If you bought it new, you're going to lose a lot because of depreciation. Especially if you still have payments to be made on it.
TIA - Damon
Just because I *really* like the TL-S, and living with the limited interior space of the Camaro has been more of a pain that I expected.
Re: depreciation hit -
I know I'll take big hit on it after 1 year, but I got an excellent price on it to begin with (low price + GM Card "free money" + low GMAC financing).
However, PeopleFirst.com is offering good rates right now too - like 6.65% for 60 mo.

Will be used as trade-in on new vehicle...
Titanium Silver Metallic over grey leather. Garaged since new. Extremely clean interior. Exterior has a couple of stone chips and one noticeable door ding, otherwise very good. Zymol wax applied every 6 months. 27,500 miles. Original MSRP of $42,345.
Auto Trans., Fold-down rear seats, Heated front seats, Xenon, In-dash CD, Harmon Kardon, Premium Package (moonroof, wood trim, lumbar, rain-sensing wipers), Sport Package (wheels, tires, seats, suspension, steering wheel).
What would be an acceptable trade-in offer? Or at least one that I shouldn't walk away from.
Thanks!!
The Vehicle sounds nice, it's for sure the right color and it's an auto ( it expands your market ) and the miles are ok.
With all the toy's this has, plus the Zenons .. this little puppy dog will do big $$ retail or on a trade. I'm sure any dealer will put a strong $26,000ish in it, or on a phone call ...
Terry.
You are in a good geographic area ( I guess ) to determine that.
Even though your vehicle is a great color ( my favorite ) and it's all loaded up and clean. This a last of a breed, and the dealers ..all over.. get a little weak kneed on appraisels.
I can't speak for the your particular area, but rear wheel drives as a whole, are weak. And in a couple of months, when the weather changes, that market does dwindle.
Right now, clean to the bone Camaro's Z's with low miles are doing in the $16's at all the big auctions. So, take advantage of the surrounding area's and throw in a 4/5 liner kinda like the BMW guy's post and see what you get..
Good luck ..
Terry.
Yours is low miles, and it's a 4X4 so that will save you in your area..the 6, doesn't help it though.
Clean to the bone 97's with all the stuff are doing in the low $10's ..maybe..
I hope this helps...
Terry.
If the vehicle has some minor dings or dents I would even bat an eyelid, if you can clean them up, and make them very presentable, the buyers know these little "King Kongs" will run for ever. Your mileage is right -- and based on what you are saying, it has no toy's , like windows or cruise --- But, they still sell like popcorn.
If it's nice, $5,500 ( real money )wouldn't scare me at all, and a $7,500 asking price is easy..on the retail side.
I hope this helps...
Terry.
Terry.
00 S-Type 3.0. Base car, roof, CD. No paintwork, 3 or 4 love bug marks on hood. Otherwise nice car. Topaz (gold) with Ivory leather. Nonsmoker, stamped service book. Fresh dunlops.
78,000 on the odometer.
I hit it at $19,500. Where would you hit it?
Curious....
Bill
Any thoughts???
They did come out in May of 99.. So I guess that could extrapolate to 32-33K a year...
Even so it is a LOT!
Bill
If so.. I'd hit the car at $15k. If its' a loaded up base car.. I'd be around $13,500-14K on it.
$17K is what an SE with well under 30K on it is going to do..in Silver or White (or Black in the Northeast) and in perfect shape on a good day.
Bill
Base S type 3 huh ..? Well it does have some miles that's for sure. A saving grace here, is that, it's got a slider l...o...l...-- but, no upgrade sound and no Nav.
Soooo, I'm thinkin' with the new tires and such ( where did this guy drive to ..? Costa Rica for job interviews ...? )
Unless this thing is like "perfect" I wouldn't be much of a player for much over $15 ..16/$17 on the push.
I'm paying high $29's for the sunday go to meetin' Jags 3's, with all the stuff, with 17/19/21K. So Kemo Sabi ... how about those Yankee's ...
Terry.
That topaz car was about perfect. Did have a few love bug marks but it was really nice. Sold it to an exporter I know quickly. Speaking of Costa Rica.. I think it may actually be going there!
This car happened to have a early build date... heck, RDR Date was like end of May back in 99.. so it was 27 months old.. 35K miles a year. A lot but not as scary as it sounds...
Still, unless I had a home for it Id'a passed...
Bill
Wearing my Yankees t-shirt
If you can retrieve $15/$16,000 ( real money ) on the vehicle you need to jump fast, if it's a SE.
The 40K doesn't help ... and if it's a perfect vehicle, without any parking lot kisses and the interior looks new, and needs -0- across the board, a real figure would in the $13's if it's the base.
Terry.
Is this minivan still bringing good money? It's white, ivory leather, 8k miles, perfect conditions (not one door ding), console, fancy rear view mirror, and one power door (I had to port-order the thing to get an XLE without every option in the book). How much on a trade? How much if I sell it?
So let's see, you want hang the ole' Toyota out to dry, .. huh ?
There is a still a group of "Cult's" ( l...o...l. )that want these types of vehicle's, and based on what you are saying -- it's super nice and clean, with Zip for miles..and .. it's an XLE. Most of what I have seen, are still drawing large figures, in and around the $25/$26,000ish range .. so you should be fine. As far as retail #'s .. ...I'm going to guess in the ultra high twenties, you know like $28/$29ish figure.
Terry.
It's just not for me, need a more car like ride,
confortable seat and also a better milage.
Major reason I bought this was for the 7 seat,
which turned out to be unreasonable for our family.
Anyway, here it goes,
-. Austin, TX
-. '01 Suzuki XL-7 Plus / Auto / 4x4
-. Rear air condition
-. Color Burgundy Pearl
-. 2000 miles
-. Dealer installed leather
-. Very clean in & out.
I believe I won't be able to get much, but what will
be the best price?
Thanks.
There is a 2000 Ody EX-NAV with low miles (seems like 11,000 miles)that had MSRP of $30,100. The owner was quoted $21,500 trade-in value by Honda dealerships (so read the posting here in the Town Hall).
Sienna have a high trade in value...but NOT nearly as good as does the Honda Odyssey even though Sienna does much better than Grand Caravan, Town & Country, Venture, Quest, Villager, MPV, Eurovan and Windstall.
I had considered getting a 2002 Odyssey, Sienna, Grand Caravan, or Town & Country. I was quoted a trade-in $1,500 to $2,500 LESS than the honest Bill told me to expect. Bill's number was $601 less than the average of Edmunds and 2 other internet sources.
I feel dealerships MUST make a profit to stay in business. However, a difference of $6000 to $7000 between what they will pay me for my trade-in and what they will receive when it is resold is exorbitant and completely unacceptable. Sure wish Bill and Terry were in my area.
When I sold my '98 Prizm recently, I described the car and Terry told me "a strong $6000+" at the auction. I then shopped it at used-car dealerships -- no bites because of 5spd -- and finally went to the biggest and sleaziest dealer in the area. They were professional and courteous and within 40 minutes sent me on my way with a written offer of $6k to buy it, not as a trade-in.
I put the car in the paper and in two weeks sold it for $7300, which turned out to be the Edmund's "private-party" figure. And I was lucky to sell it, because my next-lowest offer came from an individual offering $6k even, and I had no other interested parties.
So don't be too hard on the dealerships; if it's a lousy $1500 difference, just make them a counter offer. And remember that there are regional differences, too.
I think Bill and Terry and others are providing a fantastic service, and I love reading their msgs, but I don't think you can take their figures as the absolute truth unless you're in the same area.
That said, the $21k on an Odyssey is way too low, agreed.
Peace.

East Lansing, MI
I just wanted to thank you for your help. If I had listened to my "friends" in the business. I would have been paying $30,000 plus the Catera. The Audi is in the garage, and the Catera can stay outside til tommorow (of course my wifes car must have a place to park)
Many thanks!
J.Simone
Again thanks Terry,
I dunno how this relates to what ya paid for it..
But looks like its' worth about $16,500-17,000 from where I am sitting...
Terry?
Bill
Like the guy who posted a couple weeks ago about an Acura TL-S.
Apparently he failed to mention that the car had been damaged.. Ladies and Gentlemen.. ya gotta be honest with us! Trust me, anyone who knows what they are doing CAN spot paintwork!
As far as that Odyssey goes.. I think its' worth $23-24K. IMHO, Navi adds little to a cars' resale value.
That beng said, I remember going to a Jaguar class for Select Edition managers or some such garbage back in 99 I think. It was actually held on the property of Manheim Auto Auction.
They asked all 30 of us in the room to appraise a 1997 XJ6 with like 25K miles.
The numbers varied as much as $3,500 from low to high. So while I think that we're doing well here, bear in mind that sight unseen appraisals are tough to do. You should use mine and Terry's info as a guide. If I say your car is worth $14,500, Terry says $14,250 and you're quoted around $14K.. OK, you're within reason. If you're quoted $12K... you might be at the wrong store.
Like anything else, it does pay to shop around.
Bill
Close as I expected.
Yeah....it will also be hard to find a person who
would even take it.
I should have done more test driving before getting it.
I find it extremely offensive when someone posts a nastygram about the car buying process. It always turns out that the crybaby either wasn't prepared or expected the whole process to be like shopping at Nordstrom or someplace like that.
Then they demand that everyone should be given the same deal regardless of the amount of time and effort spent to obtain it. That's what really ticks me off - - I bust my butt to get the best all-around deal for myself just to find some other joker expecting exactly the same deal but putting on no effort.
I like the business the way it is - - Rewarding the smartest and shrewdest shoppers and laying waste to the slackers and the dummies.
Survival of the fittest, indeed.
Thanks for your help in advance. I
Well, I think your friend will have alot of fun in it --
A "Very Xtra " clean one, that does *not* have the original tires, and the roof is *not* in need of any top work -- and has been serviced, will do in the high $9's on the wholesale side, and on the Retail side I'm thinkin' in the $12's ...
I saw a few run in April/May/June, and they did over $10,000+ at the auctions ( but, they were *Perfect* ) ... now with summer just about over, the buyers are less and less, and most people now, are getting the urge to move on to something else, Suv's ..4X4's, etc -- So this is a great time for your friend to make an offer .... So alot of what this vehicle is worth, will depend on what part of the country you are in ...
Good luck ..
Terry.
Terry.
If you have a 16yr old...
Go find an inexpensive Volvo 240 for them to learn to drive on and keep the Pathfinder instead of letting them learn to drive on a $25K SUV!
Seriously..
That being said I think that the Pathfinder is worth about $20,500.
Hope this helps!
Bill
Just be glad she hates driving in an expensive SUV. It'll save you $$ in the long run!
Hey, wrecking a $5K car beats wrecking a $20K SUV!
Just the THOUGHT of it makes me almost want to pass out!!
No offense cris...8D
Hatchback LX
107K (!)
5-speed
Alloys, spoiler, upgraded (but broken) stereo, AC, Rear Defrost
No Cruise or power anything
Looks sharp, runs great
Also, wondering if this is an example of a car MUCH better off sold privately than traded.
Thank you so very, very much!!
-Scott
Thanks for the advice. Ended up getting between $5500-$6000 on the purple Legend, just as you predicted. Traded it in for a Mystic Sea LS430. Both are fantastic cars. Thank you for all your professional help. You're an asset to Edmunds.
Jeff
Well for starters, it's a handshaker ..no help there. It's doing the 100,000K run, no help there. No tunes, no help there .... and it's "no sale green" no help there ...aaaah, lets see --- let's hope it has cold breeze, knee deep in rubber - runs like a rabbit, and it needs -0- across the board ( spend $50 bucks at w/mart and get a radio ).
I don't feel you should trade it ... go retail, on a trade you are looking at less than than a "Gee Whiz" ... Clean it up, drop it in the paper, and ask $2,499 for it and take what you can get, probably "around" $1,500/$1,800 I'm thinkin' --- don't forget the trip to Wal-mart.
Escorts are just like rabbits --- They are all over the place.
Have fun ....
Terry.
Is it "mystic green" per chance ..l...o...l..
Great vehicle, no klicks .. if it's an auto, right now they are doing in and around the $15's ...
Depending on the type of dealer -- they will have no problem trading with you, this type of trade is done everyday ..
Terry.
It has 145000 miles. Car looks great except a bit of rust on the rear (most 90/91 Accords have it)
The dealer is asking 2800 & would not go down a bit! (It has good rubber on it, worth atleast 20-25k miles more)
It was sold at 25,000 miles to second owner & he traded it in after driving for more than 120,000 miles! Does that mean it ws maintained properly ??
If it checks out, buy it ..
Good Luck..
Terry.
Ps -- Where can you buy a nice car today, for less than $3,000 -- it's tuff for me, and I do this 365 24/7 ..
Regards,
Scott
Is it certified? That pushes the warranty out to six years and 100,000 miles from the original in-service date. Figure that adds $1500 to the value of the car right away.
Other than that, the price would be too high. You can buy a new one for $2000 off MSRP in some areas right now. I think the car's worth invoice or a bit less, even certified, but it's just my opinion.
