Hello, first time poster, long time lurker. Great info here!

Anyway, looking to buy a new Acura TSX w/ nav. I can get great prices on the car, but no dealer seems to want to give me a fair trade on my 2001 Volvo S60 2.4T. With options added, here's some trade-in values:
    Edmunds: 12,950
    kbb: 11,715 (good condition)
    nada: 14,200

Volvo has 62K miles, dark blue exterior, beige interior, fairly new tires, 60K service recently done.
    All the standard equipment plus:
    headlight cleaners
    power moonroof
    power front seats
    heated seats
    wood trim
    leather
    leather steer wheel
    AM/FM/CASS/CD/CD changer
    stability control

Overall, clean condition. A couple of dings and stratches, but nothing out of the norm for this age car. It cleans up nice.

Dealers are only offering around 10K and don't seem to want to budge...am I being unreasonable for wanting at least 11K?

    Thanks!!!

yup. mid 12s should be about right. figure closer to 12 if it needs cleaning and reconditioning ... closer to 13 if it "glows in the dark."

    2005 Chevy Colorado "Taliban Special"
    reg cab, 5sp, black, 4cyl. 10,000 miles.

    In mid-MI (of course).

AC and not much else; cruise is standard (I think), but
crank windows and no remote locks. AM/FM radio, no CD.

Nice shape, clean, non-smoker, no smells, no grease spots.

What's it worth wholesale, how much to sell on the street?

    Thanks in advance,

Hi Terry, I need some help figuring out what these might be worth. I'm looking at some '05 and '06 Outback XT Limited Wagons all located at a Subie dealer in MA. This model has the 250hp STI 2.5L 4-cyl turbo motor in them. Also, being XT Limited's they all come pretty much loaded including leather, dual sunroof, complete cold weather setup. Plus, they all have a meat cleaver 5-spd, the only way to own one of these IMHO. All of them are like new in/out condition with no visible damage.

Now for the stuff that differentiates them:
    '05 Black w/black, 12K miles, asking $25K
    '05 Gold w/taupe, 5.6K miles, asking $26K
    '06 Black w/black, 11 miles... I repeat 11 miles, asking $27K

I'm told the '06 is a "program" car whatever that means, with a new title. Although its warranty started ticking a few weeks ago when it was bought by the dealership. They actually have a bunch of the '06's all with under 15 miles... all priced at $27K with a manual or $28K with an auto... what gives???... could these be hurricane specials or something???

Thanks for any guidance you can provide.

...... EL' Baso with a reg cab, we got 10k, crankers, it's a handshaker and it's a 4 banger ....... where's the good news.? .l.o.l... aaahh yes, we got some breeze ....

Not having the power pack and not having the auto I can understand ... but what's goin' to kill this puppy is the 4 banger ...... it's going to kill 70/80% of the buying market .. say goodbye to the roofer, electrician, the heating guy down the street, the guy who does lawns and the average guy (like me) that just goes to Home Depot to get a new Barbeque grill every other 3rd month ...... ya know you're in trouble when the blue hairs blow by ya in their 1996 Buick Century custom ~ this ain't no Viper ........... if it's a Z85 you might be lookin' at the super tall $7's low/mid $8's on the trade side .....

The funny part is ... I've seen dealers snatch these up and when they load them on the transport, then they find out it's a 4 banger  .. maybe they're Dyslexic.? .... maybe $9,900ish(?) and down on the *asking* part, then poke yourself in the eye and hope no one looks under the hood ....... what are they asking.?

    Terry.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
    ..... what are they asking.?

"They" is "me", and I ain't asking anything yet. I'm trying to figure out whether I should buy it new for the wife's business. Or if I should leave it alone 'cuz I'll lose my shorts.

A truck like that would fill our needs pretty well, and with one thing and another, I can buy it new for very low $12s OTD.

The auction info I was able to get doesn't look quite THAT grim; "avg" condition 5speeds 4cyl reg cab:

    03/09/06 NORTHSTR Regular $9,400 5,899 Avg GREY 4G 5 Yes
    03/21/06 BALTWASH Lease $9,200 8,330 Avg RED 4G 5 Yes
    03/07/06 BALTWASH Lease $9,400 9,185 Avg SILVER 4G 5 Yes
    02/22/06 HRSNBURG Lease $10,000 9,413 Avg GOLD 4G 5 Yes
    03/17/06 NEVADA Lease $10,200 12,121 Avg RED 4G 5 Yes
    03/02/06 GTR PHNX Lease $10,800 13,387 Avg RED 4G 5 Yes

BUT none of these trucklets was anywhere near here, and they may be much better equipped.

This is a super-conservative market -- as you know -- and that is why I asked. It looks like I ought to make sure we *really* like it before I get one.

I thought the 4cyl did fine with this small truck, but then I also think a V6/5sp is a great combo for a Silverado...LOL... my fellow Michiganders disagree...

Thanks a bunch. Even though it's not what I wanted to hear. Hmmm. Back to the drawing board... I might lose my CCBA membership...

... I looked at em' before I posted .. so if you step back, the numbers are inline ...

    03/09/06 NORTHSTR Regular $9,400 5,899 Avg GREY 4G 5 Yes
    03/21/06 BALTWASH Lease $9,200 8,330 Avg RED 4G 5 Yes
    03/07/06 BALTWASH Lease $9,400 9,185 Avg SILVER 4G 5 Yes
    02/22/06 HRSNBURG Lease $10,000 9,413 Avg GOLD 4G 5 Yes
    03/17/06 NEVADA Lease $10,200 12,121 Avg RED 4G 5 Yes
    03/02/06 GTR PHNX Lease $10,800 13,387 Avg RED 4G 5 Yes

they're few and far between ... so you can't average them by region or by mileage .. and like you said, maybe had more options - maybe ...

.. most dealers want to be "at least" $500 back of auction $$ ... ya can't count Vegas or Phoenix cuz' that market is "indigenous" to itself (l.o.l.. that's a fancy $10 word for they pay stupid $$ for just about anything, at least right now) and they're probably GMAC leases ....

If you plan on driving the wheels off it during the course of the business use, what difference is it going to make when you want to unload it? Although where can you get a ultra light duty work truck for the $10K price and just drive it till the cows come home?

IMHO an extended cab truck is way easier to sell for real money, even a stripped down one but it needs the useable back seat. If you even think of needing to unload it before it is used up, why not get the extended cab version of the same?

The lease residual for 24/24 is $8,000 -- at least they're honest LOL...

I guess I'm over it now... shoulda kept that Nissan hardbody 4 years ago, eh?

I sometimes wonder if GM's business model is to sell cars to clueless people. And eventually, they're gonna run out of those, or rather, those people will run out of money.

GMAC just announced they will now finance 120% of MSRP. Now that's a step in the right direction!

    99 Impreza wagon 2.2l 100k 5sp $4,750

When I got there, it was black, it looked alright, but it had a little crinkle in the right rr door.

It had also sold, for the full asking price. Ouch.

I was just gonna ask; what happened to the new FS Chevy P/U for around the same price? I'd go for that. And, if you're worried about "losing your shorts", maybe don't buy a brand new stick shift truck (?) ......let the moths out of the wallet & pay the extra $$ for the "right" power-train combo.

    Just my 2 cents.....

*Or if I should leave it alone 'cuz I'll lose my shorts.*

    * I also think a V6/5sp is a great combo for a Silverado*

The f/s is too darned big.
I can fit it in the garage, but it's a 2-minute operation.
I'm not sure the missus could do it, plus it's not something you want to do every day.

We used to have a Nissan hardbody, which was a great little truck, at least pre-baby. But now we're post-baby, obviously, 7 years later...

The Nissan was $11 and we sold it for $6 five years later...that's what I consider a good deal. It also didn't cause any trouble during that time. I have little confidence that a Colorado would perform as well over the long haul, so I was interested in the short-term cost.

As far as the 5sp issue; I've never had a problem finding buyers for my stick shift cars. They still have their friends, and the cars are getting hard to find.

In December 2002 I bought a new '02 Avalanche for about $32,xxx on a $38,000 plus sticker with zero percent GMAC financing. Same thing then - they offered to finance $40,000 (and, no, I was NOT upside down on the trade). I was probably foolish not to have taken the money.

Hey Terry, here's another one. It's not black, but it's a nice one. Asking price is $12k, I offered $10k via email (I'd looked at it about a month ago), and they came down to $10,800.

    Location: Columbus, OH

    Color: Gold/Tan
    Major Options: Moonroof
    Condition:
    Looks clean in and out
    Tires - 60% remaining

    And this one....

Asking price is $11,500, haven't received a reply yet. Seems low.

I looked at a 2002 Black/Gray Accord EX v6 with 93k miles today. $12k asking price, but the exterior was pretty rough.

That brown Civic looks really good for it's age actually. How anemic were those 1.6 liter engines? I'm getting a bit tired of the 1.8 in my Sentra after driving the wife's 2.3 Mazda3s. I can only imagine how the smaller Civic engine performs. But having never owned a Honda product, maybe that smaller engine pulls pretty effectively...I just have my doubts.
And how do the Civics transmissions perform? Does one actually feel the shifts or are they a bit more seamless? I must say that for a 6 year old car, that Civic looks pretty flawless!

For $10, it better be flawless, and do your taxes, too!

The engine in the EX is better than the one in the LX and DX, but all could use more power...I think I'll be missing the V6 performance in my Legend, but not the poor gas mileage. You feel the shifts a bit more in Hondas than you do in say..Toyotas.
  • qwallsqwalls Member Posts: 406
LOL, I do kind of struggle with the concept of paying $10k for a 6 year old car that was only $17k new...but the miles are low, and it should last a long time. It's a bit easier when I take the viewpoint that it's less than 25% used up. :-) I know how you feel about used Hondas, Mathias. :-)

  • sandman46sandman46 Member Posts: 1,798
If I were in your situation, I'd buy it on the spot. Too bad it's not in South Florida, my 18 year old might need a car for the summer before he starts college in the fall and that would fit the bill nicely. We're tossing around letting him use my Sentra while I "Rent A Wreck" for the 8 or so weeks he's down here. Wonder how much a week they'd want for a small economy car anyways?
Will have to start looking around sometime near the end of May to get a feel.

    R-U-S-T

My buddy with the used-car lot has a 5sp '01 LX Coupe with <60k that he'd let go for $8 or so... or a 71k 01 Accord LX for ~ the same money.

In a Civic, I'll trade time for miles any day, so long as the car has been taken care of. Honda rustproofing isn't all that hot. Their engines hold up better than their bodies and chassis, IMO.

    -Mathias
  • qwallsqwalls Member Posts: 406
Good point on the rust, but I haven't had a problem on the ones I've owned since new or nearly new...6 years old could be a problem, but with the low miles, maybe it didn't see much salt. Haven't had any chasis problems with the exception of the Legend. Agree that the engines are better than the bodies.

Can't use a coupe...the Accord is a bit more interesting, closer to my original budget.

It's black and it's in Mary type land .......

The miles are waaay low and the color is good for the area ...... ~if~ the history is clean, the rubber is deep, the service is 100% and it hasn't been run thru every $2 car wash between Baltimore and Boynton Beach .... then the dealer probably dropped the super mid/tall $18's in it, maybe even the low low $19's in this bad boy if it's a winner ...

So ya figure a little service here and there - $250, maybe some skins - $250, and then put a little CPO action in this lovely driver - $1,200 .. and it's probably going to hit the table at in and around the $21ish figure ......... $22,500.? .. I doubt the dealer is getting golf lessons from the David Leadbetter Golf Academy for that kind of $$ ... if it's a nice one, he's only movin' a unit .....

City/State: Chandler, AZ or Phoenix metro area

    Yr/Make/Model: 2000 - Toyota Solara SE :)

    Body Style: Coupe

Engine: 3.0 liter, 6 cylinder, auto trans.

    Mileage: 88,000 miles

Color: Red Exterior and Ivory Interior

Major Options: Upgraded Alloy Wheels, Powered Moon Roof, Upgraded Premium JBL Auto System and Speakers w/CD Player & Cassette Player & AM-FM Radio w/6 or 8 Speakers, Powered Driver Seat w/lumbar controls, Powered Mirrors, Upgraded Engine w/OverDrive, Floor Mats & Trunk Mat, Powered Windows & Door Locks, Anti-Lock Brakes, Security, Side Air Bags also.

Condition: Interior is in Great Condition and the Exterior has a crease on the bottom front wheelwell fender on the passengers side. Paint is excellent (always garage parking at work & at home). Tires are less then one year old. The mileage is mainly Highway Milage - I do not fly so this car has been driven yearly to Minnesota along with trips to New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. So the majority of miles has been Highway, NOT this stop and go freeway milage like most cars get! This car has only had Mobile One Synthetic Oil used in it (Top of the Line Oil). Toyota Brand Brake Pads and Rotors were replaced less then a year ago. Battery is relitively new.

No prior damage, repaints or insurance claims have ever been done or applies to this car. I believe that if you take good care of your car it takes good care of you. This car has been an Excellent Car and I am getting a new one exactly like it - a Toyota Solara SE 2006 has been ordered for me so I need to sell or trade it. This is why I am asking for the values of this car. Thank you for your time and help. :)

    I may be crazy..

But, those are just nutso prices for cars of that age and mileage.. I've always said the only Honda purchase that makes sense... is a new Honda..

I'd look at Nissans, Mazdas, etc.. I love Honda/Acura.. I've had eight of them.. But, those prices are crazy..

    and... Mathias?

GM may go broke from pension payouts, but they will never run out of idiots with more money than sense... ;)

Oh. I know this is over your budget, but what about a new Toyota Taco, with a stick, & minimal options? You know it'd run forever, & have excellent resale, presumably? That's what I'd do, altho I know the vast options list would seduce me.

I like the concepts of "run forever", & "good/great resale" together in the same vehicle. Then again, you probably shouldn't do anything I would do..... :)

Had one of these as a rental last month and it drove pretty nicely and I'll bet it costs a $1500. - $2000. less than a Camcord. Not so sure of what the EPA figures are and the long term reliability, but it was a very comfortable daily driver for the 5 days I had it...nice power to. The engine and the tranny worked very well together.
One thing I don't understand. Some of the mid sized cars seem to get just as good or even better than alot of economy cars, my Sentra is a good example. The Accord & Camry both probaly do a bit better with a larger 4 banger and I'll wager that that Sebring with its 6 cylinder wasn't to far behind!

Looking to buy a new Acura TSX w/ nav. I can get great prices on the car, but no dealer seems to want to give me a fair trade on my 2001 Volvo S60 2.4T. With options added, here's some trade-in values:
    Edmunds: 12,950
    kbb: 11,715 (good condition)
    nada: 14,200

Volvo has 62K miles, dark blue exterior, beige interior, fairly new tires, 60K service recently done.
    All the standard equipment plus:
    headlight cleaners
    power moonroof
    power front seats
    heated seats
    wood trim
    leather
    leather steer wheel
    AM/FM/CASS/CD/CD changer
    stability control

Overall, clean condition. A couple of dings and stratches, but nothing out of the norm for this age car. It cleans up nice.

Dealers are only offering around 10K and don't seem to want to budge...am I being unreasonable for wanting at least 11K?

    Thanks!!!

I love my tC and can continue to enjoy it. But, I've realized that it stinks in the snow and my 3 little ones are not as comfy in the tC as I had hoped.

I drove a towncar a couple years ago and thought it drove smoothly. It was very comfortable. (I've owned a few big cars previously).

The deal may not be feasible. But, If I don't ask, I'll never know. ;)

Get some snow tires for the tC. The Potenza RE92 factory tires, in particular, are known to be awful in rain or snow.

My sixty-something year old uncle has owned Cadillacs (Eldos, Sevilles, and Devilles) and recently owned a Town Car. He traded it for an F-150 Supercrew because he found the Town Car was too boring, even though he has a motorcycle in the garage to have some fun with!
