I would try parking it in a good visible location after a good bath and vacuum job. Put a price of $1,900 obo in the windshield and the actual gas mileage you get along with a phone number that you will answer.

The bad: paint on roof is sunburned (could be just clearcoat, but it's kind of a hazy fading, like frost), not horrible, but you can't miss it. Driver's window is a bit slow going up, power locks sometimes need a bit of help, power antenna moody, factory alarm doesn't work, basically normal stuff for a ten-plus year-old car. Front airdam a bit scuffed. Also, had a fairly major ($4500) accident about four years ago, don't know if it's on CarSmack but I suspect it is, repaired nicely. I can't tell, but I'm no expert.
The good: A/C and heat are fine. Still has nice factory alloys, decent leather interior (no rips, a bit of fade, it sits outside in Chicago). No modifications, one older female owner and the low miles, obviously. Within the last six months, she's had new tires, brakes, belts, hoses, filters, fluids flushed and other service to the tune of $1200, so it's ready to go.
I know the low miles can be a bonus, but this thing is still 11 years old and not glowing perfect. Do you think a Honda dealer will even take this as a trade (probably on an '06 Civic when they hit the showrooms)? If so, what do you think they'll offer? Just checked AutoTrader.com, the cheapest '95 Integra around here is $4800 (which I think is nuts), it's identical but has 105k miles. Don't want to be greedy, but don't want to take a lowball just for ease; I figure I can help her sell it privately and maybe even score a small commission for my efforts, especially if I make her $1-2k over trade. I'm just guessing the dealer will offer $2-25 but we can probably get $4k private in a heartbeat. What say you? Thanks!
So I stopped by my Toyota dealer to look at some vehicles last night and I asked them to give me a trade-in value for my truck. The guy I spoke to was kind of a jerk so I am not sure if he was really trying to lo-ball me. He said that they would give me $14,000 for my 2005 Sport Trac! I could not believe this. The sticker price for this vehicle was like $24,000. That is $10,000 depreciation in less than a year. Could this be accurate?

Then that's $6K depreciation, not $10K, in a year--huge difference. Not surpricing that a domestic $20K vehicle would drop that much in a year (I'm not saying that's a fair trade-in offer tho, because I don't know; just that it doesn't sound surprising). Trading in one-y.o. vehicles can get very expensive.

I am the original owner. Non-smoker. No children. I walk to work, I drive less than 6000 miles a year. I also have 6 months left on the 7 year/50,000 mile $0 deductible extended warranty I purchased. The KBB trade-in price said approx $4100, the KBB retail price close to $8900, and the private sale price $6560.
What could I expect from a dealer, and from a private sale?
FWIW, my 2005 Scion tC (bought new 7/04, about 9,200 miles) has, per Terry, depreciated between $2,000 - $2,500, and that is as a trade in. Forst quote I got was about $3,500 below what I paid

As the previous posted mentioned, it's what you paid rather than the MSRP that counts. And, trading in a year old car, in this case a 2005, is a sure thing for a financial bloodbath regardless of the marque.
Last year when I was between jobs for the first time in my life, I sold cars at a local new car dealer. It was the best experience of my life. I think everyone should sell cars for a living, simply for the experience. It should be mandatory for "Life 101." I assure you, it's not only the salesperson who can be a jerk! More often than not, it can be the customer.
Even prior to working at the dealership, I never traded in a car. I always sell them via the newspaper, etc. myself. A hassle, yes, but the time spent is well worth the money. As everyone who reads this board knows, there is a difference between ACV for a trade vs. the "shown" value. There is no free lunch.
I would much rather walk into a dealership without a trade. Negotiations are much simpler and straightforward.
Just pondering the possibility of getting a new Pilot in exchange.

Good care taken, but regularly driven. Normally garaged. No rips or tears in the interior, but some general wear though, it has 80K. Exterior is dingless and scratchless, but there are a few small rock chips on the front. Paint is shiny and nice. I've ridden in it enough to know that it feels tight and drives very nicely. Clear rear window. No accidents or repaints that I know of. Tires - are only about 10K old, but that's about half-way gone for a car like this. Brakes - about 15K old Maintenance - dealer maintained. All services performed on schedule (although the 90K will be due shortly), all records in hand.
He really doesn't want to sell. He could manage well enough when he only had one child, but now with number two due in short order, it's a much more difficult proposition.

Has 29,000 miles - getting ready to need tires and rear brakes. Nice cosmetic condition, clean outside and inside, non smoker. Original paint, no body work.
Located in Upstate NY - he is thinking about trading rather than putting brakes and tires, but no real urgency, it looks and drives like a pretty nice truck.

Though, I have been able to avoid door dings by parking way off in "no mans land."

Whatta ya mean you added a huge power moonroof .....? .. did your head start spinnin' around during the exorcism and it ripped a hole in it ....? ... it will all depend on the manufacturer, the finish work, the warranty - and the attitude of the dealer .. some dealers (like me) don't get too excited with aftermarkets, plus the miles are kinda stiff .....
If it's a pretty nice one (it needs some rubber) .. no volleyball teams in the backseats, no paint by numbers, no I backed over the Salvation Army collection guy last Xmas ..... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $19's, might maybe get a dealer to wander towards the tall $19's .. it's all going to depend on the slider and the round things ............

Perhaps the sticking point is the pricey options, but if a similarly configured 2006 right now gives a sticker price over $48,000, could the one-year old vehicle really be worth only $34,000?...**
$35,000...? ...2005 XC90 2.5 AWD - 16750 miles ...... if you got $35,000 "real money" in Charlotte ~ I would be doing hand flips and barking at the moon in polka-dot pajama's ........ the miles are stiff and it's a 2.5 ...... I gotta a funny feelin' there was alot of "overallowance" being shown here ... dealers are barely paying $35ish for the 05 V8's and T6's with itty bitty miles ......
The "regularily scheduled oil changes" make no difference since you had to replace with a used engine. Who knows what condition the used engine is in?
Sounds like a $5,900 ASKING at private party to me and send it packing with any offer near $5,000. Trade side possibly near $3,500 if the planets are lined up right. Given the engine, tie rod and bearing repairs, my gut tells me it just has not had an easy life. In any case you will have to disclose the major engine replacement and it may really kill your trade in value with a 'used' engine.

How much "stuff" does your baby have? People used to move entire households/families 3000 miles in a Covered Wagon. And now 1 Baby w/stuff can't fit into an X3???
My grandparents also used to shove their family of 7 into a Nash Rambler, with no seat belts or car seats in sight. Try that today and you go to jail. I have 2 kids, ages 1 and 3, and we went from a small SUV to a minivan when #2 came along because we were getting a bit cramped for visits to Grandma's. Playpens, strollers, diaper bags, etc. I've never been inside an X3 but I know it's smaller than an X5, which is pretty cramped for what's allegedly a midsize SUV.

Jason, surprisingly, the X3 is not that small. I was in a car showroom where they sell many brands. I opened the door of a BMW X3 and sat in the drivers seat.... I really thought I had gotten into the X5. I was shocked to see that it felt as big as an X5.
My friend who works at "this" dealership as a service advisor for Infiniti said the X3 has as much space as the X5. Even if he is exaggerating, it sure is mighty close.

Finally am pulling the trigger on trading the car. Dealer offered me $6,0000 trade - the cooling system is starting to act a little squirrely. You were right in the ball park. Sales manager test drove the car, then looked up the auction prices, and gave me the number.
What I am buying is:
2002 Mercury Grand Marquis LSE Mercury Certified Used Car 4.6 liter V-8; 3.27 rear end gears, dual exhaust, rear air suspension silver with light gray leather - bucket seats and floor shifter 40,500 miles off a one owner lease Cassette, no CD player, but steering wheel controls for radio and autoclimate. MIGHT be prewired for trunk CD, but forgot to check.
Dealer had it for sale for $13,995 - marked it down to $11,995 since this dealership's customers tend to have one foot in the grave, and they don't like the bucket seats, and another model year about to turn over.
With $6,000 trade on the Dodge, what is a fair retail price on this car? Hard to find comparable numbers on an LSE.
I'm also selling my 1994 Grand Marquis - if this 2002 GM is as solid, I'm good for another 100,000 miles. I love my old Grand Marquis, but I don't think the wife will let me have two of them at the same time.
You'd actually be surprised how much space a rear facing baby seat takes. with the baby seat in the back my wifes knees hit the front dash (she's 5'6" not a giant). Also the rear cargo area barely fits the stroller. All in all a great little SUV with car like handling and the 3.0 is peppy.....just dont get one with a growing family unless you strap the kids to the roof rack.
The dealer might have paid the low/mid $10's if it was really nice and it needed -0- when he got it, but I'm sure he put a few nickels into it .... it might hit the table in the tall $10's ....... $11,990...? .. he ain't trying to get rich .. maybe figure your $6,000 trade and a $5,500/$5,900 "difference" - plus the taxes and flea's .....
Thinking about trading in this one. Found out that babies have A LOT more stuff than you can fit into the small SUV's.

04 Bimmer X3 with 11k .... no CPO ...? .... we got the Mr. Universe roof, good color for the area, loooooooow miles, Prem pack, bun warmers, sport and a set of blinders .......... if this little dudette is clean to the bone, no Dutch Boys, seats been hovered-in and a puuuurfect history .... then the dealer will probably dropped the mid/tall $28's, maybe the low low low $29's into it ....
By stroke of luck, the used car sales manager had driven the car home, so I was able to negotiate the trade value separately with the dealership's general manager - but I figured may as well get the trade value out of the way since I was there. Apparently the used car manager has worked there for 15 years, so he gets a used car to drive his 3 mile commute - he picked this one. General manager I dealt with has been there over 20 years - like I said, an old time family dealership - all the managers and salesmen use Mr. when speaking to each other. Much more dignified than guys in monkey suits and a traveling flea circus on the lot.
I might try negotiating a trunk CD player into the deal if they balk at reducing the cash difference, since I'll be adding one if it is prewired.
If I thought the Dodge wouldn't leave the next guy screwed, I'd private sell it. Beautiful car, but the temperature gauge has acted goofy since the tranny replacement last month :lemon: .

~$1500 private party retail as-is with full disclosure of the current problems, probably in under 1 week. Especially if the A/C still blows cold.
I would try parking it in a good visible location after a good bath and vacuum job. Put a price of $1,900 obo in the windshield and the actual gas mileage you get along with a phone number that you will answer.

The bad: paint on roof is sunburned (could be just clearcoat, but it's kind of a hazy fading, like frost), not horrible, but you can't miss it. Driver's window is a bit slow going up, power locks sometimes need a bit of help, power antenna moody, factory alarm doesn't work, basically normal stuff for a ten-plus year-old car. Front airdam a bit scuffed. Also, had a fairly major ($4500) accident about four years ago, don't know if it's on CarSmack but I suspect it is, repaired nicely. I can't tell, but I'm no expert.
The good: A/C and heat are fine. Still has nice factory alloys, decent leather interior (no rips, a bit of fade, it sits outside in Chicago). No modifications, one older female owner and the low miles, obviously. Within the last six months, she's had new tires, brakes, belts, hoses, filters, fluids flushed and other service to the tune of $1200, so it's ready to go.
I know the low miles can be a bonus, but this thing is still 11 years old and not glowing perfect. Do you think a Honda dealer will even take this as a trade (probably on an '06 Civic when they hit the showrooms)? If so, what do you think they'll offer? Just checked AutoTrader.com, the cheapest '95 Integra around here is $4800 (which I think is nuts), it's identical but has 105k miles. Don't want to be greedy, but don't want to take a lowball just for ease; I figure I can help her sell it privately and maybe even score a small commission for my efforts, especially if I make her $1-2k over trade. I'm just guessing the dealer will offer $2-25 but we can probably get $4k private in a heartbeat. What say you? Thanks!

Last year when I was between jobs for the first time in my life, I sold cars at a local new car dealer. It was the best experience of my life. I think everyone should sell cars for a living, simply for the experience. It should be mandatory for "Life 101." I assure you, it's not only the salesperson who can be a jerk! More often than not, it can be the customer.
Even prior to working at the dealership, I never traded in a car. I always sell them via the newspaper, etc. myself. A hassle, yes, but the time spent is well worth the money. As everyone who reads this board knows, there is a difference between ACV for a trade vs. the "shown" value. There is no free lunch.
I would much rather walk into a dealership without a trade. Negotiations are much simpler and straightforward.

My brother has a 2001 Ford F150 Super cab with the Off Road package. XLT trim with the usual power stuff, am/fm/cd, factory alloys and a drop-in bedliner. Bright red exterior with grey cloth inside.
Has 29,000 miles - getting ready to need tires and rear brakes. Nice cosmetic condition, clean outside and inside, non smoker. Original paint, no body work.
Located in Upstate NY - he is thinking about trading rather than putting brakes and tires, but no real urgency, it looks and drives like a pretty nice truck.
What say you on trade in value, towards another F150, or maybe Titan or Tundra...

I don't plan on trading right now but do plan on looking at the new G6 GTP model so I'd like to be prepared just in case.

We got the auto thing, the miles are waaaaay low, the right color for any area, it's got the slider thing going' on, wheels, leather guts, dual power, we got the good tunes, weak round things, a baby meteorite hit to the transom, new stoppers, service is up to date, you know the previous owner, no smoke, balance of the ext warranty, and you have no children -- would you like some ..? mine are paper trained .......... mint.? as in "Mint Julep's" ....?
If ~~ it's super nice and super clean, no overnight's at Maaco, no Science Experiments in the interior, no KFC boxes piled up in the backseat, no curb burners and no super-glued St Christophers on the dash ..... then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $4's, maybe "could" might get a a dealer to drop the low low low low low low low low low $5's in it, maybe .......
Me personally.? .. down the winding path to Retail Rd it would go .. finish any service, get with the gods of detail, drop a super nice and glorious Ad into the big paper and: $7,950 *asking* - and wave bye bye at the first $6,9/$7,5 ..... if it's a nice one, it won't last long ... the warranty, the low miles and the right options will sell it ...... We lookin' at a 05 Exploder V6 Sport Trac XLT auto ... we got the no sale blue thing going on, 2wd, miles are kinda ho-hum, we have a little sport action, we have a stump puller with the 4.10 (yikes.!), it's got the extender, the cover and a few other do-dads ............. if you haven't battled with anyone at the Florida Mall and no drive-by's on International drive .. then trade side, in and around the low/mid $16's, might maybe get a dealer to wander into the tall $16's ........

Whatta ya mean you added a huge power moonroof .....? .. did your head start spinnin' around during the exorcism and it ripped a hole in it ....? ... it will all depend on the manufacturer, the finish work, the warranty - and the attitude of the dealer .. some dealers (like me) don't get too excited with aftermarkets, plus the miles are kinda stiff .....
If it's a pretty nice one (it needs some rubber) .. no volleyball teams in the backseats, no paint by numbers, no I backed over the Salvation Army collection guy last Xmas ..... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $19's, might maybe get a dealer to wander towards the tall $19's .. it's all going to depend on the slider and the round things ............

Hello, everyone. I am looking to either sell or trade-in a 2005 XC90 in the Charlotte area, and would appreciate your assistance in getting a handle on the real values - which is somewhat tough since there is little information on the 2005's.

options: navigation, reverse warning, climate/bixenons, seven-seater, premium package (leather, moonroof, stereo, etc.)
serviced by Volvo dealers per schedule
perfect condition except for wear on tires typical for the 16000 miles

I now have the dealer here offering $34,000 for that vehicle, which seems to me a bit ridiculous for a 2005 vehicle with not-particularly-high mileage and these options. Perhaps the sticking point is the pricey options, but if a similarly configured 2006 right now gives a sticker price over $48,000, could the one-year old vehicle really be worth only $34,000?...**
$35,000...? ...2005 XC90 2.5 AWD - 16750 miles ...... if you got $35,000 "real money" in Charlotte ~ I would be doing hand flips and barking at the moon in polka-dot pajama's ........ the miles are stiff and it's a 2.5 ...... I gotta a funny feelin' there was alot of "overallowance" being shown here ... dealers are barely paying $35ish for the 05 V8's and T6's with itty bitty miles ......

Sounds like a $5,900 ASKING at private party to me and send it packing with any offer near $5,000. Trade side possibly near $3,500 if the planets are lined up right. Given the engine, tie rod and bearing repairs, my gut tells me it just has not had an easy life. In any case you will have to disclose the major engine replacement and it may really kill your trade in value with a 'used' engine.
well, just to clarify, we had a pro installer put in the biggest, most expensive Webasto roof.
but i got what ya mean. Tough call on the finish work. I've seen better.
thanks for the info. That would put us about $1K upside-down on the truck. Not bad, but not good. We don't have a problem hanging on to it, I've just seen the great deals on the leftover '05s and was thinking we might actually lower our payment by upgrading.

Condition:
Very good condition overall. Good care taken, but regularly driven. Normally garaged. No rips or tears in the interior, but some general wear though, it has 80K. Exterior is dingless and scratch less, but there are a few small rock chips on the front. Paint is shiny and nice. I've ridden in it enough to know that it feels tight and drives very nicely. Clear rear window. No accidents or repaints that I know of.
Tires - are only about 10K old, but that's about half-way gone for a car like this.
Brakes - about 15K old
Maintenance - dealer maintained. All services performed on schedule (although the 90K will be due shortly), all records in hand.
He really doesn't want to sell. He could manage well enough when he only had one child, but now with number two due in short order, it's a much more difficult proposition.

Well ........... it's the right color, the rubber is almost good and the stoppers should be there for a little while, it's got a few baby kisses here and there, it's stairing down the barrel of the 90k service - and you say no paint and no drive-by shootin's ..... if he hasn't used this as a garbage dumpster, no curb burners, the interior doesn't have that soccer Mom look and cold breeze ... then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $10's, maybe the low low low $11's ........ wait til' spring ...? .. hmm, I didn't know they appreciated in value ..l.o.l....
Down Retail Rd for this dude, not a dealers dream with big miles, even with the year .... but in his area, I bet he could find a buyer with a 90k service, a come to Jesus Big Fat Daddy Ad that reaches to LA, get with the Dukes of Detail, have all the history and service super-glued to the dash and: $15,900 *asking* and cry and whimper at $14,5/$15,0 .. but take it ...... if he does it right, he'll sell it quickly ... if he nickels and dimes it, then so will be the offers ... clean cars get clean money and dirty cars get .. well, sometimes ya hafta to make a planter out of em' ...

Cassette, no CD player, but steering wheel controls for radio and autoclimate. MIGHT be prewired for trunk CD, but forgot to check.
Dealer had it for sale for $13,995 - marked it down to $11,995 since this dealership's customers tend to have one foot in the grave, and they don't like the bucket seats, and another model year about to turn over.
With $6,000 trade on the Dodge, what is a fair retail price on this car? Hard to find comparable numbers on an LSE.
I'm also selling my 1994 Grand Marquis - if this 2002 GM is as solid, I'm good for another 100,000 miles. I love my old Grand Marquis, but I don't think the wife will let me have two of them at the same time.

The dealer might have paid the low/mid $10's if it was really nice and it needed -0- when he got it, but I'm sure he put a few nickels into it .... it might hit the table in the tall $10's ....... $11,990...? .. he ain't trying to get rich .. maybe figure your $6,000 trade and a $5,500/$5,900 "difference" - plus the taxes and flea's .....

04 Bimmer X3 with 11k .... no CPO ...? .... we got the Mr. Universe roof, good color for the area, loooooooow miles, Prem pack, bun warmers, sport and a set of blinders .......... if this little dudette is clean to the bone, no Dutch Boys, seats been hovered-in and a puuuurfect history .... then the dealer will probably dropped the mid/tall $28's, maybe the low low low $29's into it ....

I might try negotiating a trunk CD player into the deal if they balk at reducing the cash difference, since I'll be adding one if it is prewired.

I have only a single/simple question for you Terry:
Is this as good a time to get an SUV... any SUV... ? Let me remind you, I have been looking to buy a used LX470 (preferably a MY2003) for the wifey.... I'm thinking all these bad news and oil, and stuff should make SUVs the kiss of death. What should I be looking to pay for an '03 LX470 with less than 50K miles in La La land of So Cal.....?
