As far as price is concerned, others can jump in, but I think $12k-$13k are pretty decent prices, assuming they have a few options on them.... What options do they have?
I have a 2000 Maxima GLE, loaded with options (side airbags, sunroof, Bose radio, heated leather seats, etc.), bit less than 80,000 miles, in good condition and I love the car. I understand it would be worth somewhere around 10 - 11k, maybe, if I sold it.
However, I want to keep it for maybe another 4 - 5 years, if at all possible. At that point it might have 160,000 miles or so.
Would such a car at that point, say 10 years old, high miles, have any resale value at all? Would I be better off giving it to a charity and taking the deduction? As a general rule, is there any sort of mileage number beyond which no one wants the car at all as a trade or as a re-sale?
At 160K about the only cars that still carry extra money are the Toyotas and Hondas and a few other select models from other names.
That said, even with 160K, if all the maintenance has been kept up, looks good (no rust), no mechanical issues and everything works, someone still may buy it private party for around $2000. The charity deduction is asking for an IRS audit of the last several years, plus you only save between 15% to 30% actual cash money of the cars auction value on your taxes.
If you are into the charity kind of thing, and your Pastor of your church knows someone who needs a car to get to work but has little extra money, you can 'partially donate' the car to them at 50% of the expected $1000-$2000 retail value. This will net you more than the tax write off savings and keep the IRS from flagging your return.
So in a nutshell, if the car is worth say $11,000 now, and maybe $1,000 5 years from now, it's costing me around $2,000 in depreciation every year?
You are trying to equate depreciation along with loss of value due to miles. Those are two different things. A car loses in general an average of $0.05 per mile driven just due to wear and tear. Depreciation is the loss in value over time due to various market factors and consumer demand. Even if your car would lose zero amount due to depreciation (which it won't) for the next 5 years, it would still lose around $4,000 just from 80K miles driven.
It costs something to get from point a to b no matter what method of transportation you use. The goal is to be as comfortable and enjoyable of a trip for a low amount of money.
Year/Make/Model: 1999 Toyota Tacoma
Body Style: 2Dr SR5 Extended Cab SB
Engine: 4.3 L V6
Driveline: 4-speed automatic / 4WD
Mileage: 106000
Color: Black
Major Options: alloy wheels; running boards; AM/FM/Cassette/single CD; bed liner; clock; cruise control; tilt steeing; tow hitch; rear bed tool box
Condition:
Good condition (few minor scratches around tailgate, small stains on carpet, few small dings around body
Tires: essentially new tires (less than 2500 mi / Goodyear Wrangler RT/S 31 x 10.5 x R15)
Brakes: Front: Disc [brand new] / Rear: Drum
Maintenance: all major indicated service (tune-ups, etc.); oil change every 3000 mi; all documentation
Other: wrecked once with body damage to rear quarter panel, wheel, axle with all damaged parts being completely replaced with new parts. No damage to frame.
Most of "book value web sites" place value around $6 - 8K trade-in. Is this realistic? Too high/low?
Well, depends on market. But let's say it's worth less, say $8500, but will still be worth maybe $1,000 5 years from now. That makes the next five years very cheap, comparatively speaking.
Was hoping you may be able to help me out here. Your advice was great in helping me secure a recent lease on an 05 MDX.
I am now in the last 5 months of a 48 mo lease on a 2002 Volvo S60 T5. My payments are $491/mo ($2500 total left). I have a security deposit for $491, which should come back when I turn the car in. My buy out on the car is $19,400.
Car details
2002 Volvo S60 T5 - 41k miles
Black with Taupe leather interior
Auto trans
17" sport wheels
In dash CD changer
I really want to get out of the car and into a new BMW 330i. Do you have any suggestions as to what the best route is?
My sense is the car is worth less than the buy out, so I can't sell it or trade it in without incurring a big charge (which I am trying to avoid). Volvo says I can roll forward into a new vehicle, but only if it is another volvo.
Thanks for your help,
Chris
No, Terry was at the Doral for the last 2 days ... we didn't stay today because it was packed, I mean paaaacked .. probably 40,000+ some people - Yikes.!
What can you say.? .... Tiger .. he seems to beat you no matter what.

Like someone mentioned .. watch those car donations, they are "almost" a guaranteed IRS audit ..... I know folks say "so what", but you're on their radar for the last 3 years and the "next" 3 years ... so much for "so what" ..l.o.l...
Lets use the last 10 years ...... a 1995 *clean* 160k Maxima GLE with deep rubber, cold breeze, no paint by the 6 year old down the street, no Bonnie and Clyde interior and it looks/feels and drives like 50/75k ... then it's worth in and around the $1,500/$2,000 zipcode on a trade .. and it would see $3,500ish down Retail Rd if everything works and runs strong .. you'd see $2,000 if Tiger used it for target practice ..

You'll love Augusta.! .. it's probably one of the most beautiful courses you'll see, especially during the spring time ... and this year (as you probably know) the PGA has "Tiger proofed it" by adding another 600 yrds to the course .. which makes no sense to me, that's like making football fields 120 yards long .. it cut's out the players like Demarco, the Funkster, Maruyama, Faldo, Couples and others ...... let's hope Phil can get that 47 inch driver straightened out .l.o.l.... 47 inches.?? .. I just cut mine back to 44.5 ...
Anywhoooo ......... up there in Virginny .. we got this 02 Volvo S60 T5 with 42,000 tiny miles .. auto, the color is good for the area, we got the tunes and sports stuff, we got some wheels, we got some moo seats, the rubber is half there, new stoppers and you say the service is 100% ......
If ~ we have no paintwork, no curb burners, no I dragged my golf bag over the rear bumper 200 times and it's c-l-e-a-n ...... then trade side, in and around the super tall $13's low/mid $14's depending on the dealer ...... what vehicle are you trading for..?

How are you? I have a 2003 White Acura TL Type-S (w/o Navi) with a little over 30,000 miles. At what price would this trade at auction in the 08724 zip code?
My lease is up at the end of July and the residual is around $20 because I paid for 45,000 miles. I see low mileage Type-S cars offered on Autotrader.com anywhere from $21 to $24. I've heard that Honda Finance doesn't really negotiate their residuals, but I'd like to put in a respectable bid anyway.
Thanks,
Peter
I'm looking for trade & private sale numbers for:
Kansas City area
2002 Dodge Dakota Club Cab SLT+ 2WD, Dark garnet red/silver two tone, dark grey cloth inside.
4.7l V-8, Auto tranny, two wheel drive, 42,000 miles, 16" alloys, pretty well loaded.
Major options:
Bucket seats, overhead Convenience Group (overhead console, auto-dim rearview, homelink & trip computer)
Heated folding outside mirrors, leather wrapped steering wheel, all power except seats, anti-spin diff, fog lights, etc.
It's in pretty good shape for a 4 year old. no dents, not eaten or smoked in, and if you ask me looks pretty darn good when cleaned up.
All maint. is good, new tires, front rotors & pads about 5,000 miles ago. Also, I installed a roll-up soft tonneau cover. When it was about six months old, I ran over Bambi.
As a result, the right front fender & headlight assy. was replaced, the hood, bumper cover & entire right side was "reconditioned". The repair was excellent, only cosmetic damage, and I dont think most people could tell anything happened without looking for it.
Thanks for any help. I enjoy reading these foums!

Just curious, but since it is an '03, how much longer on the term? I would guess that financially she will be way better off to just run out the lease and turn it in and walk away.

Thanks
She leased it in September '03 for 48 months, so about 18 payments left.
of course, edmunds says its about a $14k trade-in ... so real-world might be $11k? Hondas are just too tough to guess at.

Thanks for the update ..... $19,750 ..? ...
I should have been a little more clear on the appraisal ... the new Maxima's have a funny niche in the market .. they might sell well in Philly, but not so well in Pittsburg .. the Altima's seem to do a little better across the board, but then again it was being traded at an Audi store ... :P ........ you didn't get creamed, so enjoy your new ride.!

Drives nice. Got some swirlies in the paint (but, it's black and kind of expected....looks like it's been to a couple of $2 car washes). Inside is clean and they put that "shiny" stuff all over the inside and on the tires.

A couple of small dings, a slight scuff on the rear bumper, usual chips on the nose, and a little rim rash.

**and it looks like it is going to be a total** .... aaah yeah, not unless you have Gloucoma, that's what I would be thinkin'.! ... it should have been totaled at $$5,0/$6,0 ..... Retail Rd.? - I agree $8,5/$9,5 would be a "fair" *asking* retail price ...
When they finally get to the final figure (whatever that might be) "then" ask for the taxes ......
Don't forget to let me know .!
Terry - I forgot to let you know. Well better late than never.
They insurer refused to total at almost $9K in damages. Said it was a $12k retail piece and wanted to fix it. I almost gave myself a hernia laughing. They refused to budge.
I took the check for the damages, gave the body shop a few bucks for their trouble and sold it for scrap.
I'm amazed they didn't call that totaled. I thought if it was more than 50 - 60%, it was considered a goner.
Looking for your expert opinion. Will I get a better deal at a Mercury dealer on an 04-05 GM, or will I pay a premium? Will a Ford dealer be better to deal with?
I see on eBay there's an 03 LSE (with the console and floor shift) with 18K in Vero Beach. The Buy It Now price is 15800. Seems a little high given it's three years old and very little warranty period left.
How about this outfit on the East Coast called "Off Lease Autos"? They're all over eBay. I'd rather not buy off the internet, but if I can get an idea where best to shop, that's the battle won.
Thanks.
Oh, to keep this on-topic, how about a number for my car?

Only options on the car are rear spoiler (factory) and integrated antenna in rear window (this was an option on first-year Intrigues).
53700 miles, a few door dings, but paint is great (waxed regularly), no McDonald's attacks. Only bodywork was 2 1/2 years agon when I was tagged by a parking lot hit and run to the tune of $680. Replaced right headlight assembly, a little hammer work on right front fener. Paint a perfect match (took to a local hot rod/restoration shop)
The standard equipment sold me on this car new. Traction control, 4 wheel disc ABS, cassette/CD stereo (not Bose), etc.
Hoping for around $4K for trade.... KBB shows $2500!!!

Ding on left rear bumber (paint scratched off slightly) and two dents on front left side of hood about 1-2cm wide each and a couple of millimeters deep (the paint did not chip). Stain on passenger seat, not TOO noticable.
Tires - unsure, however original tires rotated whenever recommended
Brakes - unsure
Maintenance - scheduled maintenence always done with records, only unscheduled maintenance was a recall that replaced the catalytic convertor at about 37K miles.
Other: Not sure if this is important, but trading it in for a 2006 Scion tC - high demand car (2 month wait), so not sure how much trade in value will be negotiable.
Accident damage - paint from other car scraped off on rear bumper (will be repainted, possibly cover up my other paint scraping back there?). Front bumper and grille being replaced. Total damage $1000 hopefully being paid by the person that hit me.
I had a quote of $8400 on the car before the accident and the car is supposed to look exactly the same as it did before it. Any chance of losing value if the dealer finds out (would he even check the car (other than looking at it's physical appearance) again)?
Thanks for the help!
Jennifer
I'm amazed they didn't call that totaled. I thought if it was more than 50 - 60%, it was considered a goner.
Here in MA, many insurers hand you the check and you're on your way. If you decide not to repair the vehicle, they'll just limit you on future claims.
As for the percentage, my insurer looks for 80%. I think because they had kicked out over $11K on a claim 18 months earlier, the adjustor was treating this Accord like it was an investment for them.

There is plenty of nice clean Grand Marquis around, especially in Florida .... the 03 LSE is probably worth in and around the super duper tall $11's low/mid $12's on the dealer side, it might hit the table at the super tall $12's with those low low low miles .......... $15,800..? .. he ain't trying to hurt anyone, but you could probably buy it for $14,5ish or less .. not a whole lot going on in Vero Beach right now ...
The thing about ebay, is alot of folks fall for the "buy it now" price .. but if you go direct, you can usually negotiate a much better price .. like myself on a particular golf club, the "buy it now" price was $199 .. but after I emailed him and spoke on the phone a few times, I got the club "and" the new Aldila graphite shaft for $129 .. a great buy considering the shaft alone is worth $80 .......
Anywaaaay ....... the base Intrigue is worth .. (drum roll please) .. in and around the $2,500ish range, might maybe "could" find a dealer that might struggle towards the $3,0 figure, big maybe - Kbb is pretty close on this one, and the low miles save it ...... $4,000.??? .. is that a new Radu I see in the glove box.? ..l.o.l.. ...... me personally.? .. down Retail Rd it would go ... you know the deal by now .. great detail, great pics, super Ad and $4,950 *asking* and wave bye bye at the first $4,0/$4,5 ..... I bet this won't last long if properly done - it's the right price and miles.!
Don't forget the update .................. :P

PS: East Coast is a dealer out of Orlando(?) and they buy alot of vehicles at the auctions, I see them around quite a bit and like many dealers now, they use the eBay route .....

So if the history is c-l-e-a-n, no Dutch Boys, no curb burners and has the CPO ..... then the dealer probably has in and around the strong $28's, maybe even the low $29's in it .... ya "might" grab it for the mid $30's low low $31ish figure, maybe ....... these silly things are like the CRV's, they get stupid $$ ...... me personally, I would go new .... for $50ish more a month you can get a brand new one and run it thru all the $2.00 car washes you can find ~ with the windows down if you so choose ...... ...
Let me know how it goes ......................."
Terry...this would ba a "cash" deal. So, the payments aren't as much of a concern.
Anyway, got a call from the dealer this a.m. He said he'd do the used CPO '05 TL for $30,800....or about right where you said he'd be.
He also said he'd do a new '06 TL, same equipment, any color, for $34,8......that's a $4K swing from one model year to the next....with no appreciable difference in the cars.
Now, I've got to make up my mind if the $4K swing is worth it on the back end when I'm looking to move on to something else, somewhere down the line.
You're right....I've driven the '05....nice cars, these TLs.
Every state is different.... I've lived in MA and PA, which I believe both use 80%. Now I live in NC which uses 25%.
If you are really upside-down in your car and you want total it to get out of it, come on down to NC!!! Ha! :P (Please note, I am not advocating insurance fraud.
