Thanks guys, and before I get yelled at by a moderator, sorry for going a bit off topic here. If there is a more appropriate forum, please point me in the right direction.

Never really thought about a Volvo (will have to check reliability), and the older Altimas are too small. I think the older 3 series would be too small too, and I would be afraid of maintenance costs. Budget hasn't been determined, but I'm thinking $5-8k. And something in the late 90's would be preferable. I thought about a Chrysler 300M for a minute today, but the gas mileage isn't any better than my Legend, and they are a bit over budget. Leaning toward an Accord or Maxima at this point, but still open to suggestions. The person who suggested a $2500 car and driving the TL more, I do plan to drive it more, but I like to have a car I can trust on bad days. I like to keep the TL clean in the garage for the nice days. :-)

    Hi qwalls,
No need for me to "yell" at you :) However, please go ahead and visit our discussion called Used Vehicles: Best Values, where your questions will be more topical, and we can leave this discussion for our dealers to provide trade-in pricing on specific vehicles. Thanks!

I actually considered buying a '91 7 series V12 a few years ago. Guys on one of the 7-series boards were saying to budget $250-$300/mo. for repairs & maint. for one of those. (Of course, the 12cyl. would be the most expensive to maintain). But, I never had the guts to buy an old enough 7 that I could afford.

And, I bought an E-24 M6 bmw when it was 5 years old, & spent about $2K on it in 10 years. (At 15 years old tho, it did need $2k-$3K of repairs to replace the original suspension, when I sold it).

I guess I figured a Legend would cost less.

*On the other hand, I think one could expect some major, expensive repairs on a 7-series by the time it hits the ten-year mark, if not before.*

My mechanic once suggested a mid-90s 5 series. He claimed they were very stout.

A friend of mine has a 97 528i that has given very little trouble in the 4 years he's had it -- since 100k, forsooth!

The mechanics at the local BMW dealer have told him the same thing; the 3 and 7 are more trouble than the 5, and when a 5 comes in, it's usually all the same things... like a certain wheel speed sensor that gets knocked out of kilter and stuff like that.

In the fatherland, these are the cars the mid-level executives get as their Dienstwagen; BMW would sell a lot fewer of these if they were trouble-prone... the newer ones have electronic "thingies" go wrong, but the old ones are not as tricked out.

And they can be a good buy in the sense that Terry dings any deutsches Auto very severely if it has 100k or beyond, just on general principle. As far as Q is concerned; I realize I'm spending his money rather than my own, so I'll quit now!

    Hi,
I have an Audi A4 White 1999 Q T leather interior, one previous owner,54,000 miles, full Audi maintenance history. Also has a Kenwood face off tape, radio and 10 disc CD player. I have really looked after this car. Can you tell me how much i would get for this as a trade in? I am getting a 06 A4 model on lease please?

Interesting. I was considering a used X5 for my wife, until I started reading the X5 owners and problems forums here on Edmunds. Geesh, they seem to be riddled with problems.

So that idea is out the door, and it's narrowed to a used 2000 or 01 Land Cruiser, a late 90's or early 2000's BMW 5 series, or a 2003 or newer 4 Runner. I guess any of the three would be okay....but we're the kind of people that pay cash (or mostly cash) and keep our vehicles for quite a while, so I hate to make a bad decision...you know? ;)

What would be your pick out of those three?
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
I can't improve on Mathias' description of the 5 series. The E39's ('97-'03) were mfg. in Dingolfing (sp?), the X5's in the US. I'd say go for one with the I6, as awesome as the V8 is. And get as nice and low-mileage one as you can afford.

Current-gen TLC's & 4 Runners are nice vehicles too. Personally, I like getting 17-23 mpg in my 2.8L E39 auto......no way that's gonna happen in a full size SUV.

    Hi,

I recently totaled my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport in zip code 05401
    86k miles
    Power doors and locks
    Running boards
    Roof rack
    CD / AM/FM stereo
    AC
    Cruise Control
    Tilt Steering
    Fog Lights

The insurance agent called today with a settlement for $7750. I have searched through kkb.com and cars.com to see what other 2001 Explorer Sports are going for around my zip code and am finding most are in the high 9k range. Is it unrealistic of me to assume that I am getting lowballed in terms of Fair Market Value?

    Thanks
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
I assume this is the two-door version? Is it 2WD or a 4x4 (this makes all the difference, especially in colder climates)? This isn't the Post Office, so where is 05401? Don't forget, it has 86k miles, too....
  • wiggles1wiggles1 Member Posts: 12
Sorry ... 05401 is Burlington, VT.

It is a 2door, 4WD. No body rust nothing. I know it has high mileage. I am comparing it against my same vehicle with various mileage, but all right around where my vehicle was.

I'm not trying to win the lottery, just get a fair shake.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
I'm rather uneducated at this, but that seems like a fair figure. You can't compare the value to the asking price of used cars in your area, you need to compare it to actual selling prices and auction prices.

I would gently remind the agent to include sales tax on top of the settlement.
  • wiggles1wiggles1 Member Posts: 12
I'm sorry for asking what may be a dumb questions ... I don't get the sales tax aspect of it. In addition to what my car is ultimately valued at they then have to figure in sales tax? So I would get another 6% (VT sales tax rate) on top of the first number (assuming it has not already been added in)
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,452
That is correct... the insurance is supposed to replace your car.. Sales tax is a cost in replacing the car.. assuming that your state charges sales tax on used cars..

    Hello Terry (rroyce10),

I was told you may be able to tell me if the used car I'm considering is worth the asking price. Here's the details:

zip code - 01746 - West of Boston
    2000 Saab 9-3 SE Conv
    62,300 miles
    2.0 liter 4 cyl Turbo
    Silver/black top
    spoiler/alloys/heated lthr
    near perfect condition
    asking price is $12,998

What's a good price to offer?
    Thanks for your help.

just got back from the dealership when I will be purchasing my new car as soon as this settlement is done. They said I won't get sales tax from my insurance company but that I will get a "sales tax credit" when it comes to my new vehicle. I don't understand that at all either.

    I live in Vermont.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,452
Yeah... that sounds confusing.. I'm not sure how you get a credit, if you aren't trading anything in..

I'd also ask the insurance company.. since they will be writing the check..

Then again.. I'm not from Vermont!!

Tires replaced at 5,000 miles with Michelin Cross Terrain

I purchased this vehicle new in March of 2000. It has always been garaged. Actual miles on vehicle as I write this is 12,700 miles. Never been in any accidents, no door dings, like new inside and out.
Never really liked this vehicle much so I never drive it much. I have my eye on a 2006 Frontier. What would be a fair trade in value I could get from dealer? If I sell myself what could I expect to sell it for? Also would waiting until spring time bring more from this vehicle.

remember the 80 yr. old mother-in-law with the new stint and hip? She died (suddenly)at home in her sleep last Saturday (I say "bravo" to anyone who can cheat the hospital outta $200k for 10 days on a ventilator or the nursing home outta $4k a month for who knows how many years). We bought her the Lexus in November.

    2006 Lexus ES330
    Lubbock Texas
    800 miles!
Sonora Gold I think they call it
    Ivory leather
    heated and ventilated seats
    6 disc changer
    17" wheels
    wood and leather steering wheel
    power rear sunshade
    cargo net and locking wheels
    sunroof
It listed for $35k+ and paid $31.5k

What do we do with a new car with no miles. I probably don't need to say but condition is perfect. Wish I needed the darn thing but we have 2 almost new vehicles.

I am sorry for your loss.

Are you close to a Carmax? They might be the easiest way to get out of the car. You could always sell it private owner but that could take time.

please advise on what we should expect from insurance, as this is the first time we have had to deal with this.

Car was extremely well maintained, dealer serviced, washed weekly, waxed twice in the short time he has owned it.

Sorry for having to ask for this info under these circumstances.

    For a friend of mine:

    2001 Volvo S60 2.4 sedan (not a T)
    61K miles
    Automatic + sunroof
    Leather interior
    Front wheel drive
    Newish tires
New shocks and struts, fresh alignment.
Color is this silvery green metallic. Interior is beige.
Owner bought it used and has taken very good care of it. Was fully detailed a couple months ago.

Here's the kicker - It's had a lot of paint and body work. I guess the right side was badly damaged in an accident and the body shop didn't do a great job of straighten the panels. They are definitely wavey. About 75% of the car has been repainted in the OE color and it looks nice from 20ft but you can see poor masking and overspray here and there. The current owner knew all this and still bought the car :confuse:

They want to trade for a new SUV so any help you can give them on trade in price would be mucho appreciated. Oh, and a few tips for Tiger on using his new clubs would be nice too.

I got about 30K from Edmunds, KBB and NADA. What can I expect if I trade it in for a newer non M-B car? (Acura or Volvo or Lexus)

As events unfold my wife is considering driving the 06 Lexus ES with 800 miles and selling her 04 RX330. Maybe a value on that would be nice so we can weigh the pros and cons

    Lubbock, TX
    04 Lexus 330 FWD
    white over ivory leather
    6 disk changer
    moonroof
    wood and leather steering wheel
    the bigger wheels (not chrome)
    power liftgate
it was kinda the base model
no navigation, ML stereo, or heated seats
zero dents dings and no paint
    13k miles
    2 years left on warranty

As I remember it listed for $39k.

Buys a 325Xi AWD in Indiana, & Leaves it at home when it snows. I can't even think of a punch line. Oh wait, it's coming to me: "there's this Hoosier, see, and one Winter he goes out to the Privy w/out his AWD bmw, & next thing you know........"
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,452
Well... her husband is a bit.. umm... you know.. about his cars.. He made her drive a '92 Camry for ten years and 150K miles, then wouldn't sell it when she got the BMW.. It is her "bad weather" car..

I told her she might as well skip the AWD, if she wasn't going to drive it in the snow..

Doesn't really matter... He believed the sales pitch about how BMWs only depreciate $1K-$2K per year.. When he finds out that his $37K BMW is only worth $18K-$22K after four years, he won't be trading, I don't think..

Being from Kentucky, and adjacent to Indiana... I've got a whole book full of Hoosier jokes.. :surprise:

Ha ha ha ha. BMW's only depreciating $1 or $2K per year...on what planet? Geesh, the stuff that people believe without checking it out. All you need to do is go to Autotrader or Carmax's website and look for yourself. :confuse:

Well, you would certainly get that idea if you look at any dealers used car listings. I think they just keep printing the original MSRP for the first 5 years, although they are "certified"

2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.

  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
I'd be thrilled to get that much back after four years. Was just looking at the ALG residual ratings--a lot of them are on target but it seems way off that they have Land Rover ranked above Mercedes, Acura, and Infiniti. Are you still driving the 330?
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,452
Yeah.. I don't think I'll be doing anything with it.. Over the summer, when I don't have to carpool the kids to school, I'll swap with her.. ( summertime.. convertible.. convenient timing, huh?). If she is still unenamored (not a real word, I know) after that, I might see if I can get the lease assumed then..

Anyway, the '02 325Xi is immaculate.. whatever the range is, it will sell at the top of it.. Her husband is so tight, he squeaks, though...

If I was there, I might buy it for my Winter car. (Altho to me, it usually seems like you might as well go for a wagon, if you're buying an Xi). They should keep it, they've already taken the brunt of the depreciation. And maybe the guy will spring for a set of snow tires someday & let her drive in in winter.....when it's 10 years old, probably :)

P.S. How do you "make" a wife (or any female) do anything? This guy must be smarter than we think.

I'm getting ready to replace my 95 integra 4dr LS w/ either an acura tsx or a honda accord. I expect a large difference in value thru a private sale as I doubt dealers would do anything other than immediatly wholesale a 10yr old car. I think the other advantage w/ this car is that they have a strong demand just for being what they are, and get extra attention from those who like to modify their integras.

    -Boston area
    -mileage 105K
-very clean in and out except for an inch or two of rust starting to show on left rear wheel well
-all routine maintenance has been done pretty much by the book
-bigger ticket items done recently (timing belt at 80K, new radiator/exhaust w/in last 6mo)
-while the car has ABS, I had intermittant problems w/ a component of the abs system that the dealer wanted $1K to fix, and that I demurred on figuring that that was overkill on a 10 yr old car, and that I would go in search of a used one part.

used car calculators suggest that abs adds only about $80, suggesting its not even worth it to fix that.

I'd appreciate any thoughts, esp from the acura dealers here

    5-sp manual?
    4-sp auto?
    Made to order 8-sp tiptronic?

Seriously though, the modifiers rarely if ever seek the 4-dr. The 5-sp manual GS-R is the most sought after. Next only to the limited production Type-R of course.

Hi Terry - long time, no post I am thinking of trading in my 2004 Mazda3 sedan for a 2006 Mazda3 hatch in the next month or two. I just got the inspection/emissions done, and it passed, but the dealer said the tires will need to be replaced soon. Do you think it is worth spending $500-600 for new tires, or just trade it in with the worn tires? I am thinking new tires, but I want your expertise Also, what kind of trade-in amount do you think I could get?

    Thanks again!!

    ..... Well ............

I had to stop off at the 2006 Orlando PGA Merchandise & Convention Show, which by the way, was the largest in history .... so after seeing 10,000 different golf clubs, visiting with Greg Norman, talking with some of the big shots from Callaway/Adams/Bridgstone/MacGregor/Taylor/Precept/Tour Edge, etc, etc and a few minutes spent with Fred (the Funkster) Funk, Annika and the some of the girls from the Big Break V .. well, 1 day day turned into two and two turned into four ....

    ... anywaaay -- REPOST -- ...............

Acura Integra LS 4dr 5spd manual
    1.8l engive, fwd
    beige
    am/fm/cass/power windows/power moonroof/

I'd appreciate any thoughts, esp from the acura dealers here

..... ABS is one of those "safety" issues that a dealer would have to contend with .... so they either fix it, or they send it off to the auction and see what happens .. it's probably auction bound ...

It's a 95 Integra LS with 105k, low miles (for the year) ..... we got some cancer popping over the rear wheel well, it's a handshaker, color is good for the area, no mention of rubber and the service "seems" to be ok .... if you haven't bounced it off the parking posts at Wal-Mart and the interior doesn't look like a drive-by shooting .. then trade side, in and around the tall teens, maybe the low $2's based on the ABS situation -- and remember, rust never sleeps .....

Me personally, I would send it down Retail Rd ... get with some great detail gods, finish any service, have all the service records on the dash, and don't forget the ABS situation issue then grab some great picks and do a super nice Ad on the Boston paper and: $6,900 *asking* and cut it loose at the first $5,5/$6,5 ..... don't get greedy, it's got rust and don't forget the ABS disclosure ~ and make sure the new buyer signs it and has a copy ....

Let me know what happens .......

    Just curious how we did.

We listed the following on Ebay.

2003 Acura MDX Touring with Navigation
    61,000 miles
    Location: Atlanta, GA
    Exterior: Sage Brush (grayish-gren)
    Interior: Quartz leather (light gray)
    Engine/Transmission: 3.5L V6/5-speed automatic
Options: Leather, roof, NAV, memory seats, heated seats, BOSE 6-disc changer, dual power seats, keyless
Accessories: Wood grain steering wheel & Shift knob, roof rack, running boards, factory carpeted mats & all-weather mats, cargo cover, cargo net
Condition: One 1" scratch on the driver's side door, one small ding in the driver's side passenger door, one slight scuff mark on the rear bumper, and one rock chip on the hood. All are minor and I would assume they are to be expected on a 3 year old car with 61,000 miles.
Mechanical: Everything works, 60,000 mile service has been done, no known mechancal problems. Drives great.

We sold it for the Buy It Now price of $23,500. The Buy It Now price also included a brand new set of 20" wheels/tires for the MDX that my husband bought a month or so ago. Was that fair for both sides?
