What the heck is a: "new 47,000 auto" .....?
Another one from the Philly area .... we're lookin' at a 04 Nissan Maxima SL with 24k .. it's the auto thing, it's a good color thing, it's the slider thing, it's a lower mileage thing - new brakes at 20k ...? .. your supposed to drive with one foot, not one on the gas and one on the brake, you must related to my g/f .. and there is no such thing as "excellent" unless you're drivin' a new Cayman "S" with 600 miles .....
If ~~ we haven't bounced off any curbs at K-mart, no Mcdonalds wrappers stuck to the ceiling and no I have a Swiss Army knife in my back pocket .... then trade side, in and around the mid/high $20ish figure, might "maybe" get a dealer to wander towards the $21 figure on a good day and he didn't miss the points on the Clippers game .... Nissan makes some nice stuff, but dealers aren't too friendly with the loaded up Maxima's ...
Terry.
2002 Z28 Camaro, 48K miles.
Black (ugh, I know, tough in summer heat here), 6 speed.
Pretty well loaded. Black leather interior, steering wheel, shift knob, Hurst shifter.
T-Tops, power mirrors, windows, doors, keyless entry, power driver's seat, foglights, traction control, rear window defroster (yeah, that's reallllly important here).
Decent condition, except for 3 noticeable parking lot dings (small, I think easily popped out by DentPro). Minor blemishes on the hood (*&^%ing trucks not covering dirt/gravel loads well) but I'd do my best to have it nicely detailed, and probably get some touchup paint applied between now and then. Not smoked in, and I've done my best to take care of it well - I'm the only owner, bought it new.

Yes, you read that right. Come on, akangl was putting 40k a year on her car, only difference is, my dad keeps his longer than six months... And, I think the farthest it's been driven out of Kentucky is to Chicago, which is actually kind of sad...
Here it is again, so you don't have to scroll back:
Louisville, Kentucky
2003 Volkswagen Beetle GL TDI
2 door
1.9L Turbo diesel, manual FWD
145,000 tall miles
Dark grey exterior, black interior
Only option was seat heaters on the cloth seats. It has the standard stuff, power windows, remote locks, power mirrors, AM/FM tape player, no alloy wheels.
Interior is in great condition for the mileage. Exterior is in good condition. The front bumper was repainted ($350). Fairly new windshield. Tires are Michelins showing about 8/32" tread remaining, the brakes are factory but in good condition (highway driving).
It has had all the scheduled maintenance, synthetic diesel oil, timing belt at 100k and again at 120k due to a locked up tensioner (don't ask).
Could you please provide private party and trade-in values?
Could you give me some numbers on the following vehicles? The van is leased, up in a few months but the Civic we own free and clear, just toying with some ideas...would like to walk away with two new cars!

I was busy... Wed afternoon, our executive secretary comes to my office, a Korean gentleman in tow. This, she said, was Professor N. here to work with us for a sabbatical. The good professor, she continued, was in need of wheels, and could I help.
A short interview with the good man confirmed that (i) he was in funds, so at least no bottom-feeding; that (ii) his command of English rivaled my command of Korean, and (iii) that if he went by himself to just about any dealership, we should all be heartily sorry.
Long story short; another chap took care of the insurance, and I got him an '04 Taurus SE wagon in nice shape, with 84k miles, for $6,900 + taxes and fleas... This through my good friend A. with the car lot here in town, who made the process rather easy on everybody, and being happy with a rather modest profit on the deal.
Anyway, so 45 hours after the initial contact Missus N. and the professor were owners, and then they had me show them how to pump gas.... but that's a story for another time...

Welcome back from Costa Rica. I'm pretty close to trading in a 2002 Nissan Altima and I'm interested in your thoughts . . .
Albany, NY (although she lived in Washington DC for her first two years)
2002 Nissan Altima 2.5S
4 door
2.5L, 4 cyl, manual
RWD
40k miles
Tan/tan
ABS and airbags, single CD player, but no other major options
Condition is about what you'd expect in a four year old car
Original tires but they're swapped out in the upstate NY winters for Blizzaks (any value to the 2-year-old Blizzaks?)
One year old brake pads
Regular oil changes and a majority of the scheduled maintenance
Prior bodywork on left side rear door and panel after low speed merging "incident"-- relatively minor dents and scrapes were fixed by a quality shop for <$2k
Gracias senor.
2004 Mazda6 S Wagon
3.0 liter 6 cylinder,5-speed automatic
FWD
32,000 miles
Light green/gray cloth interior

Exterior good, interior a little worn (few stains on carpets, fabric on rear seats "pilling")
New tires
No wrecks
Thanks, Terry. You've helped out a couple of times over the years and been spot-on.

mid/high $20ish figure, might "maybe" get a dealer to wander towards the $21 figure on a good day... Those figures will work for me.

Looking for an 05 Grand Marquis and am wondering if shopping the Mercury dealer is better than, say, the Ford store. I'd guess the Merc dealer since this is where the cars were leased from and returned to. The elderly owners most likely had all the service done at the dealer, so the history is available to me, Mr. potential buyer.
Would the Mercury shop price them more than the Ford place? I guessed that if Ford has a Merc, it was a trade-in or bought at auction and the history is cloudy, at best.
Once I start shopping, prepare for examples and help with pricing, along with a TIV request for my 98 Olds Intrigue (hoping to get maybe 4.5 for it - details later).
Thanks for any help!

Terry,
Went to Honda tonight, at the end of deal on the Pilot, I offered the Olds on trade, asked for $7,500 and they gave it to me no questions asked.
I got the Pilot for under invoice and I didn't mention the trade until after the deal was done. *strange*
But no complaints in DA Windy City as tonight I will put extra cheese sauce on DA NACHO'S DAAAAAAAAAA BEARS!
Didn't know you were from Chicago - right across the lake from where I grew up.
$7,500 ....? .. this is called an "overallowance" figure .. meaning they probably put $6,0 into the Aurora and the rest is "showed" on paper ... a Honda dealer isn't going to put $7,5 into a domestic when they can buy one at the Chicago auction with half the miles for $6,000 ....
Golic, after all my hard work with you ..... :surprise: ... ya gotta new vehicle, now enjoy it .. they're are excellent SUV's.
Terry.
That sounds almost like one of those very heart wrenching Christmas stories ..l.o.l... don't ya just love being stuck in the middle of that stuff ...

Great description, thanks .....
In the land of "lost wages" ..... this is a 02 Camaro Z28 El coupe' with 48k .... miles are ok, it's black, it's a handshaker, it's black, we got the tops, all the power stuff, we got some rock and roll in the paint, not much going on here that's really bad except it's black ......... if the rubber is deep, the air is Polar, the service is 100% and no mystery visits to Maaco ... then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $11's, might "maybe" get lucky and see the low/mid $12's, maybe ... I have a funny feelin' the color and the handshaker might hold it back, but that's a maybe ....
Believe it or not, this is a hard one to put a figure on ... Vegas is booming and it's a weird market place .. I get calls all the time from dealers out their lookin' for inventory, there's not much difference between Vegas and S. Cal, they pay big $$ for higher mileage vehicles ...
This might be a great vehicle down Retail Rd because of the crazy market and it's still cool there, and most will miss the color ..... fix the dings, do the detail dance, get a Donald Trump Ad and $14,490 *asking* and cut it loose for $13,5/$13,9 ....
Let me know how this one goes .....

What's the deal with Subaru's? I am thinking about a Forester XT (the turbo) and the asking prices seem all over the place.
I'm in Seattle. That could be part of the problem.
I have seen them range from $19,5K to $25k for a 2004 with around 25k miles on them. No granola included. Big range here; what do these things bring for trade? Let's say:
Location: Seattle
2004 Subaru Forester XT
2.5 4 cyl turbo
AWD
30k miles
Silver
AT
Cloth seats; no extra options
Good overall retail condition; no scratches, dents or bumper stickers (it is a Subaru)
I'd like to know what these bring for trade and at auction to better know what the dealer is in it for, as well as a fair dealer retail price. Would adding leather and a sunroof dramatically affect the value? Is a manual tranny worth less?
Thanks!

How are you? I have a 2003 White Acura TL Type-S (w/o Navi) with a little over 30,000 miles. At what price would this trade at auction in the 08724 zip code?
My lease is up at the end of July and the residual is around $20 because I paid for 45,000 miles. I see low mileage Type-S cars offered on Autotrader.com anywhere from $21 to $24. I've heard that Honda Finance doesn't really negotiate their residuals, but I'd like to put in a respectable bid anyway.
Thanks,
Peter
Remember the deal with me selling the sick parental unit's little old lady '04 Hyundai Accent, with a stick and no air? Well, my mother has made something of a miraculous recovery, and now wants wheels again. Guess I should be glad and thankful, but now me the dutiful son has to find her cheap reliable transporation.
She would preferably like something small. Her ideal car has always been 4 cylinders, manual tranny, brakes and steering (!). After spending most of my Saturday scouring print ads, on-line ads, and various used car lots, there are simply no used 97-98 Escorts, Tracers, Saturn SL's, or Cavaliers with mileage in the 65-70k range to be had in North Jersey, certainly not under the $5k limit she is budgeting. Closest I came was at a Saturn dealer advertising a 97 SL1 with 98k for $4990, that they would go down to $4500 on. Yikes. I told them they had a $2k at best wholesale car, that real retail was under $4k; why would I pay more? They told well, most people just pay the asking price, but they couldn't disagree with me, saying they were having to give overallowance on trades to move new stock, and just trying to make it stick on the used side. This dealer also had a black on black 5 speed no air Ion masquerading as a peat moss pot in the showroom, as proof of their altered state of reality. I actually blurted out, "who was the rocket scientist that ordered that?" They did have a '98 with 78k that had just come in on trade, that still might be a possibility, but that is some strong money.
Then there were the few private party sales I tire kicked. The ads looked so promising. One was a '96 Dodge Stratus w/ 65k, asking $3500, with new tires. Which was the only good thing about it. Dents in the hood and one of the doors, and an amazingly deep crease in the right side rocker. Faded interior. And when started, the unmistakable sound of a cylinder head to exhaust manifold leak. Pass.
Anything at the used car only places I'm finding typically show getting whacked on the Carfax, or have stupid high mileage.
Then there is the car I should have just gone and bought, but kept looking for something decent smaller. '98 Sable GS sedan, 68k, really clean-could pass for an '04, tan/brown, Michelin rubber in good shape, advertised for $3995 on the used car side of a Nissan dealer. Carfax came up clean. I think tomorrow I need to be there yesterday. Though, this would be mom's first automatic since the '58 Chrysler New Yorker she had when I was born.
I have a 2004 Subaru WRX wagon, black, 36k miles, sunroof, 5 speed, still under Subaru extended warranty. I live in Santa Cruz, CA. What's my car worth as a trade in?
Thanks.

It's six years old and then some, it's the S10 of questionable quality, it's the 2.2l pushrod four, which has little to recommend it, and I'm assumingthat it's a regular cab... right?
Seems like $3,200 is on the money, and the $4 is an overallowance. And no, you don't get any extra value for repairs... you just avoid the deduction for a busted ABS system.
I'm not trying to make fun of you, I understand that you're new to this and are trying to learn something, and I applaud you for it. But the S10 is a dog in the market, and small reg cab pickups are simply not setting the world on fire...
Good luck,
-Mathias
Drives nice. Got some swirlies in the paint (but, it's black and kind of expected....looks like it's been to a couple of $2 car washes). Inside is clean and they put that "shiny" stuff all over the inside and on the tires.
No obvious body work.
How much do you think the dealer has in this thing? What do you think would break it loose from their clutches?
Thanks!
I am sure there is zero market for a 2wd pickup in NJ and the market is soft so they probably already over allowed 300 bucks for your right off the bat.
You know all overallowing does is mean that they won't discount the car you are buying as much. I am not sure of NJ is a tax on the differance state or not but even if it is that is only a handful of dollars differance.

Deal is contingent on the dealer being able to demonstrate either that the truck was not impacted by Ford's 2004 transmission fluid screwup, or that it's been remediated. Last dealer offer was $16,500. Edmunds says $16,900 or so in our area.

A dealer offered $12k as trade-in, carmax offered $13k. I was planning on asking 15.5 to 16 in private party sale. What do you think? Thanks in advance for your help.
Wish I had the time and patience for retail, but I can't afford to be without a vehicle for any length of time, nor do I ever want to walk into a dealership when I HAVE to buy a car RIGHT NOW. Bad for my bargaining.
Soonest I'll be stopping by Infiniti is March 10, possibly later. Will check back and let you know. Thanks again.
I priced out his Tracker with Edmund's TMV, and for "average" they come back with around $765, for "clean" they come up with around $1280. I know the "outstanding" category is a mythical tradein, so I didn't even bother. Anyway, it's just RWD, automatic tranny, alloy wheels (came with some package that had a few decals here and there...I think it was called the "Expressions"?), AM/FM/single CD stereo, power steering/brakes. Does that sound like a reasonable price to expect...somewhere between $765-1280. I had originally guessed about $1000, which is right in the middle.
As for the Xterra, he wants an "S" model, 4wd with automatic tranny. IIRC the ones he was looking at stickered for around $25.5-26K, with shipping. Checking on Edmunds TMV, they're saying around $24.3K. Are these figures realistic? Or would they be willing to come down more on an Xterra?
As for me, I'm trying to go as long as I can without a car payment, so in the meantime I guess I have to live vicariously through my friends! :shades:
