is it?

Allen....... it would be a WHOLE lot easier for you to repost your message in the format located just above where you post at the bottom of this forum.

You don't mention the color or if it has leather or bedliner or cruise or power locks---- who can memorize the XLT package? How are the tires? New?

Just trying to help you get a response from Terry.

What is the current average buying price for a Land Rover Discovery II SE7 (1999) from a dealership?

    City: Twin Falls, Idaho (83301)
    Land Rover Discovery II SE7
    Automatic
    63K Miles
    Orange Mettalic
Cracked on top of the rear bumper. (Very awkward damage for a Land Rover)

anyone know if $14,995 would be an acceptable price for this Land Rover
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
I'm guessing that's a great price for the dealer, & a lousey price for you. LR's have terrible resale value & reliability--my hunch is around $11K-ish is more like it. Oh, but then there's the bumper damage.....& see if you can get a warranty if you buy this thing, you'll probably need it, often.

Thank you so much for the reply. I may be able to haggle it down to $12,000, but it does have a ton of extra options. What is the best extended warranty avaible for Land Rovers. THANK YOU for the help so far!

I asked you in May (with a nice reply from you), but couldn't pull the trigger (which I should have.) IMHO, May was the best time this year to buy a Tahoe. . . 5k rebate and a $1000 GMCard premium over and above my maxed out GMCard earnings. Nevertheless, I'm sniffing around for an '06 LT.

    Lubbock, Texas
04 Tahoe LS 2WD (ISK pkg)
    Summit White with grey cloth
    12k miles
    5.3 engine
    3rd row (two seats)
    garage door opener
    power pedals
    bucket seats
    bose
    6 disc changer
    trip computer w/steering wheel controls
    trailering pkg
    wheel flares
zero dents, dings, paint, and still smells new

You suggested $23k trade in May. Where are we now?
    Thanks.

Well, this was the first year of the Disco II, which was supposedly even more unreliable than later years (talking about the "most unreliable year" for a LR is like........I can't even think of a good analogy). It does have low miles tho, & I remember that orange color. Does the dealer sell any ext. warranties, & can you get them to "include it" at the $12K? (huge mark-up on ext. warranties sometimes.) And fix the bumper? There can't be a huge demand for these, even normally, let alone with oil at $67 a bbl.

Last thing: don't do it! Buy a '99 4Runner instead. And do a "repost for Terry" with all the vehicle info if you want a really expert opinion. Good luck,

Please let me know if this is a good deal? From a private party:

    2003 BMW Z4 3.0 Manual
    ~20K miles
    Black exterior, red interior
Base car with no options (manual soft-top)

Asking price is "atleast" 27K. What do you think? What range would be a good deal on this vehicle?
    Thanks

be careful with cars in the south in the coming months. We got slammed pretty hard in the New Orleans and gulf coasts today. Thousands of flooded cars.
  • rszantorszanto Member Posts: 10
I am not sure if the dealer sells ext. warranties, but I have heard mixed reviews about the 99' Disco II. I guess it all depends on if I get a "good" or "bad" Land Rover. I'll do a carfax report soon, and I think that will be a very important factor on whether or not I buy the SUV. I'm hoping it comes out good because I have always loved Land Rovers and have always wanted to own one.

By the way, here's the repost to see what Terry has to say about the deal.

Hope you survived Katrina safe and sound. We lost power down here in Ft. Lauderdale for about 18 hours or so...we were lucky!
Being a Tulane Green Wave, I really loved living in N'Orleans but I do remember when a hurricane was approaching back in 1973 or 1974 and we were all encouraged to take our cars downtown to a parking garage to avoid any flooding, as the city is below sea level. Lucky for us, the storm went another way and just dumped torrential rains for awhile.
Stay well and our prayers are with y'all on the Gulf Coast and Louisiana !

Does anyone here on the boards have access to the VIN history reports? I am hesistant to get one from carfax because they dont supply maintnance records, but only accident reports. If not, that's fine because I can just take the dive with carfax and call it good.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,270
A Carfax will show maintenance records, if it was done at a shop that reports to Carfax. I think most dealers report.

1.) Just under 180,000 miles (probably will have at least that many maybe a few more when I go to buy).
    2.) Cracked windshield.
3.) Air conditioning has gone out along with the first two fan settings.
4.) Radio works but clock display is gone and cassette player is non functional.
5.) Paint is still glossy with the exception of a small area on the upper corner of both doors.
6.) Regular maintenance has been kept up.
    7.) Custom alloys - 16"; tires about 50% worn.
8.) Water pump replaced in February.
    9.) Battery one year old.
10.) Brakes still in good condition.

Mechanically this car has been very solid. A seal which was fixed when the car was a couple years old and the water pump replacement have been the only major repairs.

Are any of the problems mentioned above worth fixing before trading should I decide to do so or would it be best to just go "as is"?
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
No dealer will want to take that car in trade ... way too many miles and in not so great condition.

You would do better to put a big "For Sale" sign in the front window and park the car in front of a laundromat or a temp agency and take the first $500 cash you are offered.

Considering trying to get out of my lease a few months early and get something a little bigger that will fit the kids so we don't have to drive the Valdez (wife's Ford Expedition) everywhere. Tried last week for a value on a 01 Golf, but it got buried, I'll try again:

    Evansville, IN
    2001 VW Golf GL
    2 door
    2.0L 4 Cyl Manual
    47,000
    Dark Blue / Tan Interior
Options: Tint, CD Head Unit that matches VW dash lights or can put original tape deck back in, VW 15" Alloys Instead of Steelies or can put steelies back on
Exterior and Interior are Good. Few minor marks from life, but no trips to the body shop
    Tires are 50%
    Brakes are 50% or better
    Full Maintenance Records

This is the basic Golf, no cruise, no power windows etc. Paint is still has a good shine, interior just needs a vacuum and a shine. No trips to the body shop, no burger wrappers on the floor etc. Good clean little car. I know the 5spd doesn't help, but it's got low mileage at least. Thinking if someone will get me out of lease for even money I might jump on the deals, otherwise I'll wait till Bank One comes to take it away in the winter.

Want to trade in SLK 230 , 2001 model, maroon color with auto transmission and 6-cd changer. The car has 56,200 miles on it. Location is Boston, MA. Car is still under starmark warranty until Dec 2005. Very clean, just a few minor scratches, brand new tires and brakes.

Anyone know why a vehicle would have salvage title if it was stolen and recovered? Person selling says that car recovered fine, but why would it change title to reflect salvage???? He says it is theft salvage. Anyone heard of this?
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
If you take it to any dealer for trade, they are going to show something for it, but in reality you will be paying them to take it from you.

Your best bet is to drive it to a salvage yard with title in hand and get a cash buy offer. Too many miles and a cracked windshield makes it unsafe at any speed, it won't pass any safety inspection as it sits.

If you can find someone willing to offer a hundred or two for it cash, take it.
  • skyyvskyyv Member Posts: 13
    Interesting replies.

I've actually had two people already offer me $1500 for it so I was curious to see what people would say here. Often times when people see it they are shocked it has as many miles (mostly highway) on it because it looks/runs better than many of the Sunfires they have seen with half the mileage. Not to mention the alloys alone are worth about $500.

Personally, I'm sort of reluctant to give it up. It looks practically brand new unless you get right up next to it where you can see the minor dings/chips, small paint defect on the doors, and the hairline crack in the windshield. The inside looks practically brand new too. It also still drives/runs really well and I think if taken care of, it could easy go another 100,000 miles with little trouble. Hell, I've seen worse cars sitting and driven off used lots which were being sold for nearly $3000.

When I bought this car, I traded in a used Chevy Sprint my parents had purchased for me a year or so before which was in worse condition than my Sunfire (over 100,000 miles, one speaker, air was non functional, faded paint, and ran like a dog with no legs). The dealership not only gave me a very good deal on the Sunfire, they also were willing to give me $600 for the Sprint.

If it was really $1500 cash real money in hand, you should have taken it and ran to the bank.

First and most important, thanks for the reminder and plug for the Red Cross. I spend a lot of time along the Gulf Coast (one reason I have 65k miles on a car in 18 months), and most parts are not wealthy regions. There are a lot of people in need.

Made my contribution in honor of "Ambassador Terry Tee". Thanks for all the service you provide here.

And thanks for the numbers on my BLACK SUVs. About what I expected. Time to start drinking heavily again...(which I probably how I ended up with two black SUVs in the first place).
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
What he's saying may, or may not be true, but the salvage title reduces the value of the vehicle drastically--by 70-80% I'm guessing. You could try to call your local DMV & find out about about diff. kinds of salvage titles(?), but that won't change the low value of the car.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... Salvage title means it was stolen and stripped by at least 80% ..... it's not worth a whole lot to a dealer, thats why he's selling it ---- can we spell: PASS ....
